Happy New Year to you as well, Dr. Ledeen, and to all of your readers.

Dec 31, 2007 - 6:37 pm Dominique R. Poirier:

Happy New Year to you too; and, yes, 2008 seems to be a promising vintage, already, as seen from France where I am at this time. For there is something of an improvement as the newscaster of France 3, the second largest French public television network, enthusiastically announced today 12 a.m. that only 372 cars have been burned down during the midnight party; or 6 percent less than last year same night!

Yippee.

Also, as a matter for the next 2008 Darwin awards, which seem to be promising too.

LYON, FRANCE – As a man was attempting to dip a piece of cake in a glass of burning whisky, during midnight party, he accidentally tipped the glass over himself.
This culinary experiment was followed by the death of the man whose body burned entirely, and by the evacuation of the 17 persons living in the building. 53 firemen are still attempting to extinguish the fire as this news is written.

Tocqueville on American Character: Why Tocqueville’s Brilliant Exploraton of the American Spirit is as Vital and Important Today as it was Nearly Two Hundred Years Ago

Machiavelli on Modern Leadership: Why Machiavelli’s Iron Rules are as Timely and Important Today as Five Centuries Ago

by Michael Ledeen

American Enterprise Institute resident scholar Ledeen offers an updated version of the rules for leadership laid down by Machiavelli. Its the nature of humans to do evil, and war is our natural state. Anyone who would wield power in such a setting, writes Ledeen, echoing Machiavelli, “must be prepared to fight at all times.” This is as true in business, sports, and politics as it is on the battlefield.
