Read this letter from a woman in Zimbabwe, and weep.  Weep for the dying and the starving and the penniless in Africa, and weep for the bureaucrats in the “centers of power” who just cannot find a way to bring an end to the terrible evil that is Robert Mugabe’s tyranny.

Years ago I wrote a little book called “Freedom Betrayed” in which I decried the fecklessness of the West–above all, the Clinton Administration of the time–in combating tyranny, after we had led a global democratic revolution that had transformed much of the world.  On this anniversary of the great democratic revolution that created America, it is clear that the West remains feckless.  If anything, it is worse today than it was then, because back then the threats to freedom seemed remote, whereas today they are manifest and imminent.

If we cannot support a fine nation that clearly expressed its wishes in a difficult election, it is unlikely we will find the will to fight the vicious tyrants in the Middle East, even though they daily promise to destroy us.  And what will they be thinking in Beijing and Moscow and Pyongyang?

winston:

How very freaking sad. It is the same state of affairs in Iran, Cuba, Belarus and Venezuela.

So long as we are too dainty, and delude ourselves that we’re being “moral” by not wasting such dirtballs as Mugabe, ——————- then the murders, the mayhem, the evil, ——- it will all continue.

And Mugabe isn’t the only one.

They’re back to eating people in West Africa. The UN even wrote a report on the incidence thereof.

But nobody is going to do spit about it.

And look at Chavez.

Why is he still on this side of the river of death. He should have been sent across the river Styx sometime ago.

And as for the world of mohammedanism, ————————– well that’s a target rich environment.

We have trained men, who know what to do. And so do our allies, men such as those found in the Recces, the SAS, the SBS, ————– but they won’t be turned loose to put an end to such evildoers.

We need to cut Rambo loose!

The West needs to speak the language of the enemy. In radical Islam that language is the sword. Sadly, our Secretary of State has wasted the last year w/ 18 trips to Israel to bully our ally,& not our enemies, into concessions to terrorists & spending our tax $ on the Palestinian Arabs who cheer 9/11. McCain hopefully will re-focus our foreign policy on pressuring the enemy & not on legitimizing the tyrants in North Korea or Africa w/ mere platitudes or outright appeasm’t.

Zimbabwe is a tragedy………but so are most African countries. We either go in with tough love or just leave them alone. I think that we should open our markets to Africa, give them prferable treatment in our markets. As long as they comply with our quality specs.

The situation in Zim today is arguably far worse than in the days of pre-colonial tribalism. So much for marxist “Progress”.

Lest one thinks Zim is “Over There”, review Rhodesia’s rich agriculture, mining and export. “Progress” has freed whom, exactly? What has It done for food production? Has anything improved? Hell, stayed at par? Now… Can one name a Party and a Candidate in the US with policies bearing striking similarity to those of impisi Mugabe’s? “Over There” may be a lot closer to hand than one might like.

Michael, ‘Freedom Betrayed’ was enjoyable and informative. I recommend it [though I’m rather stingy about lending my copy.] Cheers.

Tocqueville on American Character: Why Tocqueville’s Brilliant Exploraton of the American Spirit is as Vital and Important Today as it was Nearly Two Hundred Years Ago

Machiavelli on Modern Leadership: Why Machiavelli’s Iron Rules are as Timely and Important Today as Five Centuries Ago

by Michael Ledeen

American Enterprise Institute resident scholar Ledeen offers an updated version of the rules for leadership laid down by Machiavelli. Its the nature of humans to do evil, and war is our natural state. Anyone who would wield power in such a setting, writes Ledeen, echoing Machiavelli, “must be prepared to fight at all times.” This is as true in business, sports, and politics as it is on the battlefield.
