He also subconsciously, if not even consciously, believes the allegedly racist and imperialistic United States has victimized the dark skin peoples of the world. Our victims are only dishing out some well deserved “blow back.” Hard power policies therefore of little value. We must emphasize a softer approach.

Sad to admit, I found myself watching parts of Oliver Stone’s “W.” the other day for about 20 minutes. And it dawned on me how much sense Stone’s version of Cheney made, even the ultra-caricatured Cheney played by Richard Dreyfuss. Just because it’s been eight years since 9/11, does not lessen the likelihood of a catastrophic attack.

Every president is tested. If history is any indignation, we can be certain of two things: 1) when the United States is economically weak, our enemies exploit that weakness; 2) when we elect new presidents, our enemies challenge their resolve.

It happened to Truman, who lost China to the communists, allowed Stalin to get the bomb, and settled with an ugly draw on the Korean peninsula.

It happened to Eisenhower, who lost the space race to Moscow, and Cuba to Castro.

It happened to Kennedy, whose naivete in meetings with Khrushchev convinced the Politburo he could be had, starting a missile crisis that nearly destroyed the world.

It happened to Carter, who once mocked his fellow Americans for having an “inordinate fear” of communism, only to see the Russians gobble up Afghanistan and violate his precious arms control agreements he was sure they would honor. His “holy man” Khomeini overtook our embassy.

It happened to Reagan with the Marine barracks in Beirut, George H.W. Bush with Noriega and Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, Clinton with Milosevic, Saddam’s inspection violations, and al Qaida’s attacks on our embassies, and of course Bush II with Sept. 11.

President Obama cannot escape this reality. This is the first time that these two geopolitical phenomena — economic problem of this scale, and new president this weak — are happening at the same time.

So far, with the exception of admitting Gitmo concurred with Geneva Conventions and enemy combatants in Afghanistan don’t require habeas corpus rights, Obama’s actions have not exactly been reassuring.

And when THAT occurs, we can all kiss ‘regime change’ a long and real good-bye in Iran…or in Washingon, DC!

Where are covert action coups & assassinations when we need them? Where are Israeli jets carrying bunker-busting tactical nuclear weapons?

Certainly someone in the Taliban knows that the war in Afghanistan became imminently winnable for them on January 20th. I don’t think Obama will commit more resources to the war their, given his burgeoning domestic commitments, or stay their if lots of flag draped coffins start ending up on the front page of the NYT. We know he’s thinned-skinned, so if he begins to receive broad based criticism for his strategy in Afghanistan, he’ll move quickly to put it behind him, and he’ll seek the exit. Likewise, if anyone in al Qaeda has half a brain, they’ll simply leave Afghanistan alone and rebuild in Pakistan, Somalia, or Sudan. Surely they understand that this President has no desire–or resources–to get entangled in another foreign adventure.

Even worse, al Qaeda must surely recognize that we’re in far worse shape as a nation than we were in 2001. Our debt is running out of control, our population is growing vastly more dependant on the government, and the economy is extremely weak. A massive attack now would be truly catastrophic, and we have the absolute worst possible person in the White House to deal with it. Far from being tempted to an overwhelming foreign response, what we’ve seen from Obama so far makes me think we’re more likely to see an overwhelming domestic response to an attack, something that would make the Patriot Act seem academic.

Just a bit of news from up here in Canada. This was in this morning’s paper:

“OTTAWA – Canadian fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a snooping Russian bomber over the High Arctic on the eve of U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to Ottawa last week.

“At no time did Russian planes enter Canadian airspace,” Defence Minister Peter MacKay told a news conference Friday. “But within 24 hours of the president’s visit to Canada last week we did scramble two F-18 fighter planes.

“They met. The Russian aircraft was approaching Canadian airspace and, as they have done on previous occasions, (the Canadians) sent very clear signals that were understood: that aircraft was to turn tail and head back to its own airspace. Which it did.”

I suspect that the Russians are simply showing their friends, such as Iran, that they still have the wherewithal to back them up, if need be. So if Iran produces nuclear weapons and the U.S. decides to do something about them, the Russians will simply remind the U.S. that they will back Iran. How will Obama respond? Dr. Ledeen has given us a hint.

I love the Neville Chamberlain analogy, it seems that any time someone tries some diplomacy instead of threats and insults, it’s 1938 redux. Since there have been no real concessions, no letting Germany occupy the Sudetenland, I fail to see it analogy. Maybe we should just do away with the State Department and replace it with right wing talk show hosts to threaten and insult the rest of the world into submission by reminding them how strong and virtuous we are but they aren’t. But given the (lack of) education of most of the unwashed here, that is all they need to hear, “Munich, Chamberlain, Hitler”, and they start barking and frothing like Pavlov’s dogs, without their intellect. Funny, but I remember in 1940 that it was one of Churchill’s many military fiascos, the failure of the Norway campaign, that caused Parliment to vote Chamberlin out and let the man responsible for the fiasco take over.

Rachel, I think I’m falling in love! I have “several” M1 Garands I got through the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) and you might want to take a look there for good prices on the carbines and ammunition. The battle rifles they sell are real — not the knock-offs sold now by the Springfield Armory — and the prices for a service or rack grade M1 are around $500. Although they are registered to you by the Feds, they are sent to your door directly. You do NOT need to pick them up from a FFL dealer. Ammunition is inexpensive as well.

Obama may come after your guns, but he has to take them from you and, given the readiness of your neighbors, his folks might hesitate.
