They are carried out simply for the sake of going to heaven. We don't know how to deal with an enemy that doesn't function in this world but simply looks forward to the next world. Mutually assured destruction (MAD) kept the US and the USSR from destroying each other, but Islamists are looking forward to their destruction—and ours.
