Sometimes, a small detail, like using lower-case jews instead of Jews, tells more about the person’s true feeling than the the rest of their post.

Although it may surprise some people, but the Jews tend to have their share of scoundrels, just like everybody else, and the wierd insistence that Jews be “holier than thou” seems to be the trademark of the Western Antisemite; the Muslim one, OTOH, has his/her own issues, but both tend to unite when it comes to the Jews.

I, of course, don’t know who Tante Weilika actually is, but the writer of her email, has simply displayed the low level of thought and knowledge of many like her. Why would any Jew want her as a godmother, whatever her definition of godmother is. Who cares whether or not she likes “Jewish food,” which could be Polish food minus the pig and its by products, or Middle Eastern food, or North African food, or Hungarian food, or Indian food. She is another ignorant person, who obviously doesn’t know anything about Jews. Furthermore, Jews joined Christians long ago, when even Christians were not particularly aware of the treatment of Christians in countries such as Egypt,Iraq,Sudan,and Indonesia. Christians aren’t the only religious minorities in Muslim countries who are mistreated and suffer lower status. Get an education, alte Tante before you write nonsense. .

Jews are more likely than any other group to protest the genocide that is taking place in Darfur. Jews were overrepresented among the whites who went to Mississippi and elsewhere to work for voting rights and civil rights in general. Jews worked with Gandhi and others to fight for minority rights in South Africa early in the 20th century. More recently, Jews were the members of the South Arican parliament who spoke and voted against apartheid.

Israel’s Golda Meir was the first woman head of government in history who was neither the wife (like Sirimavo Bandaranaike) nor the daughter (like Indira Gandhi) of a previous head of government. Firthermore, the government of Israel has drafted openly gay men and women into its very effective army since Day One of its existence.

Tante Waileka: that is so unfair. Jewish Americans have been at the forefront of working for human and civil rights for the entire 20th century.

I think you do not want to learn about the Jewish contributions to our civilization, and I’m not going to bother going on because it would be a waste of my time.

If jews are such ‘good people’ ‘beloved’ of god, then why do they call everyone who dislikes their culture (and of course their awful food) ‘anti-semitic’? I don’t like kimchee either but I don’t ‘paintbrush’ all koreans or all jews because of food or ancient history. If I did that I wouldn’t be godmother to four jewish kids and mother to two korean kids. But do you ever hear a jew speak out against CHRISTIAN holocausts/genocides? Nope. NEVER. If you won’t stand up for other persecuted people, you can forget about ME standing up for YOU.
Hypocrisy stinks like a long dead fish in the hot sand.

There is a video clip at Weekly Standard of Bill Kristol’s speech at Oberlin College. The disruptive ignorance of many of the audience was jaw-dropping. I mean, “9/11 was a plot by the neo cons!” And the college was represented by an ineffective woosy of a professor, flapping his way around the podium trying to make these slobs ‘behave.’

There is a 1981 novel, by Diana Norman, called “Fitzempress’ Law”, which is about (my hero) Henry II of England. At one point, the very sad point is made that Henry, who was such a very great king who brought common law to England, would be remembered ONLY for Thomas a Becket’s murder. The issue was the classic one (in the West) over the power of the State versus that of the Church, and in this case, the Church won, hands down. It had its very own martyr. I guess in these cases, you need martyrs. Lo the oppressed Palestinian masses! Oh well.

There are books, there is information, and … there is ignorance. The Middle East today, like post WWI Germany, is incapable of looking at itself in the mirror. Thus evil persists. St. Augustine was right.
