I guess some form of emotional rehabilitation could be a starting point especially if the perpetrators are themselves children. Imprisonment in the USA for adults who commit such crimes and likewise rehabilitation. Sending them back to Liberia only means more children will be subjected to this barbaric behaviour. If they don’t reform, then very long hard prison sentences.

Regardless of the sensitivity or intelligence of the questioner, the fact is that what is to be done is answered by, not words, but deeds, by action. Perhaps history would be easier to read had both shuffled off to the library and stayed there. Many do; but Nature is no so generous to humanity as to keep actors off the world stage. What is to be done, if anything at all?

I can’t find much good reason in bringing the world to live in America when the simpler solution is to bring America to the world. Call it imperialism, if you must, I call it colonialism. It means that women must encourage their sons to venture into the world and settle in far-away lands for life, raising children among natives of other lands till the enemy peoples are our own by birth and nature.

It was a mistake, in hindsight, to found Monrovia by sending American Blacks there: we should have, had there been a crystal ball to gaze into, sent Europeans to make Liberia truly free rather than a terrible parody of the ante-bellum American South. Too late to change history then but just right to make history today by encouraging independent men and women to spread across the globe like military medics armed to protect their charges, humanitarian intervenors, school teachers with guns, people who will bring forth universal Modernity through filibustering.

I’m called all sorts of names, as one might imagine, but seldom a Leninist. What is to be done? march into lands destroyed by primitivism, and destroy them, saving the survivors from “culture” and spoiled Modernist Death Hippies who indulge in sentimental play-acting for the sake of their own emotional self-indulgence.

Mothers, send your sons to war for Modernity. Say good-bye to them forever. Be ruthless, and someday “America” will be universal, all of the world free as we are here today.

The only thing I can suggest is for individual Christians and churches to support the work of reputable Catholic and Protestant Christian churches *within Liberia* (as also in other, similar places as Christians have done for centuries) – and in particular, the work of the Bible Society in translating Scripture (which includes the TaNaKh as well as the Christian scriptures) into the indigenous languages, and disseminating them, in audio form or even by radio. Another body worth supporting, in Africa, is an Anglican womens’ association, “The Mothers’ Union” – they are campaigning against FGM, for example. Or Catherine Hamlin’s hospital in Addis Ababa, ‘The Hospital by the River’ (google it – they do not merely repair childbirth injury, they are working hard on training indigenous medical workers and midwives, and educating against the practices that damage the health of women and girls).

Donate books for school libraries, for children who are learning English – remember the impact upon Ayaan Hirsi Ali of the books she read in her school library in Kenya …the Enid Blyton, the Nancy Drew, the Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm. Remember the New Testament parable of the sower…or the words of YHWH in Isaiah, when he says that he sends out his Word, and it will not return to him empty. From a secular rational POV, all of this is perfectly futile; but I am not a secular rationalist and I remember what happened to my own wild, barbaric, slave-taking, headhunting, human sacrificing Irish ancestors when Patrick came to their island with an entirely new story about humanity and god and the world.

Whether atheists like it or not, the Bible teaches people that individuals are responsible for what they do; it has over time produced a ‘truth and falsehood’ culture rather than an ‘honour and shame’ culture; it teaches introspection, acknowledgement of wrongdoing, repentance, and (this must *not* be misunderstood or taken for granted) forgiveness and restitution. It teaches this not by philosophical arguments but by telling powerful stories. And so, let us give those stories (and others that we know have had good effect on at least some people) by whatever means we can, to the people of Liberia and of other terrible places. I am not being Pollyanna, either; I do not expect magical transformations, only slow, painful changes, taking generations to bear fruit.

If we have charity, humility and individual responsibility (not to mention an awareness of innocent and undeserved suffering) in the West, it is owed first and only to ‘Jerusalem’; see Cahill ‘The Gifts of the Jews’ and a book that could most profitably be read as its companion or sequel, D B Hart’s “Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and Its Fashionable Enemies’- the chapter ‘the face of the faceless’ is particularly apposite. Hart speaks of the ‘Christian invention of the human’ – but perhaps it would be more correct to speak of the Jewish invention of the human, on which the Christian vision is based and without which, indeed, the Christian vision (which our western worldview takes entirely for granted) would not exist.

Barbarism is a perpetual temptation; the story of the House of Israel (surrounded and constantly seduced by the devotees of Moloch and other dark and violent gods) and the parallel story, from AD 30, of the Christian church and the society it has inhabited, is one of persons and whole communities falling flat on their faces in mud and blood…but, miraculously, rising again, and going on.

Surely officials who allowed these foreigners to enter this country would be educated in their customs and beliefs. As far as I am concerned they are endangering our citizens, exposing them to dangerous foreigners. Don’t they have to take an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect our citizens from enemies both foreign and domestic? Shouldn’t they be held accountable for the people they let in to live here with us?

It seems to me they are adding poison the the melting pot, hoping that we will get only a little sick rather than killed by the ingredients they so casually throw in. I am sick to death of our government officials allowing criminals and uncivilized beings into our mist without them being made to adhere to OUR customs and belief system.

Perhaps President Obama who wants to close down Gitmo should instead consider using it as a intermediate facility to house foreign immigrants until they learn to adapt to our civilization instead of endangering those of us who walk around unaware of the barbarians among us.

Adapt or leave would be my suggestion and we should stop overly apologizing for our western customs and beliefs and overly kowtowing to foreign customs and beliefs.

Our melting pot will become a poisoned stew if we do not do something about it sooner rather than later.

He in MN..it seems like the influx of thousands of refugees from Somalia have seriously increased the crime rate. There is also a problem here the increase in non-treatable TB. According to the customs of some of those from Somalia, young girls are returned to Somalia, for the surgery which is actual genital mutilation. Except for a few, most here in the medical and police communities look the other way.

Just yesterday I told you about increased numbers of cases of drug resistant TB in states with high immigrant populations, now here is news specific to Minnesota. On World TB Day (today) we are learning that Minnesota’s cases of TB are rising due to refugee resettlement.

The deadly disease has declined overall in the US since 1953.

“Many people might think that TB is a disease of the past because of its marked decline in the U.S., but it continues to be a problem today,” said Deborah Sodt, manager of the TB unit for the Minnesota Department of Health. Nationwide, the rate of TB disease has decreased more than tenfold since national reporting began in 1953. However, TB continues to be one of the deadliest diseases in the world, killing approximately 2 million people every year.

Who decides who receives an opportunity to make a new life in the land of opportunity and on what basis? Very few American taxpayers know.

Inevitably some prejudice enters into such a critical accounting of human flesh. During the last century when Jews were being slaughtered by the millions, American immigration was firmly closed to Jews condemning large numbers fleeing Europe to certain death.

Current immigration policy favors Africans over Chinese. Would most Americans prefer African immigrants to Chinese immigrants? I don’t know the answer but American taxpayers among whom these people will end up living peaceful and productive or not so peaceful and productive lives ought to have a great deal more say in the matter.

Healthy American sunshine on immigration policy and those making it is urgent. Decisions regarding who we welcome to our shores should not be left entirely to white-shoe elites in the State Department .

Your discussion certainly highlights more of the unintended consequences of mindless multi-culturalism.

Unfortunately, what is done in this kind of situation will illustrate for all to see whether or not America thinks its own survival actually has any value. I say “unfortunately” because I’m afraid we’re going to learn that our national instinct for self-preservation is badly compromised.

Will the social do-gooders ever have the moral courage to acknowledge what they are aiding and abetting if they continue applying their great, superior virtues to all policies and procedures?

In terms of immediate solutions, we may see a revival of old-fashioned orphanages. It seems problematic to expect that foster homes could handle such deeply damaged children safely. Of course, such a short-term solution would be painted by the statists as a repeat of the old “Indian schools” that tried to turn all the children of the Indian tribes into Irish Catholics.

Can we “absorb” such situations successfully? A few–yes. A sprinkling, because of our mindless immigrant-welcoming (all culture problems included), maybe. An avalanche, because of how useful the resulting crises would be to Rahm Emanuel?–no.

I finally took the time yesterday to check in to the Cloward Piven strategies for destabilization at a national level. Frightening. Whether deliberately constructed or not, those dynamics certainly come into play in an area like this where the demands on public resources are quickly escalated.

The “elites” of these Third World societies study in the West—at the feet of radical leftists. They then return home and advocate socialist economic policies and the political domination of the so-called benevolent and well educated classes. Barack Obama’s father is one such individual. I think you’re on to something. I think the whole slave state-free state controversies in the 1800s made the US hesitant to take on new territories for fear of what to designate them; it also made for half-ass military expeditions (e.g. disastrous incursions into Canada at the start of the War of 1812). Otherwise, we’d have at least has a US that mirrored in size the dreaded North American union.

Imperialism is the right word (and really, so what! ), colonialism was an arrangement more governed by trade.

It is easier to move ideas and capital than people. The best thing America could do for the workd is to curtail immigration so that the inventive and talented tend their own gardens. I live in Phoenix and of most interest to me is that the rape of this child was never called that by the media in reports. Instead they called it a physical assualt. Why? Because they needed to whitewash it? This child was RAPED, not just physically assualted. Admittedly by young men who weren’t much older than her but she was raped. If people are going to move to this country they need to understand that we have laws that they are subject to and what was perhaps acceptable in their home county isn’t acceptable here. Even if they sought political assylum in this county, if they break the laws here they should be sent back!

Our “complicated” laws with juvenile and adult (which concept they don’t really ascribe to either) laws are alien and incomprehensible. Sadly this will happen again until we cut this cancer from our society via harsh penalties or deportation and blocking further immigration.

I agree that the girl’s father (and any brothers over 6 years old she may have) should be deported, but they have broken no law, so I doubt it will happen.

The horrid little rapists should be deported along with their families. They are not men, they are vicious, primitive children who are too old to change, even the 9 year old.

Our prison system is based on the notion of rehabilitation, impossible in this case because of deeply ingrained cultural paradigms.

It could be argued the victim’s mother, sisters and any toddler brother should be deported too — I’m neutral on that due to the same cultural issues.

Deportation is worse than going to a US prison and might serve as a better deterrent for other African immigrants.

Dr. McCosker has the most constructive ideas for future policy.

You should really read more of Ms. Chesler’s articles. She sites a strange custom of immigrants when finding out honor killing is a crime, encourage you people to kill themselves so their family member won’t be charged. Some are even encouraged to commit suicide while blowing themselves and others up to make amends for their terrible crime of being raped.

Exactly. America is doing a good job of fighting crime. Even Americans with funny sounding names who cook strange-smelling food are willing to to work with the police to catch criminals. As a child growing up in New York forty-five years ago, I would listen (actually try not to listen) to my father’s stories of Jews, basically refugees from Russia-Poland, who exploited other Jews coming to America, “greenhorns”. Problem is, Ruvy, these people aren’t being assimilated, remolded, etc., etc., etc. And, if anyone tried, I suspect they’d be immediately labeled “racist!”, and told that it’s bigoted to try and change their culture. After all, who are Americans to say what’s right, and what’s wrong—blah, blah, blah.

Furthermore, it’s not a job that any one person, daughter or son of immigrants, can do all by themselves. There has to be a very all encompassing program of education, assimilation and the expectation that immigrants will become American. I don’t see that happening. What I see happening is that we’re being told we must love, and embrace, all immigrants, no matter how bloody, misogynistic or downright backwards their culture is, or what crimes they commit, and that if dare criticize them at all, we’re 1. As for the Jews, and Italians, and others, these were immigrants from European countries, who shared, at least to some extent, our values. And, despite your depiction of the Jewish culture in America as being Hell (huh?), and needing to be “Christianized” (again, huh?) the Jews had high standards of education, hard work, family, and did manage to assimilate themselves (though the “Christian” culture of the time often wanted to keep them out.) Again, with the Italians, the Irish and others, no matter how brutal some individuals could be, there was alwasy a core of decent, hard-working individuals, who accepted our laws, and wanted to join our society.

Given that too many Americans have been saps, and we’ve let ourselves go along with the “It’s bigoted to ever criticize immigrants” memo from progressives, we already have our hands full with criminals from other countries, along with the native-born ones: The Hispanic gangs of L.A., including M-13, Vietnamese gangs, Haitian drug dealers, the Russian mafia, etc. And now, we’ve got violent Somalians. I don’t think putting on PC blinders is going to help things.
