These photos show what happens to real women who wear the Islamic Veil. The photos depict horrifying hate and the unbearable suffering it inflicts upon female innocents. The photos were taken by Emilio Morenatti of the Associated Press. The text is based on work done by Nicholas Kristof—one of the few people at the New York Times whose work I am proud to quote. You may find them HERE. (Thanks to Yehuda for calling this to my attention).
What are we seeing?
The Arabization or the Saudi-ization of Muslims in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan is the hidden hand behind these acid attacks upon women. These poor girls and women have had their lives ruined; some have been forced to undergo surgery 20-30 times in order that they may see a little, or breathe a bit, hear something, perhaps in order to eat or make themselves understood. They look like…monsters. That was what their attackers wanted to accomplish. To render their faces into self-portraits of their attackers.
Why was acid thrown into their faces? The main reasons are because they dared to reject someone in marriage or because they wanted a divorce. The “jilted” suitors (or husbands) took their revenge in this fashion. If he can’t have her, no man will; I will make sure that no man will ever want her.” One young girl was gang-raped aftger which her rapists threw acid on her face. Another committed the “crime” of disappointing her father by being born female, not male. Many were disfigured as a result of a “family dispute.”
Thus, the punishment for being born female, for exercising any will of one’s own is, Saudi-style, the most horrible punishment. The men tried to make the women loathsome to humanity, to sentence them to painful surgeries, self-hatred, perhaps to lives lived in isolation.
Make no mistake. This tendency to disfigure women–even those who wear the Islamic Veil–is real. And, it might be coming our way if we do not stop the Wahhabi and Salafi influence which is funding our universities in North America as well as the Islamic religious schools.
For once, I will leave aside the question of what must be done and allow the photos to speak to you.
Irum Saeed, 30, poses for a photograph at her office at the Urdu University of Islamabad, Pakistan, Thursday, July 24, 2008. Irum was burned on her face, back and shoulders twelve years ago when a boy whom she rejected for marriage threw acid on her in the middle of the street. She has undergone plastic surgery 25 times to try to recover from her scars.
Shameem Akhter, 18, poses for a photograph at her home in Jhang, Pakistan, Wednesday, July 10, 2008. Shameem was raped by three boys who then threw acid on her three years ago. Shameem has undergone plastic surgery 10 times to try to recover from her scars.
Najaf Sultana, 16, poses for a photograph at her home in Lahore, Pakistan on Wednesday, July 9, 2008. At the age of five Najaf was burned by her father while she was sleeping, apparently because he didn't want to have another girl in the family. As a result of the burning Najaf became blind and after being abandoned by both her parents she now lives with relatives. She has undergone plastic surgery around 15 times to try to recover from her scars.
Shehnaz Usman, 36, poses for a photograph in Lahore, Pakistan, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008. Shehnaz was burned with acid by a relative due to a familial dispute five years ago. Shehnaz has undergone plastic surgery 10 times to try to recover from her scars.

Our allies in the media must be educated and encouraged to bring their story to life for hundreds of millions of people.
Pehaps a “Stealth Campaign” would be effective: start an organization dedicated to “help women suffering religious persecution” and ask feminist organizations for donations and assistance.
Let them see what their silence does.
God help those women and God help us.
Phyllis, can you please tell us what happened to their attackers? Are there any laws against this? Are they enforced? What is the punishment under law? Did any relatives take revenge or defend them in any way?
Nov 23, 2009 - 2:41 pm 8. Norman Simms:God help the man who did this to MY daughter. I would carve him into pieces while he was still alive. If I had the paitence I would do the same to him and let him live with it. Does no one rise their defense?
Are there any Imams who publicly condone this? Any that speak out against it?
How widespread is this in Muslim countries? Is there an estimate in numbers? What about Eurabia? Any numbers there? Is there any organization to help them and spread the word at all? Did anyone send these pictures to Hillary Clinton and Obama? Or to Gloria Steinem? Or…?
Maybe Bill O’reilly, Glenn Beck, Greta Van Sustern…would do a story?
Sorry for so many questions…my heart is broken and flowing out of control.

Which is what you are calling out for.
Therefore, the culturally sterile, which engaged in cultural castration, do not accept anything that they demonize. Which pays a very close resemblance to those who threw acid on their victims, as Phyllis writes about in this blog entry.

Nov 23, 2009 - 11:36 pm 26. HellenoChristian:Here a video about one of them – there are more and other in Internet. Anyway this is interesting since it shows that there are Activists trying and doing something against “the practice”:
http://video.nytimes.com/video/2008/11/29/opinion/1194834033797/acid-attacks.html?scp=1&sq=pakistan%20acid%20attack&st=cse
Most interesting about this subject (Islamic sadism) is the following: “acid attacks” just show that Islam practices TORTURE. It goes the same everywhere in its Doctrine: from battering, to stoning, to beheading, to hanging (not to mention Hazing in the Military and the “treatement” of prisoners and dissidents in Islamic prisons from Islamic prisoners or jailers toward others, both Non-islamic and Islamic people) – all of those “punishment” are actually TORTURES. Before eventually and maybe the victim dies, they (Islamic people, following Islamic Doctrine) TORTURE him/her. The very Essence of Islam is TORTURE – both psychological and phisical.
Thank you for this article and I wonder when so called “humanitarian Organizations” or “Charities” or “human Rights’ Organizations” will eventually and clearly face and talk about TORTURE in Islam (or simply: ISLAMIC TORTURE – rapes and gang rapes are included in this very subject -).

Nov 24, 2009 - 1:55 am 29. Rajpreet:The fact of the matter is, violence against women is taking place the world over. In Pakistan acid violence against women (and men!) is happening in high numbers.
As is often the case, weapons that are most readily available are often the ones that are used. Stored on people’s shelves ready to be used for the fertilization of the cotton seed, nearly all homes in the Punjab region of Pakistan have highly concentrated acid at arms reach. Such a potent substance at such close proximity is a recipe for disaster in a country where violence against women is well-known to have reached crisis level. In a moment of fury acid becomes the weapon of choice.
Readily available at throw away prices, with no stringent control on the trade or sale of acid, acid violence has become a significant problem in Pakistan, and the Punjab province is the countries hotspot (which is not to say that attacks are limited to the rural areas – there is a pervasive problem of acid violence in the country’s two largest cities, Karachi and Lahore).
Nov 24, 2009 - 2:17 am 30. HellenoChristian:During this very beautiful (moving!) speech by Taslima Nasreen, acid attacks (against girls and women) are mentioned, together with the context which “wellcomes” and encourages them:

[Even a child-girl got acid burned (face): I saw her in a video, unfortunately I can't find the video anymore; I don't remember whether it was in Pakistan or Afghanistan, and eventually an Activist adopted the girl (fact that doesn't diminish the gruesomity and horribility of the attack. Imagine that after such an attack one remains not just "monstered", but above all medium-high handicapped for the rest of his/her life; this is pure sadism! But they don't stop to tell us that criticism toward them "hurts" their feelings .... Which feelings, I wonder?)].

Nov 24, 2009 - 8:36 am 37. Andria Senini:Ms. Chesler, Thank you for this piece about this horrific aspect of fanatical fundamentalism. Ignorance in every form is a threat to all of us and our vigilance is required. Our best weapons are truth, awareness and perspective.
Therefore, I regret to say I do not understand why the Sarah Palin ad would be displayed so prominently on an otherwise fine page such as this. Palin is the American version of fundamental hatred and ignorance, epitomizing of the smug self-superiority which is counter-productive to everything America stands for.
Deluding ourselves is a form of succumbing to fear, lowering us to the same level as our enemies and undermining our credibility to the point where we no longer stand as a leader in this world.
Truth resides in facts and evidence, not in self-promoting demagogues and purveyors of hate, stupidity and propoganda.

The U.N? (#43) Surely you jest!
The U.N. is run by the very countries that do these horrible crimes. The rest of the U.N. looks the other way because, like the fools they are, just help pass a ‘new’ human rights code that forbids criticizing religion(AKA- Islam).
The only way to stop this barbarity is to either cut all ties with them or bomb them into dust. Of course you know that cutting ties with the big oil producing countries is never going to happen.
The culture that breeds this sort of violent sickness is Islam. Stop Islam wherever it spreads. It is a disease. The vaccine is usually delivered by fighter-bombers and rifles.

Nov 24, 2009 - 9:47 pm 52. Liz:Alborz you are extremely ignorant if you think all of the Abrahamic faiths are dangerous. There’s always some bitter atheist around trying to associate Christianity and Judaism with Islamic terrorists. This is a lie. If you knew anything at all you would know that the teachings of the New Testament are the exact opposite of the teachings of the Koran. The Koran demands under threat of violence that people pay God. Jesus, after being subjected to violence, forgave his tormenters, freely giving the true God of peace to humanity. He is the humble Prince of Peace. Those who truly follow him have nothing to do with threats or violence. On the contrary, they sacrifice their own comforts to comfort others. Do your research before spewing lies.
Nov 25, 2009 - 12:31 am 53. Christy:Strangely, I was discussing a topic related to this with my 11 yr. old son. We were discussing why people do such horrible things to other people. I read many of the comments and I don’t believe that just saying that these people who committed these horrible acts against women are of one religious background or another really is the point. Let’s face it, there are MANY in the world (some right in your own countries) that view women as babbles or property. It’s not a matter of changing people’s religious orientation that would make this stop. Many cultures have viewed women only as an ends to a mean. Their worth coming from what they could get through marriages and such. Many cultures have had this view point. Think back a few centuries when the raping of a women was acceptable by most men and it was the woman who was shamed. She would even be shamed within her own house. Many countries have realized that women can contribute within society and have since made them a viable resource. They have realized that although women may not house the brawn, they are capable of problem solving and other resources, thus having a brain. The ideas of the people are what needs to change in order for there to be a difference. It isn’t in the minds and hearts of all men to be evil and to put horrors upon others, but there are enough evil beings in this world that when looking upon those pictures you have to look a bit harder to find the light- women with the strength of spirit to look into a camera and show the world that what happened to them may have only marred the canvass, but the beautiful work lies within…These women have shown a strength of character and I believe it is for this reason that the men who did this, did what they did. They were weak men who couldn’t withstand being opposed- either by a divorce, a broken engagement, or a refusal of marriage and settling a family dispute. Sadly, this happens beyond the veil…in the United States we call it domestic abuse. It happens too frequently! We can not stomp out all evil against women, but as women (and men who know the true value of a women) we should learn to be more supportive to the women who need a voice. My heart goes out to those women in the photographs, as well as my gratitude for showing the world that no matter what, you are beautiful! May we one day find our validation throughout the world and may the uneducated become enlightened!
Nov 25, 2009 - 3:21 am 54. Harold:Only the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that changes hearts will stop these attacks. John 3:16 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Nov 25, 2009 - 6:20 am 55. Gilbert S:In one way it is very frightening and shows the cruelty of people who call themselves worship God who is love. In otherwords we need to envy those who re persecuted as they will have a greater reward. We also need to knw that believers have authorityover he devil and we need to use that. That is how the USSR broke down we need to take authority over the fanatic moslems that the will not touch thebelievers. 1 Pet 5:8-10.
Nov 25, 2009 - 7:15 am 56. HellenoChristian:53. Christy, the inferiority of a woman and her being possessed by a man is INSTITUTIONALIZED in Islamic Religion and in its Legal System [*] rules that.
There is a great difference between such kind of institutionalized – psychological and often phisical – Violence toward women AND domestic Violence as it (still) happens in the West. By the way, in the West there have been and still are Movements which fight Against Discrimination of women and for Equality, and we have Laws protecting women (and human Beings) from abuses. In Islamic societies, as it happened to Aasya Hassan, if you (as a woman, as a male’s possession) dare to denounce your abuser, you will be accused of “breaking the Honor” of your family and your (Islamic) Community, and therefore subjected to be unofficially condemned to Death (being murdered) by someone of your family or Community. Islamic friendly Punishments for “Honor” killers are still very light in most Countries whose Constitution is based or inspired on Shari’a. Then please, try and differenciate between Islamic Reality and world and the rest of the World, which doesn’t refuse to “step forward” and “evolve” [about this subject "the rest of the World" (to whom the Islamic world and Islamic people belong and take part) experienced several Wars and Revolutions, but the Islamic displays reactionary Movements and behaviours all around the World. Its Backwardness is a willed one; not a "human" one. It belongs to its very Ideology, not (just) to the human nature of its perpetrators. Not the same to be said about Western Democracies. An example about this very essential Difference is to be found in "the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam" compared to "the Universal Human Rights' Declaration"].
[*] Islamic Legal System also known as Shari’a, with proper Courts, and proper Punishment – such as hanging, stoning, beheading, hand/foot amputation, lashes, … – when the Law is brocken – which could mean: a child/girl/woman being gang raped and being accused of Adultery since “she had Sex with someone who wasn’t her husband”, and therefore being condamned to be stoned/tortured to death, by a crow of “Allahu akbar” yelling people/citizens, her family members included. Note: I think it was last year that a 13 years girl got stoned in such a case; now, astonishment a part, the question is “how comes a 13 years girl was married? What kind of marriage was her one? A forced one? How old was her husband? Did he lawfully, according to Shari’a/Islamic Law beat her? -.

Women will not doctors be,
Jobs are not for such as us,
Worthless creatures owned by men,
They may beat us as they please.
When the Ta-Li-Ban come back,
I will marry old Rashid,
I must make a good third wife,
For I’m nine and just the age
Of the Prophet’s youngest bride
When she graced his marriage bed.
Peace should be upon his name,
He is perfect in all things.
Baby-wives obey and serve,
Keeping tears from off our cheeks.
When the Ta-Li-Ban come back,
Women then will know their place,
Mother must the burka wear,
Never show a man her face,
Father must go out with her,
Or they’ll whip her in the street.
When the Ta-Li-Ban come back,
Girls must not report a rape.
Lacking four Believers who
Testify it was by force,
They would scream beneath the stones,
Dying for adultery.
When America goes home,
And the Ta-Li-Ban come back,
We will know to thank you for
Living as our mothers lived,
All subservient to men,
Thirteen centuries ago.

Nov 25, 2009 - 1:21 pm 58. kenny komodo:Animals, just simply animals. Why are we trying to deal with a mindset that is firmly rooted in the 7th or 8th century. Does Obambi really believe that speaking softly and carrying a limp noodle instead of a stout stick is going to change any of the minds in the middle east? He’s living in fantasy land. The pictures of these poor women are horrible, they are scarred and mutilated physically and emotionally for the rest of their lives. When I see this kind of thing I want to encourage our government to set their cities aflame and free the people. Simply horrible. And the leftists want to bring this sort of thing to our country? Never…never…never…
Nov 25, 2009 - 2:47 pm 59. sunnieskye:I think all of you missed the point by miles. This is not just about Islam, or Muslims. This is about gender bias and a patrilinear culture in which women are less than human. Please don’t try to view what is happening here through narrow eyes. This also happens in India, where widows are burned alive with the corpse of the husband, or 12-year-old girls are murdered because they cry in pain at being introduced to near-rape on their “wedding” night. There are cultures here in America which, if not for our laws, would do the same. Anyone listen to rap? It’s full of woman-hate. Anyone here from the South? Anyone here Latina? We really haven’t come so far at all…

Nov 25, 2009 - 10:23 pm 62. HellenoChristian:59. Sunnysky: yes dear, and that’s exactly the reason why WE HAVE TO STOP Islam spreading, since it institutionalized and still institutionalize harsh Violence against women, and the – by it supposed – Subhumanity of women and their – by it supposed – need to be subjugated to men. IS THAT SO DIFFICULT TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MYSOGINY AND INSTITUTIONALIZED MYSOGINY? The West already fought against Mysoginy, and we are still fighting against it: above all, we have to fight against institutionalized Mysoginy, and above all when it tries and spreads all over the World (100% granted since VII century, Islamo-muhammadan Arabia). We need brave Feminists – both females and males – (to work for Countermysoginy).

Nov 27, 2009 - 1:14 am 64. Cassandra:Dear Dr. Chesler:
Your photographs are further irrefutable evidence that Islam panders to the Muslim male ego–if he cannot get his way or have what he wants, he “has the right” to ruin and destroy who or what eluded his grasp, simply because he is Muslim.
This mindset is as lethal as the HIV virus. The bearers of same should be eradicated from the face of the earth–and as soon as possible before they render civilization with all its wonderful acheivements extinct.
Were this miracle to occur, the women trapped in this nightmare would have a chance to make their way into the 21st century and begin their long journey into the self-respect, humanity, and intellectual accomplishemnts that so many of us already enjoy.

Nov 29, 2009 - 3:31 pm 71. Bob:All of the women pictured are from PAKISTAN, not Saudi Arabia. They have been subjected to horrible TRIBAL punishment which is not part of Islam. There are many cultural expressions of the Islamic faith, just as there are of the Christian faith. How many Christian traditions forbid women to speak in church? How many Christian traditions require “obedience” of the woman in marriage?
Please don’t take this comment as any kind of weak response to the domestic terror inmposed in PAKISATAN, not Saudi Arabia. It’s terrible and should end along with female genital mutilation in Africa. But, it’s very important to distinguish tribal customs from religious practice.
Nov 29, 2009 - 5:40 pm 72. HellenoChristian:71. Bob – are you forgetting, for instance, that a group of girls, in SAUDI ARABIA, have been left burning in a building, because they “did not wear a veil”, therefore the fireMEN did not rescue them from fire?
Did it ever happen to you to listen about oppression, “HONOR” KILLING and VIOLENCE against Islamic women, in the Islamic world,
and STONING, and other brutal – and unjustified – punishments which happen in SAUDI ARABIA, too?
Did someone tell you that in the West we are living in a Democracy, and that Church, whatever it says and states, cannot decide at the place of people, while Islam forbids personal Freedom of thinking and choice (Evolution included)?
Are you aware about the Differences between Christianity (please go to the New Testament or Gospel) and Islam (please go to Koran, Ahadith, Sira, and follow what Islamic scholars say)? You talk about Tribal practices: haven’t you noticed that Islam self is Tribal?
Psychological and physical oppression of women are part of Islam, you willing to accept/aknowledge it, or unwilling.
Nov 29, 2009 - 10:41 pm 73. Mel:joyce ann: Obama is not a Muslim, he is a christian, so get your facts straight. I am a liberal and I find these picture appalling, especially being a woman. Let us not forget how Bush took so many of our freedoms away.

THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT IS THAT OUR SO CALLED LEADER AND COMMANDER IN THIEF IS NOT QUALIFIED TO RUN A CANDY STORE AND WAS VOTED INTO THIS POSITION BY CORRUPT AND MINDLESS PEOPLE WHO IN THERE DEFENSE COULDNT PLACE A TWO DOLLAR BET AT A BINGO HALL AND GET IT RIGHT . It doesnt matter if he is muslim or black or from corrupt chicago or has radical ties to just about everyone he knows , which all should disqualify any one except the race from being considered for the office of this great country. He is just plain inept and a coward.

Dec 6, 2009 - 7:01 pm 78. Homer:Mel we are tired of you people’s haye against p[res. Bush. he kept us safe and he STILL cares. Was that idiot Obama at Ft. Hood??? NO
But Pres. Bush went down to see the people that lived and were in their hospital beds after surgeries, some 4-6. There is proof of it too.
You people need to wake up.
In the Koran it says to kill the infidels…WE are ALL infidels to their way of thinking.
Because of our illegal president being a muslim ;who knows when our country will be hit again. And it will be the fault of igorant people like you. Now this country is in a VERY dangerous place. Obama has surrounded himself with marxist and socialist who are doing his bidding. They don’t realize that since they are not muslim they will be the first to go.
.Obama understands when he declares Marshall Law, the military will NOT follow his orders, that is probably why he is sending them into combat.
And This is exactly what will ahppen in the U.S.A if the Muslims are NOT stopped and escorted OUT of this country, if we don’t stop this mess from happening then we will reap what will happen. NOTICE also that these things are all happening to women. There is NO such thing as divorce, and I surely hate divorce, but this is the result of a religion that to many people are told is a religion of “peace” NOT in history from Muhammed 630 a.d. until now! This religion is a religion of warfare and death, don’t believe me study on Muslims and Allah, he is a god w/no name (allah = the god) Better wise up people! Homer Stop being politically correct!!!
