The rites of passage do not have to be formal. If not available, the natural ones may be enough, meaning something other than artificial sheltered urban life. I had the good fortune as a kid to spend summers at my grandparents in a Southern Moravian village, with the exposure to all the fundamentals of the rural life. That is what is missing in lives of contemporary urban youngsters–they have no comprehension of how things work together and their interdependencies. Needless to say that this lack won’t be helpful to them in times that are come to pass. Which is of course a shame.

The women asking about soap-making this morning were aghast at the concept of extending their practical skills to butchering, except for the older woman from the Soviet Union, who got quiet. I became much better at self-defense after working on the chicken farm. I doubt I would have survived an encounter with Sonex, but I like to think I would have done some damage. Most of the people I see on a day-to-day basis would rather die than save themselves by killing their attacker. It boggles my mind.
