Apparently Obama did so poorly in his Rick Warren outing that his surrogates (whoops, reporters from major American papers) are parsing “Get Smart” references.
In that 1960s series, itself a spoof on James Bond movies, super-agent Max would go under a silly looking plastic cone whenever some secret had to be discussed. The joke was that even when the chief was also in a “cone of silence” he couldn’t hear Max either.
You might wonder what this has to do with the Obama-McCain debate moderated at Rick Warren’s Saddleback church this past Saturday. While Obama spoke first, McCain was supposed to be in a “cone of silence” so that the questions he would face would be equally new to him as they were to Obama.
Now the New York Times is claiming that McCain cheated. He was in his limo racing to the church, not in a “cone of silence.” The McCain campaign hotly denied that the senator was listening in and, umm, cheating.
Naturally lots of bloggers have piled on.
To call this a “tempest in a teapot” would be generous. Let’s say McCain really was listening in–which was news to Rick Warren. He looked visibly surprised to learn that McCain was not in the building the whole time. For the sake of argument, let’s concede McCain was in his motorcade and was listening in.
So what? Warren’s questions were not the word traps that the White House press corps specializes in. They were the kind of masterfully simple things that ordinary people would like to know: define rich, when does a human being get human rights, what would you do about poverty and AIDS? And so on.
The biggest crime is that the MSM hasn’t asked these questions of the candidates long before.
But the questions were not brain teasers. If you want to “tax the rich,” then you have to have some working definition of what rich is. So why can’t you tell us? If you have voted on abortion-related legislation (and both candidates have), you have to have some idea when a human being is entitled to certain rights–conception, birth, 18 years old, whatever. Any reasonably active political person would have thought about and debated these questions for years.
Still, the press hates questions about issues. They laugh at common citizens who stand up at town hall meetings and ask about issues. They roll their eyes and talk about his shirt. (Some of these citizen questions really matter, such as the question: Who is your favorite political philosopher? in the 2000 GOP primary. Bush’s answer (”Jesus Christ… because he changed my heart”) solidified support among evangelical and other voters.)
Instead, the press focuses on the horse race: who is ahead in the polls? Who said something dumb that might hurt their standing in the polls? Et cetera, et cetera.
Rick Warren showed-up the MSM and they got their revenge by claiming McCain cheated. What does that tell us about them?
UPDATE: Ann Althouse is taking a poll on the “Cone of Silence” non-story. The multiple choices say it all.

Aug 18, 2008 - 11:21 am 2. Assistant Village Idiot:Proposal: Let Obama answer the same questions again. He won’t do any better this time. It’s not phrasing, delivery, or gravitas that are Obama’s problem. It’s his answers.
Aug 18, 2008 - 11:45 am 3. dougf:You’re right. Obama was so nuanced he was virtually incoherent. He was worse than that if truth be told. He was BORING.
When I first saw/heard of this ego-driven Chicago pol, I really thought that he was something new and probably refreshing. I found him very effective and likable. His stand on Iraq was totally clueless of course but I once had thought that he was just pandering to the lunatic fringe(aka the MAJORITY) of his morally bankrupt Party. You know just doing the necessary, unpleasant though it was. But the rest — not too shabby.
Foolish me.
Then I realized with mounting horror that he truly believed all of his nonsense on Iraq, and had positions on other important matters which were highly, to say the least, problematic. And that basically he was far more pretentious than profound.
And he just kept on exposing himself to be —- an educated Idiot. He’s not nuanced, and insightful. He’s without real foundations, and will happily use words as useful distractions. Not to reveal a deeper Truth, but simply to conceal his inner void. A man running on empty ,except for one deeply held belief which supports his entire construct.
Obama is the Chosen One. He ‘deserves’ adoration.
Mohamed Ali was famous for his ” I Am The Greatest” line. But it was really just salesmanship, and truthfully he WAS pretty darn good. He walked the talk. Obama increasingly stands revealed as is ALL talk, and someone who seems to really believe his own press clippings.
No wonder his acolytes, cult members, and assorted camp followers, are now insisting that somehow McCain ‘cheated’. Like all true believers(including the man himself), they just can’t conceive that he SUCKS far more often than not. and that there really is No There, — There.
Saturday showed the ‘real’ Obama.
Scary wasn’t it ?
Aug 18, 2008 - 12:02 pm 4. jvon:I agree that McCain had an unfair advantage in this confrontation, but I think Obama misunderstands the nature of it.
The advantage McCain has is experience. Obama’s in way over his head and even if he’s too much of an egomaniac to grasp that the people around him must if they are making up stories like this.
Aug 18, 2008 - 12:16 pm 5. Zhombre:Minus the prepared text, the teleprompter,and 20,000 Germans, poor Obama is naked.
Aug 18, 2008 - 12:28 pm 6. HRPKathy:What dougf said. Mostly.
Here’s the problem with the accusation against McCain – McCain was consistent. He didn’t reverse himself on any issue, he didn’t ‘respond’ to anything Obama said (a temptation had he heard any of Obama’s segment), and he didn’t dishonestly portray his own previously held positions.
OTOH, the ‘above my paygrade’ remark was not only wrong it was a lie unless Illinois senators make more than US senators, in Mar 2001, Obama voted “present” on a bill that would protect the life of live born children of botched abortions. He didn’t think it was above his paygrade then to make a distinction on where life begins – even if he did define it well outside normalcy. At that point he redefined the word viable to exclude babies that survive outside the womb in the event that said survival occurs during abortion. All other accepted definitions of the word simply mean a baby that survives outside the womb. As a citizen born in this country it should have rights, but Mr. Obama considers the powerlessness of his victim before deciding its life has no merit. It has no votes.
There is some there, there, dougf, on this point we disagree. But the there that is there is ugly.
Aug 18, 2008 - 12:31 pm 7. j green:The “questions” were so elementary that they barely qualified as questions. To say McCain “cheated” on this is like saying McCain cheated on 2+2=4, and its now transparent that this story is being promoted because Obama looked like he was just learning how to count on his fingers.
Just remember:
1. Obama said if you make more than $250k per year, you are “doing well” and will see a “modest” tax increase. “Modest” as a modifier in this context means not small. Had he meant small, he would have said “small”, “minor”, “slight”, or any number of other words his Harvard education and Juris Doctorate put at his disposal–yet he chose the word “modest”.
2. His response on when a human being becomes a human being: the intellectual capacity to answer the questions is above his “pay grade”! He must have forgotten he is running for the highest office in the world. Doesn’t that answer mean he yields his opinion and authority on the entire abortion matter to the courts to legislate from the bench! So he has no basis to even take a position on the abortion issue.
3. On using embrionic stem cells, he says we should use embrionic lines unless we can use adult lines. What kind of gibberish answer is this if its not classic Obama double-speak that the media has blatantly ignored.
Yet no one in the media calls Obama out on the substance of what he said. His dumb answers are not to blame–instead, they change the subject to say that McCain sounded intelligent because he must have cheated. I guess Obama should be afforded even more shameless de facto affirmative action by being graded on a curve.
Aug 18, 2008 - 12:41 pm 8. newton:“Cone of silence”?!?
What is this? The Maury Povich Show? Oh. My. Goodness!
Aug 18, 2008 - 12:56 pm 9. Roy Lofquist:This is a huge blunder by Obama. These guys are the Keystone Kops of politics. Tin ears? They’re going to make tin ears a popular theme.
Are they mad? They’re questioning McCain’s honor! There are precious few in our history who have shown such devotion to “Duty, Honor, Country”. If there is nothing else the electorate knows about McCain it knows him to be an honorable man. I don’t think it will take too long for people to recognize that this is vicious slander.
Aug 18, 2008 - 12:57 pm 10. v for victory:Yes, maybe McCain could have cheated somehow, but why would he want to? He actually likes these impromptu settings!
He certainly seemed to handle the forum well, for the 15 minutes or so that I caught. Crisp.
Obama sounded horrible, the buzzing slurry of “ah” and “buuuut” and “aaaaaand” that is getting so easy to mimic now. He must think that makes him sound smart.
Obama was like listening to a William F. Buckley in a parallel universe, where nearly everything is reversed: pablum, liberal idiocy, humorless but, like Buckley, spoken in fits and starts from a posture relaxed at semi-supine.
Aug 18, 2008 - 1:04 pm 11. MaE:Maybe McCain should just put this to bed and offer to do a similar debate format, and he’d go first.
However, since McCain knows what kind of victims he’s dealing with, he should have been there on time. There’s no excuse, really, for him being as late as he was.
Aug 18, 2008 - 1:18 pm 12. Javelin:What a non story about a non story. But such unintentional irony is PM meat and potatoes.
PS: Obviously, with Bush’s and the rights’ infatuation with war, weapons, death penalty and the military, youd’d think Muhammad was their favorite “philosopher” not Jesus!
Aug 18, 2008 - 1:20 pm 13. ex-democrat:the comments from these obamabots (see, e.g. ‘javelin” above) are so truly idiotic that i’m beginning to wonder if they aren’t in fact mccain-bots playing counter-intelligence…
Aug 18, 2008 - 1:43 pm 14. Jaycee:In the interest of journalistic integrity, which most MSM news outlets do not honor, I would like to offer the following quote:
Aug 18, 2008 - 1:44 pm 15. Charlie (Colorado):“I cheated a little bit. I looked into this.”
That was OBAMA, in response to Warren’s specific question on adoption! What’s that? Was Obama revealing that he somehow received Warren’s questions in advance and had time to prepare answers while McCain did not?
I like a suggestion I saw elsewhere: set up a second set of questions, same venue and audience, and let Obama go second this time.
Aug 18, 2008 - 2:00 pm 16. Evil Pundit:This is a good sign. The fact that the Obama campaign is trying to spin this as “McCain cheated” means they perceive the result as “McCain won”.
Aug 18, 2008 - 2:00 pm 17. srlucado:“What a non story about a non story. But such unintentional irony is PM meat and potatoes.”
I see that didn’t stop *you* from reading and commenting.
Anyway, as someone said (on The Corner, I think), if Obama feels cheated, let’s repeat the whole event. Better still, let’s have a town hall meeting so they can both show how well they do in unrehearsed settings. Or better still, let’s have a bunch of town hall meetings.
If Obama is half as great as he claims to be, he should welcome the chance.

Aug 18, 2008 - 2:09 pm 19. always right:Yeah you’re right, this is a non-story.
For a real story, look at the story about about Obama’s lies on abortion, also found on this site. Your little guy is in way over his head.
Is it just me? I feel much more stupidified after hearing Obama’s labored but nuanced answers.
No wonder the libs look down their collective noses on me.
Aug 18, 2008 - 2:13 pm 20. Roderick Reilly:Yes, what dougf said for me too.
granted, we’re “preaching to the converted” here in terms of being almost universally hostile to Obama’s Presidential aspirations, but so many of us have come to the almost identical conclusions about Obama as dougf did. Eery, isn’t it? And I’ve seen this time and again on blog after blog.
Now — to be fair — we could say that we were all influenced by both our biases and our favorite ideological sources, but the pattern of opinion on this vapid, empty suit from Chicago (or Hawaii, or Indonesia, or . . . wherever) seem to transcend that. Senator Barack H. Obama is freakingly transparent as a shallow huckster to so many people that it’s going to an intersting commentary on the state of mind of the American people if he wins in November.
Aug 18, 2008 - 2:46 pm 21. David:How in the hell is it cheating if you knew the questions before hand, they both did, questions about morality and personal responsibility cannot be cheated on, only lied about.
Do I have this right ?
Aug 18, 2008 - 3:04 pm 22. Tom:Hussein Obama’s answers about morality and personal responsibility would have been different if he had known McCains answers ?
Or is McCain racist because he answered from the heart and not from the ways the polls said he should answer ?
exactly. check out some other blogs – there are way too many people out there who simply dont care how stupid their candidate is – they believe Andrea Mitchell and NBC and facts just are not going to get in the way. end of story…..what can you say(and any point anyway??)
Aug 18, 2008 - 3:23 pm 23. Mike Shuster:this is indeed one of the dumber non-issues of the campaign so far.

Aug 18, 2008 - 3:53 pm 25. Terry Gain:Everyone agrees that the 98 pound weakling didn’t do so hot in the Warren interview.
Given that he lacked the discernment and courage not to promote conceding Iraq to al Qaeda and Iran even as the war to liberate Iraq was entering its final victorious stages, the question is: why is anyone surprised that he comes off as a distant second to a true American hero- a man who had the wisdom and courage to argue for the correct course even when he was clearly in the minority.
Aug 18, 2008 - 7:01 pm 26. John Moore:ex-democrat,
Aug 18, 2008 - 7:10 pm 27. Believer:You mean “false flag?”
McCain was at his best the other night – cleaning Obama’s clock. It was obvious to everyone and this charge is Team Obama’s pathetic response.
It’s ridiculous to suggest McCain needed to cheat or to be prepped for it. McCain knows this is his strength. It’s why he suggested the two do a series of townhalls together.
And it’s why Obama refused. Obama is incapable of being straightforward and honest. He needs the carefully prepared remarks. The contrast between them is stark.
Frank Luntz had an intriguing suggestion: have McCain not give a speech at the Convention, but do a townhall instead. He can be himself and do what he obviously does so well.
What McCain did with Rick Warren was the same thing he’s done for years with reporters — sit down with them and be open and honest. And despite his being a member of the wrong party, they fell in love with him. But that was before the Fraud arrived who represents their preferred party and shared liberal views.
What we saw was a version of the Straight Talk Express. And it was beyond appealing. It was winning. Obama has reason to worry.
Who’s not in love with McCain now?
Aug 18, 2008 - 8:18 pm 28. Dave II:This “would be” a non-story if Andrea Mitchell had bothered not to bring up the ridiculous accusation on Meet The Press (she just couldn’t help herself!), and then McCain’s camp not written a letter of protest to NBC. That it continues for a few more days actually doesn’t hurt McCain much at all…because it only goes to show the tactics of a losing camapaign and emphasize the fact that McCain is FAR and AWAY the most qualified for President.
Even Keith Olbermein (yes, I forced myself to watch him tonight) was ranting in his usual way about this and why the McCain campaign felt it neccessary to protest a couple of little “remarks” that meant little if anything (gee, keith…other than to point out network bias??? Which YOU certainly don’t practice on a daily basis!) and oh…McCain HAD the opportunity to use a radio, cell phone, blackberry, etc., in the car, in the green room…so, how in the hell can you explain McCain doing so well if he didn’t know what was coming???? (The last question was mine but it basically was his point!)
Simple, you pathetic twerp!!!!
McCain KNOWS his heart and KNOWS what he believes and doesn’t have to hem, haw, “uhh” and “ahh” his answers to death, and fill them with pseudo- academic intellectual bullcrap and nuance, because he is “afraid” of how Pastor Rick, the audience, or those listening across America might take his answers the “wrong” way, or think he was a light- weight political hack seeking an office waaay over his head, and he needed to hide that fact and get through this as best as possible so he could get back to the security and comfort of his precious teleprompter and avoid any more of these “townhall” questioning forums where someone might actually put him on the spot and make him answer a question about who he will depend on in his administration, or “evil”, or “morality, or, God-forbid, the human rights of a living, breathing baby!!!
Too bad for Obama…because that is EXACTLY what we think and that image will NOT GO AWAY now for the majority of Americans.
He has met his Waterloo!
Aug 18, 2008 - 9:49 pm 29. chicago:How in the world could anyone cheat on questions that ask for what their principles are? it’s like saying that McCain copied someone elses principles….oooops, sorry, Obama does it all the time! LOL!
Aug 18, 2008 - 10:50 pm 30. ex-democrat:either that or Tree Stump For Obama perhaps.
Aug 18, 2008 - 10:53 pm 31. Rachel Peepers:Guys,
Great comments. If you don’t mind, for what it’s worth, Rachel would like to put in her two cents.
First, permit me to rewind back to 1960 when Kennedy and Nixon had their much ballyhooed TV debate.
Well, a few years ago, I met the guy who was supposed to make them up that night.
Said he was about to make up Nixon when Nixon suddenly asked, “Did Kennedy get made up?” And the make up guy truthfully said, “No. Kennedy didn’t want make up.”
Of course Kennedy was young and tanned and Nixon was pale as Hillary’s thighs with a poorly shaven face (poorly shaven as Hillary’s…I’ll pass on that one.
So, anyhoots, that’s how Nixon came to look so bad, which probably cost him a quarter percent of the vote. Just about what he lost the popular vote by.
Well, I think this Saddleback thing is going to go down in history, too as the event that turned the election. Fact is, like most every other person not in a straight jacket, I’ve never seen Obama do so bad and John so well.
The poor Democrats.
Remember when they’d lose elections and send an army of lawyers to institute law suits? Remember Florida when they had a collective temper tantrum saying Bush cheated? The machines were rigged. The hanging chads had hung Kerry out to dry, and he wasn’t going to take it lying down.
My point being, when Democrats start yelling, “You cheaters”, you know they’re in trouble. Waste deep in quicksand. Because as kids one of the first things we learn is “You cheated” is the whine and whale of losers.
It also makes me chuckle to myself how the naive Democrats thought there really was some kind of sound proof, Charles Van Dorenesque booth.
The $64,000 question is how can they be so dumb. And on so many levels. Or did they think Rick Warren called Jerry Seinfeld and asked if he still had the plastic bubble- boy bubble? Remember that episode? To me, these days, just when I think the Obama clan can’t get any dumber, they totally redeem themselves.
And did you catch Barack catch himself almost criticizing Clarence Thomas for lack of exper…I mean strength. Imagine if Barack had let that word, “experience” slip out completely. I think overall he really lost his cool that night.
I know, you can’t lose what you never had. I betcha he dances like a white person, too.
Now the fun part.
With B.O. stinking up the Saddlebrook church, what do you think the Clinton attack dogs are going to do? Just bark? No, they’ll sniff around, and realize how severely Barack’s people have been knocked back on their heals. Barack’s goal line fumble is their chance to return it 99 yards for the touchdown.
One other thing, someplace I wrote that I thought Barack had made a huge mistake giving the Clintons so much convention air time.
Well, I think the chickens are coming home to roost. Rooster Bill and Hillary the hen are going to use Barack’s awe aspiring bad performance at Saddlebrook to make some last gasp power play with the convention delegates. It’s like putting a box of crisy cream donuts in front the power hungry couple on a Sunday morning when they slept late and skipped church for the zillionth time. I mean, I think the Saddleback fiasco is the slip-up Hill and Bill have been waiting for with bated, no, morning breath.
How they’ll play it I’d have to call my Dad, but if Saddleback was the bloody car wreck, the Clintons are the lawyers chasing the Barack ambulance.
Actually, when I sit back and think about it, to me, this election is becoming a well written movie script. Maybe a Rocky movie, (for the Obamas a Rocky Horror movie) with McCain getting pummeled by the insanestream media, getting knocked down and pulling himself up again and again, and then finally, just when you think he’s done for, reaching back for his last ounce of energy to belt Barack with a vicious frazier-like left to the gut, doubling him over in pain, rocking his ringside handlers, and sending shock waves to Obama worshipers from Rodeo Drive to Sedgwick Avenue (in the Bronx).
It’s all pretty funny to witness, although when I realize how high the stakes are, it kind of scares me to think this Obama train got so far down the tracks before somebody in the Democratic Party had the sense to put the brakes on it, and realize Barack is capable of selling this country kit and caboodle down the river.
Never happened. If it wasn’t for Saturday night live with John McCain playing the leading roll, we might all by crying in our beer.
Speaking of my gullible college classmates. Some of them, in fact, still have Obama fever. Which is defined in Webster’s as a cross between Scarlet Fever and Malaria, only a hundred times worse.
Aug 18, 2008 - 11:22 pm 32. jvon:Having thought about this more I think if they ever do another one of these (which seems unlikely), McCain should offer to go first with Obama standing right there so he can hear all his answers.
No matter what Obama said at that point, he’s still look like an idiot.

Exactly. Obama camp opens itself up for round II. At which point they will refuse, even given ‘favorable’ treatment.
It is exactly like we have always suspected, Obama and the people he surround himself with are way over their heads.
Aug 19, 2008 - 8:04 am 39. Jean Cole:I WATCHED AND LISTENED TO THE CIVIL FORUM SATURDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 16. FOR SENATOR MCCAIN, THE QUESTIONS WERE GIVEN TO HIM VERY FAST, BECAUSE HE WAS ANSWERING THEM FASTLY (A MAN OF EXPERIENCE). THERE WAS NO WAY HE COULD HAVE REMEMBERED THOSE QUESTIONS THAT WERE GIVEN TO OBAMA, WHO HUMMED HAWED AROUND TO EVEN GIVE ANSWERS.
Aug 19, 2008 - 8:36 am 40. Dave II:Jean-
Interesting point! I’m amazed for all the criticism and “jokes” McCain gets from the left for being OLD, out-of-touch, and physically barely able to walk (gee…Obama can shoot a 3-pointer! Did you see that?) that he could be smart enough to memorize all the questions, remember how Obama answered them, and then fire back a quick reply specifically to make Obama look bad!
Even I had trouble remembering the question after Obama got through with his “nuanced” answers!!!
Losers whine and cry “he cheated”, and winners simply smile and say, “Next question!”.
Aug 19, 2008 - 10:14 am 41. Kevin:The “cone of silence” was used in the TV show, “Get Smart.” Something Obama needs to get really quick, smart. Hate to say this, no I don’t, but education doesn’t make you smart. Life experience makes you smart, provided one learns from it. Formal education just makes you, well, educated.

Aug 19, 2008 - 12:35 pm 43. j green:Regarding your update about the poll with the pro-Obama slanted choices, you are absolutely right. I selected the only logical choice (and the correct one): “The Obama campaign has started this meme to distract us from Obama’s bad performance.”
If you look at the results, as of my vote, 73% selected my choice, or 3,191. The complete results were 3%, 1%, 8%, 73%, 4%, 11%.
2nd place at 11% was: “We don’t know if McCain “cheated,” but the accusation of cheating is worse anyway, so Obama loses.” In other words, the second most popular position was that the accusation itself shows Obama’s true colors and that McCain’s alleged cheating is irrelevant overall.
3rd place at 8% also flatly say that because he was a hostage he is not dishonoarable enough to listen. They must have assumed no one wold ever choose this choice since it sounds corny, but apparently 339 people agreed with this.
Basically, 92% of the people on this slanted poll defend McCain. Though its not scientific, let’s hope it is an indication that the people won’t fall for Obama’s damage control.
This “cone of silence” bit was referred to by the host, and it sounded like he was joking or exagerating. When I heard it, I thought he was joking–I somehow didn’t expect that he was locked in the restroom of that studio. Furthermore, there is absolutely no proof that I have seen that Obama ever expected or even demanded that McCain be placed in a “cone of silence”. The notion itself is dumb, that a presidential candidate be placed for an hour completely out-of-touch with the entire world.
OBMAMA HAS NEVER EVER ASSERTED THAT MCCAIN CHEATED BY NOT NOT NOT BEING IN A CONE OF SILENCE, put in other words that he was not in some sort of locked dark incommunicado room as agreed in advance–this would be the logical assertion if McCain had actually cheated. Obama would be yelling “he wasn’t in that locked room as we agreed!!!” Rather, the accusation is that McCain cheated by listening, though apparently McCain was under no obligation to be tranquilized and dead to the world while Obama had his grand interview. Therefore, those were the terms that Obama the idiot agreed to, anbd they never included a provision that McCain would be sent to the dark side of the moon. If McCain listened, he should be given a medal, but I honestly think that McCain is too stupidly honorable to have listened, anyway, so this is all moot and Obama succeeeded once again at changing the subject. And we are still stuck with this dunce McCain.
Aug 19, 2008 - 10:30 pm 44. j green:Put more simply, Obama’s dunces say McCain cheated by not being in a “cone of silence” and not becasue he listened.
Well, did McCain ever agree to be in a “cone of silence”?
And no one accuses him of listening when he agreed not to listen, which begs the following obvious question, forgetting this “cone of silence business”: did he at least agree not to listen?
It doesn’t appear he broke any agreements so he did absolutely nothing wrong even if he did listen. And the questions were gut and feeling questions to which he should already have HIS OWN answers.

Aug 20, 2008 - 1:08 pm 46. Chuck:Will there be another type of session like this…. NO! Obama has already refused to do “Town Hall” style meetings or debates.
The reason is obvious. He does not do well when asked to respond to questions about issues extemporaneously. McCain does.
McCain does because he has been on the hot seat before and has the experience to know he must answer directly, honestly, and reasonably quickly. Stalling reveals a desire or intention to obfuscate.
Did a fine job defining more wars too boot!
