McCain’s Houses

The talking point of the day: Sen. John McCain does not know how many houses he owns.

In a classic gaffe, he tells a reporter to check with his staff; he just doesn’t know. The McCain campaign says “at least” four. Newsweek estimates seven.

Politico has the story that everyone is linking to.

Almost immediately Obama and his favorite surrogate, Gov. Kaine, went on the attack. Here’s Obama’s attack:

At a campaign appearance in Chester, Va., on Thursday morning, Obama said: “Somebody asked John McCain, ‘How many houses do you have?’ And he said, I’m not sure. I’ll have to check with my staff. True quote: I’m not sure, I’ll have to check with my staff. So they asked his staff and he said, at least four. At least four! …

“If you’re like me and you’ve got one house – or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home — you might have a different perspective. By the way, the answer is: John McCain has seven homes. So there’s just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain’s world and what people are going through every single day here in America.”

And the McCain response, also from Politico:

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said in response: “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people ‘cling’ to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?”

Okay, standard political boilerplate on both sides.

Here’s two truths that the McCain campaign can’t say: one, it is Cindy McCain’s money and not his. Therefore, he doesn’t know how she spends it. It is possible, even likely, that the senator has not even been to all of these houses. Most likely they are investment properties, which have full-time tenants. As for the homes that the senator and his wife actually use… let’s say it is three. If McCain says three and it turns out there are two or three or four more investment properties, then it looks like he lied about something he should automatically know the answer to. He is too smart a politician to guess. So the classic senatorial “check with the staff” dodge. Maybe Cindy’s accountant knows…

Second, McCain is not the richest U.S. Senator. And not the second richest either. Does John Kerry know how many houses his wife owns? What about Ted Kennedy? Or West Virginia’s senator John D. Rockefeller IV? People who lives in glass houses and forget how many glass houses they live in…

For better or for worse, the senate is a rich man’s club. This is largely due to campaign finance laws, which limits how much other people can give you but doesn’t limit how much you (or your wife) can give to you, and partly due to a kind of “House of Lords” tradition. (Of course, McCain is to blame for last two iterations of “campaign-finance reform.)

Finally, McCain had one good answer open to him when asked how many houses he owns: None. My wife owns them all.

A lot of guys can identify with that.

In the interest of fairness, someone should ask McCain how many of his wife’s houses were bought with the assistance of convicted felons like Tony Rezko.

Aug 21, 2008 - 12:38 pm 3. jvon:

With the housing slump, is it really that bad that McCain is seven times more invested in the housing market than Obama is? He’ll have that much more motivation to straighten things out.

I do think “my wife owns them all” would have been beautiful, but Obama would have ended up using it against him somehow. Remember how we all abused Kerry. Good times, good times, but the Dems can do it too.

Maybe McCain said that knowing that Obama would shoot his mouth off and he could come back at him with the Rezko thing? It seems just remotely possible.

Touche, Larry J! To that, I’d only add to ask about any recent island vacationing during this campaign…you know, just like every Tom, Dick and Hussein does….

This is nothing but political subterfuge.Pablum.How many houses a presidential candidate owns is irrelevant.Nothing but a futile attempt at class warfare. The only house that really matters in this argument is the home that was purchased in Hyde Park by Obama with the help of his convicted felon friend, Tony Rezko. Also, the subsequent purchase of the divided parcel of land adjacent to the Obama home in Hyde Park by the Obamas, again with the help and complicity of one Tony Rezko(Rezko’s wife) must be carefully investigated, examined and scrutinized.Obama wants to talk about homes? This guy is clueless.

“For better or for worse, the senate is a rich man’s club.”

True, but it’s the Republicans who paint Obama as an elitist. That’s why they’re going to get some flak for this.

“In the interest of fairness, someone should ask McCain how many of his wife’s houses were bought with the assistance of convicted felons like Tony Rezko.”

Do you really want people to start talking about Cindy’s business partner Charles Keating? I don’t think that you do.

Aug 21, 2008 - 1:16 pm 8. chicago:

McCcain should’ve answered:

“I don’t know how many houses I own but I guarantee you that I never asked a felon to help me acquire any of them.”

this is just another attempt by liberals to punish success.

“yup, being successful and rich is bad so you better vote democrat. give us your wealth so we can give it away to those who doesn’t want to work hard for anything in their lives. see, even our candidate follows that principle! we practice what we preach.”

nutjobs!

Of course Obama is more like us. Who doesn’t love arugala? Who doesn’t know a guy from the neighborhood who was a terrorist? Who wasn’t mentored by a leading member of the communist party? Who of us hasn’t attended a church for 20 years led by a preacher who spews out racists comments more frequently than amens? Which one of us hs not lived with an illegal Pakistani and then traveled to his homeland with him, and oh yeah, forgot to mention it in his best selling memoir? Who hasn’t gotten a sweet heart real estate deal from a convicted influence peddler? Who hasn’t had a spouse get a 200% raise after we were elected to the Senate and then which of us has not earmarked $1 million to our spouses place of employment? Obama, just like you and me.

The problem with trying “I don’t know how many houses I own but I guarantee you that I never asked a felon to help me acquire any of them.” is that it might not be true.

Two presidential candidates both with business ties to convicted felons. What are the odds?

Aug 21, 2008 - 2:10 pm 14. Ed Wallis:

We could ask both:

“How many anti-American, racist sermons have you attended over the last 20 years?”

It seems desperate for the “above personal attacks” political crowd to be ragging on McCain (& wife) this way.

When McCain made his $5 million comment at Saddleback Saturday night, he joked they’d try to make hay of it.

Aug 21, 2008 - 2:55 pm 18. Paul:

Maybe I’m just not informed, but WHY DOES THE QUANTITY OF McCAIN’S HOUSES OR CARS, ETC. MATTER? If it is personal property, why is it anyone else’s concern? The tactic of bashing Mr. McCain because of property legally obtained by him or his wife is a hypocritical and pathetic reflection on the intentions of Obamanation adherents as well as upon the character of Mr. Obama himself.

Aug 21, 2008 - 3:08 pm 19. RAK:

Who’s rich? I guess Obama thinks that because he is not as rich as John and Cindy MCain that he can act like he is one of the working class people. Question. I believe Obama is going to raise taxes on the rich and the rich to him means anyone who makes over $250,000. Do you think it’s fair for someone who makes $250.000 a year to pay the same rate of tax as someone who makes $1 million, $5 million, $20 million or more. I think not. And people seem to forget that even though President Bush lowered taxes, revenues tripled. But the Democrats love to tax and tax, acting as if they are helping the poor. Problem is after years of helping the poor, there are still poor people. The only way you are going to help poor people better their lives is if you direct their lives 24 hours a day. Think about it. As long as people choose not to get and education, even a high school education, have babies when they are still babies themselves and can’t even take care of themselves, there will be poor people. That is called freedom. Yes there are people who are poor through no fault of their own. And if it wasn’t for all the freeloaders there would be plenty of money to help the truly poor.

Aug 21, 2008 - 3:12 pm 20. Believer:

Obama and Team are leaping on anything right now to distract from the ugly truth regarding his votes (yes, ‘vote’ is plural) to deny lifesaving aid to infants that survive abortions — and the way he handled that question during the Saddleback Forum.

Instead of telling the truth, he tried to sell us a lie while calling others – who revealed the truth – the liars. I’ve heard he’s since admitted his ‘error.’

Too late.

The cold, calculating one hopefully won’t recover from that bit of history coming to bite him in the rear. The video testimony of the nurse who held one infant for 45 min. until he died is nothing less than heartbreaking for most humans, but left the self-proclaimed messiah unmoved.

More and more people are finally becoming aware this is a man who becomes far less appealing the more you know about him. In fact, for some of us, repugnant.

I would also note that it’s fair to remember that in at least one of the McCains’ homes a critically ill orphan from Bangladesh was welcomed, loved and nurtured. Senator McCain and his wife adopted little Bridget in 1993, I believe.

The stark contrasts between these two men continue to reveal themselves.

Aug 21, 2008 - 4:06 pm 21. Joshua:

Did you see Obama today attempting to make a profound political point about John McCain’s answer? He butchered it! His stuttering, stammering “Can you believe what a rich, old dope John McCain is” delivery fell so flat it was actually funny. The more Obama opens his mouth without a teleprompter the more he reminds me of a 7th grader (apologies to 7th graders) running for class president.

His complete lack of core beliefs would not allow him to deliver what should have been a very funny attack on John McCain. His timing was off, his preacher cadence was off, his selective pause was off and to top it off he just didn’t look like he even believed what he was saying. He’s tired, he’s struggling and he is reaching for anything, anything that might get traction in the media lovefest.

I can’t wait to see how the Dumbocrats overplay this. They’re going to score some political points on this but mark my words, they’ll have 2 million t-shirts printed up that say “I have one house” and hand them out in Denver and nobody will laugh. I can’t wait.

NEW Obama – Ayers Ad….The One should be very, very scared. great job by American Issues Project:

http://www.americanissuesproject.org/american-issue-project-news/american-issues-project-launches-television-ad-campaign.html

http://americanissuesproject.org/

The American Issues Project today announced the debut of a new television advertising campaign examining the relationship between Sen. Barack Obama and unrepentant 1960’s domestic terrorist, William Ayers. The ad — entitled “Know Enough?” — begins with a simple, yet pointed question: “Beyond the speeches, how much do you really know about Barack Obama?”

Supported by over one hundred pages of back-up documentation and historical accounts, the American Issues Project is using this ad to shed light on Obama’s friendship with Ayers, the former leader of an American terrorist group known as Weather Underground.

Remarkably, Ayers’ group claimed responsibility for the bombings of a New York City Police headquarters, the US Capitol Building, and the Pentagon in the 1970s. Years later, Ayers proudly claims his group “didn’t do enough.”

“Given the real time news cycle we live in today, many important issues and controversies that impact our country simply do not receive the time and examination they deserve,” said Ed Martin, president of the American Issues Project. “We are in this for the long haul and look forward to engaging in a broad range of issues well beyond the campaign. The launch of our immediate advocacy effort is a direct response to Obama’s rejection of public financing, which will allow the liberal 527s and other leftist organizations to dramatically outspend conservatives this election cycle.”

The ad can be viewed by clicking here .

The American Issues Project is a 501(c)4 organization representing a coalition of conservative activists committed to raising important issues that deserve deeper examination given their impact on policy. In accordance with federal law, the American Issues Project only solicits and accepts contributions from individuals and not from any business corporation.

RAK – And people seem to forget that even though President Bush lowered taxes, revenues tripled.

People seem to forget because:

1. Bush created 3.8 trillion in new debt.
2. He took on more foreign debt to finance his government and wars than all previous Presidents combined.
3. Because revenues didn’t triple.
4. But the Democrats love to tax and tax As if the 42% increase in Federal government spending and 2 trillion in elective war spending didn’t happen when Republicans controlled Congress and the Presidency. And didn’t veto a single spending bill in 8 years, and the Republican “corrupticans” did not spend like “reckless sailors” in pork, earmarks, and lobbyist favors and tax cuts for the rich.

The only difference is that Democrats prefer to tax to pay as you go for reckless spending by their party. While Republicans favor enriching their pals in “The Base”, protecting their new riches from government largess from estate taxes – and foist the whole bill on future generations that did not benefit from the corruption – to pay off lenders like Saudi Arabia, China with higher taxes once Bush and his fellow thieves are long gone from office.

I write that not as a Democrat, but a Republican absolutely disgusted with the betrayal of the 1994 Republican takeover by Bush II and a class of corrupt “cronyists” that showed the lie of Republican leaders committed to the middle class, competent&responsible government, and spending restraint.
My only regret about the 2006 vote casting them out for betrayal was that it swept out some good people with the bad, and the worst of the lot, except Stevens and Young, went into lucrative retirement before voters could say what slimey assholes the likes of Delay and Hastert were.

Aug 21, 2008 - 5:48 pm 29. Rachel Peepers:

Flash.

When the brown eyed handsome man informed a stunned audience that there are 57 states in the U.S., John McCain didn’t say, “Oh Jiminy Cricket, let’s do a commercial about it. What a funny gaffe.”

After all, there were and are much more important things to talk about. (Like how to bring down the price of gasoline).

On the other hand, when John McCain couldn’t answer a question about how many homes he owned, the Obama crew jumped up and down like school boys chortling and laughing about what a neat commercial they should make to poke fun at him.

Matter of fact, Barack’s Chinese-fire-drill-of-a campaign staff squandered $130,000 on a commercial talking about McCain’s home life. I wonder how Barack feels about his buddy John Edwards not being able to remember how many children
he has. That’s at least fodder for a fifteen second spot.

Guys, this tempest in Barack’s cerebrum comes under the category, in Rachel’s humble opinion, of grasping for straws.

I guess, it’s understandable, seeing as how this brainchild of a candidate just spent an entire Saturday night stumbling and bumbling over one question after another, causing his poll numbers to drop like a rock. Certainly, as fast as John Edwards pants most every time he was alone with Rielle Hunter, novice documentarian and experienced hot chick.

Much as John Edwards has trouble with self control, I guess pouncing on a John McCain verbal misstep, “gaffe” if you like, was just too hard for the uniter to resist.

Which reminds me of how early in the campaign Barack went around shooting himself in the foot by shooting off his mouth telling a stupified audience that, “Since POW John McCain broke under torture, he’s likely to break under the pressure of being President”.

Incidentally, I have the video tape to prove it.

Quickly, Barack’s henchmen found out that attacking a war hero was not the way to go.

Oh, well, you live and learn.

Let me conclude by asking Barack how many mortgages his crooked friends got him that were more than three points under prime. Or when life begins. Or how to win a war. Not sure? But how many homes he owns Barack can tell you without hesitation.

Speaking of hesitation, I have to advise the beautiful Michelle not to measure for new drapes just yet.

After laughing at a war hero; a man whose duty, honor and country have always come first, Michelle, you can bet your big bottom dollar you’re a lot less likely to be moving into that big house in Washington.

This country needs a commander in chief. Not a small man with a large ego who, granted, may have the ambition to be commander and chief.

But there’s another prerequisite that’s far more important: It’s not about course credits or law degrees.

It’s about something deep within you; It’s about having the moral will, the steely courage, the unbridled commitment to country, God and family.

To sum it up, I don’t think Barack respects the sacrifice good men and women have made; the price they’ve paid in blood so that we can enjoy the privilege of living in freedom.

How often do we get a chance to elect a true American hero?

As I said, Barack can tell you how many houses he has.

And John McCain can tell you how many sacrifices he’s made for these fifty states.

But, you know what? He won’t.

What he will say is that he wasn’t a hero. But that he served in the company of heroes.

If John wants to leave it at that, I won’t make a commercial out of it. That’s good enough for me.

Rachel Peepers – Wow! Why stop there, you were just getting warmed up! It is absolutely astonishing to me how liberal socialists and their neo-comm (neo-communist) buddies like cedarford & javelin don’t want to be bothered with the facts.

Going back to my earlier point, I really can’t wait to see the Dumbocrats run McCain’s statement into the ground and continue to burn Obama’s poll numbers to the ground. Barack, like his neo-comm supporters don’t have the slightest grasp of an honorable man like John McCain giving an honest answer to a loaded question.

If he would have said “I have 7 houses” he would be getting the same grief. Since he was thoughtful (not stammering thoughtful like Obama) and simply honest because Cindy is a fully capable and successful women who owns her own investment properties he said “I don’t know, let me ask my staff” he’s gonna get grief too. Boris,

Actually, you’re right about one thing.

The idea that Al Gore invented the internet dogged Gore throughout his Presidential campaign. And, to your point, it was something Gore never really claimed.

Of course, if Alan didn’t have such a Biden-esque tendency to brag, that particular mis-characterization, in Rachel’s humble opinion, wouldn’t have struck such a responsive chord.

Which reminds me of another classic example of Gore braggadocio. (Sorry if I screwed up the spelling.)

This I think Gore actually claimed. To wit, that “Love Story” was based on his life.

Al’s real life roommate at Harvard, actor,Tommy Lee Jones, played the role of one of Oliver Barret’s roommates in the movie. And apparently, Gore knew Erich Siegel. So there seemed to be a connection.

Anyway, eight years ago, Rachel was doing a little, shall I say, favor for the Republican Party. And wrote this about Gore’s contention that “Love Story” was based on his life.

As I remember, Rachel wrote something like: “Well, if Love Story was based on your life, Al, as you say, then how come Tipper is still alive?”

Sad to say, but I miss Gore running for election. Targeting Al is, well, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Or, maybe, more like Muhammad Ali’s November 22, 1965, battering of Floyd Patterson so that by the end of the fight, Floyd looked more like Carmen Basilio than himself.

Those were the days.

And speaking of, “All in the Family”, who can tell me the opening line of the song that opened every show?” The winner gets a Rachelian gold star.

The McCain people should turn this around.

Rachel Peepers”

“Boy, the way Glen Miller played. Songs that made the Hit Parade. Guys like us, we had it made” and yes, I’m old enough to remember the first show too.

P.S. I do enjoy your comments.

Has anyone considered the cumulative cost of Biden’s Acela rides – at least per annum?

Over on blogs4God, I do some math – calculating that if Biden potentially currently spends anywhere from $23k to 30k per year commuting … imagine how many houses that would have purchased over 30 years?

I’m thinking that the real hypicrits here are the dems They are the ones that claim enviromentalism while they use more energy in their one house than 20 average american homes… What happened to the American spirit where you dreamed of being a success and IF you got wealth you were living the american dream? I would think that Democraps should embrace that..(fat chance) after all are they not supposed to be the party of the People.. cough cough…. No… wait.. they are the party that is in bed with more special intrest groups than I wish to think about.

I love the comments, new to the page… keep up the good work everyone.
