Palin Hacker’s Identity is Revealed

The hacker is David Kernell, the 20-year old son of Mike Kernell, a Democrat and elected  state representative in Tennessee, according to Nashville’s largest newspaper, the Tennessean.

I predict that the same crowd that said that Palin should have been able to control her 17-year old daughter will defend the 2o-year old hacker by saying no one can control their kids. At least they will be right once.

If State Rep. Kernell refuses to cooperate with the investigation, the story will get more interesting.

Still, it will be interesting to see what hacker David Kernell has to say for himself.  Why did he do it? What did he think he would find? Does he think he did something wrong? Who introduced him to the Associated Press, which ran with the story? And why did they protect him, even after his father was willing to give him up?

There is a lot more to this story than has emerged so far. Hopefully some enterprising blogger will dig it out…

UPDATE: Terry Frank has screen shots of his facebook pages. Seems there might be a connection to the Obama campaign.

SECOND UPDATE: A well-informed Tennessee radio host Steve Gill told me this about the hacker’s dad: “He is an extremely left-wing Representative from Memphis who has been in the legislature 32 years and has never had any job other than professional politician.”

Makes you wonder what the dad’s role was, if any…

Kernellgate may not have the legs of Rathergate, but they have alot in common — an illegal attempt to smear a candidate in Sept. with strong ties to the Internet. Rather was a media icon of course, too swept up in his own hubris to recognize the danger of what he was being dragged into. Kernell is a nobody who wanted to be a somebody, found nothing, then dumped his hoard on others, unplugged and zoned out. An interesting and creepy story, but since Kernell has already confessed, while still hiding behind a screen name, I do not think any more big trees will be falling as a result of this little weed being pulled up. I hope you Pajamas Folks keep digging, but I don’t have much hope you’ll uncover much else.

Seems to me Obama was in Nashville recently, and seemed too smug in his demeanor. He seemed to exude the aura of having Tennessee in his pocket, and that he didn’t have to work to take over. With the revelation of the culprit on the Palin hacking, perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye, Could Obama have backed the young man financially, as well as giving him certain information? The boy’s tie-in with Obama’s camp appears to be just too coincidental to be coincidence, and it makes me very uncomfortable.

Don’t you think that if a campaign was unscrupulous enough to hack into someones email, that they would take better advantage of it? I mean seriously, this person could have sent all sorts of incriminating emails to her contacts concerning, say, the State Trooper investigation. Then either leaked it or waited to see if the account was subpoenaed. The original kid, this David fellow, was obviously some dumb kid that got lucky and then had know idea what to do with the information he had.

Sep 19, 2008 - 2:55 am 17. LeighB:

There is so much to say about this story, if true. I have just looked at several other MSM sites and not one has anything on this. Ties to the Obama campaign–if not actual ties, he seems to have the style they like.

My last question is for women everywhere–what is it going to take for you to open your eyes and think about why you support the Democrats. What “type” of woman will they support? If you have something in common with Hillary, no. If you are more like Palin, double-no. The party has a lot to answer for in how it treats the majority gender.

Sep 19, 2008 - 3:01 am 18. RE:

What’s does a little thing like the law matter if it stands in the way of The Cause?

It’s pathetic how the media treats these stories. They should be going crazy with, but it seems like only terrostists have rights to them.

The press does cover for Democrats.

There was a Florida democrat legislator’s son arrested for smuggling illegal aliens a few days ago. Hardly any reporting on it.

http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/state/article814344.ece

Again, where the reportinng on Ayers, Dorhn, Annenberg Challenge, Rezko, Johnson, Soros, etc? Yet they leave no leaf unturned in Wasilla, AK.

Journalists have become a patheticly dishonest breed. Thank God there are a couple exceptions to the rule.

And we a lot need a housecleaning of these congressmen and senators that the media protect through under reporting - like Jefferson in LA for starters. Barney frank deserves a closer look, too. But I fully expect them to be accomplices in the growing corruption we see in gevernment - after all, anything for Socialist Cause, anthying to weaken and undermine America and its values. Despicable.

Sep 19, 2008 - 3:47 am 19. Buckeye2:

Let’s see, the Democrats and the MSM were so worried about Bush tapping terrorist phone calls, that many of them thought it was an impeachable offense.

Now we have a Democrat politician’s son hacking and publishing the emails of the Gov. of Alaska’s personal email account. And what is the media worried about? Whether or not Palin sent one or two emails that might have vaguely alluded to government business. If anyone needs more evidence as to how unserious the MSM and Dems are, here is exhibit # 1.

I predict you will be unable to name anyone who defends this kid. Why do conservatives think liberals are as disingenuous as themselves?

“The kid” is a 20 year old MAN, legally an adult, old enough to vote and buy cigarettes and join the military. Soon, he’ll be able to buy beer.

Oh, sure he’s a politician’s kid and what a politician’s kid does shouldn’t be put on the parents, but here you are, going out of your way to point out that this guy is the son of a Democrat.

You’re going through awful lengths to make false equivalencies, Richard, and doing it as nakedly partisan as possible.

Gee isn’t this dork’s lefty Dad one of those who went into conniptions over the whole Bush Administration surveillance- issue?? Guess it’s OK for Democrats to do. Just another example of their hypocrisy.

It will be interesting to hear and see the Democratic politician’s comments on this clear ILLEGAL violation of Sarah Palin’s privacy. No doubt that “kid” David Kernell will be made into the victim — it’s the Democrat’s MO. But wait a minute! - this fellow is 20 years old - certainly no longer a kid - but you can be sure his apologists will use that description repeatedly to minimize his actions. Also, expect to find “popcorn” to have more ties into Obama’s inner circle.

I also understand that Obama is using negative campaign ads in a ratio of 77 to McCain’s 56 — yet who does all the whining, finger pointing and continuously portrays himself the victim of negative ads? - Why Obama.

Four years of “change” under an Obama presidency?? Make that four years of the culture of victimzation.

RE - There was a Florida democrat legislator’s son arrested for smuggling illegal aliens a few days ago. Hardly any reporting on it.

It’s not like the Republicans have their hands clean either. Cuban-American Republicans defied immigration law by the thousands with full support of local leadership to launch the Mariel boatlift. And it is Republicans that passed laws magically transmuting a Cuban illegal into a legal immigrant if he manages to get a foot on dry US soil.

Agree. The “poor, wayward child” defense of this 20-year old won’t fly far. Not when it is pointed out that over half the US guys in Afghanistan or Iraq or serving in the AF, Coast Guard, our Naval Fleet are his age or less.

Add in the tens of millions of Americans that are victims of identity theft, Internet stalking, immature assholes infecting American computers with viruses - that hardly think of “hackers” as a public good.

=================
As for his Dad, Mike Kernell, a big Obama backer in Memphis? I think he will be be as welcome as a public pusher of the annointed One as Mike Nifong was in N Carolina. The disgraced DA showed up in July at an Obama “get out the vote” rally festooned in Obama “flash” gear and asked how he could help Barack.

Crosses were waved, garlic necklaces donned - “Go away, Mike Nifong! Just…Go Away!”

Another embarassingly stupid American who believes that Federal immigration laws can be willfully flouted. As long as the illegal is a blind Mullah “persecuted for his religious beliefs” or an economic refugee of the 4 billion out there seeking a better situation for themselves as they flee from Communist/cruel dictator/secular Islam nation “oppression”.

The Cuban-American dickheads were no different than the bozos also violating Federal law declaring “Sanctuary Cities” for illegals fleeing “repressive Latin American gov’ts”.

Yeah, billions say their country sucks, therefore they deserve to be Americans - instead of working to better their own nation. And certain dumb Americans think some poem about “wretched refuse” morally compells us to take in people that stood around and did nothing as communists or Islamic terrorists took over their country.

Face it, if Poland was near our Border, we would have 20 million “noble Polish refugees” and Poland still would have been Communist - because who would have taken any risk and fought for their freedom and Poland’s when they could have just run to America and screamed:

“Dryfoot! Dryfoot! I am all-USA hero refugee now! Now give me you great, generous benefits and sponsor reuniting by family and 30 relatives here! Oh, you Americans are so generous and wonderful. Oh, and you should also fight and die to liberate my beloved country…”

Sep 19, 2008 - 9:09 am 53. Peggy McGilligan:

The attack on Governor Sarah Palin’s privacy is inexcusable. Americans have constitutional guarantees, among them the right to be secure in their papers. In a hastily worded statement the Associated Press informed the Secret Service, “No way dude, are we givin’ up them emails. Ask anybody; she got hacked fair & square. Like get your own story man, this one’s ours.” Due to the nature of the electronic medium, the Palin case should be groundbreaking.

Mr. cell phone is not your friend: whenever one’s cell phone is switched on, just turned on, even if it’s not a GPS enabled device, it emits a signal that anyone who obtains your SIM card number may track with an array of inexpensive software. Cedarford is right on this one. I sympathize with all the people of the world and their rotten regimes, but that does not compel the US to adopt a purely sentimental immigration policy that is arbitrarily enforced. Once the law becomes something filled with exceptions, the exceptions begin to define the law into meaninglessness.

As for this crybaby hacker, the way to make these smarmy computer nerds wake up and smell reality is to give them a hard fine and hard time. Breaking into someones personal property is no different than breaking into my house, rooting around, and then publishing the documents they discover in the process of committing a crime. Mrs. Palin should also sue anyone who went and published her personal email as well.

This kid was an adult and (presuming) did this from his own home/apartment/wherever. Palin’s kid got knocked upon on HER watch. And if the reports about Bristol being out of school for months on end…seems like she got knocked up while out of school, at home, suffering from mono.

Breaking into an email account is a crime, generally not prosecuted, normally brought into complaints in civil proceedings to introduce or discount evidence, etc.

However, since goober stated–to the AP!–that his intent was to bring down Palin, he was trying to interfere in a presidential election in a manner not legally protected. He could easily be prosecuted for attempted election fraud, or some variation thereof. The biggest problem: he admitted it! He can get in bigger trouble for those few sentences than the actual violation of Palin’s privacy and the distribution of her private emails to the AP.

The Obama campaign isn’t trying to intimidate folks with violence, per se. They sure aren’t shy about throwing nosy ABC reporters into jail, however.

While are short of physical violence directly against a person (except for the concrete bag drops), they still are dishonorable acts of intimidation. Physical violence against a person is the next logiocal step in this escalation, especially after Obama’s call for to ‘get in their face’.

Sep 19, 2008 - 11:50 am 72. Rubicon:

All should be aware that Mussolini & Hitler blurred the line between National Socialist & Fascist. By the time the world was at war with their oppressive regimes, the two morally bankrupt movements were one in the same & each was as despicable as the other.
Based on his comments on his Facebook page, “Popcorn” Kernell is obviously a rabid leftist. And, in America, that is his right.
What is not his right is to hack into computer systems & circumvent security features to steal private email account information. In addition, posting that private info to the internet represents a serious breach of privacy.
Whether the account was a public Yahoo account or a private email service account from another provider, hacking into the account & releasing info regarding its contents, does represent a criminal act. Whether according to law this represents a serious crime will depend on how the criminal codes are written & interpreted by a District Attorney & a judge. Whether this is treated as a state issue or a federal issue is also up to the various prosecutors with jurisdiction over these types of crimes in that particular region of the country.
I doubt the kid is an official part of the Obama campaign. He may be out there drumming up votes for Obama & he may also be out there knocking McCain & Palin at every opportunity (evidenced by his gutter talk about Palin on his Facebook page), but that does not mean he is an official member of the Obama campaign.
We know his father is a leftist by his voting record & his political activities. We know his father educated his son at home in the ways of the world according to Dad’s perspectives. This means the kid thinks as Dad does when it comes to politics & obviously has learned some serious dirty tricks style functioning, since hacking into the email account & subsequently releasing the emails contents to the internet, represents dirty tricks style political activity.
Lets face it, Tricky Dick (Nixon) & his cohorts led the way on this issue. They established the standards on the subject.
Nixon should have let the law take its course rather than trying to protect & cover for his over zealous flunkies. But, that is history & is done.
I do doubt the media will make any serious effort to determine if the kid really is connected to the Obama campaign in any significant &/or official or semi official capacity. That’s a real shame since we all know the media would let no stone unturned if this involved a Republican & his kid.
tried to look at the Terry Frank link, but ran into a “bandwidth exceeded” notice. Obviously, a whole lot of people want to see & learn more about Popcorn K.
For me, there are obvious questions to be asked of Popcorn’s, motivations, intentions, & what results he hoped to achieve.
“Why would someone who is obviously computer literate enough to work the angles & hack into an email account, be dumb enough to post what they have stolen, on the internet?”
“Did Popcorn simply overlook what negative affects his actions could have for his father, the Obama campaign, Democrats, the leftist movement to socialize America, etc?”
“Did Popcorn actually believe or not understand that once he posted his ill-gotten info to the internet, his identity was going to be discovered sooner or later?”
“Is the Obama campaign going to take or expound on an official position on this activity & on any criminal activity like this, since whether directly or indirectly, the Obama campaign is connected & obviously many will surmise their is a connection?”
(If Obama fails to disavow this activity, condemn it &/or any that has taken place, is taking place, or may take place in the future, then many will draw the conclusion that Obama is simply hoping the issue will go away. The media will help in that regard since they will surely do little to follow up unless there are legs on this as yet unknown, while concurrently mocking anyone who asks any questions about this event.)
Popcorn needs to be prosecuted. Popcorn’s Dad needs to condemn what his son did. And all need to make sure to watch closely for any activities of a similar nature, just in case this actually is an operational strategy of a supportive leftist organization, is a strategy of the official Obama campaign (which seems unbelievable), or is an activity of the Democratic National Campaign (DNC), which in my opinion is equally unbelievable.

Do you consider the threat of rape to be violent?

Isn’t this the kind of thing the Blackshirts did to help Mussolini?

The lawyers will argue that she didn’t really mean it, it was a joke. Really?

Look into your heart, how can you support this kind of mean-spirited behavior?

This doesn’t make Obama look good to the independent voters who are trying to decide which candidate to vote for.

Being someone in both Information/Network/Computer Security and someone who frequents 4Chan and occasionally has had dealings on the black hat side of things (not any more, I’ve been a good white hat hacker for over a decade)… I can tell ya the following:

1) Sarah Palin’s email account wasn’t “illegally hacked”, according to the law. See, Yahoo doesn’t guarantee privacy, nor does it have any sort of sophisticated security which must be broken. The perp simply answered the ‘password reset’ questions correctly.

2) This was not a campaign supported attack. It’s pure Anonymous style and the event, if it had been an attempt by the Obama campaign, would have been kept quiet, the password would have been changed, the whole inbox downloaded and then, IF something was found, they would have published it. SoP, the most basic tenant of hacking (if you’re doing something specific) “KYFMS!” (Keep Your ……. Mouth Shut). The public bragging that went with this was typical hacker ‘counting coo’.

In theory, it could be a vast left wing conspiracy. But, Occam says it’s more likely a 20 year old kid with some hacking cred, a connection to Anon resources and a desire to pull off something worth bragging about.

However, it does say a lot about our political climate, and possibly this kids indoctrination, when a citizen of this country is ‘assumed’ to have evil secrets simply because of their political affiliation… on 4Chan, the person claimed that they were disappointed in the lack of incriminating evidence that they assumed would be there… and I imagine that some 20 year old GOP kids would feel the same way about their fellow citizens that happen to be blue rather than red. What a great future these partisan jerk offs have made for the rest of us. I would thank these anti-American GOPers and Democrats, but I’m sure that somewhere, deep down, they know who and what they are.

As for politically motivated incidents of property destruction, assault or trespass — if it is a “small isolated incident”, you would be correct; it’s an outlier. From what I can tell by the comments on this article and in other forums, this kind of behavior is now routine.

Let’s be honest. Jew-Girl would not have had her audience at the DC Jewish Community Center if she had proposed instead that white meth-heads under her (implied) command target and rape Michelle Obama.

She would have been an instant outcast amongst Jews. Not ever given another gig.

But the Jews assembled, instead, roared in laughter.

Why?

Because Bernhard successfully portrayed Palin, in Jewish eyes, as a white Christianist deserving to be raped.

Now you got Uncle Women, like Sarah Palin, who jumps on the s–t and points her fingers at other women. Turncoat b—h! Don’t you f–kin’ reference Old Testament, bitch! You stay with your new Goyish crappy shiksa funky bulls–t! Don’t you touch my Old Testament, you b—h! Because we have left it open for interpre-ta-tion! It is no longer taken literally! You whore in your f–kin’ cheap New Vision cheap-ass plastic glasses and your [sneering voice] hair up. A Tina Fey-Megan Mullally brokedown bulls–t moment.

Well, this stinking Jew deserves to have her ugly face rifle-butted if she ever tried to go past “comedic excess” to an actual attack by what she thinks are her “loyal black animal Niggahs” on the VP nominee.

Then billed 50,000 for beneficial plastic surgery by security people who can say pounding her face to paste improved Sandrah’s looks.

The slimey Jew-Boy in charge of the DC Jewish Community Center, Israeli-born Avi Roth, said this defending her “niggahs will gang-rape her if I say so, schtick”:

We’re proud of our producing — proud of Sandra’s sense of timing — taking the fight out to the house and to the street beyond, channeling so much of our rage and frustration at the bizarre recent twists of fortune since Karl Rove trotted out Sarah Palin for John McCain to briefly meet and then get in bed with.Sandra’s face is hanging 10 feet tall in a banner over the DCJCC steps and we’re proud that she’s a new emblem and ambassador for our theater and our center. She’s not the only one who represents us. But her large heart, her generous talent, and her big mouth are all a big part of who we are.

The same Jew-boy would be calling for apologies, groveling, and lifetime blacklisting if a non-Jew comic ever assailed
minorities or Jews with gang-rape threats as a joke.

Jews are generally incredibly smart, cunning, gifted individuals who sometimes are the world’s finest talent - but always get in trouble in creating real friction when when as groups and cabals - they do incredibly dangerous or bigoted stuff.

The spiel is that Jews have been tossed or made very unwelcome, eventually tossed or killed in 52 of 58 cultures they have been in - “because of the irrational psychological disorder of anti-Semitism”. While Jews are pure as lilies.

Well, is America next up because we cannot abide a “wildly popular amongst Jewish Community Center members comedian who wishes to convey images of (1)inferior black animals at her beck and call (2)raping and subjugating any white Christian woman who dispeases her?

I’m beginning to understand why cultures that embraced diversity, like ancient Greece, Rome, the Ptolemys, the Caliphate, the Moors, Spain, the Brits, modern 20th Century France, Germany, Russia and the whole Ummah - finally sought to remove Jewish influence.
That when Jews wanted a homeland, the feeling was, OK, but nowhere near our people…we fear for their safety, economic exploitation.

Trying to balance Jewish talent and many gifts against Jewish cancers like Bolshevikism, the modern ACLU, and the Sandra Bernhards. Should they stay or should they go?

Sometimes, it appears that what Jews alledge is the “psychological infirmity” of 189 of 191 nations prevails. They best be gone. Sacred law and Constitutions erected as legal shields nonwithstanding….

Just a few days after McCain picked Palin for his VP, LL radio commentator, Ed Schultz, proudly announced on his talk show that he was going up to Alaska with his group of LL thugs to go dig up dirt on Palin. These people are desperate, and they’ll stoop to any level to destroy those they fear most. They know Palin’s not just a pretty face. She’s smart, she’ll make meaningful changes that will help everyday Americans and will earn America’s trust and confidence. Somewhere down the line, she will go against Hillary for the Presidency, and that’s what the liberal establishment fears the most. That’s why they want to bring her down now. Always the unpredictable chess player with an independent streak, McClain is a genius because he created the future of the Republican Party — middle class, smart, strong-willed working women. What a visionary. Obama, with hubris in hand, couldn’t stomach having Hillary as his VP, so now it’s coming back to haunt him and his gang of LLs.

Your type’s “greatest generation” lingering vibe is part of why modern western conservatives are stimied in ‘cross purposes’ clay.’

Everything is not fascists vs ‘freedom’. (This in spite of what nice p47* propaganda footage would have you believe. [*WWII allied plane])

The ’sides’ (underpinning it all):
‘Liberals’ are generally lactose-intolerant four-eyed types that ‘throw like girls’. They are just angry because of this and feel justified in whatever they do to balance it out. The fascist and NS types –generally healthier in phenotyoe –were expressly specifically against those types ascending.

When liberals ‘win’, it is NOT fascists winning –_regardless of the tactics for victory_ (or your ‘greatest gen.’ opinions of those tactics).

There is most probably no such thing as a world without government control and its stadiums of brainswashed ’symbol’ worshippers.

By not accepting that, conservatives damn themselves to eternal defeat at its hands…

What are the implications for Man?

Ie What are the implications for the endless stream of variations coming from our loins (eg ‘four eyed’ and ‘healthy’) fighting in profound Darwinist nest-pushing-chick battles? (Be these variations old ‘races’ or simply new ever-forming phenotypes?)…

I don’t know.

She has an abhorrent and unreasonable hatred for a woman who has attained a pinnacle that Bernhard wasn’t even considered for. Palin did it her way as a working mom, while clinging to her Religion & Constitutional rights. Palin had the audacity to do so while raising a family with a husband that epitomizes Macho strengths and a motherly/new age man’s, support for his wife and family. Looks good on Palin and extremely bad on Bernhard in this exchange where one woman would want to command the rape of another woman to satify her own lust for power over the rights of the raped woman. Unfortunately the hate mongers in the feminist movement are unable to think that deeply..

Back to the issue at hand. If someone leaves a letter on a table in front of me unopened , I would not read it unless asked to. I do not have the right nor ignorance within me to do so. Searching out the private maters of someone on the internet in the Methodology that the hacker used is wrong and certainly not the methodology that was used by the Pony Express agents that helped to build your nation. They risked their lives to ensure the integrity of the mail system your country built and which contained many secrets to be opened by the person that the letter was addressed to. That is how important privacy was to them and the people that set up the ORIGINAL INTERNET in North America. Sadly some folks just don’t understand such nuances and would be proud to destroy the privacy of others. If this were Jesse Jackons or Hilary Clinton’s account, the heads would have been rolling like corn cobs on the way to a feed lot. The outrage would reach a cresendo that would have paled the lofty noise measurements of Katrina. But it is only a back water Governor from a (so called) right wing party in Alaska. In fact her political actions show more left of center applications then a lot of Democratic Governors have shown. I strongly doubt the ACLU will be picking up on this breach of individual privacy .It is obvious that some folks put support of a party that supposedly supports individual rights & privacy above the individual rights and privacy of a leader in the OTHER PARTY. Especially if they think they can find dirt or insinuate dirt in the exercise.

He reminds me of a character in a book i read…can u all say ANTI-CHRIST..read it and you tell me…if he gets elected we are in serious trouble here folks and i dont mean the economy or taxes and such..im talking he is going to sell us out to the muslims and radicals, who make the Dems look Conservative…we are in big trouble people…BIG TROUBLE..mark my words. He has millions of people awestruck, no matter how bad he is and things he does they are blinded. Just like the Anti-Christ who comes out of nowhere with no experience and just takes over for no apparent reason..WE NEED TO GET THIS OUT TO THE MASSES…and btw..i am not a holier than thou Christian. Just a regular person like most, but this man is just not right…something is very wrong here. How else can someone like him be involved with so many wrong radicals, who can for infantcide, who can pray the prayers of Islam, who has a wife who isnt even proud of America, etc. and people still follow him…use your own judgement on this. You dont have to be a big time Christian to figure this out…GOD BLESS US ALL…WE WILL NEED IT

Palin’s and McCain’s sons are in the military serving their country in a time of war. This 20 year old jerk & son of a liberal Democrat state legislator is hacking into people’s private email accounts with impunity and today continues to play with his computer and whatever else in the privacy and misery of his room. No outrage whatsoever from the Obama camp for what this loser hacker has done, but Obama’s silence is loud and clear. It shows he’s a phoney and a hypocrite (we have to protect the privacy of all Americans) and, just like this 20 year old loser, unrepentent and in bed with the corrupt mainstream media.

I agree with above post that McCain’s numbers are being underreported. Every time I go on AOL , McCain has 60-65% of the vote EVEN IN ILLINOIS and is leading in practically every state.
We have to individually not spend more than we earn and let this philosophy trickle up to the economic illiterates in Washington.
How long would you keep your job if you had a 9% approval rating? Throw the bums out and get people who know what they are doing.
I’d take the first 535 names out of any phone book over what we have in Washington.

You seem to see “leftards” everywhere. But since her addresses were gov.sarah etc., specifically referencing her position as Governor in the email address itself, and were publicly disseminated, it simply does not pass the sniff test to state that she was not conducting state business using them. If the shoe were on the other foot and a leading Democrat had been doing the same thing and was similarly hacked into, I’m sure you would be attacking them for stupidity and carelessness. Turnabout is fair play. Deal with it.

TO CHUCK(LE):

Progmeister has not been banned, at least by me.

In fact, I have never banned anyone. I believe in a free speech environment, even including the people who attack me virulently. Thinking people know how to weigh the merits of the flamers’ and the trolls’ contributions.

Pajamas Media itself sometimes bans people for reasons that are beyond my comprehension or control. And PJM does not consult me, if or when they do ban someone.

I am reliably informed by PJM that Progmeister has not been banned.

All that said, I have some general advice for commenters: avoid name calling (”leftards” and so on), assume good will on the part of the other guy, and try to persuade with evidence and exposition. In that fashion, you would benefit the other readers more and by that much more influential. Try it.

I won’t make you do it, but you will be happier when you do.

Sep 20, 2008 - 1:32 pm 122. Mike Shuster:

sure, this kid should be prosecuted, but isn’t anyone concerned about a VP candidate who’s making a big deal on the stump about she’s all for transparency, apparently openly flaunting the law by deliberately using her personal email to discuss hiring decisions? As reported in the NY Post:

On Feb. 7, Frank Bailey, a high-level aide, wrote to Ms. Palin’s state e-mail address to discuss appointments. Another aide fired back: “Frank, this is not the governor’s personal account.”

Mr. Bailey responded: “Whoops~!”

Sep 20, 2008 - 4:32 pm 123. fred:

The law has been broken and the alleged perpetrator is 20 years old. He is an adult and should be held liable for his own actions. His dad may be a Democratic party bigwig in Tennessee with connections to the Obama campaign. There may indeed be a wink and a nod (and I think there is), but all that is immaterial at this point. The kid broke the law and he should face the music for his actions. No double standards, because if his dad or the Obama people pull strings to get him off it will only make people more cynical and disrespectful of the law.

I do find it rich that the Left says nothing about this crime, but will go to the wall to protect the rights of jihad terrorists to talk to each other over the phone lines. Pathetic.

Nice straw man, Fred. I’d explain the difference between “allowing jihad terrorists to talk on the phone” and “protecting the rights of citizens from warrantless wiretaps,” but something tells me you just wouldn’t get it.

I bet you tell people you’re a conservative, don’t you? If you are, why are you okay with a government with unlimited powers to tap your phone? If you trust the government to only listen to terrorists, you might be more of a leftist than you think….

Sep 21, 2008 - 6:05 pm 128. geokstr:

If I recall correctly, the “warrantless wiretaps” were not just monitoring random calls between American citizens, or even when an American citizen in this country intiated a call to a known terrorist outside the country. Rather, they were listening in whenever a known terrorist outside the country made a call to someone in the US. Even this was to much for the so-called civil libertarians. They were even against listening in on any conversation to or from known terrorists, even if BOTH parties were outside the US, if they went through phone servers in the US, even though a high % of such calls go through the US because we have the best phone system in the world.

I personally don’t have any problem with them listening in on calls in those limited circumstances, which in my understanding was all they were doing.

We have no responsibility to give non-citizens of the US all the rights we have under our Constitution, particularly those who make no secret of their desire to destroy us. I guess that means I’d rather be a citizen of the US than a citizen of the world.

I’m not sure many on the left would share that sentiment.

Sep 21, 2008 - 9:15 pm 129. geokstr:

Mr. Minter:

You say we should “…assume good will on the part of the other guy, and try to persuade with evidence and exposition…”.

It is pretty obvious that you don’t follow too many threads concerning politics, where you read all the comments. If you did, you would understand that there are approximately 0% of the posters on the left who comment on conservative, moderate or independent boards who are open to being “persuaded” about anything. Their function is to disrupt, to smear, and to slander, not converse or debate. I remain unconvinced that none of this is centrally organized at some level, somewhere. It’s just too standardized.

Let anything remotely negative about Obama, or positive about Palin/McCain show up on the internet, and within the first few comments, the invasion of these trolls is inevitable.

I see exactly the same comments posted all over these boards, often word for word, other times modified a bit to make them seem original. Many of the posters are drive-bys, using obviously copy/pasted talking points from the Daily Kos, HuffPo, Fightthesmears.com, the Democratic Underground, and others. The talking points they use are often even ones that have already been thoroughly debunked or disproven.

Several posters on this thread have made reference to supposed government business related emails on Palin’s personal email account, and how this means she is a liar, a crook, and must be hiding something. This even though the kid who broke into them stated explicitly that he was trying to damage Palin, but after reading all the emails, found exactly NOTHING.

It makes no difference to them. The left understands the utility of the Big Lie, the favorite tool of Marxism. Smear someone as loudly and as often as you can with innuendo, rumors, halftruths, distortions and outright lies, and eventually the cumulatave weight of the negativity will have the desired subconcious effects.

Take the very public and media-hyped comments of the political genuis Matt Damon and the columns of the NYT Mo Dowd. Both quoted as fact that Palin believes that dinosaurs were around 4,000 years ago, even though the source of this was a blogger who freely admitted that he had simply made up outrageous fake quotes from Palin as a HOAX. He didn’t own up to it days later or on another page either, where it would be difficult to know it was a hoax, but he actually introduced the quotes by saying he had made them up on the same page:
http://unbearablebobness.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/08/governor-sarah-palin-quotes.html

These “quotes” are still flying all over the internet on leftists sites, where they are picked up and used over and over and over again on sites like this. Go to any thread discussing Palin or Obama on this site and you’ll see similar things. What exactly is the reason that we should not treat this type of activity with outright disdain? Out of civility?

Personally, I’m fed up with it. Eventually we need to fight back with the ridicule these people deserve. If I had access to the IP and email addresses I’d love to do an analyis to see if there is any pattern to these trolls that can be traced to a formal democratic source.

What is really important to remember is that adults teach kids their beliefs. He is probably just mouthing the prejudices and hatreds of his father. See how the father likes it then.

RE: “official business” on Yahoo — that is something that Associated Press either made up deliberately, or fell into the trap of assuming that because the address is “gov.palin”, it was being used for official business. That is not true, and the evidence is what the hacker said himself. Remember, he said he found nothing he could use to attack her campaign with, and nothing more than “clerical” correspondence. And, as he also said himself, he was looking as hard as he could for dirt!

You can have pretty much any name you want on a Yahoo mail account. That doesn’t make it “official”.

Sep 22, 2008 - 10:29 pm 135. Mary in LA:

Bristol Palin getting pregnant at 17 — disappointing, but not a crime. She is still a minor, but the age of consent in Alaska is 16, so no statutory rape occurred.

David Kernell getting into someone else’s e-mail without authorization at 20 — a crime. Try him as an adult, because he is one.

In neither case should we assume that the parents are not fit to do their jobs because of the actions of their children. If Mike Kernell is found to be complicit in his son’s criminal actions, though, that is a different matter.

Let me know how you feel some day if a President Obama and his Congress reverse course and allow plots to come to fruition. Hope you have the courage to say that to the families of the victims, you turd.

Name the violations of the innocent caused by the Patriot Act. Know anyone who the NSA snooped on? Bet you can’t name one. People like you have absolutely no clue as the kind of world we live in. I can say in all honesty I’ve observed the exact same thing, but with the sides reversed. As an outsider I can say it’s truly amazing how the republican and democrats supporters mirror each other in so many respects. You just can’t see it from your opponent’s perspective, nor they from yours.

Both sides have trolls, idiots, and criminal activists. Try to stick to the issues if you can. Until someone produces some actual evidence that this guy’s behaviour was in any way condoned by the democratic party, it has no bearing whatsoever on the election. Except perhaps for what the use of a Yahoo account says about Palin’s judgement, but that’s really a separate topic.
