OK, so 200 Marines stationed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, piled on to five buses and came to Toledo, Ohio, yesterday to practice some urban patrol exercises. The Toledo police knew about the request for the three-day exercise well in advance, but somehow Mayor Carty Finkbeiner didn’t see the memo requesting permission for the event. So when when the first bus arrives at 3:20 p.m. and Staff Sergeant Andre Davis steps off, he is greeted by a city employee and told that the mayor wanted him and his soldiers out of town by 6 p.m. “I wish,” Sgt Davis drily remarked, “they would have told us this four hours ago.” [Update: a reader points out that it is incorrect to refer to Marines as "soldiers": soldiers serve in the army, not the Marines. I regret the mistake. I further regret referring to SSgt Davis incorrectly as "Sergeant"!]
Indeed.
I gather that Mayor Finkbeiner (a Democrat, readers will be surprised to learn), like the folks in Berkeley, California, can’t think of the United States Marines without having the first lines of “The Destruction of Sennacherib” float through his head (”The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold . . .”) “The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people,” said Brian Schwartz, the mayor’s spokesman.
Gee, isn’t that a shame?
Lance Corporal Brandon Bukrey-McCarty recalled how useful such training was when he had been deployed in Fallujah in 2006-2007. The training, he said, “got me used to looking up on rooftops, looking around every alley, every open door.”
Too bad, Brandon! Carty Finkbeiner thinks having U.S. soldiers in town will frighten the voters, so your comrades will just have to do without that training.
The company’s commanding officer, Major Jeffrey O’Neill, was disappointed by Carty Finkbeiner’s cold shoulder–it would, he noted, be difficult to find a suitable alternative venue for the exercise–but “we’re Marines,” he said, “We’ll adapt and overcome.”
I have no doubt about that. I hope part of the adaptation will be to present the City of Toledo–or maybe Carty Finkbeiner himself–with the $10,000 tab that the aborted exercise cost the Marines.
Mayor Finkbeiner can boast on his official website that Tony Packos Restaurant in Toledo was “made famous on the television show M*A*S*H.” But when he has an opportunity to help the men and women who in real life protect this country, including the City of Toledo, he refuses to grant them the sort of permit he would routinely give to a bunch of anti-American activists who wanted to organize a protest march down Main Street. I think it’s disgusting. If I lived in Toledo, I’d be wondering when Carty Finkbeiner was up for re-election and would look forward to sending him out on a 6:00 p.m. bus at the earliest opportunity.
Hat tip for this item to Instapundit.
[Update: A resourceful reader suggests writing Mayor Finkbeiner to express your appreciation for his superb leadership. Good idea. Here's the address: mayor.toledo@toledo.oh.gov]

1. lawrence p. herrera:Berkeley, I expect. I lived and worked in Ohio. Toledo, I’m shocked. And once again, if there were a tornado, or a huge winter storm, destruction and martial law, they would all be screaming for help from the marines. Where are the marines, the national guard? Not to mention a terrorist attack. I hear it all now. Hypocrites.
Feb 9, 2008 - 7:43 am 2. RB:Wake up Toledo. Thanks Roger.
Thanks for the info. Very sad to Marines treated this way.
BTW, be careful about calling them soldiers, as you do in your blog entry. Soldiers serve in the Army, as Marines will explain to you–professionally, as is the Marine way.
Feb 9, 2008 - 7:50 am 3. Mike Johnson:One hopes the residents of Toledo remember the traiterous actions of Mayor Finbeiner at the next election. The Mayor was granted the privilege of representing the people of Toledo but somehow I doubt this does it.
Feb 9, 2008 - 7:54 am 4. David Thomson:Mayor Carty Finkbeiner does not dress like a hippie from the 1960s. He appears to be very mainstream and even somewhat conservative. This is another example of the Democratic Party’s evolving infatuation with dishonest pacifism. It is still on a vacation from history and cannot be trusted with the safety of America’s citizens. Toledo used to be considered to be something of a blue collar union town. The era of George Meany and Lane Kirkland is obviously long gone.
Feb 9, 2008 - 7:58 am 5. john W.:I emailed my comments directly to the mayor. I will never visit Toledo, or buy anything made there.

Aren’t there some congressional earmarks for Toledo that can be removed?
Feb 9, 2008 - 8:22 am 7. Jack Ward:You will notice that all these political pukes that hate the military are – Democrats
Feb 9, 2008 - 8:35 am 8. Michael McBride:Thank you for this post. I am fortunate to live in an area of Ohio with (for the most part) more common sense. I sent an e-mail to the mayor expressing my “appreciation” but with full knowledge that it is likely to see the delete button before it’s read. I believe this mayor has been linked with some pretty stupid stunts before, as well. Don’t know what it is with those counties that border the lake…
Feb 9, 2008 - 8:36 am 9. bartelby:I have been to Toledo. It is the perfect place for these types of exercises – it looks like a war zone.
Feb 9, 2008 - 8:38 am 10. syn:Wow will the Democrat war against America ever end?
Feb 9, 2008 - 8:53 am 11. R. W. Thursby:“The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people.”
No American is “frightened” of the US Marines.
Terrorists are frightened by the Marines, just as our enemies through the years have been.
That leaves only one conclusion to be drawn about Finkbeiner.
Feb 9, 2008 - 9:19 am 12. KAMEL CETIN:Shame on you, minor Finkbeiner, as a French Christian of Algerian Kabyle ancestry, I’m ashamed of any display of treason or surrender to liberalism. You should be tarred and feathered and forced to spend a Marine Awareness Semester in Parris Island. I despise you and everything you stand for.
Kamel.
Feb 9, 2008 - 9:19 am 13. John Rogers:Typical Obama/Clinton Democrat, “loathe the military.”
Feb 9, 2008 - 10:34 am 14. Donald Maier:I sadly live in Toledo, and am outraged at the mayors actions! These Marines serve our country and our mayor can’t even let them train in our city! This is bullshit! I think we should send carty to Iraq and see how he fares without the proper training!
Semper Fi! OORAH!
Feb 9, 2008 - 11:33 am 15. Gene:I just sent an email-letter to Mayor Finkbeiner informing him and/or his staff that Toledo is added to Berkley as cities my family and I will not support with vacation or other dollars. I called on him to reflect for a short while and then issue a very formal apology to those brave men and women and to all U.S. Marines.
Feb 9, 2008 - 11:45 am 16. maggie:As a resident of Toledo, I can tell you that Toledoans are NOT happy about this … but the mayor has a ‘ready-shoot-aim’ approach to things.
He also has a tendency to downplay negative feedback, so you should copy the local media on any emails you might send to the infamous mayor. (my blog has an address)
Feb 9, 2008 - 11:48 am 17. Hucbald:Ack. My dad was a USAF pilot, and I just hate this kind of stuff. Then again, I’ve been dealing with it since the Viet Nam era when one of my libtard teachers asked me how I felt that my dad was a baby killer.
Of course, when mom found out – not from me, but from a neighbor whose son had told her about it – she tore the teacher and the principal a new one. Hee, hee.
I would think the voters would be reassured by the USMC. I would.
Feb 9, 2008 - 11:48 am 18. Anna:Threaten a boycott against Libbey-Owens glassware, a Toldedo-based company, if they do not oppose the Toledo mayor’s attitude towards our Marines. Particularly if you are a restaurant owner you have some clout here, but ordinary consumers can switch to Anchor Hocking among other glass manufacturers for their domestic needs.
Just a thought. Do think before you act, but this city and its mayor needs to suffer the same humiliation they have inflicted on our military, and hitting them in the pocketbook might get their attention if blasting them in the news hasn’t worked by the end of the day.
Feb 9, 2008 - 12:00 pm 19. Beverly Perlson:I have a suggestion for Mayor “Frankenstein” and people like him, the reckless, thankless bunch in Berkeley, California:
GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! You do not belong in America as you do not appreciate the freedom and safety our brave military Heroes provides you! How dare you deny these freedom fighters access to your city! You people are reckless imbeciles who have no appreciation of the safe society our military provides you.
The City Council in Berkeley and this mayor should get out of our country. How about this: WE DON’T WANT YOU HERE!!!
Feb 9, 2008 - 12:04 pm 20. Tim Kitsos:Hello, Semper Fi! Great John Mccain commercial here. Let the libs continue their self destructive path. Keep it up so us conservatives can continue to block the Obama/Clinto/ Chavez/Ahmedinajad agenda.
God bless America for the the middle east he would have been hanged for this.
Feb 9, 2008 - 12:06 pm 21. noprisoners:No city in America that treats our servicemen/women the way that Berkeley and Toledo have should be eligible for federal government largesse of any kind. Call your Congressman and Senators! Support and broaden the bill currently passing through the Congress!
Feb 9, 2008 - 12:12 pm 22. Sean:I wonder if you polled all 100 people in Toledo how many would say they were frightened? I lived near Toledo and can say with confidence they appreciate the Marines more than the mayor.
Feb 9, 2008 - 12:59 pm 23. Mike:Your actions in regards to denying the Marines access to train in Toledo are disgusting. I am personally canceling my hotel reservation for the weekend of the 15th when I had planned to take my children to visit some friends in the Toledo area. It is disappointing that these men and woman who serve our country are denied the ability to train in “your” city. I look forward to donating to the campaign of whoever opposes you in your next election so that this mistake never occurs again.
Feb 9, 2008 - 1:06 pm 24. J. flaherty:“Carty Finkbeiner?” Seriously?
Feb 9, 2008 - 1:25 pm 25. Tom:What a jerk. But then his name is CARTY FINKbeiner, which probably got him beaten up a lot in school.
Feb 9, 2008 - 1:43 pm 26. James Albert DeLater:Mr Kimball:
Thanks for posting this evidence of Mayor Finkbeiner’s indefensible foolishness. This VFW life member (Post 1224, Hamburg, MI) in turn just posted his respectful censure of the mayor’s decision to his office.
Thanks also from this retired college professor for continuing your witty exposures of academic leftist follies and the blight of feminist, ethnic, and pop culture “studies” at university.
Feb 9, 2008 - 1:49 pm 27. Tex Lovera:Folks, this is unfortunately typical of our local government. Toledo is a Democrat/union town. Carty is a blowhard self-styled “cheerleader”. As he bullies those who don’t share his “vision” out of Toledo, it becomes even more of an echo chamber.
Remember, this is the guy who wnated to move deaf people out near the airport. This is the guy who wanted to put “ToledOH!” up on billboards across the City (Homer Simpson, anyone?). His “arts” initiative was to have local artisits paint scenes that were put up in the windows of VACANT BUILDINGS downtown, so they didn’t look so “vacant”. I wonder what people he thought there were left downtown to be “scared” by the Marines??
The laughable part of this is that a few years ago, the City and County were begging the Feds not to move the Ohio Air National Guard base out of Toledo Express Airport!
Pray for us….
Feb 9, 2008 - 1:58 pm 28. Cato:The problem is deeper than you think. Local governments are increasingly controlled by public employee unions, who make sure to get out the vote for every minor election that most people don’t pay attention to. The tacit agreement between Democrats and the public employee unions is, you give us your vote and we will ratchet up your salaries, benefits, job security, etc. The coalition on the left is fast becoming a stranglehold on our nation.
Feb 9, 2008 - 1:58 pm 29. bloggingzoom.com:Carty Finkbeiner to Marines Drop dead
Carty Finkbeiner is an American Democratic politician who is the current mayor of Toledo, Ohio. Carty Finkbeiner first elected in 1993, Carty Finkbeiner took office on January 1, 1994. In 1997, Carty Finkbeiner defeated challenger Nick Wichowski to win…
Feb 9, 2008 - 2:01 pm 30. Freddy Hill:Isn’t it about time that we all petition our local authorities to proclaim that our cities are military-friendly? That we welcome our troops at all times and not when disaster strikes? That the citizens of our towns will cheer our troops when they march in our parades, that we’ll shake their recluiters’s hands, that we’ll buy a drink to any guy or gal that walks in uniform into one of our drinking establishments, that we’ll facilitate their training so that they can be a just a bit safer when they face danger for us?
It is not just Berkeley and and Toledo. There are elected idiots all over this great country that need to hear from their constituents. It is no longer sufficient to claim to be for the troops, we want actions!
Feb 9, 2008 - 2:21 pm 31. Mario:Mayor Fink probably makes the M.A.S.H reference so proudly because M.A.S.H was an anti-war movie and series. These liberal morons cannot understand that they would not have the freedom to think and act so foolishly if it weren’t for the United States Marine Corps, the Untied States Army, the United States Air Force, the United States Navy, the United Stated Coast Guard, and civilians like Mike Benge and many others who put it on the line when duty, honor, and country called. Mayor Fink needs to get a grip and stop drinking the leftist Kool-Aid. He is suffering from the mental disorder of liberalism. He should leave this great country and go where he cannot suck the Liberty that others sacrificed so much to give him and his ilk. He is a Liberty Sucker, nothing more, a leech. Get rid of him.
Feb 9, 2008 - 2:23 pm 32. The Freakin' MAAAAN:Just in case anyone would like to let Mr. Rat Fink know what they think about his running marines out of town… here’s his Home Address and Telephone number:

Feb 9, 2008 - 2:25 pm 33. David Thomson:I’ve learned a little bit more about Carty Finkbeiner. He most certainly does not come across as a Daily Kos type of individual. Politically, the man is all over the map. At times, he seems like a reasonable guy—and occasionally even runs as a Republican candidate. Finkbeiner merely reflects the growing anti-military mindset of the “elites.” These childishly naïve individuals believe that if they are not interested in war—then war will not be interested in them. Needless to add, they are historical illiterates.
Feb 9, 2008 - 4:17 pm 34. Ralph DuMont:I have lived in the Toledo area (fortunately north of the border) for 30 years and, to paraphrase Will Rogers, “Carty Finkbeiner was born stupid and he’s been losing ground ever since.”
Naturally I have emailed my opinion to him as well, and my family will not spend a penny in Toledo until this fool apologizes on his knees, or the people of Toledo get a whole lot smarter and remove him from office.
I am not holding my breath.
Feb 9, 2008 - 4:53 pm 35. Dan Tana:I hate to mention the obvious, but ya notice it’s the decades old Democratically controlled cities that have the worst problems?
I hope Rat Fink isn’t Jewish, but wouldn’t be surprised being that the members of my tribe are the most pathetic liberals.

please excuse the spelling of a child of the sixties. with no spell check.
My email to the mayor:
Sadly sir, we have people like you serving in public office. We’ve come a long way since Patrick Henry, a patriot willing to fight for the freedom of his country, to now when we have people like you willing to let others defend them while making it as difficult as possible to do so. I’m ashamed that my country has produced people like you. I’m encouraging everyone I can to petition their elected officials to remove all presence of the military from your city. They deserve better and you obviously don’t deserve their presence.
Feb 9, 2008 - 5:46 pm 38. Finch:Sincerely,
Willis
I’m one of the Marines the mayor denied access to this weekend and our already tight and over burdened training schedule was thrown for a complete loop, we over came this by going back to remediation of other skills but if we can’t practice our urban combat patrolling, we’re gonna die because we miss something. The very least the mayor could have done was inform us before we got to the city (Its only 4 hours of our limited time each way) so that we could have sought an alternative earlier.
Feb 9, 2008 - 5:58 pm 39. Preston Noell:People are frightened by the Marines??
Give me a break!
Being around Marines makes me feel safe.

Feb 9, 2008 - 6:17 pm 40. Infinite Monkeys:Berkeley (and now Toledo) to Marines: Drop Dead
The city council of Berkeley, Calif., this week passed a resolution telling the Marine Corps that its recruiting station is not welcome in their city. (Roger Kimball notes that the mayor of Toledo, Ohio, has also quaffed the bitter anti-war…
Feb 9, 2008 - 7:01 pm 41. Rhambus:I am a Toledoan, and while I think Carty Finkbeiner is crazy, I actually think he was telling the truth when he said he was worried the Marines would scare people. I don’t believe he actually doesn’t like the Marines. Here’s the thing: he is CRAZY. He probably ACTUALLY BELIEVED having the Marines around would scare people, and additionally was mad because he didn’t know about it ahead of time–he is just that self-absorbed. A normal person would have just dealt with it or at least had the sense that maybe attacking the Marines would be stupid, but remember, he is CRAZY.
Toledo is hopelessly Democrat but trust me, it is no Berkeley. Indeed, the union-type Democrats I am used to from Toledo would probably beat the crap out of Berkeley hippies. Heck, Carty would probably order hippies to get the heck out of downtown as well, and possibly beat them up personally (he is not crazy enough to beat up a Marine, I guarantee that).
On another note about the Democrats, I am amazed that one party can hold such different people – you have to wonder why the working class, white Democrats of Toledo keep voting for a party who on the national level couldn’t give a crap about them and instead engage in the worst kind of racial, ethnic, and various other interest group huxterism. Toledo’s anti-American longtime Congressional representative, Marcy Kaptur, possibly the most useless Congressperson in America, is a great case in point. Show me something she has actually done for Toledoans and I will show you the snipe I just hunted…
Feb 9, 2008 - 7:21 pm 42. Robert S:Last time I was in Toledo the Marines ran exercises in town. I looked out the window and saw a group of armed men running around in camouflage and thought ‘holy sh*t, WTF is going on??!!’ That’s when someone told me it was the Marines and sometimes they do exercises in town. I guess it’s done because it offers a better training environment then their usual set-up.
I gotta tell you, I didn’t like it then and don’t like it now. There’s something troubling about the military swarming an American city, even if it just for training. I can’t quite put my finger on it but it doesn’t feel right at all. Perhaps I’m taking the Posse Comitatus Act too far in the expectation that the military trains on military soil and civilians be civilians on the rest. But it doesn’t take any great imagination to see how something much more nefarious could go on under the guise of ‘training.’ It’s not like the fed doesn’t push every little thing they can as it is…
Please understand, I’ve nothing but support and the greatest respect for the Marines. I hold them in the highest regard for their bravery and for the sacrifices they have taken to protect our country and our freedom and I do realize these drills help them to do their job and save lives. I get it. This isn’t about any malice whatsoever toward my armed forces. This is only about my preference for them to not train in American cities; to get the funding to build adequate training centers on military base and train there.
Feb 9, 2008 - 7:35 pm 43. Ron Frontz:You and a guy named Obama have made me now decided to vote for the Republica ticket. He is running for our president and refuses to wear the American Flag button, refuses to place his hand over his Heart during the playing of the our National Anthem or place his hand over the Bible for his Pledge. He and people like you are the cause of America losing their respect in this world. Shame on you!! Makes me happy I moved out of Ohio.
Feb 9, 2008 - 9:08 pm 44. Doright:There once was a Mayor Finkbeiner,
As it turns out, he was quite a weiner,
When Marines came to town,
Well, he just turned them down,
And henceforth, as a person, was minor

Feb 9, 2008 - 10:42 pm 45. DANEgerus:More preferential treatment for the military wing of the (D)emocrat party, Code Pink, who everyone should know maintains a 24×7, 365 day a year “protest” across the street from Walter Reed military hospital to taunt the wounded’s families.
Hey… guess which political party Toledo’s Mayor Carty Finkbeiner belongs to? You only get one try! If you said (D)efeaticrat, you were right!
Feb 9, 2008 - 10:45 pm 46. WILLIAM:this is offensive to me between bersekley an here i am sick of all these s—-heads an there weak power to try to disgrace the honorable marine corps one day an probably soon they will push to far
Feb 10, 2008 - 5:24 am 47. Albert Russell:The real progress the Democratic Party has made over the last 40 years degrading our national security is truly remarkable. And then along comes the good Mayor of Toledo to do his bit.
You can’t make this stuff up! Please remember this November.
Feb 10, 2008 - 6:36 am 48. deb marsh:As the mother of a young woman in the National Guard my heart goes out to the families of these marines. Shame on the mayor of Toledo for using this forum to express his political views.
Feb 10, 2008 - 10:01 am 49. Mary:HOLY TOLEDO, what will happen to Mayor Finkbeiner? Will he end up being elected in Berkley or will he give some politically correct wimpy apology to get the heat off his assenine liberal agenda?
Feb 10, 2008 - 12:23 pm 50. Crash Chloride:Tune in tommorow – same bat time, same bat channel… Also, find out if Mayor Finkbeiner is really Alfred’s brother (as he looks like him!) – God bless our military – I’m forever indebted to them!!!!!!
It seems people here are more interested in hating democrats than what is really going on. I am a registered democrat who is citizen of Toledo and I am unhappy with my mayor on many issues but not this one.
Not only did the mayor not know about this but niether did most of the citizens. This was the same situation with the last visit and it scared the crap out of almost anyone who was downtown. Gun fire is not common in downtown Toledo and seeing masses of troops running around is certainly shocking if you don’t know what is going on.
So lets all ease up on this issue a bit. We love our troops and most of us would be happy to have them here, just let us know.
_
Feb 10, 2008 - 1:27 pm 51. Sarah A:Robert S is right in the sense that seeing an armed man run through your back yard would be a disturbing moment. Certainly it would give me a moment of pause. But Robert’s wrong in thinking that there is something wrong with using US cities for training. Marines ought to be scary, the same way a cop is scary, even to the law abiding. To misquote C.S. Lewis, Marines aren’t safe, but they are good. Furthermore, we ought to see our Marines (and soldiers) more often, not less, so that we remember how our safety is achieved. It’s their scariness that keeps us not only feeling safe, but actually safe. Compare this for fear – I live in LA, less than ten miles from where there were two gang shootings of innocent people this week. One of the dead was a SWAT cop, and a heroic man by all accounts. When I go to the grocery store, I see gang tags and lurking youths in gang colors. A couple hundred armed Marines would be a welcome sight by contrast. Better them than gangbangers or terrorists any day.
Feb 10, 2008 - 1:31 pm 52. Brian F:Finally, the Marines need these training exercises. If my moment of fear at the sight of an armed Marine is the price for keeping that young man alive in Fallujah, then bring on the fear.
As a retired Marine, I can only shake my head in disbelief regarding the mayor’s actions. It would have given the young warriors a chance at some great training..after all, what better place to learn combat ops than an actual city. One Marine summed it up best..the lessons he learned from previous training helped him in Iraq (gee, maybe helped him survive as well as his fellow Marines???). Mayor, will you remember your actions when the Marine Reservists spend countless hours in their annual Toys For Tots program? Maybe, just maybe, all former service members as well as their familys and friends will remember you come election time.
Feb 10, 2008 - 1:48 pm 53. Carol A. Harrington:As a sister of a Marine , I will never again vote for Carty Finkbeiner …
SEMPER FI !
Feb 10, 2008 - 2:07 pm 54. Sgt Chris:Mr. Kimball,
An added addendum to your Marines vs. army vernacular.
The army refers to all of their “sergeants”, be it Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, 1st Sergeant, etc, as the generic “sergeant” or “sarge” for short. Marines NEVER do this.
If a Marine is a Staff Sergeant, he will always be called by his full rank, as a “Staff Sergeant”. Never just “sergeant” and most definitely, not “sarge”.
Just an FYI, Sir.
Sgt Chris
Feb 10, 2008 - 3:12 pm 55. Sgt Chris:USMC OIF 2005-2006
One more thing, to try to prevent a further correction, the proper Marine Corps abbreviation for Staff Sergeant is SSgt.
Feb 10, 2008 - 3:13 pm 56. Crash Chloride:Brian F :
You missed the point that these troops have already been to Iraq. You also missed the point that we would be happy to have them here as long as we have notice. This is problem between our police and the mayor’s office, this has been a long standing problem. Demonizing the situation is nothing more than far right ploy to smear democrats, thinking people should be above that.
Feb 10, 2008 - 5:53 pm 57. SwampBubbles - News, Politics, Reports:_
Mayor Finkbeiner tells the Marines to leave Toledo – Does not want them to learn the skills to save their lives
Finkbeiner, apparently only speaking for himself, said that Marines are not welcome in Toledo. Well I welcome Marines in Toledo to train and learn skills that will save their lives. Apparently Carty does not think they should practice the skills they need
Feb 10, 2008 - 7:33 pm 58. James:“I’m taking the Posse Comitatus Act” to be forthright you should post the year that act was enabled.
here: a .3 second wait on Google
The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 16, 1878 after the end of Reconstruction. The Act prohibits most members of the federal uniformed services (Army, Air Force, and State National Guard forces when such are called into federal service) from exercising nominally state law enforcement police or peace officer powers that maintain “law and order” on non-federal property (States, their counties and municipal divisions) in the former Confederate states.
The statute generally prohibits federal military personnel and units of the United States National Guard under federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress.
Times have changed since then, not to mention the act was in regard to enforcing the law, not training.

Carty’s a long time joke. But this is also the sad old union town that sends Marcy Kaptur to Congress.
Kaptur last month was grilling Chairman Bernanke and thought she was talking to Treasury Secretary Paulson. TOLED’OH!
Feb 11, 2008 - 7:44 am 60. Tom Brooks:As a life-long resident of Toledo, I hope you (the reader) will understand most Toledoans are not behind the Mayor’s abrupt decision. An incident such as this is typical of micro-management and a shoot from the hip decision making process. You may recall this same Mayor suggesting that people living near the airport who complained of the noise sell their homes to people who are hearing impaired. This guy has embarrassed us many times before and I hope the country does not view the entire population of Toledo as indicative of our Mayor’s actions.
Feb 11, 2008 - 9:29 am 61. D Evans:We are fighting these idiots on a daily basis. With the Winter Soldiers II (John Kerry “baby killers” 1971 Detroit lies) event in DC March 15th. Come take a look at our group of Veterans and Patriots that are trying to counter these leftist.

Unfortunately our Mayor has chosen to start another fire storm. His disrespect to, and convoluted view on, the US Marines training in Toledo is sad. So very sad.
I may be startled by the sight of an armed Marine running up the street, but I am intelligent enough to quickly realize that their presence is not terror related. If there were a real terror threat/attack we would all know it long before you saw a Marine anywhere.
I am so very thankful that we have the many branches of the armed services to keep us safe.
Feb 11, 2008 - 2:24 pm 63. Jim B:Hey Fink! Stick it where the sun don’t shine.
Feb 11, 2008 - 2:31 pm 64. Donna:Thank you for your common sense, Carol. If I saw Marines running down the street with guns, I would think either A. training exercise, or B. bad guys are afoot, in which case I’d be happy to have the Marines there. Since I must have slept through the part in history class detailing the long tragic story of frequent military coups we’ve had in this country and the habit the USMC has of invading and pillaging American cities, the idea that the Marines were the bad guys would not enter my head.
It just occurred to me that maybe Carty is one of the 7 or so people in the nation who actually saw the spate of military-hating movies that came out in the fall and believed them. So maybe he does think the Marines are like the Crips and the Bloods. Or maybe he’s just a jackass.
Feb 11, 2008 - 6:22 pm 65. BigMo Morrell:There appears to be a trend of democraps (er, excuse me, I meant democrats), that disrespect the military. It causes one to wonder what a President Hillary or Obama really feels about the military. I think we know the answer to that. To which I can only say: Semper Fidelis — we will still be there to protect you, oh traitorous mayor!
Feb 12, 2008 - 9:50 am 66. Kimberly:A former Toledo resident, I am happier than ever to now live in MI. And even tho I work “across the line”, I’m blessed to work in Sylvania Township. Nonetheless, I am ashamed and embarressed by the Mayor of Toledo’s actions, AGAIN. Why intelligent people gave that “baboon” another opportunity to act exactly as he does on their dime is beyond me. Reminds me of the old adage, “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. ” Shame on you citizens of Toledo – you’ve received exactly what you asked for.
Feb 12, 2008 - 10:40 am 67. Former SSgt Hudson:Carty: baboons that live in glass cities shouldn’t throw Marines out.
U.S. Citizens, Toledo or elsewhere in the U.S. need not fear the United States Marines.
They should fear airhead politicians such as Finkbeiner.
A U.S. Marine can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
Semper Fi
Feb 12, 2008 - 1:11 pm 68. Brian P.:This so called ‘lack of communication’ is caused by Carty’s arrogant, pompous demeanor in the first place. That’s why nobody wanted to tell him the Marines were coming. When are Toledoans going to wake up? Businesses are leaving town. New ones are not locating here. This town has been run by the same wacked out, liberal, America-hating, unfriendly to business Democrats for decades and what’s it getting us? Carty’s answer to improving Toledo is buying flowers and signs, meanwhile businesses and people are leaving quicker than lightning. Maybe Toledo should vote the Republican ticket next election. It can’t get any worse.
Feb 14, 2008 - 12:28 pm 69. Joel Inman:I grew up in Toledo, Ohio and have hurt for the city because it was, at one time, a great place to live. I used to swell with pride as the Lake Freighters sailed up and down the Maumee River. With the exodus of jobs and the increasing reach of the welfare state, Toledo is not what she once was.
Now Toledo is associated with the despicable Berkeley.
God help us all.
These gutless public officials jump on the bandwagon when in their minds it’s safe.
But ignorance reigns supreme these days. Whatever one’s beliefs are, one is free to act on those beliefs only because Americans have joined their Armed Forces and stood between America and her enemies.
Mr. Finkbeiner, Americans aren’t afraid of the United States Marines. They’re afraid of arrogant, power-hungry, self-aggrandizing politicians like yourself.
May the people of Toledo rise up and throw this arrogant asshat out of office.
