Multiculturalism is a Liberal ‘code’ for the celebration of less White ‘Euro-ethnic’ people in America.
I agree with Roger for the most part. Multiculturalism will always be highly problematic no matter how hard those determined Liberals spin & sell it.
Every person living in America today and living good is basically taking advantage of every institution that white Anglo American Euro-centric people created----no matter how right or wrong.

All the Indo-European Science, Technology and Industry is quickly accepted into non-white cultures all over the world including by our own immigrants. After these institutions become a major part of their culture, many people from these same societies turn around and act as if Euro-Centric White civilization had no part in creating anything.

The double standard is absurd. Add in those rich liberal Multiculturalists who love their life and all the opportunities this country has afforded them... but yet hate America because our history is riddled with 'evil'... and have to fix it or make it right!

Are they preaching Anglo White folks must become a Minority in America to be replaced by the ‘good’ people like Hispanics, Blacks and Asians? It's the path of Liberal Self Righteousness... Laugh--Laugh...vomit....

Celebrate common values and common humanity. Tolerate diversity as long as it is not shoved into your face. If it is, kick its ass!

Brilliant piece. Only morons could object to this well thought out treatise on the historical meaning of being American. But then, we have lots of moron-citizens in America that shouldnt be citizens at all.

Much of the multicultural celebration and advocacy overlooks a fundamental character of most non-Western European cultures - the concept of liberty is absent, and rule of law tends to be weak. Moreover, immigrant communities tend to stress ethnic solidarity which fits well with ethnic power brokering. In Canada, for example, Sikhs are a voting bloc often signed, sealed and delivered to the Liberal Party. Sri Lankans are regularly intimidated by Tamil Tiger reps. Ethnic Chinese navigate in and around the laws with multiple passports. Cultures - not race - are more than colorful clothes and exotic cuisine. They are often directly at odds with American values of liberty and equality. Their corrosive effects will be evident as their numbers increase, and assimilation declines. Maybe American Sharia is the wave of the future.

I work in one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the country. Within a few square miles are Vietnamese, Eritrean, Hmong, Mexican, American blacks, Ethiopian and other communities that I can even think of at the moment. One of my co workers is an Ethiopian immigrant, and a totally amazing person. Not for him the heavily cultivated grievance culture of so many black Americans. When he looks around this country he sees nothing but opportunities on every corner. His brain is on fire with plans, and schemes, and business ideas that he shares with his family, and his church and Ethiopian community that is his cultural base. He is technologically adventurous, and has mastered computer, video, DVD's, copying and selling CD's of Ethiopian and african pop music internationally on EBay, and seeking to parlay his profits into real estate investments. Eventually he will become a citizen. He'll be a damn fine one. One of the best. It's people like him that keep me optimistic about the future of this country.

Arrrgh! "People" are still the greatest asset at my place. I need to prod HR to get with it. Although we do 'celebrate' diversity or, or we say we do. I can't remember having a diversity celebration. Maybe I was out that day.

Steve, I never said 'diversity is freedom', that would be crazy! I said 'more diversity is more freedom' which is completely reasonable. I suppose I should have used 'leads to' instead of 'is' but I was trying to be pithy.

Quit worrying-while everyone in NYC and LA/San Fran are fixated on multiculturism the rest of the country, we "flyover" people, are doing what our fathers, grandfathers et al did---work hard, raise a family, honor this great country. Ever wonder why the military has no trouble filling its ranks even in time of war? It is certainly not because recruiting stations on the Left Coast are busy. But here in flyover country we still enlist just like the last generation.

I also work in an enterprise which attends to diversity, with the following very practical financial incentive: we provide specialized medical services (surgeries, treatments) to a global patient base. We feel that by providing to them as welcoming an environment as possible, we gain a competitive advantage.
Fifty years ago "The Ugly American" was published. It is still in print, and still offers valuable lessons germane to this thread. This is done by contrasting "Talk Radio Patriots" who think that people overseas should all speak English to accomodate them and that the best way to make themselves understood is to speak progressively louder, and those who learn the language and customs of others so that they can SHOW them a better way by example.
