Obama as Tony Soprano, or, flipping America the bird

Naturally, there has been a veritable avalanche of commentary on Obama’s big health care speech the other day. Under doctor’s orders, I gave it a miss, though I later glanced over a transcript. The general consensus, so far as I could tell from a random sampling, was that it was well delivered but short on detail and, finally, not the sort of speech that would convince anyone not already convinced.

There have been some excellent dissections — I think, for example, of Thomas Sowell’s astringent column contrasting Obama’s rhetoric with that most uncommon virtue, common sense. Many people noted the irony of Obama complaining about the “lies” and misrepresentations of his planned government takeover of health care while he blithely indulged in various truth-economies himself. As Sowell notes, “To tell us, with a straight face, that he can insure millions more people without adding to the already skyrocketing deficit, is world-class chutzpa and an insult to anyone’s intelligence. To do so after an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office has already showed this to be impossible reveals the depths of moral bankruptcy behind the glittering words.”

As usual, Sowell’s column is a model of clarity and perspicacity. Do read it. But the really tremendous piece on the speech is by Shikha Dalmia, an senior analyst for Reason Foundation, who took off the gloves, stepped up to the plate, and scored a touchdown (I am an equal opportunity sports referrer) with her Forbes column “Obama’s Health Care Plan: Put Up And Shut Up.”

The speech, Dalmia observed, showed the American people “the policy equivalent of the middle finger.” Exactly.

Obama came to power promising a new era of “post-partisan” governance in which comity and bi-partisanship would rule. But, as Dalmia notes, “If there was anything bipartisan about the speech it was that he embraced every bad big-government idea from both sides. If he prevails, the American public won’t get “choice and competition” as he proclaimed, but a one-size-fits-all government-prescribed health care plan that it dare not refuse and dare not challenge.”

I like this lady. She tells it as it is.

Perhaps the most striking–and disturbing–thing about the speech was the unblinking confidence Obama exuded while breaking key campaign promises he made to voters. He had raked poor Hillary Clinton over the coals for admitting that her road to universal coverage was paved with an individual mandate. “Everyone would be forced to buy coverage, even if you can’t afford it,” warned Obama in an ad. “You pay a penalty if you don’t.”

Yet, there he was last night scolding “individuals who can afford coverage but game the system by avoiding responsibility.” Never mind that the prime gamers are not the uninsured (whose unpaid bills cost “the system” less than $40 billion every year) but the underinsured covered by Medicare and Medicaid (whom private insurers cross-subsidize to the tune of over $90 billion annually because the government refuses to pay the full cost of their care). Still, he hectored: “Improving our health care system works only if everybody does their part.”

Many commentators seem obsessed with the minutiae of the various health care proposals. They do not realize that “reforming” health care, or health care insurance, is merely the pretext for an almost unimaginable increase of government interference in your life. Dalmia has a few examples.

Obama didn’t say exactly how he would make “everyone do their part”–a question he posed repeatedly to Hillary. But his buddy Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., has some rather well-developed ideas on that score. Baucus has proposed a bill that would force the uninsured to pay fines on a sliding scale of income, with those making 300% of the poverty level having to cough up as much as $3,800 a year. In short, Americans would have to pay Uncle Sam for the privilege of remaining uninsured. If there were truth-in-labeling laws for Congress, it would be required to call this bill TonySopranoCare.

Americans are historically used to separating “Government” and “The People”. Our country is structured on that premise. It colors our words, our metaphors and our political discourse. If, indeed, Obama gets a plan through Congress, the evolution of the health care system to a market mechanism will go on apace unless they outlaw private care. They could, like Canada did, but it would not work. Private care is returning to Canada in defiance of the law. Medicare is unsustainable and many older people are starting to realize this and make private arrangements. A wise health reform plan would incorporate these developing changes but I see no wisdom in this plan, only power politics.

Most of this is possible because the SCOTUS has broadly (very broadly) interpreted the commerce clause of the Consititution so that anything that might involve interstate commerces (up to and including buying products produced in another state) comes under the control of Congress.

What we need is another Constitutional Convention, as authorized by the Constitution, called by the States. One of the Amendments would be to direct the SCOTUS to interpret the various portions of the Constitution using contemporaneous definitions and documentations. Allow impeachment for using ‘auras’ or ‘permutations’ etc.

Obama as a soprano?…no I cannot agree. I just hope we get the reforms and some health care insurance, for those that dont have any, that is affordable. I also agree that we should also have a system for those that do not want to participate and can choose to opt for private insurance, as in canada and britain. If and when we can do that, then we will have accomplished something we can all be proud of. America deserves the better than what we got right now.

I sure hope the policy wonks on the right are finding a path OUT of Obamacare, when/if passed, in whatever form it takes. It is easier to protest — much more difficult to restore. Who will formulate a viable plan out of statism?

The notion that Obamacare is irreversible is simply unacceptable. I, for one, refuse to capitulate. There must be some sort of peaceful resolution that restores liberty to individual citizens.

Perhaps, as a strategy, it is best we don’t announce our plans. I hope this is the case. My fear, though, is that many good people expect Obamacare to simply slide past their protests, announced and invincible. They’ll give up. Proclaim defeat. Go home. Go Galt.

Both parties know this very well, in fact they bet on this each election cycle, as well as the American Voter not understanding nuances of American political system. Republican and Democrat party divide the spoils each cycle, regardless who is elected, the party organization does not suffer loss or revenue. In fact it increases when the pendulum starts to arc back, increasing amount every year.

Conservatives require socialist, communist, bleeding heart liberals to enrage their core and leverage this rage into a cash cow
Liberals require fascist, militant, heartless conservatives to do the same.

The two sides require each other to fund their political industry, an Industry just like cars or airplanes. Except you actually receive value when you buy a car, when you buy a politician you get a marketing campaign, good for a few years.

Until the voter gets smart and ignores / overcomes systemic problems, it doesn’t matter who gets elected, we only feed a ravenous hunger for money.

The gutless proprietors of the overblown health care bill have designed it to go into full effect in 2013, from what I understand. Why the “urgency” to pass? Why postpone addressing the “crisis” they incessantly clamor about? There’s plenty of time to step off and slow down, and debate massive government like it should be crushed, I mean debated.

There are many examples of imperial Washingtonites flipping the bird to the people. One I can’t forget is when Obama held up a tea bag in ridicule while making snide remarks about regular American protesters. For me, this was a motivational moment, and I am now a very active activist, if you will.

His ability to now lie to my face is quite unnerving, to say the least. Fact-checking his latest speech confirms he is lying. FIGHT!
