I read the news that the major networks had pulled the plug on Mrs. Kerry’s speech. But did it have to go this far?

1. John Moore ( Useful Fools ):The danger of the latter part would be her running into the Vice President.
“Shove it!”
“F*** You!”
Jul 27, 2004 - 12:00 pm 2. Fausta:Live long and prosper!
Jul 27, 2004 - 12:33 pm 3. John Moore ( Useful Fools ):Now do you suppose the networks would extend the same courtesy? Somehow I doubt it.
I wonder if this person’s behavior is going to impact the election. Hmmmm…
Jul 27, 2004 - 12:50 pm 4. PeterUK:Where are you going to keep her if Kerry wins,it looks like a re-run of “The Man In The Iron Mask”?
You’ll also have to change her title she can’t be the First Lady, she can be First….
Jul 27, 2004 - 1:01 pm 5. DennisThePeasant:Could the Democrats be any more “Not Ready For Prime Time”? They can’t trust their putative First Lady with a microphone and a teleprompter?
What I was really hoping for was Al Sharpton introducing a speech by Dennis Kucinich followed by Jesse Jackson introducing a speech by Howard Dean followed by Maxine Waters introducing a speech by Teresa Kerry. With a couple of songs by Pete Seeger and La Barbra…
Now that would be the beginning of a landslide…
Or maybe they should just have Michael Moore do an interpretive dance of the Democratic Party platform in a sequined Speedo to the accompaniment of 22 kazoos and get this whole bit of a farce over with.
Jul 27, 2004 - 1:04 pm 6. Roberts:Meanwhile Karl Rove is in danger of chortling to death with glee.
Jul 27, 2004 - 1:30 pm 7. Mark Poling:I don’t know, Theresa Heinz-Kerry would combine the best of Hillary, Nancy, and Jackie all in one very well-heeled package.
Imagine the possibilities.
Jul 27, 2004 - 2:06 pm 8. Rick Ballard:DtP,
Have you seen this FT article on the DNC’s plan for Not a Clue to run as a ’stealth’ candidate? They not only want to keep the old drunk and the cabana boy’s keeper off TV, they want him to hide somewhere until September. I thought August was supposed to be reintroduce ‘Not a Clue’ to the public month.
BTW – I’d appreciate your take on what the financial info on this site might mean. “Cash
Jul 27, 2004 - 2:21 pm 9. Syl:Okay, I know this won’t be popular here. But. Even if I disagree with her politically, I LIKE Theresa.
So there.
Wish she were on ‘our team’. Heh.
Jul 27, 2004 - 5:33 pm 10. DennisThePeasant:Rick-
To be honest, I am 25+ years removed from my serious campaign worker days, and even then I was little more than a worker bee. [Except campus politics, where I was a certified big wheel for my four years...but we did that all without the benefit of cash.] I just don’t know enough about campaigns and campaign organizations to be able to comment meaningfully on the numbers.
Not that being unable to comment meaningfully has ever stopped me before…
Syl-
She is on our team. Think about it.
Jul 27, 2004 - 5:49 pm 11. Rick Ballard:Syl,
Personal feelings are fine, no one should deny them. BTW – She is on our team.
As is the photog who released the ‘Sherm the Sperm’ foto of Not a Clue.
Just saw Michael Moore on O’Reilly. That man is not safe (Moore) in America while I live. Never actually listened to him before but he’s wasting air on this planet. First time I’ve seen O’Reilly in two years – he’s still as big (if not bigger) jerk as he ever was.
Jul 27, 2004 - 5:53 pm 12. JB:O’Reilly is a weak spinning hack.
Repeats every MSM canard: “imminent threat”, “no WMD found”, doesn’t mention the other strategic reasons for removing Saddam. 100 people from the blogosphere coulda buried Moore.
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:02 pm 13. DennisThePeasant:From Boston-
It is being reported that John Kerry did not, in fact, visit NASA. Those pictures of him in that suit are alleged to be from Kerry’s short, ill-fated film career…specifically his part as one of the sperm in Woody Allen’s “Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex”. It is further alleged that Kerry left his acting career behind and went into politics when it had become clear the role got him typecast.
Developing…
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:06 pm 14. DennisThePeasant:I don’t know, Theresa Heinz-Kerry would combine the best of Hillary, Nancy, and Jackie all in one very well-heeled package.
The best of Hillary, Nancy and Jackie is more like Sybil Fawlty than Teresa Heinz-Kerry. But then again, any package attached to John Kerry is, by definition, well heeled.
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:18 pm 15. Paul:Having read the transcript first I simply couldn’t bear to watch the O’Reilly-Moore “debate”.
Too bad it wasn’t Christopher Hitchens, as his critique of Moore’s crockumentary was devastating and right on the money. O’Reilly is a buffoon.
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:19 pm 16. Rick Ballard:DtP,
If Roger would put the picture up we could have a helluva caption contest. Maybe Allah, (in the time that He remains) will offer one up.
Listening to John Dean do the most unimpassioned deadpan delivery that I have ever heard in 40 years of listening to political rhetoric. The Titanic has stopped to take on ice, folks, no need to worry. This is embarassing.
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:21 pm 17. Merril Cole:When is George Soros giving his speech at the convention? I can’t find it on the schedule… Oh, there it is-Howard Dean!
Would it be fair to launch a campaign to examine closely the speach patterns of Heinz-Kerry, Soros, and Ted Kennedy? I have difficulty understanding the words they speak, let alone the message.
Theresa may have orders of magnatude greater wealth than the Bushes, but Laura out-classes her.
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:22 pm 18. PeterUK:I’m beginning to feel sorry for Theresa, all that money and she ends up with a giant tapeworm.
May I ask a question from this side of the pond,on’t the Democrats have anybody normal?
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:35 pm 19. Rick Ballard:Merril C.,
Teresa Heinz amassed her wealth in the same manner that her husband has.
Class is a natural attribute having to do with the aristocracy so well described by Edmund Burke. Laura Bush (and, indeed Roger) may lay and defend a claim to being natural aristocrats. Neither Teresa, her husband nor W can lay a claim that I would not oppose in that regard. Our natural aristocracy resides more in our First Ladies than it ever has in our Presidents. Lady Bird Johnson, Rosalyn Carter, Barabara Bush and Laura Bush are all persons worthy of esteem (some moreso than others).
Teresa and Not a Clue are far closer to the Kennedy’s than even Sherm can dream.
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:37 pm 20. richard mcenroe:Ah, Theresa…. hey, anybody else here remember Martha Mitchell?
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:37 pm 21. Joe Schmoe:I am fascinated by the Teresa Heinz-Kerry issue.
I like what I have seen of Ms. Heinz-Kerry. Her I’m-so-rich-that-I-don’t-need-to-take-crap-from-anyone
attitude is very refreshing. She could be a real asset to Kerry if she plays her cards right.
However, she could also be a huge liability.
When you look at her impact on the a coldblooded
From what I can see, she is automatically vulnerable on two fronts:
1. Her vast wealth. It already seems likely that she’s been taking advantage of every tax loophole known to humankind, while advocating tax increases for those less well-off. Tax increases that (a) won’t affect her, and (b) she probably won’t pay in any event.
2. Her foreign birth and strange accent.
She can overcome these liabilities if she remains likable and a little quirky.
Actually, one of the best things for her to do would be openly admit — and flaunt — her wealth. If some reporter asks her whether she knows the cost of a gallon of milk, etc., Ms. Kerry would be wise to reply, in an arch tone, “of course not, young man. I’m rich!” She could even take it a little farther and talk about how fast and comfortable her private jet is, etc. Middle America will actually like her if she comes accross as a lady who is living large and loving it.
However, if she begins to exhibit the following characteristics, she’ll be an anchor around Kerry’s neck:
1. The Rich Bitch. If she ever makes a single snobbish remark about Middle America, she is dead meat. It is often very hard for rich people to suppress their innate sense of elitism, condescention, and superiority. Kerry’s advisors have undoubetdly told her to avoid this at all costs, but she’ll be in the media spotlight for the next four months. If she has any feelings of elitism, it’ll probably be impossible for her to keep them under wraps for that long. Interestingly, if this happens, it probably won’t be in response to a “gotcha” question from a right-wing reporter. Ms. Kerry strikes me as too smart for that. Rather, it’ll probably just slip out one day, in a thoughtless offhand remark. If it does, she’s probably toast.
2. A faux populist. If Ms. Kerry tries to “get real,” she’s toast. Any clumsy attempt to relate to the lives and concerns of ordinary Americans will likely be fatal. For instance, if she says “hey, I had a normal childhood, my mom made me mop the floor and peel potatoes; she strictly forbid the maids from helping me with these tasks,” again, she’s doomed. As I recall, Howard Dean’s mom made a similar remark, something like the fact that their Park Avenue apartment had only three bedrooms and no servants, so Howard had a normal childhood, etc. Again, Kerry’s advisors have undoubtedly told her to avoid this, but as a politician’s wife on the campaign trail she will also feel a lot of pressure to connect with and relate to the voters, so something like this could easily slip out.
3. A poliical liberal. If Ms. Kerry has any of the political views typical of her peers, and if she starts talking about them forcefully, she will be on very thin ice. The danger of this for her is heightened by the fact that she is a rich woman who is not used to taking any crap from anyone. I mean, just imagine a remark about sexually repressed, bible-thumping fundamentalists, or unseemly, troublemaking black activists, etc. One can only imagine the embarrasment that could flow from a discussion of any number of issues, such as abortion, gay marriage, whatever.
Anyway, this is a fascinating issue. I very much like what I have seen of Ms. Kerry, and while I hope her husband is destroyed at the polls I hope it does not come at her expense. It’ll be very interesting to see how this plays out.
Jul 27, 2004 - 6:52 pm 22. Rick Ballard:Wow, Obama is a real hitter. What a great talent wasted in a dying party. He’s not the Dems future but whatever replaces the Dems will sure be able to use him. Look for him to arm wrestle Ford for the VP slot in ‘08. Perhaps, as the DP dies a new party is being born?
Defending Not a Clue now and the fire is gone, second in a row with a dead flat delivery concerning Sherm, drifting vaguely antiwar trying for the body bag edge, hope the pay off is worth the kneepads. Gone for the Arab American vote now, throwing in some Scripture for idiots.
Back to Scripture and unifying theme, no promises to blacks so far.
Back to dead flat appeal for support for Sherm and the Lesser John – this fella knows how to draw attention to himself – another appeal to scripture – this guy is really good – but not for Not a Clue and the Lesser John.

yet another keyboard and mouthful of beer rendered useless. DtP, i demand reparations!
Jul 27, 2004 - 7:09 pm 24. richard mcenroe:Theresa Heinz Kerry would play up a hoot on Will and Grace, but she’s a washout in the White House. Can anyone really see her stepping into the shoes of Eleanor Roosevelt or Ladybird Johnson, or even Laura Bush?
Jul 27, 2004 - 7:21 pm 25. wxjames:PeterUK, Sorry, the closest they come to normal is Slick Willy hisself. Why do you think he always talks about him ?
Jul 27, 2004 - 7:23 pm 26. richard mcenroe:Michael Moore may be able to stampede a court jester like O’Reilly, but I would love to see him try his act on someone like Brit Hume, Hewitt, or even Tony Snow, who does their homework.
Jul 27, 2004 - 7:38 pm 27. PeterUK:wxjames,
Didn’t he have a funny way of smoking a cigar and sex gave him amnesia, tragic? “How was it for you?” …”How was what?” He didn’t lie, it just drained the blood from his brain and blanked out the memory
From this side the Democrats look like a bunch of drama queens having a bad hair day.You seem to have some proper chaps in the Republicans though.
Jul 27, 2004 - 7:53 pm 28. richard mcenroe:FWIW, an AOL poll (unscientific, duh) came out three-to-one that Theresa is a drag on her husband’s campaign…
Jul 27, 2004 - 8:40 pm 29. Rick Ballard:Peter,
Actually, marriage to Hillary gave him amnesia, sex gave him the ability to multitask.
Jul 27, 2004 - 9:21 pm 30. Knucklehead:Syl:
“Even if I disagree with her politically, I LIKE Theresa.”
Be careful about what you are finding to admire here, Syl. The “I Like Teresa” camp strikes me as VERY similar to the “I Like Janet Reno” camp.
There is much to be admired about strong people, women included, unafraid to speak their mind or “take action”. But the words and actions can never be discounted for the sake of the “strength” they exhibit.
The Democrats are, after all, the political party which finds nothing wrong with ordering, and openly taking proud responsibility for, an action that results in the deaths of a bunch of self-isolating loons (who, BTW, were solidly “locked in a box”) on pure hearsay and evidence of minor infractions of law while, in another breath, tell us that an externally aggressive, murderous despot, against whom there was far more than hearsay and ample evidence of very serious crimes, was safely “locked in a box” (a box, BTW, that required the US Navy and Airforce to keep locked at high risk and expense).
Behind the seemingly admirable “strength” there is idiocy and turpitude.
