According to Ellisblog, the internecine war at CBS has already begun and it isn’t pretty. John Ellis pulled the following from the AP wire:
(Kerry “Message Maven” Joel) Lockhart said (Rather producer) Mapes asked him the weekend before the story broke to call Burkett. “She basically said there’s a guy who is being helpful on the story who wants to talk to you,” Lockhart said, adding that it was common knowledge that CBS was working on a story raising questions about Bush’s Guard service. Mapes told him there were some records “that might move the story forward. She didn’t tell me what they said.”

1. mongai:If ever in a Mary Mapes-like pinch, who-ya gonna call? Ellis! What a great blog. So far what he said would happen yesterday seems to be happening today. Did Mapes hire an agent and a lawyer? Personally, I’d like her to expose everything, write a book and make a ton of yen, and then start a wildly popular center-right blog.
Sep 21, 2004 - 9:39 am 2. R C Dean:The evidence of collusion continues to pile up. Why did Mapes feel so confident that Lockhart would do a favor for her? Why did Lockhart do her a favor? Why did Mapes so freely pass on someone out to hurt Bush to the Kerry campaign?
The other shoe in this story was always whether the forgeries had DNC fingerprints on them. It is sure beginning to look that way. Catastrophe looms for the Dems. As the internal turf wars heat up both at CBS and at the DNC, there is almost no possibility of someone NOT shopping their rivals to the press as colluding on this.
And every day that goes by with this story at the top of the page is another day that Kerry doesn’t make up ground on Bush.

I think once somebody gets ahold of Lucy Ramirez and talks to her about the documents this whole thing will straighten itself out.
Lucy will explain the provenance of the memos, their eery similarity to a Microsoft Word document, and Karl Rove’s role in all of this. Once all of this happens, Patsy-Gate should go by the wayside…

Lucy Ramirez will explain all.
Sep 21, 2004 - 1:00 pm 7. Terrye:What amazes me is that all any of these people want to talk about is Bush and his status as deserter. It is as if this subject had not gotten them into enough trouble already.
I just heard some silly woman on Fox babbling about how nobody had come forward to say Bush was in Alabama. In truth three people came forward, but I guess they don’t count.
That is something else I have noticed about the Dems on this issue, you can not talk to them. You offer evidence, they ignore you and just keep ranting. weird..
And now they are obviously part of this and where are the charts?
Sep 21, 2004 - 2:32 pm 8. richard mcenroe:Or Lucy Ramirez would, if she wasn’t a fictional teevee detective There is an actress Lexa Doig who played “Detective Lucy Ramirez” on the “Chris Isaak Show”, who also appeared in the TV show “Earth: final conflict” as the character “Joan Price.”
