Zarqawi Arrested?

According to at least one source the “terror mastermind,” the recently appointed Al Qaeda number one, has been arrested in Baakuba. So far no official onfirmation. I’m betting this is a rumor. It’s 11PM in LA and I’m going to bed. I’ll find out in the morning.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Sadly.

The wizbang link is to a story from July – an earlier false alarm. Drudge has linked to the Itar-Tass story. OTOH Itar-Tass? Russian press and their Mid-East media sources are not very reliable. But we all know that.

Maybe its just me but I’d prefer that it leaks that this terrorist jackhole was “killed trying to escape” then let the CIA have him for the rest of his natural born life. Pump him for information then when he’s lost his usefulness, bullet/brain/, problem solved.

Well, the Washington Times has picked up the story and just put it on the web an hour ago – after the denials.

I seem to recall one or two days of hush-hush when Saddam was captured. I don’t recall the details, exactly, or how time was stalled for (if it was).

Developing…

I think Saddam was captured about 12:30 PM (Eastern) on December 13th and Instapundit had it (via UPI) at 9:00 AM. It was the first post of the day, so confirmation may have come overnight. One-half to one day.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the arrest of Zarqawi would follow the same pattern.

I wonder if the lack of denials from the Coalition is meaningful? Seems to me that past rumors like this were officially squelched fairly quickly (i.e., we would’ve had a denial by now.)

Wasn’t Zarqawi captured in the same town once before? I wonder if this is a replay of the same rumor? Well, we shall see. I’m waiting for the video, myself.
