No, it’s not nearly as bad as Sri Lanka, obviously, or even Europe, but it’s been raining pretty hard in Southern California lately, seemingly without stop.
And, no, this is not my house. We’re still here, despite the local monsoons, which are the worst I’ve seen since the Seventies when I remember cars washing down Laurel Canyon to Sunset Boulevard, practically to the late-lamented Schwab’s Coffee Shop. Several rooms of my mother-in-law’s house in Sherman Oaks–that’s “The Valley” to you outliers–are presently flooded. Moon Unit Zappa jokes are not appreciated.

1. richard mcenroe:Yeah. the weather’s been so bad this year I actually saw a Hummer with mud on it.
Jan 9, 2005 - 7:09 pm 2. richard mcenroe:The runoff’s up over the sidewalks here in North Hollywood. And I hear we’re looking at another 3-5 days of this.
Jan 9, 2005 - 7:35 pm 3. Jim Baratta:I’m here in Pasadena and all the grass seed I planted last week has washed away and is growing in the sidewalk. I haven’t seen this much rain in years…
Jan 9, 2005 - 7:55 pm 4. The Friendly Grizzly:When was Schwab’s ever a coffee shop? It was a drugstore that had a lunch counter way back when. Do you mean Googie’s, which was just west of Schwab’s?
Jan 9, 2005 - 8:13 pm 5. John Moore ( Useful Fools ):I assume that Malibu is inaccessible.
Please feel free to send the rain over to the area east of Phoenix. Our main reservoir is only at 40%.
Meanwhile, thanks to Jimmy Carter and some environmentalists, two water storage dams don’t exist. The result is a lot of water flowing through Phoenix (an unusual occurrence) and ultimately to the Gulf of California.
Meanwhile, the drought, according to the climatologists, still has a decade or more to go. This winter seems to be an El Nino exception to it.
Jan 9, 2005 - 8:18 pm 6. richard mcenroe:John Moore _ Want to piss off the treehuggers? Tell them George Bush assumed the throne of the Fisher King in November and that’s why the rain came back.
Of course, this current mess is because Boxer pissed him off over Ohio…
Jan 9, 2005 - 8:54 pm 7. Anthony Ragan:which are the worst I’ve seen since the Seventies
Early 80s, actually. I was around for the El Nino that amde LA look like it was having a “bad hair day.”
Jan 9, 2005 - 10:34 pm 8. PJ:It was intense in OC, too, sky black as night at 3:30 and torrents of rain, runoff swirling down the street and over the parkway. *gulp*
Jan 9, 2005 - 10:51 pm 9. richard mcenroe:How are the hillsides holding up in your neighborhood, Roger?
Jan 9, 2005 - 10:59 pm 10. BigFire:It took me 90 minutes to get from Woodland Hills to Glendale this morning. It would be sensible for quite a few people in my office to work from home today (Santa Clarita to Los Angeles basin train are not running, and the road really bad).
Jan 10, 2005 - 7:55 am 11. mythusmage:Down here roads are getting flooded out that don’t get flooded out in a regular storm. Fortunately, the big waves didn’t show up, so no shots of Mission Beach getting hit by ‘em on tv.
As I type things look wet outside, but no sign of precipitation. So I think we’re getting drizzle right now. But last I heard today is supposed to be as bad as yesterday.
For everybody in Arizona, a bit of good news. Namely, it’s heading your way. You sent us some rain back last summer, so we’re returning the favor now.
Jan 10, 2005 - 8:10 am 12. mythusmage:Forgot something…
Namely, a bit of the town of Encinitas fell of into the ocean. Heard about it on the KGB morning show. Yes, California is falling into the ocean. It’s just taking its own sweet time about it.
Jan 10, 2005 - 8:14 am 13. M. Simon:Pandora’s Box is long gone.
Is Cantors still in business?
Jan 10, 2005 - 6:50 pm 14. richard mcenroe:M. Simon Yep, Cantor’s is still holding down its corner on Fairfax… or as the parody song put it:
Ve gotta rock onto
Fairfax Avenue!
You never saw such knishes!
Ve gotta rock onto
Fairfax Avenue!
It’s where I get my salted fishes!
