Et tu Hosni?

TigerHawk has an interesting post about the seeming capitulation of the Eygptian strongman/leader to the new democratic trend. One day afte he was snubbed by Condi Rice, Hosni Mubarak announces a “new package of democratic reforms.”

Of course, we should be skeptical, but that’s the obvious. Hosni and his buddies were probably panicked about their aid checks. But more astonishing is the whirlwind-like power of this movement toward democracy. Even though elections in Egypt (still a big if, of course) would likely produce some form of Islamic government, it would at least be an elected one. Different patterns might emerge. The status quo was wretched, for the Egyptians and for everybody else in the region. Change, as they say in the I-Ching, is good. Let’s see if it is real.

OT but a fairly entertaining parody of Kofi Annan answering Oil-For-Food/Weapons/Palaces scandal.

Thanks for the link.

One is forced to wonder where all the activists of the left are. Their silence is deafening. The last four months have seen the most momentous progress in favor of representative government and against tyranny in at least 15 years, and we hear nothing from the Left. No support for the democrats in Lebanon. No rejoicing in the politicking in Iraq (which is wonderful to behold). And no cheering at the rising tide in Egypt. It is sickening, frankly.

Of course not. Why should they concern themselves with such trivial issues as the expansion of democracy and the global promotion of liberty when there far more important issues at stake?

Issues like, you know, Jeff Gannon…

I always have to chuckle when I see/hear an autocrat or dictator described as a “strongman.” It makes me imagine Hosni in the gym, working out on the Bowflex. :-D

No offense meant to you, Roger. I love your blog.

Roger,

Freedom is on the march!

Let’s keep this ball rolling.

I know my penchant for Rock is getting a little old and trite but we need something to stir up a blogswarm. We need a marketing plan e.g. “We Are the World.”

The Mad Mullahs of Iran will go nuclear soon if we do nothing. If someone has a better idea other than outright “liberation” let’s hear it.

I know of nothing better to ignite this than good old fashion “Am Rock” music of the young. After all our Rock played a significant roll in the demise of the former Soviet Eastern Block. Read the comments sometime of the former Hungarian Ambassador to the US:

The Strategic Influence and Power of Am Rock & Roll

Imagine the sheer power of the Blogos coupled with the idealism and vigor of the young. This evil regime of the Axis of Evil will implode. Do we see a connection with the Lord of the Rings? After all the author was not foretelling the rise of the Third Reich:-)

I can hear the thundering roar ringing now in my ears as this spreads around the world.

The end is near for the women hating Mad Mullahs of Iran.

Cue the music from Queen

Altogether now

We Will, We Will . . . Rock You!

We Will, We Will . . . Rock You!

ìOf course, we should be skepticalî

Not really. The odds are very favorable that a wonderful cultural and political shift is taking place in the Arab world. Many wonderful things will likely occur before the end of this year. Condi Rice will likely push Hillary Clinton out of the spotlight.

Bernard Lewis is my guru and Iíve taken it for granted that we had to encourage the Arab world to embrace modernity. I have always been an optimist. Still, things are working out even better than I had ever thought possible.

Feb 26, 2005 - 9:56 am 8. Perry Branson:

The left have no choice but to either ignore the trend toward freedom in the world or disparage it. For the last 80+ years, they have been the (self described) vanguard of freedom, liberty, and equality in the world. To admit that their (quasi-religious) beliefs are untenable, their patron saints were monsters, and that it has required the Conservatives Reagan, Thatcher, Bush, et al, to liberate so many, is impossible to incorporate into their self representation. If they are on the wrong side of history, their already rageful humiliation becomes total, and their guilt over the atrocities committed in the name of Utopian leftism, becomes all consuming. Better to attack the straw men of capitalism/conservatism (Israel, Halliburton, and the neo-cons) than to look in the mirror.

Feb 26, 2005 - 10:15 am 9. Ron Wrght:

David and Perry,

I totally agree this is a war of ideologies. We are doing extremely well on the ground but our message is being diluted and muddied by the left and the MSM.

This is where the Blogos can play a powerful supporting role in conveying this message and relaying the voices going unheard from these countries dominated by repressive radical Islamofascist regimes. Their “lies” can’t withstand the light of the free world.

Funny isn’t it though on the role reversial between the Dem Party and the Rep Party. What the Dem Party used to stand for has been co-opted by the moderate wing of the Rep Party.

There is something fundamental about values here. But moderation in all things. I do not support the extreme views of the right either.

Here’s my take. In reaction to Condi cancelling her trip to Egypt, Hosni threw a card out on the table. But he’s keeping his opponent in jail. Now going on a month. And, the diabetic man can be stressed to death. So? Hosni has to play a very tight game. With high stakes. And, an ANGRY GEORGE W. BUSH. Israel is a mouse in this “game.” The real winds of war are blowing on Assad’s head, now. And, Bush isn’t playing games! What you have is a situation that doesn’t get past the end of March. This year. While in Israel, the same deadline leads to new elections. Because the budget vote won’t come and pass before March 31st. So set your calendars. Israel is forced into new elections that occur 90 days after the failure to pass the budget. I’m even going to guess if this comes to pass both Labor and Likud are going to become minor parties. And, coming out of Arik Sharon’s “foxhole” will be a new amalgamated UNITY GOVERNMENT. With extremists at both ends running for very small pieces of the pie. Syria, meanwhile, is in very deep trouble. America will get to squeeze this pimple. Driving into the flank with Iraq. And, from the sea; where our navy is set to engage through Lebanon. Oh, yeah. Those buried WMD’s. Bekka Valley? They may try to fly them; but they’re just a local disaster waiting to happen. Meanwhile, the gunpowder is still dry. Assad has the match and the fuse.

If you want rock, why not rework the song from “Team America”? You know, something like “Liberty - **** ****!” It should translate into any language.

Wouldn’t that be fun, if 20 years from now, people from every country on earth could sing that in their own language, to the same tune, with the same meaning.

I know, my dreams are odd. But I actually am running a fever.

It’s the snow ball theory, a variation on the formerly popular domino theory. A little clump of snow starts rolling down a hill. Then little by little more and more snow sticks to the clump. It gets heavier and heavier and rolls faster and faster and mows down all the bad guys in its wake.

Right now we’re only at the beginning of the snow ball’s journey, but by the time Condi takes her oath of office four years from now, the sun will have come out and there’ll be fields of democracies sprouting up as far as the eye can see.

Something like the fields of daffodils growing in the melting snow in “Doctor Zhivago.” I just loved that shot!
