When I first read this report about the boycott of Israeli universities by Britain’s AUT (Association of University Teachers), I cleaned the steam out of my ears and shrugged, repeating the familiar saw: “Everything old is new again.”
But then I realized that it was specifically Haifa University these clowns were boycotting, where I have a friend on the faculty. In fact, that friend, A. B. Yehoshua, is probably the finest writer I know (and I know more than a few). He is also arguably one of the world’s greatest living authors, oft spoken of for a Nobel Prize, and a continuous and well-known supporter of Palestinian-Israeli peace, even at the height of Intifada II. So this is who those racist at the AUT are boycotting. Good thing Kafka isn’t still alive. They’d probably boycott him too. What idiots!
(And now I am off the LA Times Festival of Books where I am hoping not to be boycotted. Back later in the day.)

When anyone lectures Israel for not joining the world community and tells them they should leave the lives of their children in the hands of the UN and the intellectual elite of Europe this report is the perfect argument. The reason they are so agressive in their self defense is because if the relied on Europe and the left in America they would be dead at the bottom of the Red Sea.

I just take it for granted that anyone possessing a soft science Ph.D. is an idiot until proven otherwise. The halfway sensible ones are the exceptions to the general rule. The really disturbing thing about this boycott is that the AUTís members almost certainly will insist that they are not anti-Semitic. Furthermore, itís highly likely that a few of them are even Jewish! These people lie to themselves. The claim to be upset by the alleged fascist actions of the Sharon government—but when you push them to the wall, they will blurt out the ugly truth: the leftist cultural milieu despises the meritocratic driven Jewish secular and religious traditions.
Apr 23, 2005 - 11:44 am 3. Michael B:This is substantively a particularly repugnant move on the part of the (40,000 strong) AUT since it’s based on a strikingly poor assessment of the social/political milieu and, even worse, the AUT forwarded this decision in a manner that did not allow dissent to be voiced. I.e., once again giving supportive evidence to the already obvious doctrinaire quality dominant in academe. The following quote from the JPost:
“The speeches were met with rapturous applause from the audience, before AUT executive president Angela Roger cut short the session and moved to deny a right of reply to opponents of the motions. The session was then directed towards a vote, and a “lack of time” was cited as the reason preventing challenges to the motions from being heard…”

The irony is if it weren’t for the existence of Israel, these SOB’s wouldn’t have the trope of anti-Zionism to hide behind. They’d be exposed for the plain old Jew haters they are.
Gotta love the first comment at LGF: “Tonight Iím gonna party like it was 1939.”

The governments of Europe have forgotten what happenned during WWII and they are skipping down the same path again. Bowing to an agressive fascist system of belief and handing over innocents to save their own hides. And feelling rightous while they are doing it. Post Modern denial at it’s finest.
Apr 23, 2005 - 1:58 pm 6. chuck:What power does the AUT actually possess? They say they will be issueing guidelines. Does the AUT have any sort of coercive power to enforce the guidelines or do they just rely on members to follow along like good little dogs and shame their more cowardly peers into complicity? Just asking.
Lord, how is it that academe has become such an ignoble morass of leftwing lunacy and shallow self righteousness? It is disgusting. Someone tell me what society gains by supporting these fools.
Apr 23, 2005 - 2:11 pm 7. richard mcenroe:How about we start boycotting anyone associated with British Universities?
Apr 23, 2005 - 3:04 pm 8. PSGInfinity:This is actually a very convenient development. Now we have a new list of additions to the No Fly List. After all, they’re enabling terror, and they’re anti-Jewish bigots to boot. I think it would be a great statement…
Apr 23, 2005 - 3:05 pm 9. RBMN:When he authored “Mein Kampf,” everyone should have believed that Hitler was deadly serious.
And when Palestinians, and others, print maps that have Israel erased from the face of the Earth, everyone should believe that Israel’s Muslim neighbors are deadly serious too.
I fear that many on the Left, for some inexplicable reason, believe that these maps ARE a serious statement of intent, but just don’t care.
Apr 23, 2005 - 3:58 pm 10. David Thomson:ì…but just don’t care.î
The Leftist actually do care. They prefer that the ìfascistî state of Israel disappears. The Arabs are allegedly victims of capitalist exploitation. Nazis hated Jews primarily for their genetic makeup. The latter were accused of polluting the pure Aryan gene pool. Todayís Leftists are instead concerned with Jewish cultural values. Both Howard Stern and Irving Kristol surprisingly have something in common. They were pushed to excel as children and do something special with their lives. Such anti-egalitarianism, according to the hard core Leftist, must be exterminated. The hostility towards Israel increases as it becomes less socialist. This not a mere coincidence.

Don’t be silly Peter, they would go on strike and win better working conditions and six weeks paid vacation. There is no limit to the power of right thinking.

Why when I read this did the phrase “bodice ripper” come to mind?
Apr 23, 2005 - 7:28 pm 15. PeterUK:Do Auts wear bodices? Seems a bit much in this post-feminist world, granted there will be a few hanging about outside the campus hoping for a raiding party, but still, bodices and dungarees!
Apr 23, 2005 - 7:42 pm 16. Mike_Nargizian:At Mona Baker’s website she has a link to a page of notable ‘zionist leaders’ quotes…
I don’t know how many are false, taken out of context or just blatant fabrications?
However, I know she does have the Ariel Sharon quote from 2001 where he says “don’t worry about America we own America” and a I know for a fact that that quote was a blatant lie, proved as such, by a blatantly biased British “reporter” who then admitted she never heard him say it.

Georgie Ann Geyer is the “reporter” who copied a pro-Hamas US website, Islamic Association for Palestine which reported in October of 2001 that it “had heard” “while listening? to Kol Yisreal radio it heard Ariel Sharon make that comment.

The one university where most Israeli Arabs study, certainly more than the others.
Then again in the interests of the cause they are expendable.
From this
“EU: Hebrew University excels at neural computation”

“As a result of the new status, the HU center has signed an agreement to host some 100 researchers from Europe to train them in applying a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding the functions of the brain.”
it seems to be a case of biting the hand….
or is it jealousy/envy or just plain “arab street humiliation”?

“Yehoshua article sparks storm”

“A new article by A.B. Yehoshua, one of the most celebrated contemporary Israeli novelists, is an impressive, controversial, intellectual and explosive piece that has caused all hell to break loose among local scholars and politicians.”
“Basically, Yehoshua said that at the basis of the amorphous identity is the understanding that every Jew around the world recognizes himself as such before he attempts to assume any other identity”.
Does this fit the bill of the American Jew?
It seems more like the behaviour of your Muslim community.
