Playing the Antisemitism Card

The antisemitism card has always been one of the great standbys when you want to stir up a little controversy, but The Huffington Post (which has been little more than an exercise in tedious self-promotion from the get-go) may find itself getting a little more notoriety than it bargained for in posting this piece of nonsense from Paul Findley. The former congressman, not the brightest bulb in the firmament, quotes Condi Rice as having said: “We have an Israel-centric foreign policy.”

Of course, Findley is perhaps not used to making his pronouncements in the Internet age and probably had no idea a bright bulb indeed named Eugene Volokh would come along to do a Google and a LEXIS search to find the context for this quote. I’m sure you will not be astonished to learn Volokh could not find the quote at all.

Now it will be interesting to see how this develops. I would doubt they do much serious editing at The Huffington Post (unless it’s of Arianna’s picture) but this quote, if it proves to be either made up or seriously out of context, would call for a strong and public retraction. We’ll see how interested in the truth they are.

UPDATE: Here’s the Condoleeza Rice that Mr. Findley finds so distressing.

There ya go, Roger. If they insist on publically humiliating themselves, the least you can do is help deliver the public!

Jun 11, 2005 - 7:15 pm 2. Nathan Lanier:

Typical. I had seen this early on Charles Johnson’s site and I was hoping more people would get involved. Settle for nothing less than a retraction.

Jun 11, 2005 - 7:16 pm 3. mrp:

Fudge. I was going to leave a pithy remark, but Dava G had already posted the same thought (and more eloquently, too).

What passes in the USA for the “left” or “progressives” have always been a pissy bunch of bigoted wankers. I guess it’s good that they don’t have any qualms about expressing their true feelings; I’d rather that they not continue to lie about it.

I’m waiting to see what Erica Jong has to say, but it may be a while. I’ll bet she doesn’t actually read the Huffington Post. Who does?

Jun 11, 2005 - 7:22 pm 6. PeterUK:

You might even say Paul Findlay was not the “Brightest filament in the bulb”.

The left seem to have some kind of political Turettes Syndrome, they are not just making shit up,this is a genuine disorder what was on those tabs all those years ago?

Increasing numbers of those of a sinister persuasion appear exist in a world where belief is reality.

Personally I’ll be glad when the mother ship gets back.

Jun 11, 2005 - 7:34 pm 7. richard mcenroe:

Well, looks like our betters (just ask them) are heading back to the “shitty little country” meme…

Jun 11, 2005 - 8:49 pm 8. Richard Nieporent:

So why would anyone be surprised that the Huffington Post would degenerate into an anti-Semitic rag? Isn’t that the standard fare for the loony left?

Jun 11, 2005 - 9:06 pm 9. Barry Dauphin:

While Findley was busy fabricating quotes and setting new standards for anti-semitism, our Secretary of State managed to play the Kennedy Center: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050612/ap_en_mu/rice_concert_3

“Rice Plays With Soprano at Kennedy Center

Secretary of State Takes to Stage for Friend Battling Rare Disease”

And her friend’s grandparents are Tom Lantos (D) representative from California and his wife Anntte. Lantos is the only Holocaust survivor ever to serve in US Congress: http://lantos.house.gov/HoR/CA12/About+Tom/A+Holocaust+Survivor/A+Holocaust+Survivor.htm

You can’t make this stuff up.

Jun 11, 2005 - 9:40 pm 10. Barry Dauphin:

Well Findley is getting a friendlier and more embellished treatment from Al-Jazeerah: http://www.aljazeerah.info/Opinion%20editorials/2005%20Opinion%20Editorials/April/27%20o/Iraq%20and%20Palestine%20are%20two%20sides%20of%20the%20same%20coin%20By%20Abdus%20Sattar%20Ghazali.htm

Al-Jazeerah indicates that he said this: He pointed out that General Anthony Zinni, for a time the presidentís special emissary to the Middle East, spoke the truth recently when he said Israel and oil are widely accepted in Washington, D.C., as the real reasons President Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq. And they quote the former rep thus: “ìAnd any close observer would know that Israel was by far the stronger of the two reasons. If our government commits acts of war, God forbid, against Iran and/or Syria, neither of which pose a threat to U.S. security, these wars will be executed mainly to benefit Israel.î

But why not quote Findley himself from his own essay: “In seeking gains for Israel they rigorously stifle dissent and intimidate the entire Congress. They defeat legislators who criticize Israel. I know. I was there for 22 years.

They have forced severe anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bias into U.S. Middle East policy for the past thirty-five years, bias that grows worse year after year.”:http://www.habtoor.com/anenemycalledapathy/p-3.htm

You guys are too hard on Huff’n'Puff. You can learn lots over there. For example, this is what passes for thinking and also goes a long way in explaining why the left is tanking.

Jun 11, 2005 - 11:19 pm 12. richard mcenroe:

Well, hell, I haven’t given Zinni any credence since it came out he was stealing money from enlisted men and their families. Nice company Findley is keeping…

Jun 11, 2005 - 11:52 pm 13. lindenen:

Did you guys read the little contretemps between Sidney Blumenthal’s son Max and Hitchens? Max tried accusing Hitchens of either anti-Semitism or Holocaust denial. I forget which, probably both. It was pathetic. The son of Sid is either a complete illiterate or a mendacious liar. I was shocked that something so poorly written and thought out actually ended up on the site. I figured they would have had some sort of editor who could point out that they shouldn’t print obvious lies, but I guess not.

Jun 11, 2005 - 11:53 pm 14. David Thomson:

“Well Findley is getting a friendlier and more embellished treatment from Al-Jazeerah: Link…”

I believe that I might have found the actual text of Paul Findley’s speech. He did not support George W. Bush in his reelection bid. On the contrary, the former Republican congressman represents the consensus view of those ìelitesî who backed John Kerry:

ìBy standing resolutely for justice for Palestinians, who are mostly Muslim, Bush would virtually end anti-American protests and strengthen moderate forces worldwide.

Will Bush liberate America from endless wars and chart a constructive, peaceful new future for our nation? If he does so promptly, he will be a shoo-in for re-election. If he does not, I will join other Republicansóthere will be many of usóin urging his defeat.î

http://www.wrmea.com/archives/April_2004/0404020.html

I am convinced that Israel would be in deep trouble had Kerry been victorious last November. Does anyone doubt that the so-called mainstream of the national Democratic Party is anti-Israel?

Jun 11, 2005 - 11:53 pm 15. lindenen:

mcenroe, what’s this about stealing money from soldiers and their families?

Jun 11, 2005 - 11:54 pm 16. uranari:

The only reason I occasionally go to Huff is for Greg Gutfeld. Though his recent stuff isn’t as insane as his earlier posts. Puts them all in their place.

As for Findley, funny how the far left and the far right see eye to eye on so many things. I’ll take the broad conservative (with some optional liberal flourishes) middle.

Jun 12, 2005 - 12:07 am 17. Old Gunny:

Richard Mcenroe:

Please explain comment about Gen Zinni stealing money from enlisted Marines. My daughter is an enlisted Marine, and I am retired. I must have missed this story in the clutter.

Jun 12, 2005 - 5:29 am 18. M. Simon:

Believe it or not there is a relationship between Paul Findley and the WTO. Ideologically. Needless to say French anti-Semites are involved. And French government funded institute.

Let me just quote a bit here:

ìBut ëthe Middle East policy of the US is made in Israel and not in Washingtoní, former US Representative Paul Findley used to say (as cited by Pascal Boniface in his latest book Towards a Fourth World War?).î

Jun 12, 2005 - 7:08 am 19. TigerHawk:

The Volokh link is up in the comments to Findlay’s post, and has been for more than two days. If Findlay were a real blogger, he would have posted a correction or a response in an update. He is not, however, a real blogger. Instead he mistakenly relies on his reputation. OK. Then recall that Findlay has been railing about the “Israeli lobby” for years.

Jun 12, 2005 - 7:13 am 20. Buddy Larsen:

“Go it alone” foreign policy is bad, but so is having a fightin’ ally in the mideast. That’s bad, too? I don’t get it, Mr. Findley.

Jun 12, 2005 - 7:42 am 21. Fresh Air:

Findley was my old Congressman, and but for his blind support of Palestinian causes at the expense of Israel, not a bad egg in Washington. The man who replaced him, Dick Durbin, became U.S. Senator. :(

However, he appears to have joined up with the Pat Buchanan wing on this Israel bashing. He was a lonely party of one back in the seventies and eighties: a Republican supporting Palestinian causes. Now he can go to dinner with George Gallaway.

I would note that the GOP effectively kicked out Buchanan for his radical views. If Findley were still in elected office he would probably face the same fate.

Jun 12, 2005 - 8:45 am 22. RBMN:

Israelis are great allies (for anybody) because, as a group, they have “NEVER AGAIN” tattooed on their hearts and on their brains and on their souls. It’s not just because they had the Old Testament first. They don’t give up, because they know what the alternative (to fighting) looks like.

Jun 12, 2005 - 8:47 am 23. Buddy Larsen:

Yes. Screw Findley, maybe we just LIKE to back small, outnumbered, living-always-on-the-edge-of-disaster, ballsy little hero-democracies. USA & Israel would be an allies regardless of religion or history. The political/ideological connection alone is plenty sufficient.

Jun 12, 2005 - 9:17 am 24. richard mcenroe:

Lindenenen, Old Gunny ó Zinni sits (or perhaps until very recently sat) on the Board of First Command, a company that has been exposed as selling garbage annuities and funds to servicemen and their families. Jason over at Iraq Now/Countercolumn has been following this story for a couple of years now.

First Command sends uses former officers as its sales force. They go onto post, in their old uniforms, to pitch their shoddy wares to the troops and their families, implying that these annuities and funds are service-approved for purchase.

Jun 12, 2005 - 9:57 am 25. Buddy Larsen:

I know zip ab/ shoddy biz & Zinni, but in my partisan way I’m not in the least surprised that one of the few Kerry-supporters in the military might have some baggage.

Jun 12, 2005 - 10:26 am 26. Buddy Larsen:

Very thoughtful update on Condi Rice, Roger. There’s something very reassuring about agreeing with the politics of our Secretary of State. Something about a foreign policy being run by a talented mind with an academic grounding in music theory. Harmony, discordance, timing, interval, chording, melody, rhythm, all that and more, also apply equally well to music.

Jun 12, 2005 - 1:37 pm 27. Doug S.:

Uranari, it doesn’t surprise me in the least when the far right and the far left synch up. It’s been about ten years or so since it first occurred to me that we no longer live in a left v. right world (i.e., the Cold War), but a world in which both extremes despise and want to make life miserable for the people in the middle, who want to enjoy the benefits of liberty and prosperity.

Jun 12, 2005 - 5:29 pm 28. markus:

Let’s see if Paul Findley can get a source. If he can’t, Huffington’s blog needs to treat it as it would treat any other poster who posts something that is incorrect. Nothing more, nothing less.

Criticizing Israel policies, criticizing AIPAC, agreeing with articles on reads in Tikkun or Findley’s Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, is not, in and of itself, evidence of antisemitism.

Anti-zionism is not anti-semitism. Anti-zionism that sees zionism as an expression of typical and uniquely Jewish behavior, or that opposes both pro-zionist and anti-zionist jews with equal fervor, on the other hand, IS antisemitic.

David Thomson — how many times do you have to make the exact same point, and how many times does someone need to correct you, before that person can also call you an idiot, without being considered a flamer or a troll?

For the unpteenth time, the Democratic Party is pro-Jewish and pro-Zionist. Jewish Americans fund over half of the party’s budget. 95%+ of the Democratic Members of Congress do whatever AIPAC asks it to do 95+% of the time.

And here’s Pelosi speaking to last month’s AIPAC convention in DC:

http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=47885

And here’s Hillary speaking at there:

http://clinton.senate.gov/~clinton/speeches/2005524910.html

Howard Dean and Harry Reid also spoke at the conference. I can’t seem to find their speeches, but suffice to say, if they said anything that Ariel Sharon wouldn’t have said himself, it would have been reported, by the “MSM”, and Roger would be discussing THAT, rather than this.

Israel has overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress, and everywhere else in Washington, save the Middle East desk at the State Department, and the homes of Findley, Buchanan, and a few others whose only trait in common is that they LACK POLITICAL POWER.

Jun 13, 2005 - 10:42 am 29. Buddy Larsen:

Markus, step back a moment and take a look at the support of the left wing of the Democratic party for Palestinian demands that under the circumstances have been an existential threat to Israel since 1946.
