Some people howled like stuck pigs when I called certain people in the media “objectively pro-fascist” in Orwell’s terminology, but I thought maybe I was understating and the “objectively” should be removed when I read this account of a “going away party” at Reuters.
Close buddies? Top terrorist Zakaria Zubeidi made a “guest appearance” in a video prepared by the staff of Reuters news agency in Israel and the Palestinian Authority as a “going away” gift for a colleague, Ynetnews has learned.
Zubeidi’s al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades have claimed responsibility for more than 300 terror acts in the last five years.
A Reuters spokeswoman confirmed the video’s existence, but said the London-based news organization is “not associated with any group or faction in any conflict.”
The screening, which occurred in a Jerusalem restaurant last March, involved the showing of a video during a private party.
“The video’s theme was what Israel would be like in 10 years,” said an Israeli government official who attended the party and viewed the video.
“All of a sudden, at the end, there is Zakaria Zubeidi, playing the head of Reuters. Zubeidi was sitting in Reuters’ Jenin office, saying he was Reuters’ chief,” the official said.
Maybe he already is. (via LGF)

Why do I have this picture stuck in my head of sycophantic Mr. Beauchamp, dime novelist, from href=”http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105695/”>Unforgiven?

Remember, if we say the wrong words they might blow us up.
Jul 15, 2005 - 10:17 am 4. Cynic:Some weeks back Israeli news told of how Zakaria Zubeidi became part of Abass’ security aparatus with the rank of what Israelis call “Tat Aluf”; equivalent of brigadier I think.
So much for Bush talking the talk.

In a L.A. Times op-ed max Boot recalled a exchange between Orwell and an anti-war poet regarding WWII. See if some of the themes and words of the Poet sound similar to what some are saying today.
Orwell, writing in the partisan review, wrote “The greater part of the very young intelligentsia are anti-war…..don’t believe in any ‘defense of democracy’ are inclined to prefer Germany to Britain and don’t feel the horror of fascism”
The pacifist poet D.S. Savage responded explaining why he “would never fight and kill for such a phantasm as British Democracy’ He saw little difference between Britain and Germany and considered both totalarian, “Germans call it National Socialism, we call it Democracy” the result is the same. This exchange was in 1942 when Hitler was at the gates of Moscow”
Savage wondered “Who is to say that a British victory will be less disatrous than a German one?” “the un;oadingof a billion tons of bombs on Germany won’t help” “Personally I do not care for Hitler” But he thought the way to resist Hitler was by not resisting him: “Whereas the rest of the nation is content with calling down obloquy on Hitlers head, we regard this as superficial. Hitler requires, not condemnation, but understanding”
Part of Orwell’s brilliant response, “The notion that you can somehow defeat violence by submitting to it is simply a flight from fact. As I have said, it is only possible to people who have money and guns between themselves and reality”

Well, I guess it doesn’t HAVE to be, officially, that is. In fact, that is the word left out of the “statement”:
“Reuders would like to make it clear that it is not OFFICIALLY associated with any group or faction in any conflict YOU JEW HATING IMPERIALIST PIGS.”
Jul 15, 2005 - 1:18 pm 8. heather:You know, that preview button is my friend.
I was being ironic. It should be “JEW LOVING.”
Sorry about that.

Thanks.
Jul 15, 2005 - 1:52 pm 10. Syl:Do you think the left side of the blogosphere would ever comment on something like this? They won’t even bother to find an anti-Bush angle. They just don’t care.
I’ve been utilizing memeorandum lately and have discovered something I already knew but was shocked anyway because it’s right there for all to see.
When an article which may be great for the Dems is commented on, it’s the Left side of the blogosphere that comments. Same the other way for the Right side. Where true controversy exists, the article is commented on by blogs of both sides.
Not a problem, and perfectly understandable because what I’m referring to above concerns domestic political issues.
Where it gets dicey and shows me the Left is totally uncurious about what is happening in the world and/or the war is that articles concerning foreign issues are rarely commented on by the Left side of the blogosphere at all! Unless there is an obvious slam Bush angle. But even then fewer Lefty blogs seem to participate than participate in commenting on domestic issues.
Then take something as important as the recent PEW poll which showed support for bin laden and suicide bombing dropping drastically in much of the muslim world and the ONLY commenters were from the right side. WTF? Perhaps a few from the Left side have weighed in by now, but it was such a glaring example.
Do they have to wait until somebody figures out an anti-Bush angle to the good news?
It’s frankly sick, apalling, and frightening. I’m pretty socially liberal and sometimes the Christian right gets on my nerves. But I listen to them and respect their opinion as their honest beliefs. But I will vote with them and take their side and not give a rip even if Bush were to stuff the SC with the most ‘insert appropriate adjective here’ judges he can find. Because I will never ever again vote for a Democrat!

The party included guests from the BBC, ITN, the Independent newspaper, and French journalists.
“They all thought the video was hilarious,” the official said. He added that only a few individuals did not seem amused during the screening.
“They were laughing; they thought it was very funny,” he said.
………….
Any bets on the punchline of their hilarious joke? “Ten years! Ha ha! Israel – Judenrein! Ha ha!”
These people make me sick.

Syl,
You describe my feelings precisely. The funny bit is that one can discuss controversial issues with people who are more (traditionally) conservative than I am. It is impossible to do so with so-called liberals. So screw them. Now that I am card carrying Republican, I fill out all sorts of questionnaires about policy issues and I feel that I have some tiny influence on party platform after all.
(Heather,
Just so you know, I have it from an impeachable source that Perveew works for Al-Queda. He is not, most emphatically, your friend.)

Jul 15, 2005 - 6:09 pm 15. onecent:I read recently that Reuters outsources heavily because they are financially hurting. A hefty percentage of their journalists/stringers are the locals. It’s reflected in the quality and the biases.
They are literally a Third World news organization with fourth rate news at this point in time.
They can’t go broke fast enough.
Jul 15, 2005 - 7:36 pm 16. Macker:So how do we make ‘em go broke faster?
