Joltin’ Bolton

A gaggle of supposedly “progressive” Democrats is continuing to oppose the nomination of John Bolton for UN Ambassador while simultaneously ignoring the massive corruption at the UN itself, which is a thousand – make that a million - times worse than any “crime” allegedly committed by the nominee. The latest Bolton “malfeasance” that has these reactionary progressives jumping up and down is that the State Department official failed to note on a form that he had been interviewed by another State Department official on the old uraniumin Niger issue. Never mind that no one was accusing Bolton of having been involved in a crime here or even having lied or that, one assumes, all such interviews are a matter of record for anyone with the slightest interest. No, this is high partisan political farce at its purest. And like most games of its sort, it is monumentally stupid, because those very people who think they are defending the UN (or something) by keeping the reform-minded Bolton out of the international organization’s corrupt and decaying halls are the very ones (not Bolton) contributing to the UN’s demise or future irrelevance.

God, at this point, I wouldn’t even care if they discovered he beat his grandma for beer money. Get him in there….

Jul 29, 2005 - 8:02 pm 2. flenser:

Presumably a recess appointment is in the works.

The infuriating aspect of this is not the “progressives”, since I expect no better from the Kerry-Kennedy-Boxer wing of the Democratic party. But what the hell is with all the so-called “moderates”, such as Nelson and Byrd, Salazar and Liberman, the other Nelson from Florida, even Hillary, who is said to be making centerist moves. How do they imagine this petty nonsense serves the country, or even their own party?

Waddaya mean future irrelevance?

Jul 29, 2005 - 8:20 pm 4. Moses Wine:

Mr. Bolton’s excuse that he “didn’t recall being interviewed by the State Department’s Inspector General” is simply not believable. How can you forget an interview about an issue so important that the United States Senate unanimously passed an amendment stating that Congress supports “the thorough and expeditious investigation by the Inspector General of the Department of State and the Inspector General of the Central Intelligence Agency into the documents … that the President relied on to conclude that Iraq had attempted to obtain uranium from Africa”? The amendment was cosponsored by the Chairmen of both the Foreign Relations Committee and the Intelligence Committee.

Jul 29, 2005 - 8:38 pm 5. Moses Wine:

I will grant that I believe it slightly more believable than John “I was never a member of that Society” Roberts who later turned out to be on the steering committee.

Jul 29, 2005 - 8:44 pm 6. Patrick Tyson:

I care not.

“Mr. Bolton’s excuse that he “didn’t recall being interviewed by the State Department’s Inspector General” is simply not believable.”

You might come up with a motive for his making a deliberate misstatemnet prior to making idiotic assertions. Keep shovelin’ Mo, we wouldn’t want anyone to have illusions concerning your intelligence.

Jul 29, 2005 - 8:50 pm 8. Captain Hate:

It’s not like he said it was a memory that was seared in him.

Is Mo the new pet?

Jul 29, 2005 - 8:53 pm 9. Moses Wine:

Interesting. I would have thought his motive would have been obvious. Think about it some. I’ll let you know in the final scene as we all gather in the conservatory.

Jul 29, 2005 - 8:54 pm 10. Moses Wine:

As I recall, it wasn’t the sex that mattered, it was the lying under oath.

Jul 29, 2005 - 9:02 pm 11. Rick Ballard:

Yeah, we couldn’t afford a chia and the rocks we tried were too intelligent.

Jul 29, 2005 - 9:05 pm 12. Captain Hate:

Ever cut butter with that wit, Mo?

Jul 29, 2005 - 9:06 pm 13. Katherine:

Patrick,

You sound positively Shakespearian :-)

I happen to agree with Roger on this and if every self righteous Democrat with a memory lapse were booted out of the Congress that vote count would be even more lopsided than it is.

The food for oil scandal is an example not only of thievery but of corruption that actually helped make a war happen and the Democrats are yawning as they keep this whole Nigerian Bolton Biden political farce alive.

I doubt if Bolton thought of the conversation as an investigation at the time. Someone called him and asked him questions, he answered, there was a memo he [unlike some people] moved on. It is not worth making a federal case out of . In fact it is anal, not to mention petty and partisan.

The moderates are obviously being intimidated by the leftists who actually hold the power in the Democratic Party. They are now marginalized figures who perhaps should seriously consider turning Republican. This is especially true regarding Joseph Lieberman. I cannot, for the life of me, comprehend why he has yet to make the move. He is very safely ensconced in Connecticut. What is he waiting for?

Jul 30, 2005 - 5:04 am 17. Lola:

Keep in mind that UN pow-wow that is supposed to take place in mid September. How is it going to look when there’s nobody sitting n the US seat? Seems the Donks don’t quite realize that, or they’re hoping to beat Bush over the head about that while not owning up to the fact that they caused this situation to happen. I expect we’ll see an announcement Monday or so.

Jul 30, 2005 - 5:14 am 18. PeterUK:

This Moses Wine is obviuosly no a real fictional character, nobody gathers in the conservatory,it is either the library or the study, the pearl handled revolver is never kept in the conservatory.

Roberts can not possibly be guilty since the accepted modus operandi of the guilty party is to secret the documents in his nether garments.

This Moses Wine has dropped a bit of a gazebo.

Jul 30, 2005 - 5:22 am 19. Rick Ballard:

Lola,

Even if Bolton is not recess appointed (and I think he will be) we’ll have an envoy in the chair to ‘just say no’ to Don Kofi and his posse. I hope that Coleman takes up Hyde’s bill in early September and makes a push to get it passed prior to the Kofi clatch.

The Donks can bray ’til their tails fall off but this caravan just keeps on moving.

Gentlefolks,

The whole Bolton kerfuffle is a personal vendetta by Christopher Dodd (D-CT). The politics of the Northeast are particularly unseemly.

Wait a minute, beating one’s grandma for beer money is a bad thing?

Jul 30, 2005 - 6:31 am 22. Kyda Sylvester:

…the pearl handled revolver is never kept in the conservatory.

Why is that? Some sort of English etiquette thing? Too humid? Guns and music don’t mix?

Bolton–recess appointment–early next week. Dubya says “bite me”.

Told ‘ya we shoulda sprung for the chia.

Jul 30, 2005 - 6:45 am 23. PeterUK:

Kyda,

Here a conservatory is also a large greenhouse structure where one can sit in semi-arborial splendour.Besides the parakeets are allergic to cordite.More a practical thing really and there should be at least one smoke free space in the house.

Jul 30, 2005 - 7:15 am 24. Kyda Sylvester:

Yeah, Peter, I know about the greenhouse thing (thus the “too humid?” comment–I’m not a complete provincial, ya know). That’s you English all right, ever practical.

Hmmm. Are they then not actually worse than the delusional ‘true believers’? Seeing and knowing that something is totally screwed up and deliberately deciding not only to do NOTHING, but indeed to actively contribute to the disaster is indefensible.

Nancy Pelosi has the benefit of being a clueless and partisan loon. What exactly is Hillary’s excuse ?

In my very jaundiced view, searching for ‘moderates’ in the current Democratic Party is akin to searching for ‘moderate’ Muslims in Saudi Arabia. Very labour intensive and ultimately not very satisfying.

Mr.Lieberman is a true glutton for punishment, but every day that he ’supports’ the current status he loses just a little more dignity. Sad really.

I have to laugh every time someone calls Robert Byrd a moderate.

Sure it is.

Anything more?
