Engage with Engage

That’s a new website from the UK keeping its eye on the anti-Semitism of today’s “intelligentsia.” They write: Engage was set up in response to the Association of University Teacher’s decision to take steps towards an academic and cultural boycott of Israel.

Roger, here is an interesting event that occured between anti-war and anti-israel protestors.

JAMAL KANJ, a fiery Palestinian from a group called Al-Awda, takes the podium. ?We Palestinians,? he begins, ?have been subjected to GENOCIDE at the hands of the Israelis for generations.” He rants on. “In 1948, they forced us out of our homes, and today we must DRIVE THE JEWS FROM PALESTINE!?

Suddenly, a middle-aged man wearing a black ?F the President? T-shirt rushes the stage, screaming at Kanj, ?I?m TIRED of this CRAP! You people keep bringing this up! This is supposed to be an ANTI-WAR rally, not an ANTI-ISRAEL rally!?

Roger:

There is quite a bit of whinning on the lefty blogs about the more conservative blogs highlighting the Stalinist and anti-Israel ramblings of the A.N.S.W.E.R. fanatics. My suggestion is if you don’t want people pointing out that among the sponsors and speakers at the event is a group that thinks North Korea is the legitimate government of Korea and is a Stalinist communist group don’t allow them to be a part of your organization. And you may want to tell the posterchild of the movement to stop parroting their propaganda lines. When I first read her complaining that the media was not paying enough attention to her and covering that stupid hurricane thing I assumed that it had to be a joke, that no one could be that self absorbed. The transformation from grieving mother to preening camera hound happened fast, didn’t it? When does she get her reality show and how long before she mud wrestles Amorosa in a reality show olympics?

Engage is not quite the unmitigated benefit you write it up as. I speak as someone who was involved in the AUT boycott debate in London, and I was one of the five out of seventy people who got to speak at that debate who had anything at all favourable to say about Israel.

Engage’s line is virulently anti-occupation. One of their leading lights describes Sharon as a “vicious ethnic nationalist”. Its founders are all aligned with a Trotskyist groupuscule, the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty

http://www.answers.com/topic/alliance-for-workers-liberty

I have written about one of their currently supported lines, “friendship” and “solidarity” ties with Palestinian academic groups here:

http://adloyada.typepad.com/adloyada/2005/09/autnatfhe_merge.html

They also strongly support the potentially disastrous merger of AUT (the prestige university union) with NATFHE (the union for the community colleges and less prestigious universities. NATFHE is much more strongly anti-Israel than NATFHE, and if the merger goes ahead, more anti-Israel action is on the cards for our universities. I have begun to write about what is at stake here:

http://adloyada.typepad.com/adloyada/2005/09/its_really_all_.html
