It’s hard to know for sure from Sen. Harry Reid’s cryptic comments (via PJM) on the possible death of Osama bin Laden in a Pakistan earthquake whether the Senator was working from secret intelligence or from media reports. But whatever the case, the Senator has proven himself again “the very model of the modern Major Political Hack” (to mutilate Gilbert & Sullivan) – extremely high on partisanship and extremely low on brains (a match made in heaven).

1. Jamie Irons:Roger,
PowerLine links to the John Fund article which notes:
On the other hand, if Mr. Reid’s public speculation [about bin Laden's possible death in the Pakistani earthquakes] proves groundless, it only embarrasses the U.S. and contributes to enemy morale. Here’s hoping Al Qaeda figures aren’t soon appearing on Al Jazeera television chortling about the clueless Mr. Reid…
Well, if it hurts the US war effort, then wouldn’t Reid himself chortle, “Hey, it’s all good…”?

I agree that Reid’s comments are fairly stupid, but all I can muster is a yawn at the moment. Although it ought to matter what the Senate Minority Leader says on such issues, it doesn’t. In the short term perhaps that is helpful or expedient for the WoT. In the long term it is not helpful for the democracy.
When a person in such an important position as Senate Minority Leader diminishes the value of that position by behaving in such an unserious way, it doesn’t hurt the war effort as much as hurt the institution of the Senate. Although they can be such blowhards, our system of government needs a responsible Senate. When Reid takes talking points from the Michael Moore’s of the world, he cheapens an important institution. And sullying something is much easier to accomplish than establishing and maintaining value and respectibility.

It may be a conscious attempt to hurt the war effort, but then as Napoleon said “in politics, stupidity is not a handicap.”
Nov 30, 2005 - 8:01 am 4. Camp Runamok:One would hope that Harry realizes just how silly this makes him look in front of the good people of Nevada who may well be experiencing some buyer remorse for their choice last fall.
Wishing/praying for Osama’s death by violent natural causes sounds very like our WOT enemies calling on allah to “destroy the ground under their feet” or other childish nonsense.
Nov 30, 2005 - 8:40 am 5. Always right:I totally agree with Barry Dauphin at November 30, 2005 07.
Watching C-SPAN, it is just hard not to view the Dem Leadership as obstructionists. What positive contribution(s) they have brought to the table recently? Reid? Pelosi? JfKerry? Where are those famous “plans” from the Kerry/Edwards team? Why wait till 2008 to put out some plans to fix the problems we are facing today?
At least GOP side seems to want to get something done (I know, with ulterior motive to get re-elected). Nobody really cares about Bushís visions (ownership society, accountability, etc). Just seems to me that both houses look more and more like UN debating club. Hopefully they wonít turn out to be just as useless.

I have no hesitation to declare the national Democratic Party as an enemy of civilization. A vote for one of their candidates is generally, on a practical basis, a vote for the terrorists. Are Democrats like Harry Reid deliberately damaging their own country? No, not in the least. My key qualifier is ìon a practical basis.î These individuals are so blinded by the radical leftists nostrums of the Daily Kos and Moveon.org crowds that they are utterly incapable of thinking logically. This renders them useless and even destructive regarding our efforts to win the war on terror.
Also, are you enjoying our booming economy? If so, you must do your part to make sure that the Democrats and their liberal Republican comrades donít destroy it! They be our greatest threat to both our physical safety and economy vitality.
Nov 30, 2005 - 10:06 am 7. Charlie (Colorado):Wow, Jamie, you’re actually more cynical about these people than I am.
Sadly, I’m afraid this is another one of those times to choose stupidity over malice: Members of Congrefs have historically had a little trouble with keeping their mouths shut about classified stuff, with Senators being worse than House members. Cf, when Orrin Hatch blew the fact that UBL’s satphone calls were being intercepted by NSA.
Jim Geraghty had an interesting summary of some of these leaks in NRO in 2003.
