My guess is if Kuttner had been around back then he would not have liked Lincoln anymore than he does Bush.

He probably would have been a Copperhead Democrat who thought Lincoln was a cross between a dictator and a hillbilly.

My point was that Lincoln’s construction of the war powers of the commander-in-chief belies much of the silly commmentary on Bush by liberals like Kuttner. I would enjoy reading Kuttner on Lincoln’s defiance of Chief Justice Taney’s order to free John Merryman on the ground that Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus was unconstitutional. Lincoln respectfully disagreed and ignored Taney’s order. I hope Kuttner will get around to writing such a column someday; he might learn something if he studies up enough to write it.

BTW this is coming via a G4 IBook. Great laptop. Only complaint be careful with DVDs. They have a tendency of getting themselves trapped in the slot drive.

Tip. Unfortunately no pinhole for emergency disk removal. Straighten a paperclip. Make a 1/16″ 90 degree bend at the end. Insert in drive above DVD. Hook the center of the DVD. Hit F12 or other command to eject disk and pull. Word is DVD brush comes loose and blocks door trapping DVD.

If he is a typical leftist, an adolescent narcissist in an adult body, he will think you have lost your mind and dismiss you because any other explanation would be too threatening to his sense of himself. The last thing the narcissist can afford is to question his own assumptions; they have a poor ability to differentiate between their assumptions and their sense of self. In other words, they confuse what they believe with who they are.

I suspect he doesn’t think, period. There is legitimate room for disagreement whether the invasion of Iraq was a proper move in response to Islamic terrorism. However, there are elections in the US, with consequences. The Kerry/Dean Democrats have been repeatedly and decisively rebuked by the electorate. The self annointed elites don’t get their way because, well, they are right and everybody else is wrong.

Bush can’t run for re-election. The Dems and the MSM are proving themselves deranged and irrelevant with their reflexive opposition to everything Bush does.

To begin any journey one has to be willing to take a first step. Some folks just never get to that point or, through fear, simply retreat after an initial shift lest they become uncomfortable.

I already know what (now) ex-friends think of the changes in my thinking and attitudes. And that includes my family and ex.

It ain’t pretty.

But it’s okay. I have new friends.

Maybe it’s easier for some than for others, I don’t know. But I moved around a lot when growing up. I loved meeting new people and making new friends in a new state and new school. I was sad at leaving old friends behind, but the thought of new ones kept me looking ahead instead of being sad at what I was leaving behind.

That doesn’t mean I agree with my new friends on everything–I certainly do not. But I listen. My old friends won’t even listen.

Funny thing about the Copperheads. They got their name from their habit of cutting the head off a penny and wearing it on their lapel in order to protest President Lincoln’s war policy.

In the 1860’s, the penny had a portrait of an Indian.

If today’s Copperheads did the same thing, they’d be wearing President Lincoln’s portrait.
