betsybounds:
according to your old geography prof, muslims believe that everything is predetermined. well, i understand calvinists believe (or used to believe) the same thing. why are the cultures so different?
if i remember, max weber suggested in 'the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism' that protestants strove for worldly success to prove to themselves, even more than to the world, that they were among the predestined elect. is there, can there be, such a thing in islam? looking forward to comments from calvinists, muslims and anyone else.

Zawahiri may have "dodged the bullet" or the bomb as the case may be, but I understand that one of his sons wasn't so lucky and numbered among the 18 dead in the Damadola missile strike.

I suggest that knocking off 5 significant Al-Qaeda operatives plus their host who was well known to Pakistani authorities for his A-Q/Taliban ties was what prompted bin Laden's "peace offer" and Zawahiri's latest pronouncement, that and the way Zarqawi has alienated Sunni tribespeople in Iraq.

What's the difference between Punxsutawny Phil (the groundhog) and Zawahiri? Punxsutawny Phil can stick his head out of his hole, see his shadow and not have to worry about being blown up by a Hellfire missile fired from a Predator drone. Just sayin'.

Your right Roger. Bush, or Rice nor Rumsfield are hiding. They all have been to Iraq since the war,
they all have to answer live questions from the press. They don't have to dress like women (Rice excepted) to go places. He said he is with the masses, then he should be able to film where he wants to, and talk to the press.
Why does the press give them a free pass on these points.

I am reminded of my geography professor at the University of Houston some years ago. He taught that Islam is a fatalistic religion, holding that the future is fixed. It's that belief, coupled with the Moorish occupation of Spain, that is the origin of the present-day Spanish belief that "Que sera, sera--whatever will be, will be." Dr. Coffman told a story of his travel to Egypt, where he was driven around Cairo in a cab by a mad cabbie who drove as though there were no rules of the road. When Dr. Coffman protested, the cabbie waved his hands and cried, "Oh sir, oh sir! If Allah wills that we die today, nothing we do can prevent it! And If Allah wills that we not die today, nothing we do can kill us!" It was a humorous, and instructive, tale. Dr. Zawahiri seems, not surprisingly, to have a similar belief.

Well,

I think singling out doctors is going a bit overboard. You could as well single out academics, bohemians, artists, or educated people in general. And, *ahem*, it strikes me that Jews from Russia and Eastern Europe had an unhealthy attachment to the totalitarian communist regimes. Political fancies come and go. I think we in the US are fortunate that we kind of got stuck in the Scottish Enlightenment an so missed out on many of the modern innovations in political thought.

Even so, it is curious that Marx's The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napolean was first published in New York and May Day was initiated in Chicago by the AFL back in 1886. But as Europe went on to embrace totalitarian doctrines the US lagged behind. Thank God.

ChÈ was an MD, no?

... and bbbustard, could you try to think of something even more stupid to say? We've been having a little informal pool for the dumbest moonbat, and I think you might have a chance if you just tried a little harder.

Hilarious Post. What I don't understand is why you are not demanding that Bush discontinue Secret Service Protection. Don't you think that in one of his many chats with God, Bush has discussed his own demise?

Roger,

If you only knew the half of how livid with rage "doctors" like this make real physicians, like myself!

I would give anything to have five mintes to tear this bastard's heart out with my bare hands.

By the way, you forgot to include the sainted Che, he whose posters adorned the walls of so many students, in my long past college days, and can still be seen even now.
