Attention, Hollywood!

Your new status symbol is here – a $55,000 hybrid that does 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds. [Hey, but you get a tax credit for energy efficiency.-ed. Right. I forgot.]

UPDATE: Were keys to this car here? If so, someone got a deal.

MORE: “Bobos in Priuses” by Judd Magilnick. [Talk is cheap. I bet your next car is a hybrid.-ed. You're probably right.]

Hm.

I might have to start taking hybrids seriously, instead of being annoyed whenever one wanders out of the ‘hybrid lane’* on the freeway.

This reminds me of last night’s “South Park” episode. I only caught the last 10 minutes or so but South Park was facing impending doom because “Smug Clouds” from driving hybrids were about to collide with the smug cloud from George Clooney’s academy award speech. I especially liked the part about “San Francisco was sucked up its own asshole.” Gotta catch the full episode.

I think high-performance hybrids like this will contribute to changing the image of the technology and making it attractive to a broader market.

And just wait till cars based on ultracapacitors hit the market.

Good post Roger,

The only way to really WIN this war on terror must constantly be brought up until the masses buy hybrid out of guilt. Watch GM, Ford and Daimler build and rehire out of the loyalty craze driven by the desire of loyalists to drive the ME oil economy into the dirt. This is capatilistic agitprop at its best and most valuable moment. (And for those of you that are offended by the use of the word “agitprop” – wake up, look around…)

Larry J,

After cleaning up the coffee on the keyboard (mucus is tough to clean… did you get the visual?), I think that you may have hit upon something that I didn’t consider about this post. The issue is not to make it the Smug Cloud purchase, but the anti Smug Cloud purchase. Make this the “Screw Smug Hollywood” purchase. And no, I’m not a marketing puke/person.

Does all this mean, that when I’m looking retirement in the face, I won’t be able to have my Corvette Convertible to drive up Pacific Coast Highway with my few hairs blowing in the wind?

And the funny thing about special Prius lane is: the main way these cars get their good economy ratings is by recovering energy lost in braking. So, if they’re in a lane without stop-and-go traffic, their relative efficiency isn’t as good as it would be if they were in with the common sort.

For a constant vehicle mix, it could probably be shown that having special lanes for hybrids actually reduces overall fuel economy. (Though this probably isn’t true if you believe the existence of the lanes encourages more people to buy the hybrids)

I prefer fluxcapacitors in stylin’ DeLoreans.
