He did it his way. Boy, did he.

MS NBC said he was 88.

Are there any other examples of an author who played his own signature character in the movies or TV?

“It was easy.”

One of the greatest ending lines of a book.

A big man and a Big Life. Vaya con dios, Mickey.

You know, it comes to me that if I had just paid attention to what Spillane knew about women, I’d be a much richer man today, but I’d live in my pick-up truck.

Jul 17, 2006 - 10:35 pm 6. David Thomson:

Mickey Spillane never lived in the New York City area past his early childhood. Ironically, Aaron Copland composed such delights as Appalachian Spring, Fanfare for the Common Man, and Billy the Kid while never leaving his New York apartment.

Uh, actually, David, Copland taught at Black Mountain College near Boone, NC — a fascinating experiment, by the way.

I find no evidence whatsoever to support this most peculiar assertion. Do you have any?

Great story about Spillane:

Late in life he goes to his publisher’s offices in New York. He says he wants to see some Michael Korda-level muckety-muck. The receptionist, younger than almost all of Spillane’s books, asks his name. “Mickey Spillane,” he answers. It obviously means nothing to her and she says, politely, “May I tell him who you are?” Spillane replies, “Tell him it’s the guy who bought you this fucking building.”
