In the wake of the embarrassing Silvestri affair, you will excuse me if I suspect Senator Bill Nelson (D-FLA) was clueless about the history and policies of the Syrian Baathists when he met today with President Bashar Assad. Nelson informed us: “Assad clearly indicated the willingness to cooperate with the Americans and or the Iraqi army to be part of a solution” in Iraq.
And Nelson believed him?
Now, Senator Nelson, count of ten… what is Hama? (answer: here)
I wonder if Nelson even knows who Rafik Harari is and what Assad’s cronies had to do with his demise. The idea that you could expect Assad to deal honestly is obscene.

1. ShoreMark:I’m not exactly sure why the Dems are attracted to Syria; Jay Rockefeller also paid a visit before the war to let Assad know what he perceived Bush to be up to ahead of time.
That elected Dems are this naive, scares me. But I’m resigned to the fact that until they are properly scared of the threats themselves that this crap will continue.
I guess it has to, as 9/11 wasn’t enough. I just hope it’s not too late once they wake up, and that not too many more of us have to die here on the mainland first.
Dec 13, 2006 - 7:42 pm 2. Godzilla:And that role involves smooching it up with despicable dictators? Hmmm… I thought that job belonged to the MSM.
I’m not surprised that Kerry’s going to go there. That’s right up his alley. He’s due for another gaffe anyway.
Dec 13, 2006 - 8:00 pm 3. Barrett:The naivety of the Dems stems from their misguided belief that they can actually change the minds and motives of people like Assad. It’s a complete fanatasy land that the liberals live in.
I can’t remember the name of one leading British politician who said that WWII could have been averted if he only had the opportunity to talk to Hitler. Hello?!
Evil people exist in the world. No amount of talking or psychotherapy is going to change them. That’s why murderers are locked up. Are you going to tell me that all Jeffrey Dahlmer needed was some therapy? Does anyone really believe that the President of Iran is going to “listen” to reason?
Assad, the Iranian leadership, al-Sadr and their ilk are all congenital liars. Power is what matters and the death of innocent civilians is but a means to an end. Do the daily events in Iraq come to mind?
In fact, there is an Islamic word (that I can’t spell, but has a couple of g’s or y’s in the middle) where the concept is that it’s okay to lie if it causes the advancement of Islam. In fact, you can have a signed contract and there is no moral or legal obligation to follow it if it advances Islam. So these lunatics can somehow hide behind and justify all of this via the Koran. Hmmmmmmm. Let me think real hard.
Okay, I get it. You can’t believe a #@&%!*^ word and they are morally and metaphysically bankrupt.
Dec 13, 2006 - 9:12 pm 4. Lem:Senator Nelson boasts proudly that he is doing the things necessary to keep us dependant on foreign oil.
… a major victory over the oil industry…. The legislation included a proposal negotiated by Nelson and Martinez that creates a no-drilling zone extending 125-miles off the Panhandle and 235-miles off Tampa Bay and much of the rest of the state’s West coast, through the year 2022.

BTW, I believe that had Sen. Nelson pulled that Syria stunt during Lincoln’s presidency, facing similar foes, the senator would have been thrown in jail.

Dec 13, 2006 - 9:22 pm 5. Lem:Wait a minute. Where was Rove during Senator Johnson’s press conference? Where was Chaney?
We need to launch an investigation.
We are in the middle of a cue-de-ta; Rove is once again trying to steal the results of an election by putining a senator and installing Chaney.
These Republicans know only the senate can save Bush from impeachment. They allready put a new chief Justice in there and got Sandra Day O’Connor out of the way.
Come on people, it all adds up.
Dec 14, 2006 - 7:30 am 6. ElMondo:I’ve said it before elsewhere and I’ll say it again: Since when is more Syrian and Iranian involvement desireable?
Dec 14, 2006 - 7:45 am 7. LarryD:There’s also the fact that a lot of these people are narcissists, and authoritarianism is a common trait of narcissists.
In other words, they’d like to be dictators themselves, and so they fawn and suck up to real dictators like Fidel and Assad.
