Joe’s Byline

Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s oped in the WaPo today is worth reading as an exercise in statesmanship. Interesting too are the words he uses to describe himself at the bottom of the piece:

The writer is an Independent Democratic senator from Connecticut.

Bravo.

Sending more troops will be as unpalatable as the Nixon pardon.
But in the long term, same as the pardon, sending the troops will turn out to the right call.

“In Baghdad and Ramadi, I found that it was the American colonels, even more than the generals, who were asking for more troops.”

Naturally, since the generals would be fired if they voiced that concern, as some did in 2003.

Rumsfeld’s policy even to the end, his farewell memo saying “go minimalist.”

Fine, but let’s hope we don’t have any Westmorelands at Brass Row. It’s beginning to look that way.

Joe’s byline? I guess some people never learn.

JL explained it this way to Tim Russert, according to Nicole Stockdale at the Dallas Morning News:

MR. RUSSERT: So you’ll be Senator Joe Lieberman, I/D, Connecticut.

SEN. LIEBERMAN: Yeah, we checked with history and actually in the late 70s Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia listed himself as an Independent Democrat. You got to go back to the mid-19th century to find the last Independent Democrat.

Some of Stockdale’s commenters are not impressed:

Here in Connecticut we also had Lowell Weicker, Independent Jackass Senator.
