Here’s a good one: “Chinese Lawmaker Wants Starbucks Ousted“. I saw this copied verbatim on Drudge (not surprisingly) and rushed over to read, assuming this meant a massive attack on an American business throughout China.
Not at all. It should read “Chinese Lawmaker Wants Starbucks Ousted from the Forbidden City.” This is a totally different thing. Having visited the Forbidden City in the late Seventies, I was astonished they would have one there. It would be like planting a Starbucks in the middle of the Roman Coliseum. Tacky in the extreme. Frankly, I’m with the lawmaker on this one. People can walk across the street for their lattes. I’m sure there are plenty available.

well, there may not be a Starbucks in the Coliseum, but there is a bar in the Vatican.
Starbucks here in Asia is an outpost for tech savvy students and expats. In some ways, it’s like the outdoor cafes in Paris: A place for ideas to be discussed (Starbucks usually has outside and inside tables).
If they have tourists, they need restaurants and restrooms. Better Starbucks than McDonalds. But if they really want to go “Asian”, they could allow Jollibee to set up shop.

I swear… one month in the Philippines made me sick of seeing that damn sign everywhere. Either them or their Chowking version… they seem more damn common than 7-Eleven, Village Pantry, and Bigfoot combined! Remember that Simpson’s episode where the mall was nothing but Starbucks! That’s Jollibee!!!!
