Evidently there was some minor consternation in the otherwise seemingly-unflappable Hillary Campaign Camp over her gaffe the other day over illegal alien drivers’ licenses. She obviously fumbled out of fear of coming out on the unpopular side of a contentious issue, but in the process demonstrated what we already knew – that she isn’t as good as her husband under fire. Bill was one of the best in difficult situations. Sure, he bordered on the ludicrous when he made his famous statement about the “definition of is,” but he was under a lot more pressure at the time. Hillary could have slid through this one a lot more gracefully, which should worry her handlers. She may still be a slam-dunk (or nearly) for the nomination, but she will have a bit more of a problem in The Big Show. Giuliani, especially, may prove extremely difficult for her. So far he seems much better on his feet than Hillary is – and he has plenty of experience. The other leading Republican possibilities – Thompson and Romney, even McCain – may also give Clinton more than she bargained for. If I were a Democratic strategist, I’d be worried, especially with the news from Iraq improving to the degree that even the LATimes can’t hide it.

1. dclydew:Agreed on all counts… love him or hate him, Bill Clinton is quite possibly one of the best politicians we’ve seen (from a technical perspective, not necessarily policies etc).
Nov 1, 2007 - 2:29 pm 2. Ray Zacek:Hillary Clinton isn’t likeable, and isn’t trusted, which is why she draws high negatives in polling; she’s a poor speaker, tending toward the shrill; and no, she can’t think under fire and apparently neither she or her staff appreciate these acts of lese majeste, such as Russert asking her a difficult question of the type routinely asked of other politicians. If she is elected it will be because voters want Bill Clinton back in the White House and are willing to vote for her to get him and another “co-presidency.”

If Senator Clinton gets the nomination, however, she will be extremely stale by election day, and is not likable to begin with. The war, of course, is NOT going well for the ‘Crats at all, and those cut-and-run soundbites should come back to haunt them. Gen. Petraeus may return for a tickertape parade just before the election… The odds should contract to 50-50 over the next year, or even worse for the Democrats, and we could easily see another Republican president follow President Bush.
Nov 1, 2007 - 6:56 pm 4. Neo:Will al Qaeda members in the USA get their own cards under the Clinton/Spitzer plan ? Proper identification would clearly entitle them to Geneva Convention status that is currently denied.
What about Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah ?
For that matter will there be vanity cards for Sandinistas, Black Panthers, Tupamaros, Basque separatists, Viet Minh, Bosnians, Bohemians, Nihilists, Tamil Tigers, Ulster Unionists, Nazis, neo-Nazis, Dominionists, Communists, Boxers, Janjaweed, Fedayeen, Underground Railroaders, Vegans, Dead Heads, and Earth First-ers ?
Since the comprehensive dhimmi-facation package hasn’t been passed by the Congress, the states must step in and take up the matter on their own.
