The closest analogy to them in the commercial sales field is those resort sales deals, where people go to get a free vacation and are subjected to a couple of days of sales harangues encouraging them to buy a swampfront condo, or whatever. The average university professor of course is not a great salesman, and indeed would probably starve as a commissioned salesperson, but the closed environment, over 4 to 8 years, is probably effective for the same reasons as the resort sales approach.
