Happy Father’s Day, Norman Simon

My father Norman Simon died over twenty years ago. A doctor, he was on the way to treat a patient at eleven o’clock at night and succumbed to an aneurysm before his car got out of the garage. A man of great intellectual curiosity and human concern, he has been with me every day since.

My heart goes out to you Roger (though I am sure your father was very proud of you). Your dad left a great legacy. Remeber though that you are also a father and I hope you get to shine in their reflected light.

I read this just after I called my 88 year old dad and I know just how lucky I am. If I may brag, my dad (a physicist) raised two physicists and a geneticist. Not a bad legacy. And his youngest granddaughter is going to college this year and plans on going into the family business.

I, too, am one of the fortunate. Still have my dad (just shy of 87) – he’s in pretty darn good shape – and he has been one of “the best dads” since the day I was born.

From what I know about you, however, Roger – your dad is with you all the time – and the best of him, too.

The top dads bequeath that to us – don’t they?
