How is it that when an area goes from majority black to majority hispanic it's a loss of culture, a loss of identity? Same types of stories were told when MLK-Drew Hospital was going under, how it was because of the influx of poor MediCal and uninsured hispanics going there, ignoring how that a good number of blacks that used the same facilities (when they had to-Killer King is the name my co-workers that live in the area called it) were in the same economic boat. This kind of demographics change happens all the time and all the LA Times does is bemoan it like it's a bad thing... well maybe the new people aren't reading the LA Times so for them it is.

"Life in Los Angeles has gotten progressively worse and more anonymous..."

Not just LA. Even here in Fort Worth, "Where the West begins" as Will Rogers said, it's increasingly generic. The western tradition is weakening; it's just one big suburb--chain restaurants, chain stores, traffic jams--in the middle of Texas heat.

Which is okay for a lot of people, because some like it hot.
