Of Ayatollahs, the CIA, Pajamas Media and Drudge

Pajamas Media and some of its sites slowed down this morning because of a Drudge link to our article from “Reza Khalili,” a former US intelligence agent inside Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.  I also interviewed this man who is now living undercover in US, working on a book.  A transcript of our interview is here.

So my weekend was filled with hocus-pocus giving me new appreciaton of Seymour Hersh. [No, don't say that.-ed.  I was kidding.]  It is difficult, however, to ascertain truth in what you are being told by people “coming in from the cold”, in part because they do not know.  They only see part of the truth themselves.  No one sees it all.  I could go all epistemological here, but you get that point. I imagine that’s one reason it takes so long to debrief these people. We will be further “debriefing” Mr. Khalali.

Hmm, I believe the Baathist regime in Syria is dominated by the Alawites, who are/were an heretical Shiite sect. The heresy is that Ali is held to be divine, but the past tense is because a special dispensation was arranged whereby some Hezbollah related Ayatollah declared them legitimate.

yes, exactly! Although a wet cloth and a gallon jug appears to help some.

Real interrogation, real analysis, means getting information, looking at it, comparing it to other sources, testing it, looking for places you can falsify it, and then going back.

Very interesting interview.
Did you find him to be credible?

Basically, yes. But as I indicated above, it’s difficult for people to know the whole picture themselves. That said, his overall views seem accurate.

Exactly what did Mr. Khalil say that hasn’t been published before? I read nothing new.

Jul 8, 2008 - 5:40 pm 6. Roger L Simon:

You are right, Tessa. Most of it is familiar, but is here attested to by someone from the inside, who served in the Revolutionary Guard. That has weight, in my view.
