I started this post in a hammock in front of the cottage we are renting on the North Shore of Kauai, just south-east of Tunnels Beach (if you’re a Kauai maven), but the squinting from the sunlight bouncing off the Pacific got too much for me and I had to come inside. This gave me a chance to surf the Internet for the first time in a couple of days to discover the headline Gallup: 9-Point Lead [for Obama] After World Tour.
Oh, well. After a morning of snorkeling with the butterfly fish, it doesn’t bother me so much. Maybe if Obama wins I’ll leave the country–hey, it’s the Hollywood thing in reverse–and live out my Gauguin fantasies. Of course, I’m a happily married man, so I’d be going with my wife (hence no vahines) but the siren song of getting away has me in its grip. Have a good vacation, if you’re having one. I’m going to try to enjoy mine.
BTW, I watched some guys kite-surfing in a heavy wind this afternoon. Amazing.

I think that people know the press is making it easy for Obama, but they are falling for it anyway. I think Americans really don’t care what Europeans think, but the sight of the crowds has an irresistible if short term appeal. It is like watching Princess Di run for office.
The whole Iraq situation is more complicate. McCain has said time and again that conditions must dictate policy. Obama has said out by the middle of 2010, no matter what. Maliki has said he likes a timeline if it is flexible and he is leaning more toward Dec 31st, 2010. In other words the last day of 2010. And then I heard yesterday that Obama wants to leave a residual force in Iraq on a purely conditional basis. It seems both candidates are going in the same direction.
With one glaring exception: Left to Obama Saddam Hussein would still be filling mass graves in Iraq. Left to Obama Maliki would not be the PM. And left to Obama we would have left Iraq in chaos and defeat.

Here is a little taste.
What Obama does not seem to understand is that the Brandenburg Gate is something you earn. President Ronald Reagan earned the right to speak there because his relentless pressure had brought the Soviet empire to its knees and he was demanding its final “tear down this wall” liquidation. When President John F. Kennedy visited the Brandenburg Gate on the day of his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech, he was representing a country that was prepared to go to the brink of nuclear war to defend West Berlin.
Senator Obama’s self-congratulatory European/Iraq tour is merely another marketing ploy designed to make him “look” more presidential – without ever actually having done anything that is Presidential. So just flying around a bunch of foreign countries is supposed to give him foreign policy street cred? Not unlike sitting in Rev. Wright’s church for 20 years was supposed to give him Chicago street cred? Got it.
Instead of doing his American Idol victory lap, dragging the three biggest news anchors in tow to worship at his feet, why doesn’t he consent to do a town hall meeting or two and face Senator McCain? You know – talk to the American people….
A good friend said to me today, a cruise ship is slow to turn. I’m still waiting for all those aboard this particular Titanic to change course.

And you don’t have to worry about living on an island since the seas will start receding.
