Otherwise how to explain her prancing around to the brain dead “Bush is Hitler” meme, but this time with McCain as bloodthirsty dictator. It plays right into the “Obama is a witless celebrity” theme the McCain campaign has been employing so successfully. More likely Madonna doesn’t know or care… But what if she was a secret pro-McCain person? Unlikely, of course. But scuttlebutt in Hollywood… and this time it’s pretty reliable… is that Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr. are. Not that it matters. I think the public is so bored with the political opinions of entertainment personalities, their eyes are rolling back in their heads.
UPDATE: If I were in the Obama camp, this would make me nervous.

1. Oziripus:At the end of your statement, as your blog is formatted, there are “Read” and “Comments” links/buttons/whatever they’re called.
“Read” implies there is more to read, at least I’ve become familiar with such at other blogs, but here it takes one only to Comments, i.e., there’s nothing more to read.
Why “Read”?
Aug 25, 2008 - 9:18 am 2. Roger L Simon:It’s a holdover from longer posts. We’ll try to get it fixed. Rather busy around here.
Aug 25, 2008 - 9:56 am 3. heather:Robert Downey Jr is one of my FAVORITE actors. I figure the scuttlebut arises from his remark that – after his time in durance vile – he is no longer in love with the downtrodden bad guys. As to Angelina, she has said some very intelligent things about Iraq.
None of this means either of them will vote any other way than Democratic.
I have a friend who is a Hillary supporter, and very angry with Obama. But she will never vote for a Republican…
Aug 25, 2008 - 10:02 am 4. LSD:Madonna who?
(Everytime someone, somewhere, says that, her arthritis flares up.)
Aug 25, 2008 - 10:53 am 5. Roger L Simon:Heather, trust me… they are voting for McCain.
Aug 25, 2008 - 10:55 am 6. Eric J:They’re only voting for McCain because they don’t want someone prettier than they are in the White House.
Aug 25, 2008 - 11:01 am 7. Lem:Reports of earlier support for Obama have been greatly exaggerated.
Aug 25, 2008 - 11:26 am 8. Don Kenner:Perhaps taking the roll of Dagny Taggart in the adaptation of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugs” has influenced Ms. Jolie in a rightward direction.
She wouldn’t be the first.
Aug 25, 2008 - 11:36 am 9. Mike_K:It has to help them make up their minds when they see Emil Jones call a black Hillary delegate an “Uncle Tom”. Really a class act those Chicago pols.
Aug 25, 2008 - 11:57 am 10. JaimeRoberto:Thousands of Germans chanted Obama’s name in unison, yet it is McCain who is Hitler? Anyway, I thought Bush was supposed to be Hitler. I’m having a hard time keeping track of all this.
Aug 25, 2008 - 12:37 pm 11. Victor Erimita:I don’t know. I think Madonna could be very effective for Obama. I mean, that shot of her in the leather kink outfit with her legs splayed—it’s just designed to attract the Middle America voter. It just gives her that extra edge of credibility with the mainstream.
Aug 25, 2008 - 12:51 pm 12. tim maguire:Jaime, perhaps you weren’t aware that, while Hitler may have been unique in German politics, we have a great many of him here. In fact, if I tallied them up right, I find we have preciesly as many Hitlers as the left needs us to have.
Aug 25, 2008 - 12:56 pm 13. David C:I think the Left is sorry Giuliani didn’t get the nomination, because they had a whole raft of “Giuliani is Mussolini” material ready to go….
Aug 25, 2008 - 1:23 pm 14. Tcobb:For most people who take a shrill leftist stance it is merely a fashion statement. They have no idea of the theoretical roots of the ideas they espouse or the real history of the people who attempted to implement those ideas, and the great human misery that was caused by those efforts. All the “kewl” people think this way, and therefore they should too.
They are the real paleo-conservatives, clinging to 19th century ideas that have been repeatedly discredited by history.
Aug 25, 2008 - 2:30 pm 15. ricpic:Robert Downey Jr.’s time in prison was a real learning experience.
Aug 25, 2008 - 2:37 pm 16. Terrye:Madonna’s time has past. She needs to give it up. I mean that, she is turning into a parody.
I read that Downey’s parents were very permissive and liberal. He grew up with no boundaries and got in all sorts of trouble. It could be now that he is more mature, he is thinking that some rules are not a bad thing.
I wonder how many people in Hollywood are voting for McCain, but just don’t want to admit it.
Aug 25, 2008 - 3:19 pm 17. Roger L Simon:“I wonder how many people in Hollywood are voting for McCain, but just don’t want to admit it.”
More than you think.
Aug 25, 2008 - 3:20 pm 18. Herb:“I think the public is so bored with the political opinions of entertainment personalities, their eyes are rolling back in their heads.”
Question: Do mystery novelists count as “entertainment personalities?”
Second Question: Why would anyone who’s voting for McCain not want to admit it?
Aug 25, 2008 - 3:48 pm 19. Judge Crater:Bush is Hilter! That’s why he is peacefully leaving office at the end of his term. Just like the Nazis.
Aug 25, 2008 - 3:53 pm 20. Promoguy:Second Question: Why would anyone who’s voting for McCain not want to admit it?”
Because they savor paychecks????
Aug 25, 2008 - 4:11 pm 21. JH:Tcobb, you are so right.
Aug 25, 2008 - 4:39 pm 22. Barry Dauphin:“I wonder how many people in Hollywood are voting for McCain, but just don’t want to admit it.”
More than you think.
And they are afraid they won’t work if they speak publicly? Afraid of the same people who like to wax endlessly about McCarthyism and the evils of blacklisting?
Aug 25, 2008 - 4:54 pm 23. Zhombre:If Jon Voight starts doing dinner theater in Phoenix, you’ll know the left is blacklisting.
Aug 25, 2008 - 6:09 pm 24. vnjagvet:I know this for a fact. In the past 8 years, not one person who called Bush “Hitler” has been incarcerated. Not a single one. Does anyone seriously think that Hitler let people call him names like “Marx” or “Levi” without retaliation?
Aug 25, 2008 - 6:58 pm 25. qrstuv:Promoguy,
Exactly my thought. I work in a company dominated by leftists in a blue city. No way I’m telling ‘em who I’m voting for.
Aug 25, 2008 - 7:23 pm 26. Molon Labe:heather, she won’t vote for a Republican, but will she vote for McCain?
Aug 25, 2008 - 10:39 pm 27. srlucado:Question: Do mystery novelists count as “entertainment personalities?”
You bet, Herb! Every time I channel-surf past Entertainment Tonight, Inside Hollywood, or TMZ, they’re bringing us breathless fans up to date on the latest “Real or Rumor” news about our favorite novelist/screenwriters! (Can you believe Nora Ephron was caught dead in that outfit!?! And those paparazzi swarming Elmore Leonard–is that somethin’, or what?)
Yep, I bet Roger paid for his new Prius with just a tiny fraction of his endorsement money.

Aug 26, 2008 - 12:13 am 28. Pops in Vienna:Madonna kinda reminds me of that Norma Desmond character in “Sunset Boulevard”. I don’t know how effective she would be at getting out the youth vote. Isn’t she old enough to be a granny?
Aug 26, 2008 - 12:54 am 29. Teplost:What Tcobb said!
“For most people who take a shrill leftist stance it is merely a fashion statement.”
That describes all the trendy lefty people I know. And, oddly, the more loud-mouthed they are, the more likely they are to be women married to bankers and living in the high-rent district. It’s a case of advanced infantilism, and, like most small children, they like playing dress-up. The difference, of course, is that when small children play dress-up, there are no consequences for the roles they play.
Aug 26, 2008 - 5:37 am 30. TG Poll:Some of Obama’s followers are the human equivalent of the $150 “peace symbol” t shirts one might see on display at Nordstrom.
Aug 26, 2008 - 8:13 am 31. Pajamas Media » Madonna’s McCain Tantrum:[...] Perhaps the desperation is indeed deserved, as even rank-and-file Dems are suddenly re-thinking whether they’ll support Obama on Election Day. As I’ve said at my own blog, in this longest-ever presidential campaign, the more voters learn about Obama the more skeletons they find in his closet. So maybe Madonna’s little game will actually play into Republican hands by reinforcing McCain’s message that Obama’s “just another witless celebrity”. [...]
Aug 26, 2008 - 8:33 am 32. Jim,MtnViewCA,USA:I was at an upscale bed and breakfast in Sausalito (Marin County, CA). A lady from Chicago was there on vacation with her daughter. Originally they had intended to go to Italy but the “Bush economy has decimated the value of the dollar”. So instead they flew to New York, then flew to Vancouver and drove down to Washington/Oregon/California. They were appalled at all the logging trucks in Washington because they were raised to value the environment. But what a carbon footprint they had!
Aug 26, 2008 - 9:17 am 33. heather:They were strongly for Obama.
well, Roger, I am so heartened to know that Downey and Angelina (and I suppose Brad Pitt) are voting for McCain. One thing about Brangelina: they are making little children chic.. I have noticed a lot of parents carrying their tots around in the same manner as do Brangelina.. and that is a GOOD thing!
As to my friend: I believe that the tribal ties of Democrat versus Evil is very strong. She may just not vote for a President at all, but I am sure that is as far as she will go.
Aug 26, 2008 - 1:49 pm 34. heather:Jim, Mtn View… those silly women are so typical of the people running Canada.
One notable thing about Up Here this year in Canada’s north is a LOT of bears. My daughter lives in northern Alberta and is keeping her children inside right now, because there is a large sow bear munching on oats in the next field; on the way down the Alaska Highway, we saw 4 bears (and a solar car that we thought was a space ship at first);
The bears have little or no fear of humans, anymore, and therefore hang around human settlements more often.
A few years ago, a bear (a sick, starving one) managed to kill a couple of people, one, by simply swiping off his head.
But your little ladies from Chicago live in Disney’s Land, and would be Outraged if there were regular culling of said bears.
Aug 26, 2008 - 2:08 pm 35. hermie:Maybe Brangelina and others have gotten the hint that Obama is actually serious about redistribution of wealth, and that they are part of the ‘evil rich’ that the Obamamaniacs want to ‘tax to the max’.
Obama wants to give the UN billions of taxpayer dollars, and Jolie has seen up front the corruption and ineffectiveness of the UN. Why give billions to warlords and dictators who will simply oppress and starve their people even more?
Aug 27, 2008 - 7:49 am 36. tim maguire:heather–I think yuo hit on the bigger of the two dangers for Obama. Sure, some Democrats will cross over and vote McCain, but probably not in huge numbers. What we may see in huge numbers is Democrats staying home on election day.
Aug 27, 2008 - 12:49 pm 37. jake:Lots of us Republicans are staying home, too. No way, no how, am I voting for McCain!
Aug 28, 2008 - 11:25 am 38. Promoguy:Jake, and I mean this respectfully. You mention that you and many others are staying home and not voting for McCain. Explain to me and maybe to others on here, as to how this ‘anger’ with McCain, which could result in Obama becoming president helps this country. Or better helps the ideas which you feel McCain is not in tune with.
Aug 28, 2008 - 11:44 am 39. Herb:C’mon, qrstuv, live out loud. Don’t live in a bubble. Don’t give in to the fear. Engage with them. Maybe you can change their minds before they change yours.
I for one am exhausted by complaints about Hollywood as I am about the obese complaining about McDonalds. Actually I’m exhausted by people who play the victim in general.
Aug 29, 2008 - 6:11 pm 40. DSH:It’s more likely that Madonna made is showing those pictures because she thinks she is making a brilliant point. That is why I enjoy watching celebrities talk about politics much in the same way that I enjoy watching dogs eat peanut butter.
Aug 31, 2008 - 6:32 pm 41. Flüge:I agree totally to DSH. I bet Madonna gives a s*** about the whole thing, as long as none of the candidates claims to expropriate her. Everyone in show-bizz or politics just acts egoistically, but that’s normal and ok, but one should also consider this!
