McCain - the big veep mystery

People have been asking me all day if PJM has any inside dope about the McCain veepstakes.  Nothing  I would trust, though I have heard rumors.  A few days ago it was Romney, until the “how many houses” dust-up.  (Romney has more than a few manses himself.)  Then there was  Lieberman, the McCain pal, but he’s pro-choice, apparently a no-no. This was followed by the woman whispers, especially with Hillary dissed (or not).  But Sara Palin doesn’t have a whole lot of experience and someone said McCain doesn’t get along with Kay Bailey Hutchinson.  Who knew?  Anyway, Pawlenty has risen to the fore as of this writing…. Oh, I forgot - there was a Colin Powell ripple a few days ago.  Wishful thinking.  In any case, it won’t be long before we all find out.

Powell, by the way, has hinted at endorsing Obama. He is, undeniably, giving the Democrat a long look this go-round.

I’ve been wrong before. But with McCain’s advertising campaign making such a big issue out of what the other Dems said about Obama during the primaries, it seems unlikely that he’d pick Romney, given their relationship during the primaries.

I like Lieberman in many ways, but that would simply be a war presidency ticket, and not a great ticket for some unity on domestic/economic issues.

Looks more and more like Pawlenty.

“Looks more and more like Pawlenty.”

The folks over at intrade certainly agree with you. His ’stock’ has soared today.

But if it had been Powell, Powell would have been lined up for 2010, when John packs it in. Not so lame a duck. McCain-Powell v. Obama-Biden would make for foreign policy debates worth watching.

Did Obama just say toys would be safer with him as president?

That’s it, I’m voting for Obama ;)

This is one decision I’m not losing sleep over.

If McCain can’t wallop that pair of preening Democratic gasbags on his own, no VP candidate is going to help.

Powell didn’t have the guts to run for the top job.

I don’t see him exposing one once of halo for #2.

I think I need to check my hearing…. what day is it today?

I could swear I’m hearing McCain, but it’s not his voice, nor likeness. If I close my eyes I almost hear McCain.

It’s weird.

Aug 28, 2008 - 7:54 pm 10. Lem:

country music? are you sure this is not a republican take over?

I think the crowd is confused too.

Aug 28, 2008 - 7:59 pm 11. Peter G:

Don’t know. I’m cool with anyone except Huckabee (anyone that’s been mentioned as a possibility). But it does matter in the general election, so Mr. Lieberman, as much as I respect you, I hope it’s not you.

Aug 28, 2008 - 8:04 pm 12. Lem:

OMG the closing prayer was way to Obamas left.

Have you seen people leave a stadium any faster? it’s only been two songs.

Aug 28, 2008 - 8:14 pm 14. John Moore:

With Lieberman, it goes far beyond non-pro-life. He’s a straight line Democrat except for foreign policy. His only alignment with Republican policies is his hawkishness.

Aug 28, 2008 - 8:55 pm 15. Lem:

Its Romney.

Aug 28, 2008 - 9:06 pm 16. Sullihan:

McCain should pick Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine.

Aug 29, 2008 - 12:17 am 17. Peter G:

Actually it now sounds like it’s Palin.

You have to credit the McCain campaign for managing to keep this a secret through Friday morning.

Aug 29, 2008 - 6:07 am 18. Peter G:

Or not Palin. Romney is in Dayton, but Fox is reporting it’s not him (though they may have been deliberately faked out).

Maybe it’s John Kasich, who can just drive down from Columbus to Dayton. He wouldn’t even have had to start driving yet in order to make his 11:00 AM appointment.

Aug 29, 2008 - 6:14 am 19. Mike_K:

I like Kasich but Palin fills a real spot in McCain’s campaign with women and pro-life folks. We’ll see this may all be head fakes right now.

Aug 29, 2008 - 6:39 am 20. J.J. Sefton:

I like Kasich a lot but I don’t think he brings anything as electrifying as a Palin pick would (hottie references notwithstanding).

Palin seems to be it as of 10:30AM eastern time….
