With the economy imploding and jihadist bombs exploding, I can’t remember a more depressing Thanksgiving in my increasingly long life. Still we have some things to be happy for. The “British Curry King” made it out alive.
Okay. Bad joke.
But we do really have things to be happy for, even in the darkest times – our families, our friends, our health, that John Kerry didn’t become Secretary of State. [I thought you were going to stay away from the gallows humor.-ed. Sorry, it's in the DNA.]
Okay, okay, there is something truly serious and possibly positive in all this – the bleakest moments can bring us together. When families gather around the Thanksgiving table today, one thing should be clear to the lefties and the righties in everybody’s mishpocheh (sorry for the Yiddish term, but I didn’t want to repeat families, and you know what I mean): The brutal events in Mumbai remind us all that the War on Terror is the real deal – not a police action, as the aforementioned Mr. Kerry once said – that will doubtless be with us for the rest of our lives. And that may include the young children at the table.
So what do we do now? Well, as I recall, we just had an election. Happy Thanksgiving, Mr. Obama. You wanted to be President? Well, now you are. Democratic Congress, your turn too.
For the moment, I am happy about this. It has long been my contention that the War on Terror (War on Islamofascism) will only be won if the Democratic Party owns it as well as the Republicans. Now that can happen, for better or worse. So, dear readers of this blog, when you gather around your tables today, love that family member who voted for the other side. You’re going to need him or her and he or she is going to need you. We’re all in this together.
Happy Thanksgiving!

There’s a war on? A WORLD war? I trust someone has notified the “office” of the president-elect by now. Let’s all hope he is up for the task — for with the pomp, comes the circumstance.
Nov 27, 2008 - 8:59 am 4. Frank:The war on terror is bogus. We aren’t fighting the Tamil Tigers, or the Irish Republican Army, or the FARC, or ETA. We are fighting Islamists and Jihadists, and we won’t be able to win until people start being honest about this.

And all the time thinking about the bastards who are upsetting my way of life. God bless the Indians in their time of war. I don’t think I’ve ever met an angry Indian. This might change. Lightnin’ says it best “a world war. “

Happy Thanksgiving!
Nov 27, 2008 - 10:01 am 8. ldt:When I saw the news this morning I actually felt sick. I was introduced the to the “War on Terror” in March of 2000 when I was in Manila and was always amazed at how no one in the West seemed to a) be aware of the Jihad being waged b) care. As long as Philippinos, Thais, Indonesians were being killed it didn’t matter. Only when “Westerners” were killed did the Media even notice. September 11th changed that for a time but then people seemed to forget, lose interest or buy into all this X-files conspiracy nonsense.
I lived in South East Asia long enough to get used to the idea that this sort of thing can happen at any time and it is the luck of the draw whether you’re on the train or in the spot when it does. However being back in North America I actually feel less safe as here a Mumbai or Belsan type attack would be so easy.
Let’s all pray that those protecting us continue to have success in stopping attacks, but lets not forget about the people around the globe having to deal with these kooks. We’re all in the same boat.

L’chayyim, Roger, and thanks to President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld for making sure what happened in Mumbai (and Islamabad) didn’t happen here.

Happy Thanksgiving! Among the things we have to give thanks for is, perhaps, an economy that may not be quite as bad as the doomsayers claim. I can tell the MSM is already getting ready to hail BO as an economic genius if it only turns out to be as bad as the Great Depression!
Nov 27, 2008 - 12:54 pm 19. Rachel Peepers:Here’s something to be thankful for. Thanks to George Bush on down, we’ve actually won the war in Iraq.
Mission accomplished.
At the same time, I have the feeling if Barack were President and the surge was his decision, with all the information at his command, he would have authorized it, too.
Of course, if you read the Times (ny or washington) you’d wouldn’t know how winningly the war in Iraq has turned out.
For that, the mainstream press should have its constitutional guarantees removed, and its reporters and editors should be made to sit in a big time out room until they realize what a disgraceful group of liars;cheerleaders for the Democratic Party that they’ve become.
From my perspective, Roger, the times aren’t unhappy, challenging yes, but unhappy, no. Go outside and breathe free air hug the members of your family when you join them in this victorious Thanksgiving, tell the people you love how much they mean to you. I guarantee you will feel unhappy no longer.
Of the soldiers who won this war, my hats off to you, my prayers are with you for a safe, soon return and I do hope you realize that your sacrifices have made us all safer.
Happy Thanksgiving to PJM voices pro and con alike, Democrats and Republicans alike and all who value freedom while remembering those who pay the price to keep us free.
The differences we voice don’t make us weaker. They make us stronger. Again, happy turkey day to all.

Happy Thanksgiving, from France…I just finished the turkey soup and pot pies and turkey à la crème. I made my french family realize what is great about the US, the ability to give thanks, all together even though people don’t have the same religion. However last Sunday as it isn’t (can you believe it? for all the other holidays here?) a national holiday.

Nov 27, 2008 - 2:37 pm 23. Gannymede:War on Terror. I left the Hotel Tavistock in London one weekday morning in 1973 on my way downtown. Halfway there, and an explosion somewhere toward the river; windows blown out and two Middle Easterners shot dead in the street.
I still don’t know for certain what it was all about, but you couldn’t cross Tower Bridge that morning, and I was frisked at Heathrow the next day before boarding. It wasn’t the IRA, I’m sure…the issues were probably immature versions of the ones we’re seeing worldiwide with Jihadists and Islamism.
I don’t know for sure, but this has been going on for a long time.
Nov 27, 2008 - 3:12 pm 24. rob:Hi Roger, Happy Thanksgiving from Italy!
Nov 27, 2008 - 3:17 pm 25. PJ:Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Roger.
Yes, this is a good first meeting of Mr. Obama’s Reality 101 class. I hope he learns well from those who have already taken it. He might want to check with W to figure out how to give us another 7 years of safety at home.
Nov 27, 2008 - 4:04 pm 26. Jerry:Roger,
Just a thought – when in Iraq things looked darkest (think Fallujah – 2006), then great Americans hunkered down, thought things through to find real solutions, and acted (i.e., the Surge). Just hoping the Indians find the resolve and the resourceful leaders to do the same. [My personal experience is that the Indians are, by nature, mild-mannered people who have a very open forgive-and-forget approach to life. But they also have purchased state-of-the-art armaments, and recent aerial war games indicate they may not be the best folks to mess with in actual combat.]
Interesting times, indeed.
Nov 27, 2008 - 6:26 pm 27. Bozoer Rebbe:Roger, a happy Thanksgiving to you and the entire PM mishpacha: writers, editors and readers.
Concerning the Mumbai attacks, I noted that while the Chabad House was obviously a target of the attacks, all the cable news networks, including Fox, kept up with the “Americans and Brits targeted” meme, without mentioning the 800 lb gorilla. Admitting that the terrorists were also going after Jews might make them slip and use the M word.
Nov 27, 2008 - 6:28 pm 28. Jack Aubrey:Usual neocon diversion from reality.
All this shit happened on your BOY Bush’s watch, while you dreamed of Iraq glory, not happening as Iran sends Bush running, and bombing Iran, never happening.
Digest it as your Thanksgiving meal.
Nov 27, 2008 - 8:53 pm 29. Gary Rosen:Happy Thanksgiving, Jack, thanks for adding a touch of class.
Nov 27, 2008 - 9:00 pm 30. Annabel:Poor Jack, what will he do once his whipping boy is gone?
Nov 27, 2008 - 9:12 pm 31. Archeryl:Jack, get used to it. With Obama as our President, we will see MUCH more of this. The children voted for THE ONE, the adults voted for McCain. I pray for America, especially since my son is in Boot Camp, about to become a Marine to protect ignorant folks like Jack. Thank GOD for America, and our great military.
Nov 27, 2008 - 9:34 pm 32. Goose:Why did America invade Iraq? To prevent non-existent weapons of mass destruction from imminent use against the U.S.
Why was the surge necessary? Because once America invaded Iraq, it didn’t leave. It didn’t turn the country over to an international peacekeeping force. It (Donald Rumsfeld and President Bush) refused to recognize that an insurgency was possible, then once it occurred, they refused to accept its reality. Dick Cheney said in 2005 that the insurgency was “in its last throes.” If that was true, then no additional troops would have been needed in 2007.
Has victory occurred in Iraq? If “victory” has now been defined as wasting over 4,000 American lives, $600 billion (and counting) dollars, over 30,000 wounded, over 100,000 dead Iraqis, several million Iraqi refugees who fled their country, and their economy in a complete shambles, and we can’t leave until 2011, 8 years aver the invasion- well, then, that’s a victory. Enjoy it. And don’t forget to keep your tinfoil helmets on firmly so that reality and facts can’t seep in.
Nov 27, 2008 - 9:45 pm 33. Fen:Jack Aubrey: “All this shit happened on your BOY Bush’s watch”
Nope. It was also Bill Clinton’s vacation from history, busily molesting his employees in the Oval Office while Al Queda plotted 9-11. Trading jobs for sex when he should have been extraditing Bin Laden. And lets not mention John Kerry circular filing a warning that Logan was not secure, mere months before 9-11.
“while you dreamed of Iraq glory”
Poor Jack. He has no long range plan to marginalize radical Islam. Guess he thinks we can kill every terrorist out there? Still hasn’t figured why establishing a democrat Iraq is vital to winning the war on terror. Outcome based education, Jack?
“Digest it as your Thanksgiving meal”
I prefer to save your comment as moonbat parody for the dessert. Very delicious. Thanks!
Nov 27, 2008 - 10:09 pm 34. Fen:“To prevent non-existent weapons of mass destruction from imminent use against the U.S.”
More lies. As bad a communicator as Bush is, I recall he specifically said that the threat was NOT imminent, but that we couldn’t afford to wait until it was imminent. Perhaps you’ve been watching to much SNL.
“to prevent non-existent weapons”
Sure. And if you can’t find your car keys, I guess that proves they never existed. Such logic from the enlightened sophisticates….
Nov 27, 2008 - 10:14 pm 35. Goose:THE STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS (January
Bush Calls Iraq Imminent Threat
WASHINGTON — A somber and steely President Bush, speaking to a skeptical world Tuesday in his State of the Union address, provided a forceful and detailed denunciation of Iraq, promising new evidence that Saddam Hussein’s regime poses an imminent danger to the world and demanding the United Nations convene in just one week to consider the threat.
But the president made clear his decision whether to attack Iraq would not hinge on U.N. approval.
“All free nations have a stake in preventing sudden and catastrophic attack. We are asking them to join us, and many are doing so,” the president said. “Yet the course of this nation does not depend on the decision of others.”
Calls have mounted in recent weeks for the president to make a better case for going to war. In response, Bush argued that use of force is not only justified but necessary, and that the threat is not only real but imminent.
“If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late,” Bush said. “Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option.”
Funny thing: I may have misplaced my car keys. But my car was still sitting right there in my driveway where I could see it. Now that we’ve been in that country over 5 1/2 years, we haven’t found a single weapon of mass destruction. Here is what the professionals who were in Iraq looking for WMD’s had to say:
“… we have not uncovered weapons…. Believe me, it’s not for lack of trying. We’ve been to virtually every ammunition supply point between the Kuwaiti border and Baghdad, but they’re simply not there.”
Lt. Gen. James Conway, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, May 30, 2003.
“I don’t think they existed…”
David Kay, leader of the U.S. hunt for weapons of mass destruction, who resigned on January 23, 2004.
Nov 27, 2008 - 10:41 pm 36. Goose:“I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators. . . . I think it will go relatively quickly, . . . (in) weeks rather than months.”
Vice President Cheney, March 16, 2003.
“It’s a handful, a rearguard that’s attempting to maintain a degree of political relevance here. We’re going to finish these guys off.”
Col. James Hickey referring to the insurgency in September 19, 2003.
“There is no question in my mind that the coalition and the Iraqi people are winning.”
Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez, in Baghdad, December 13, 2003.
We’re on a glide-path toward success … We have turned the corner, and now we can accelerate down the straightaway.”
Gen. Charles H. Swannack, Jr., Press Briefing, January 6, 2004.
“We’re making steady progress in implementing our five-step plan toward the goal we all want: completing the mission so that Iraq is stable and self-governing, and American troops can come home….”
President Bush, September 25, 2004
“I see tangible progress. Iraqi security elements are being rebuilt from the ground up…. Iraqi leaders are stepping forward, leading their country and their security forces courageously … there has been progress in the effort to enable Iraqis to shoulder more of the load for their own security, something they are keen to do.”
General David Petraeus, in a September 26, 2004, op-ed piece during President Bush’s re-election efforts in 2004.
“We feel right now that we have … broken the back of the insurgency, and we have taken away this safe haven.”
Lt. Gen. John Sattler, Press Briefing, November 18, 2004.
“I believe we’re really making progress in Iraq….”
President Bush, April 28, 2005.
The insurgency in Iraq is “in the last throes.”
Vice President Dick Cheney, May 31, 2005
“Iraq has made incredible political progress….”
President Bush, October 28, 2005.
“Iraqis are making inspiring progress toward building a democracy.”
President Bush, November 14, 2005.
“We’re making progress on all fronts.”
President Bush, May 25, 2006.
“There has been good progress.”
President Bush, March 19, 2007.
During September 2007 hearings, Republican Senator John Warner asked General Petraeus “if we continue …this strategy.. you are making America safer?”
Petraeus’ answer: “Sir, I don’t know actually,”
Nov 27, 2008 - 10:48 pm 37. Goose:If you are right wing, neoconservative, Bush loving, Obama fearing (or hating), narrow minded, and/or a “real” American, don’t worry. Your defense mechanisms have successfully rebuffed reality for more than 7 years. That cognitive dissonance you experienced a moment ago when you confronted facts that clashed with your beliefs will dissipate. You may now return to your regular “programming”- in both senses of the word.
Nov 27, 2008 - 10:56 pm 38. A. N. Pierson:“Cognitive dissonance?” Not doing any projecting, are we?
Nov 27, 2008 - 11:18 pm 39. Goose:Cognitive dissonance? Moi? Mais non. In my world, Bush is the worst president in history. He ignored a briefing from his intelligence agencies that told him in August of 2001 that Osama bin Laden was determined to strike in America. Instead, he went on a month long vacation in Crawford. He sat paralyzed and read “My Pet Goat” after being told in no uncertain terms that America was under attack. He vowed to get bin Laden “dead or alive” in the Fall of 2001. Seven years later, Bush is leaving. Bin Laden is still there, and Al Qaida and the Taliban are on the upswing. He attacked the one Arab country- Iraq- that was anathema to fundamentalist Muslims (it was easily the most Westernized, with alcohol being sold publicly, men being clean shaven, women in modern Western dress and holding positions of authority) and turned it into a junior jihadist Iran, another theocratic Islamic country in the making. Most impressive in the war against Islamic jihadists, don’t you think?
Bush screwed up the military, which has had to lower their recruiting standards to Vietnam era standards and has had to pay out enormous bonuses to retain or attract warm bodies. Soldiers are now on their third and fourth deployments without respite. And don’t forget what his administration did for the wounded- he gave them the awful conditions at Walter Reed (that was in his second term, years into his presidency) and tried to cut their VA benefits to save money.
He screwed up the economy with his infatuation with deregulation. He screwed up the environment and set back efforts to deal with global climate change by 8 years. (Healthy forest, clear skies, every initiative from his lexicon did the opposite of what the title suggested). Katrina exposed the politicization of FEMA and the exodus of competent professionals who had been attracted to the agency under Clinton. The Justice Department debacle under Alberto Gonzales and the U.S. Attorney scandal did more damage to that department than anyone since John Mitchell and Richard Kliendienst. (that’s Watergate, circa 1972-1974). It’s late, and I’m not going to go on for another 10 pages on everything in Bush’s travesty of a legacy to the country- except for his taking a surplus and turning it into record deficits (over $500 billion annually) with record spending. Way to go you fiscally “conservative” Republicans! You took $5 trillion in debt and doubled it in less than 8 years!
Cognitive dissonance? Not so much on my side of the equation.
Nov 27, 2008 - 11:40 pm 40. Gary Rosen:I guess lefties and BO cultists don’t observe Thanksgiving, the quintessentially American holiday (surprise!). No time off from their choleric, incoherent, factless rants.

Nov 28, 2008 - 12:27 am 42. Marriu:Well said, Goose. It’s hard to believe that there is a quarter of the population who thinks that Bush has been a great president and that the country has been on the right track. Incroyable!

Also praise for all the men and women fighting these ruthless enemies globally. They are invaluable in this secret war against the US, and other (non)muslim countries, like India.
The Bush-Bashers will have to put their money where their mouth is, as THEIR hero will soon lead the US for (at least) the next for years.
I have my doubts if BO really understands the necessity of fighting Islamic terrorism

Save my totally accurate comment for your daily dose of crow for the next 8 years, my friend.
Bush is a nitwit, and a loser.
He has screwed up not one but two wars.
He has managed the worst economy since the Great Depression.
Of course he is your hero … ROTFL
Nov 30, 2008 - 4:33 am 46. BMoon:I see BDS is still alive and well amongst the usual culprits. I suppose it must be so hard to give up since it was the only thing that gave them a few fulfilling moments where they felt their lives had some purpose.
Does anybody know of a 12-step program for them?
Dec 1, 2008 - 12:05 am 47. BMoon:It has long been my contention that the War on Terror (War on Islamofascism) will only be won if the Democratic Party owns it as well as the Republicans. (Roger)
There is a definite downside to this though. The Left’s obsession with their contrived misinterpretation of “equality” leads them inexorably into moral equivalence dementia. If it finally dawns on the PC-addled minds of Obama and the Left that Islamic terrorism is a real threat and needs to be dealt with in realistic ways, then their inherent virus of equivalence must kick in and they will look for some one equally vile and threatening on “the other side,”….and we all know who they will single out as equally “intolerant,” “violent,” and “dangerous to wolrd peace, ” – the Zionists (AKA the Jews.)
Dec 1, 2008 - 12:18 am
