Economic Chaos Update: Will there be a ‘Chicago Tea Party’?

By now half the Internet may have witnessed the ‘Chicago Tea Party‘ video from CNBC’s Rick Santelli. It’s a lot funnier than anything on Saturday Night Live in recent years and simultaneously a lot scarier. [Are we talking Dr. Strangelove here?-ed. Well, not quite, but you know what I mean.]

From the evidence of the reaction on the floor of the Chicago Exchange, a helluva lot of people are fed up (to say the least) with Obama’s mortgage plan. My own personal survey says a lot of people are fed up with many, if not all, aspects of the President’s astoundingly ad hoc economic plans. This man is making me nostalgic for Clinton and Bush and managed to do it in a matter of weeks. Even most of my liberal friends are now panicked for their futures.

So is a ‘Chicago Tea Party’ on the horizon, with Boomers spilling trendy herbal teas in Lake Michigan? As it happens, I will be in Chicago on Monday promoting you-know-what and will look into this for PJTV. See you then.

UPDATE: I will be signing “Blacklisting Myself” in Chicago on Monday (Feb 23) evening from 6:30P (local time) onwards at Sullivan’s Steakhouse, 415 N. Dearborn at the behest of the America’s Future Foundation. Have a book, have a martini, have a steak, in whatever order you want. (Maybe even some tea.) Event will be in upstairs room, I am told.

Hi Roger,

Sign me up for the “tea party”. I will be there in full Indian costume. Maybe PJ Media could promote this and get a HUGE turnout. Here’s the song we’ll sing on the way to the harbor…

Santelli is awesome…I pretty much have to have a business channel on during the day given that I trade stocks, but Santelli’s hits are some of the very few enjoyable parts of that, esp. on CNBC, where it’s lefty orthodoxy almost nonstop otherwise.

“a helluva lot of people are fed up”

And a lot of them are not Republicans! Barack Obama has lost the faith of middle-of-the-road Americans. They no longer trust him regarding economic matters.
Tomorrow will complete the first month of Obama’s presidency. The next month should be a real doozy.

The 0bama halo effect isn’t going to protect Pelosi and Reid in ‘10. Their numbers are in the toilet, and there’s going to be a major revolt. And by then, 0bama’s halo will have lost its shine.

It’s a myth that the donkeys ran a brilliant campaign. They’re a bunch of idiots, but between the MSM and dumb luck, they managed to get control. Watch ‘em lose it.

Perhaps the modern day equivalent would be for those with mortgages in good standing to congregate together and burn their mortgage papers.

Many otherwise complacent people are growing very uneasy with the level of corruption, ineptitude, and arrogance that has been displayed in the past three weeks.

One of my family members tried to buy a house this week for 10% down. They received financing approval three weeks ago. Today banks want 20-30% down. It blew the deal. They have perfect credit. Now the reckless people who should not have received loans in the first place are getting bailed out. The money pumped into the system was meant to ease lending. This is not happening. Credit is tightening and it will only continue the downward spiral.

I knew Obama was grossly unqualified and a left-wing radical, articulate but with virtually no executive experience. I’m not really surprised it is this bad this soon — this is what happens when someone is in way over their head. If Obama’s ineptness continues at this rate, I’m wondering if the mainstream media, academia and Hollywood will turn on him. I think not. But if they do, could he be impeached? I think not, his skin color would save him. But who knows? I could happen. Who would have thought such a flawed man could have been elected President?

Feb 19, 2009 - 3:25 pm 34. misanthropicus:

Turns out that Obama is… Obama, that is, nothing more than a local community activist whith a mega ego who got sucked in the US president office by a perfect storm of: two wars very difficult to explain to the nation, a political party and a president at the ebb of popularity, a financial crisis, everything on the background of a cultural implosion.
And now he’s there, in the limelight, and he is the grandiose, naif and uninformed community activist that he has ever been.
Day in day out other silly pronouncements come out, revealing Obama’s incompetence: last night, I watched with much amusement Holbrooke on PBS having to deny that this administration has plans to intervene in the Kashmir matter – fact firmly promised by Obama months ago. Want more?

Feb 19, 2009 - 3:31 pm 35. MCMJR:

Another thing to consider is a leftist is only concerned with the ‘ends’. Since any ‘means’ is acceptable lying is to be expected and compromise is impossible. Unfortunately, our Constitution is not capable of protecting the People from such an assault. The only remedy is the ballot box.

I dunno. It’s leftists up to rafters where I work, and I don’t see them backing off their adoration of BHO. I think it’s too much to expect any of them to act like rational, intelligent people who want what’s best for the country. They want their agenda pushed through, and as long as they see BHO championing the poor, defending Mother Gaia, and corraling all those crazy rightwing nutcases, they’ll stay with him.

Feb 19, 2009 - 3:54 pm 38. worriedmom:

“It’s leftists up to rafters where I work, and I don’t see them backing off their adoration of BHO.”

Barack Obama will retain a solid 40% support—and that’s a lot of people. But he is rapidly losing the middle-of-the-road voters. You are most likely surrounded by a good size minority. That will not, however, be anywhere near enough to save Obama’s presidency.

Feb 19, 2009 - 4:01 pm 40. deguello:

Alan Keyes captured only 27% of the vote when he was defeated by Barack Obama. This is a very rare occurrence in American politics. Both Goldwater and George McGovern still captured roughly 40% of the total vote. This means, in practical terms, that one will likely still be surrounded by Obama supporters in some very blue areas of the country—no matter what happens in the foreseeable future.

This man is my new hero!

He gave voice on a national scale to my very sentiments.

I’m tired of having to support losers.

I work my ass off at my business, pay my bills, and live beneath my means. Geez.

I see folks overspend, get into loans they have no business getting into, then going on fancy vacations, buying big TVs they can’t afford, and new cars they don’t need.

And I’m driving an old car and loving it. I would not dream of buying a new car–depreciates too quickly.

Obama needs to disappear.

Our nation will suffer.

I screamed from the rooftops during the election that this guy was dangerous. I hated Clinton and now I yearn for the “old days.” At least I knew that Clinton loved this country and thought–even if he was a criminal–that was he was doing was best for the country. But Obama wants to destroy this country in order to reshape it into a socialist/communist/racist country. I’m not kidding.

Read Obama’s books. Read his history. Check out his friends. It’s been in front of America all this time, but because he is black and can say two words together, people voted for him.

America had better wake up and stop being victims and sheeple. Because sheep get slaughtered.

It sure may stick in the craw of many a Right Wing Israel-Firster, but “Pitchfork Pat” Buchanan was dead on for the last 20 years about Free Trade!!, liberating resentful Freedom Lovers in various craphole nations. And about the seeds of economic destruction the NYC bankers and financiers, their International counterparts were setting up since Reagan’s days through their bought US Government officials.

Pat Buchanan is now solidly in the pessimist camp, saying we will suffer a Depression, a long one unless we fix our comptetiveness and trade problems and clean up the NYC crooks. People like Pat Buchanan are now talking openly about the American system of government is now broken, and further paralyzed by lawyers -with a growing belief in people that we need a 3rd, at least somewhat violent American Revolution. (the Civil War was the 2nd).
A true “Tea Party” may be coming.

Last weekend, we had so many people showing up at a public range to sight their rifles in and do pistol practice that hundreds had to be turned away. The rangemaster said he’d never seen so many people show up.

And in a Blue, Midwestern State.

That election had less to do with the “blueness” of Illinois, a state that regularly goes between Dem and Republican control..than 3 factors. Two strongly contributory and one major.

1. Widespread hatred of Bush.
2. Tremendous corruption troubles hit the whole statewide Republican organization in 2004. Everyone knew the Republican Gov was prison-bound.
3. Major – Alan Keyes parachuted in from nowhere as a carpetbagging black “gimmick” nominee that no one really accepted as legit. Then he promptly set about proving that he was intolerent, and a bat-sh*t crazy religious zealot. Even some that voted for Keyes said they only did so because they did not want Dems to get such an appealing candidate in National office.

And it’s funny…with all the “branding” being done trying to sell us that the fellow who claims to have been born in Hawaii is a latter-day darker FDR without the wheelchair, it seems to have completely escaped them the kind of vituperative hate that many, many people held for him and his administrations as a “traitor to his class”.

Feb 19, 2009 - 7:29 pm 55. Georgia Peach:

BO has doomed himself. Hopefully, Pelosi and Reid have too. *fingers crossed*

The reasons that BO has doomed himself are numerous.

1) He overpromised…to EVERYONE. When you hear those snippets of people talking about obama going to “pay their rent and fill their gas tanks”, they are serious! They honestly believe he is going to take care of them to that extent. Did any of you hear the clip of the woman who was getting her car repossessed? She said, “I’m not rich like you folks, but by the end of the year I will be, ’cause we got obama”! These people are going to be sorely disappointed by the end of this year.

2) He’s a narcissist extraordinaire. He honestly believes his own rhetoric and thinks that he can bullcrap the American people indefinitely with no results. That isn’t going to happen.

3) Time is his enemy. People gave him a vote for “hope”. The public at large *needs* hope. But when the economy continues to worsen, they will turn on BO. Nothing brings out the bad ratings like the economy going south and the president they elected to fix it failing to do so!

4) The American people are not patient and they are very fickle! Remember when President Bush had an approval rating of 86%?!!!

I suugest that NO politicians be invited. Let’s make this a statement by ordinary people.

I think the entire point of the first tea party was to repeal the tax on tea. Can we begin a movement to repeal the so called stimulus bills?

Feb 19, 2009 - 7:45 pm 58. joan kyriazes:

Roger, when and where are you going to be in Chicago?

Feb 19, 2009 - 7:46 pm 59. Insufficiently Sensitive:

The ‘mortgage bailout’ provision of the stimulus bill is actually Chapter 2 of one of the most obscene scams the Democratic Party has ever put over on the public.

Chapter 1: in which the Democrats set out to buy the votes of folks who couldn’t obtain realty loans under traditional standards of borrower risk due diligence. The Community Reinvestment Act used govermnent coercion to force lenders to lend to high-risk borrowers. In that way, the Democratic Party forced the transfer of bank deposits (the property of careful savers) into the hands of ‘borrowers’ unlikely to ever pay them back – and TOOK THE CREDIT for lavishing other people’s money on those ‘borrowers’, to cash in at every subsequent election.

After thirteen years of the Clinton version of the CRA, its predictable results (see the NYT article from 1998 on exactly that) just blew up the whole US economy

Chapter 2: the current ‘bailout’. It adds taxpayers to the ranks of those whose earnings are to be diverted into the possession of overextended borrowers. Also, the laws of contracts are suddenly invaded, by Government coercion, so that existing real estate contracts suddenly are to be altered in favor of the borrowers, at the expense of the lenders – again. With the grateful borrowers expected to vote for the party that perverted the laws.

This is more like the doings of Hugo Chavez or Fidel Castro, instead of the US Government that is supposed to act in the interests of ALL its citizens. Indeed it’s time for a Tea Party.

ENOUGH.

I know exactly how he feels. I’ve never picked up a sign and marched in protest in my life. Like a lot of responsible citizens, I’ve been way too busy going to work, paying my bills, and worrying about the well being of my family to do what I’ve always seen as “throwing a fit”.

But at some point in the next few months, I’ll be marching and carrying a sign. I’ll probably be screaming at the top of my lungs, too. I don’t know if I’ll make the trip to Chicago in July , or go to DC, or just march in a local demonstration in or near my home – but I will be carrying a sign. Marching.
Throwing a fit, as it were.

Look for me. I’ll be easy to spot. My sign will consist of a single word.

ENOUGH.

See you out there. If you’re as fed up as I am, won’t you please join me?

ENOUGH.

I certainly will join in. I’ve never demonstrated in my life, but we must get the attention of the congress before they blow another few trillion on their pet projects and paying back those who put “the one” in office.

Health care is going to be next. We must keep that safe or we’ll be dying waiting for service like they do in Canada! Pelosi, reid, BO et al have the beginning of it in the spendulus bill. The biggest losers will be older people. According to dashle, “American’s expect too much from their health care” and “older people, instead of accepting their pains and illnesses, want to treat them all”. His book further states that a Federal group would be created to tell doctors “what care would be cost affective…according to the patient’s age, health and chances of survival”.

We need to organize quickly because BOs agenda clearly is to keep “change” happening so fast that we are put off balance and can’t address the issues. Kind of like we are all feeling right now!

1 tidbit, instead of pointing fingers at those who made a grievous mistake Nov 4th, encourage these folks to be on our team. Let’s not attempt to exploit divisive measures.

Our team has a lot of flaws, granted. Though it’s up to us all to improve its past. JMO..

Ok,,,let’s quit all the talk and act.

Are we doing this tea party or not?

Okay pops, name the time and place. I’ll bring my gang with me.

@ 63
only a handful of politicians have been willing to call Frank and Dodd out on their culpability. A sign of maturity is the ability to own up to your mistakes. This is a lesson obviously missed by our “leaders”.

~~~~
You’re assuming what little frankey and chrisy did was a *mistake*. They want control, and the best way to get it is create “chaos”.
Another rant from the douchebag C-fudd – the first word out of his mouth/ass is Jooooo, followed by a blowjob on Buchanan, nothing to do with the topic here (incidentally he’s a big fan of BO). Now that I’m finished laughing, I’m going to give you a friendly, sincere piece of advice, Fudd. You only embarrass yourself by posting here. Instead, just sit quietly in your crappy little flophouse room with the walls closing in on you and eat your beefaroni dinner before you masturbate yourself to sleep. Really, it’s the best you can do.
I don’t know about Lake Michigan, (never sailed on the Lakes), but I reda once somewhere that marine scientists found measurable levels of cafeine in Boston Harbor.
What they ended up tracing it to was the increase in coffee shops in Beantown.
Turns out that the caffeine in your latte or chai tea runs right through you, and gets pissed away down to the sewer filtration plant,(you should see Boston’s “Dukakis Memorial”…it looks like something vaguely nuclear from the set of Woody Allen’s “Sleeper”).
http://graphics.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2007/04/05/1175767951_8489.jpg
So, seeing that Starbucks is closing umpteen thousand of their coffee-shops, I’d say that SOME kind of re-caffeination process is needed.
Thnk of the poor fish…they’re “jonesin’” for THEIR morning jolt.
OK Roger,
What say you? Can PJ Media work with Santelli and organize a series of Tea Parties across America?
Sounds like the posters are fired up and ready to roll. Let’s strike while we still have the internet and talk radio.
I watched the administration stooge slam Santelli. I took his advice and read the plan, all four pages of it. Only in Obamaland can you spend $75,000,000,000 based upon a four page document. OK, I read it it still stinks.
Feb 20, 2009 - 3:04 pm 93. johngaltlives:
Santelli deserves a medal. Im sure after the commies at NBC(nothing but commies) get rid of him, Im sure NEIL CAVUTO will talk ROGER AILES into hiring mr Santelli on FOX. There he can show the idiot GEOFFREY IMMELT that stupid is as stupid does. Or in another vinacular, as Gen Russell Honorle said to the dolt Wolf Blizer “you must be stuck on stupid”.
Feb 20, 2009 - 4:48 pm 96. Roger L Simon:
Mike G, #94: Thanks for your concern, but my time is heavily booked in Chi and there wasn’t time for anything else but the steakhouse signing above. Actually, that’s great as far as I’m concerned. I’ll need to eat – and I’m always up for a martini… after 6 anyway.
Feb 20, 2009 - 4:51 pm 97. Ralph Woods:
Santelli may have an idea here. Obama was encouraging little house party get togethers all over America where the socialists could rail against all the perceived injustices of our society. Conservatives can do the same thing (if we can get past that rugged individualism thing”). We could have costume parties. Dress up as Thomas Paine, Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, etc. instead of Lenin, Marx, Che, Mao, Fidel that so thrill the liberal left.
Feb 20, 2009 - 5:52 pm 98. Terrye:
I have to say that Obama is starting to scare me. Not because he is diabolical, but because he is so damn inept. It is as if he is trying to create a panic.
I read this piece by Gramm {of all people} and it really did help explain the housing crisis. The idea that you give more money to people who can not pay back the loans they already have is not reassuring. I am not sure it is fair either. That is what is bothering people.
Feb 20, 2009 - 5:56 pm 99. Barry Dauphin:
Gibbs was basically disgraceful in talking about Santelli. Why are they so scared? It was an incredibly defensive position to be in. His response validates taxpayer worries. He accuses Santelli of not reading the flimsy document and says nothing about members of Congress not reading the bill they voted for. Well he can become the third BG, cause he’s barely Stayin’ Alive.
Feb 20, 2009 - 6:42 pm 102. Terrye:
Barry:
I read that the Obama people are going after Santelli because he is considered a Wall Street type..and somehow that will help them. I have my doubts. The only thing that will help them is an improving economy and if Obama does not stop acting like Chicken Little with all the hysteria he is going to initiate an honest to God panic.
Feb 20, 2009 - 7:27 pm 103. Zhombre:
Thank you, Bill. I’m proud to be heathen. And if you gentleman don’t want to pollute the Potomac, we could always resort to rope.
Feb 20, 2009 - 7:49 pm 104. Barry Dauphin:
Terrye
Yeah and that’s not a good strategy. Santelli’s rant went viral because of all the mortgage holders who have gutted it out and not defaulted. I understand some people could use help, but in the age of Madoff and Dodd and on & on, there will be a lot of abuses of this money and taxpayers smell it. In going after Santelli the way it did, the White House offends taxpayers too (and deeply offends them). The Gibbs stuff will not play well. Gibbs will not wear well either. They’ve got to throw him under the bus. He can join the rest.
Also there is a weird bunker mentality considering how new the Administration is. Obama went after Limbaugh for no good reason right off the bat. They are trying to create bogeymen and they’ve hardly been in office. This is not good. It totally undermines Obama’s “brand” as optimistic. It would be like Coca Cola telling its customers to F off.
Some one forgot to point out how Keyes, ended up being the default candidate. because Blair
Hull and Jack Ryan, were forced out of the race, because of divorce records revealed by
the LA Times and Chicago Tribune. Just like he ran unopposed in ‘95,challenging the signatures
of all his opponents. 2000 was a close call, losing to Rush, but he redrew the districts to cover for that eventuality. Hence the danger of his control of the Census, instead of the Commerce Department
Feb 20, 2009 - 10:04 pm 107. AST:
Maybe we are the ones WE’VE been waiting for. The more I think about these insulting and arrogant spending bills, the more angry I get. I’ve never liked confrontations and contention, but maybe that’s why leftist revolutionaries put so much stock in marches and demonstrations.
Maybe it’s that, or maybe we were too trusting that the wisdom of the electoral process would provide the right leaders.
Whatever the reason, conservatives have been too passive, too long. We’ve hurt ourselves by internecine squabbles. But right now, I think that the swing voters who thought how nice it would be if we elected our first African American president aren’t quite so sure any more.
Next time look for an African American with some common sense.
(Oh, and if you think I’m a racist, I’m not. I just don’t want to be a coward by avoiding the subject of race.)
Feb 20, 2009 - 10:19 pm 108. Gary Rosen:
What was with post 80? I think I may have seen it before it was taken down. If it’s the one I’m thinking of, I actually found it mildly amusing. As the saying goes, “we’re not laughing with you, we’re just laughing near you”.
It is time for capitalists to reject the socialistic Obama agenda and embrace the things America was founded on. Rick’s passion mirrors 92% of the hard-working, mortgage-paying, sacrificing Americans. This is just the tip of the iceberg for what Obama plans for America. We can’t just let him steam roll over us.
Does anyone else think that calling the Obmanation’s agenda “socialist” is incorrect?
What I see is classic fascism right out of Mussolini’s play book. Is it that “fascism” has for so long, erroneously, been attributed to the right that we’re stuck with inapt words when we need them?
Look up corporatism and see if that doesn’t look a much closer match.
Tea parties are all very well but why is it necessary beyond the corruption of the Congress? In part, surely, it is because the home buyer has, at foreclosure, no interest in the property, which I find truly incredible. Why, at that point, has he or she not a proportion (based upon money paid over several even many years) of the value of the property? It’s simply incredible.
I will help, will you? somebody stop talking and get us out there in droves. Or be overcome.
