Good News from Lebanon – but not to the Huffington Post

March 8 coalition – featuring those Neanderthal Islamofascists at Hezbollah – has apparently lost the election in Lebanon to a pro-Western group under Saad Hariri, the son of assassinated (by Hezbollah or the Syrians or both) Lebanese PM Rafiq Harri: Celebratory gunfire rattled through Beirut and fireworks exploded into the sky after the Western-backed coalition declared victory.

People waving the national flag and the blue banners of coalition leader Saad Hariri’s party paraded through the streets of the capital as results emerged from closely-fought election.

“Congratulations to you, congratulations to freedom, congratulations to democracy,” a triumphant Mr Hariri told cheering supporters as he claimed victory for his anti-Syrian coalition.

“This is a big day in the history of democratic Lebanon.

“There is no winner and loser in these elections, the only winner is democracy and Lebanon,” he added, calling on his supporters to refrain from provoking the rival camp.

Well, if there is a loser, we might have to say it’s the fuddy-duddy Huffington Post, which yesterday published a piece by one Stephen Zunes, chastising the likes of Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden for telling the Lebanese how to vote:

As senators, both Biden and Clinton insisted that this diverse coalition was somehow controlled by Iran and/or Syria. In reality, there is little evidence to suggest that Syrian and Iranian influence on the populist Shia party and its allies is any greater than U.S. influence on some of Lebanon’s other political factions.

Say what? Rafiq Hariri was assassinated by those goons. Steve Zunes – get a life. Huff Post – get some editors.

Score one for the good guy’s.

In 1983 I was in high school, and one of my friends was in the marine quarters that was blown up by that truck bomb. Fast forward to June 1984, I joined the marines for nothing more than to make sure my friend did not die in vain. I am glad to see that his and all the others sacrifice was not in vain.

The freedom of others has always been one of the most important goals of this nation, I just hope we don’t cut and run now as we did in Vietnam for the sake of a bunch of lib. cry babies who still don’t understand that we as troops are there because we believe in what we are doing.

As I understand it, the key or “swing” vote
fell to the Lebanese Christians. (Maybe a Druze or three involved.)

Now it is not surprising that these, along with many Lebanese Muslims, are not fond
of anything Syrian as Syria has spent much time looting Lebanon.

Hezbollah would not exist without Iran and Iran is Persian. Arabs tend to look askance at being ruled, even indirectly, by Persians.

Therefore, having all sorts of Lebanese wanting to vote the right way was to be expected. The question was would they have the nerve to vote that way. They all have to face the possibility of extreme retaliation
for being “politically incorrect”.

Well, they came through. Indicates they think
they will get away with freedom after all.

No doubt some westerners played a role
in passing some credible reassurances along.

Were their names, Clinton, Biden, Kerry and Obama. Possibly. All those worthies did try their best and should be commended.

On the other hand, the names Petraeus, Netanyahu, and Bush may have helped enable
a favorable outcome over a period of years.

The Man From Midland looks like he done right well, after all.

Amazing, the Leb people stepped up to that “Braveheart” T-shirt faith “Freedom”. Did better than us, insisting on a circular firing squad of conservatve factions, destroying the Reagan coalition and inficting Obi Iwon on ourselves. I doubt that the Syrian, Iranian or local Hez goons are going to give it up; frankly there’s way to much wealth to be made in atrocities, genocide and yer basic Chicago corruption.

I guess for individuals like Mr Zunes it is only right that Lebanon continue to be “protected” by beneficient Syria. How dare we interrupt what is only practical. By the tone of his piece (and the gist of his Bio) he is a terrorist “enabler”. Perhaps one day to have his day in the sun, but not today. The people of Lebanon won the day in spite of people like him.

Plain English: U.S. influence is the equivalent of Iranian influence.

Last night HuffPo did decide to celebrate the election results, with this headline: “The Obama Effect? Pro-Western Majority Declares Victory Over Hezbollah In Lebanon”.

So democracy is good if Obama can get the credit for it? Or something.

The Mar 14 coalition is OK but in reality it will be a national govt with lots and lots of Hezbollah influence.

Putting aside Obama for a minute – because, to be frank, he’s done zero to get involved with this development, so therefore he deserves no lauds – what is up with the MSM reporting on the issue? CNN devotes one link to it “below the fold” i.e. below the top headlines that garner attention at the top of their page. Once you’re in the story, it’s substantial (by the standards of other stories on that site), but you don’t see it immediately, and it’s given as much emphasis as the Air France crash and a story of former drug addicts in triathalons. MSNBC doesn’t have anything at all, at least at the time I’m looking at it (9:20ish AM, EDT). NYTimes, to their credit, puts it on the front page in the center. It’s under 3 bigger stories, but it’s there.

I’m struck by how downplayed this seems in the standard news media. Maybe it’s still early in the reporting cycle? I hope that’s the reason.

I don’t recall the same concern for outside intrusion when a British rag encouraged Americans to vote for Kerry in the 2004 election. I guess it all depends on who benefits from that influence.

Woohoo! Another blow to the islamists! And the Huff and Puff is a joke. Didn’t one of their regular writers go insane and kill their lesbian wife with a screwdriver? Good lord… And aren’t they the leftist moonbat blog that had articles written by a writer who was running around stealing McCain campaign signs and descring how exciting it was and how the readers should do the same? And he was a grown man! And aren’t they the communist leftist blog that had the domestic terrorist and Obama close friend Bill Ayers write articles on their blog? And I could have sworn that they let a hamas or hezbollah representative write on their blog. It just goes to show you just how messed up the leftist mainstream media is when people like Katie Couric write for a blog like that and Huff and Puff writers get invited to White House press briefing to be called on by Obama HIMSELF. What a disgusting joke of a blog.

Jun 8, 2009 - 4:41 pm 31. jacksonhunted:

The HuffPo needs an outlet for all its unexpended Bush hatred. Someone must have their venom spewed at them, otherwise that cesspool will implode. And, of course, it will implode along with the Olbermanns and Dowds unless the GOP gets off the carpet and returns to power, which appears increasingly likely. The question is whether the hate factories can keep running until then.

Thank you for your support. I am now how ever retired, but as we say once a Marine always a Marine.

I would have to say that my biggest concern in my personal life how ever is my daughter who is presently in the Naval Academy in Annapolis she will be graduating next year as a Marine Lt. and her Commander And Chief will be of course, Obama. That scares me more than any thing else.

I am proud of every one of our guys and gals out there doing the job that nobody else wants to do. We dare not forget their mother and fathers. I know if it was not for my mother and father and the things they taught me I would not have survived it.

Thank you again.

Jun 8, 2009 - 9:18 pm 36. Chileno:

Check out this pathetic attempt to steal this amazing victory of the Lebanese people, and credit it to none other than Joe Biden:

http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/mesh/2009/06/bidens-hardball-pays-off-in-lebanon/

This article, from the Middle East Strategy at Harvard, alleges that the reason Hezbollah was defeated in yesterday’s Lebanese elections was not because of internal politics, nor the fact that Hezbollah went on a violent rampage through Beirut last year (which may have worried more than a few Christian swing voters). No, the reason why Hezbollah was defeated was… because of Biden’s surprise visit to Lebanon last May! Yes, because his threat to cut off US financial assistance was enough to sway undecided Christians, who seem to have “gotten the message.”

This is such a grasping at straws that even the comment section seems more substantive than the article itself. By this guy’s logic, we could make half the world turn on a dime, simply by threatening to “review” our financial ties. I wonder how favorable this article would’ve been if, instead of Biden, it would’ve been Dick Cheney trying to strong arm foreign citizens into voting for a pro-US candidate…

Jun 8, 2009 - 10:49 pm 39. Chileno:

If Allah was on the Islamists’ side, how would you explain Israel? How would you explain a rag-tag group of Jews defeating army after army of Arabs? It calls to question their entire belief system. That’s why the mere existence of Israel is so terrifying to them, and why they will never stop fighting for its destruction.

Jun 10, 2009 - 10:44 am 41. Jean-elie:

I don’t wanna burst anyone’s bubble but the victory only secures the status quo, it doesn’t solve anything yet. In other words, it just made sure things didn’t get worse. I’m Lebanese and i voted for the march 14th alliance, so the victory is good news, but the fact of the matter is that Hezbollah still has its weapons and their coalition forms more than a third of parliament. Their rag-tag local axis of evil, which includes the Lebanese communist party and the social-nationalist revolutionary party, which is basically a crypto-nazi group (That’s right folks, Islamism, Fascism and Communism: The great evils of our times all bunched up into one putrid mass of obscurantism. Crows of a feather flock together.) is still going to be a force to be reckoned with in the political life of the country. Still, it is a step forward. There was no bloodshed either, and that is surely a cause for optimism.
