OSLO, October 9 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – In an update, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee has announced they have rescinded their awarding of this year’s prize to United States President Barack H. Obama. The Committee took this action in responding to criticism that their website states the deadline for Peace Prize nominations was February 1, 2009, which gave Obama less than two weeks in office before being nominated. Accordingly, the Committee has decided to give the award to its runner-up – US Representative Charles Rangel of New York.

Oct 9, 2009 - 7:44 am 5. David Thomson:Barack Obama is making Jimmy Carter seem like another Ronald Reagan. He literally believes the United States is the greatest threat to world peace. At the end of the day, we are the aggressors and our enemies are merely responding to our alleged vile actions. Obama is a self-hating American. This is the only reason why he is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

Oct 9, 2009 - 8:20 am 8. Talnik:I think they originally bestowed the award on Mr. Obama due to his apparent lack of self-esteem.

Oct 9, 2009 - 8:32 am 10. Joe:Why not Oprah? It’s all about the O! Seriously, though, if the Nobel committee were not left-wing and gave the award based on merit, George W. Bush would win for his efforts at reducing AIDS in Africa. So what if he also presided over two wars? The Nobel Peace Prize itself was founded by the inventor of dynamite.

Found this interesting in light of the Dalai Lama snub this week. It must be a great time to be Chinese, mainland that is.

Oct 9, 2009 - 9:53 am 18. Cinabar:The reputation of the Nobel Peace Price has been diminishing for some time. This recent award to a manifestly unqualified recipient is a further debasing of what was once a prestigious honor. More than ever, the Peace Prize is being regarded by most as a patently obvious left-wing political accolade and not a true reflection of its original intent. Forget the Nobel peace price and set your sights on a real awards that are totally devoid of favoritism, partisanship, and political bias……the Academy Awards.
Oct 9, 2009 - 9:59 am 19. Cinabar:Ops. Peace Prize….not price.

You made our day.
Hilarious…. but too true.

Oct 9, 2009 - 10:30 am 23. Edmund Burke:Speaking of Academy Awards, this Award, judging it somewhat seriously for what it actually says, is like awarding the Best Picture Oscar to someone just announcing an idea for the treatment of a screenplay, not yet written. With movies maybe the thing never gets made. But with President Obama, when he actually completes his full term, whether its 4 years or 8, will have written the actual history of his Presidency, for good or ill. Let’s hope it lives up to what the Committee, based on a few weeks in office, thinks it will mean. In short let’s hope its 1816 or 1866 or 1946 right now, and not 1913 or 1938.
Oct 9, 2009 - 10:35 am 24. Jungus:Maybe Barry got the prize because it was too late to give it to Mohammad Atta et al?
Oct 9, 2009 - 10:40 am 25. Gary Ogletree:I protest. When did Charlie ever suck up to all the dirt bags and euro trash in the world? Why not give it to Adam Clayton Powell, the man Honest Charlie took out as a reform candidate? Powell was much more a fun guy and he looked sharper than sharp in a Cadillac convertible with that big hat.
Oct 9, 2009 - 10:41 am 26. dck:I actually read this as straightforward, late-breaking news until the last line.
That’s how surreal it is for Obama to win the Nobel Peace Prize for…nothing. The mind rebels. I thought Limbaugh was joking this morning when he started talking about it.
By all logic, the Nobel Committee MUST come to its senses at some point, see the magnitude of its folly, and correct it in some manner to avoid becoming a worldwide laughing stock.
Nope; not in this world.
O.k., then why not Bill Ayers as Nobel Laureate for Literature, Ghost Fiction?
Oct 9, 2009 - 10:48 am 27. Bill:Hahahahaha!
Oct 9, 2009 - 10:52 am 28. Wil:This means that the Nobel committee nominated, and possibly selected Obama, even before he was elected or sworn in as president. I hope the exact timing of these things is made public soon.
ISome late breaking news: Obama’s dog was just awarded the Pulitzer Prize!
Oct 9, 2009 - 11:11 am 29. Valjean:#23 EBurke zeroes in nicely. The odd thing about this “prize” is that it’s apparently awarded on the basis of what the committee *hopes* will happen in the *future* with a particular individual. Unlike any other award of which I’m aware, this one is *not* for any particular accomplishment; they’re bestowing an “award” based on “vision”. It’s like some kind of weird geo-political wish.
Nobel committee chairman Thorbjorn Jagland is on record with the Obama choice: “If you look at the history of the Peace Prize, we have, on many occasions, tried to ENHANCE what many personalities are TRYING to do.” (Emphasis mine.) Sure explains Yassar Arafat.
Oct 9, 2009 - 11:11 am 30. DavidN:23. Edmund Burke:

Yeah, let me make a suggestion, Edmund. DON’T give them any ideas. The Academy is more partisan than the Nobel committee and they are essentially shameless when it comes to promoting their own political agendas.
Oct 9, 2009 - 11:32 am 31. Mike K:The lefties are ecstatic about this award and you are no doubt on the “racist” list forever. If anyone ever doubted that the left prefers the appearance to the performance, this should settle that question.
Oct 9, 2009 - 12:17 pm 32. E.M.H.:Because it sums my feelings up, I need to steal something from another forum I play in:
“In keeping with their lofty standards, the Nobel Prize Committee has announced the following Nobel Prizes for 2009:
Economics: Bernard Madoff
Chemistry: Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons
Medicine: Jenny McCarthy
Physics: Steven E. Jones
Literature: Sylvia Browne “
Oct 9, 2009 - 12:34 pm 33. Michael:Geez these guys have such a sense of humor. Why not award it posthumorously to Hitler?
After Gore won it, the value placed on such an august prize, makes it priceless.
You can actually cast a write in vote for Obama to win the Heisman on ESPN.
Send emails to the Vatican to urge cannonization.
Oct 9, 2009 - 12:48 pm 34. David Thomson:The Democrats are going to use Obama’s Nobel Prize to excuse their inability to pass any major domestic legislation. They will argue that bitter and revengeful Republicans threw too many monkey wrenches into the works.
Oct 9, 2009 - 12:53 pm 35. coisty:If it were for ‘Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance’ would they give it to Obama or Bill Ayers?
I feel sorry for those who make a living as satirists. Nevertheless this administration is becoming comedy gold.
Oct 9, 2009 - 12:57 pm 36. Crusader:In a further annoucement all Nobel Prizes will be awarded to his eminence Barack Hussein Obama. Mmm mmm mmm.
Oct 9, 2009 - 1:50 pm 37. jake:Last week: Laughing about Obama losing the Chicago Olympics.
Oct 9, 2009 - 1:52 pm 38. Victor Erimita:This week: Laughing about Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
Next week: ????
It’s amusing to see so many lefty commenters and pundits clucking about how this is inappropriate, given that he hasn’t done anything. Yet they all voted for and supported him for president. He hadn’t done anything before that either, except talk about aspirations and “changed the tone,” the very thing he supposedly got the Nobel for. But even all these people, who do not recognize their own gullibility in electing this man without portfolio, do recognize the shocking absurdity of granting him the Nobel Prize. It is absolutely from the pages of The Onion.
Oct 9, 2009 - 2:36 pm 39. Barry Dauphin:I think Charilie Rangel gets the Piece (of the action) Prize not Peace Prize.
Oct 9, 2009 - 4:10 pm 40. Rob:I would have thought that the runner-up would have been Acorn (organizations do get the Peace Prize sometimes) — for its tireless efforts to provide employment opportunities for young women.
Oct 9, 2009 - 4:53 pm 41. Wunderful, wunderful, Oslo...:– Norway, Salty Old Queen who when it came to the Nazis fought so poorly and surrendered so swiftly. Dy-No-Mite!
Oct 9, 2009 - 5:59 pm 42. Terrye:After they gave it to Arafat, nothing is really surprising. It is shameful.
Oct 9, 2009 - 8:34 pm 43. Vern:Look, the Nobel Peace Prize is the only Nobel prize where you don’t actually have to accomplish anything to get it. Did Gore stop global warming? Did the Dalai Lama make peace with China? And let’s not forget Le Duc Tho, who at least refused it, probably since he knew he wasn’t after peace but only trying to get the US out of South Vietnam so the North could take over a little later. Obama didn’t ask for the prize, did he? So enough already.
Oct 11, 2009 - 12:32 am 44. Michael Smith:I think they gave this award to Obama in the hope that it would:
1) Torpedo any possibility of his stepping-up the prosecution of the war in Afghanistan, and:
2) Insure that Obama would not consider giving Israel the green light to strike Iran.
My guess is it will work.
Oct 11, 2009 - 4:30 am 45. Chuck D:An empty suit that ran for president and won. Now an empty suit that won, a Peace Prize while attempting to disarm the U.S.A. and continue to keep the bosrders open to all comers legal and illegal. The selection committee must not have any real knowledge of what is happening in the U.S. The economy is suffering, our freedoms are being taken away and our life style is going down hill fast. We need some prize winners yes but not the left leaning, socialist type.
Oct 11, 2009 - 8:37 am 46. cfbleachers:Norwegian leftists cheapened their little act of giving Bush a “kick in the shin” by awarding the now rusty piece of tin to Al Gore.
This time, their target was dignity, fairness, and honor..and it appears they aimed their kick a little higher.
