The Demise of David Letterman
I had a number of exchanges on the Palin-Letterman controversy (see below). Where to start on David Letterman’s attack on Palin on her visit to New York to do charitable work, accompanied by her 14-year-old daughter Willow?
The hypocrisy of the Left that used to monitor slurs about women’s appearances, sick jokes about statuary rape, demonization of women with charges of promiscuity-all this rightly was taboo? But now silence? (But then no one seemed bothered either by the rather shameless instance of plagiarism on the part of Maureen Dowd, the NY Times columnist, who habitually accuses Cheney/Bush/Rumsfeld of lying and other moral lapses.)
The metrosexual, hip David Letterman offered an apology I think that essentially was something along the following lines. Here’s my paraphrase: ‘Sorry, I confused the 14-year-old Willow Palin with the 18-year-old Bristol Plain, so I was wrong for suggesting the younger Palin girl would be “knocked up” during a baseball game with Alex Rodriguez, or draw in Eliot Spitzer for sex, when I really meant that Bristol certainly would.” (Note the silence about calling Governor Palin “slutty” looking. So if some right-wing nut says that Michelle Obama is “slutty” looking, are we to expect no consequences?)
Misopalinism
What it is about Sarah Palin that drives the Left insane? Her charisma? Her authentic blue-collar roots? The accent? Todd? The pregnancies? The ability to galvanize crowds. Joe Biden tried to fake his working class origins, but Palin seems to live, not romanticize, the life of the middle strata, so would not the Left appreciate someone from the non-elite?
I suggest two reasons for the fury of the aristocratic Left. One was Palin’s stance on abortion. In the elite feminist mind, the perfect storm would be for a 40ish career woman, on the upswing of her cursus honorum, getting pregnant and, then, heaven forbid, delivering the child with full fore-knowledge of chromosomal abnormality. Or having her 17-year old come to full term with a child, unmarried, and without money?
The Shadow of Abortion
For most upscale, educated liberals, a daughter’s future career is ruined by pregnancy, and abortion is often the answer. Second, Todd Palin, the Palin accent, the Wasilla connection, the whole notion of Alaska, all this conjured up the elite liberal notion of “trailer trash”-and we all know from Obama’s clingers speech, that the white Christian working class is the last group in America that can be caricatured and slurred with impunity. To the liberal urban elite, poor “whites” are those responsible for racism and other sins associated with the dominant culture, and thus by association taint the white aristocracy unfairly.
Race, again, all the time
I received a lot of angry mail about a recent prediction that the Obama administration would acerbate not diminish racial tensions, by its addiction to identity politics and the constant invocation or racial difference. Nothing since his ascension has disabused me of that observation. Obama himself, in unusual fashion, has given a number of speeches abroad emphasizing his African heritage, his middle name Hussein, and his father’s Muslim’s connection.
We have heard the Attorney General call his countrymen “cowards” for not talking more about racial identity. We have heard our Supreme Court nominee state on repeated occasions that a Latina is intrinsically better at being a judge than a white male counterpart. Now Rev. Wright has reemerged to suggest that Obama will no longer meet with him because “Them Jews ain’t going to let him talk to me ….” (a new book about Obama suggests he and Wright met in secret during the campaign after the Wright racist outbursts).
He’s Back
Note as well, that Wright, in his anti-Semitic diatribe, employs the now customary straw men “they”, which we’ve become well accustomed to. (I note here that what was most disturbing about the Letterman Palin jokes and his “apology” was the audience laughing at his crudity-reminiscent of the standing ovations in the Trinity congregation that met Wright’s profanity, racist outburst, and damning of the United States. This country has a long way to go.)
This racialism will continue. Why? Because Obama discovered long ago than racial identification brings as many dividends as does the content of one’s character or achievement. It is a force multiplier and foolishly left untapped. I fear more, not less, of this, as the tab for Obama’s charge-it economy comes due at about the same time dubious players abroad conclude that serial apologies amount to a green light for adventurism. When his popularity dives, I think critics will be seen as biased and prejudicial.
What was ironic about all Wright’s accusations of Obama’s Jewish hypnosis, was that in just the first six months of his administration Obama has proven to be the most anti-Israeli President since the founding of the Jewish state. Wright should be delighted not disappointed; perhaps his unhappiness is the inability to bask publicly in White House visits, rather than ideological discord.

1. Robert Winkler Burke:Dear VDH,
Your insight and wisdom regarding this creepy culture we in the US live in, is much appreciated.
The problem is that as the national culture goes, so goes the local.
Thus good can be called evil and evil can be called good… in the local criminal justice system; where the memory of logic, truth, justice, liberty and plain old Western Civilization critical thinking is distant or gone entirely.
The result: It is very dangerous to live in a good and non-hypocritical fashion (the old Western Civilization way of well-wishing and honest purveying) because the creepy culture views such as a dangerous counter-trend to be eliminated at all cost.
Just look for court cases giving high esteem to fear’s empowerment. (Divorce court, domestic abuse, stalking, green living, anti-concealed carry citizens concerned over fellow citizens with concealed carry permits, gossip, slander, mysticism and tyranny (through political correct empowerment) of one neighbor hatred of liberty over the other’s neighbor’s liberty!)
Thus, our Founding Father’s liberty is made to be an evil to be eliminated with extreme prejudice. Mostly under the radar. Mostly a fait complete.
In theory, we in the US live under a great constitution. In practice, the unwritten but well-enforced but politically correct constitution actual citizens experience is simply too creepy for words.

Reason died without requiem,
That was the stratagem,
Let it die without news,
To give the innocent bruise.
To hurt the innocent who believe,
Truth and logic would give reprieve,
Against accusations wrong,
When what matters is strong.
Who is strong, who is weak?
The strong will dominate the meek,
The strong will say who is wrong,
Who is wrong will not belong.
Reason died without requiem,
Creepy culture is now the gem,
Salute insanity, and bow down deep,
Hail insanity, for heads to keep.
To keep heads on shoulders, not cut off,
Jun 12, 2009 - 7:46 am 6. tanstaafl:Agree, agree: Mysticism is the best boss!
Mysticism and tyranny has all dominion,
Who, in their right mind, would keep reason?
David Letterman is an insecure little man who is trying to outdo another creepy little man in outrageousness, Bill Maher.
Sarah Palin is too real for the fixed, narrow élitism of the Dowdists (probably even the Quinnists) and other lockstep liberals of the planet.
As for JWright’s very recent comment, he flops around in apparent insecurity after making it. I hope none of the people populating his new gated, suburban Chicago enclave are Jewish.
They might knock the old boy between the eyes with a golf ball.
Jun 12, 2009 - 7:51 am 7. Steve:Absolutely superb essay. You are a light in the darkness. The hypocracy of the left is transparent and shameful. The Zengerle’s of the world are pathetic, moronic apologists. Unfortunately, they are breeding.

You logic stands on its own.
Even liberals know Lettman went way over the line and that he is a scurilous hypocrite. They celebrate it. This is what the country gets when adolescents “win”.
It could well be the US’s demise as a force for good in the world.
Jun 12, 2009 - 7:58 am 10. Meryl:Dr. Hanson, thank you again for documenting the disease that is contemporary culture. It needs to be done.
“In theory, we in the US live under a great constitution.” (1. Robert Winkler Burke)
Having a great constitution doesn’t mean much, does it, when it is no longer considered relevant by the so-called elite.
The Chinese Constitution specifically provides for freedom of religion. Obviously, that hasn’t provided freedom of religion for the Chinese.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:00 am 11. river:Letterman is a prostatitic old fool.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:02 am 12. Stella:I can only speak for myself, but I’ve been very patient with late night comedians waiting for them to start hammering the democratic executive office, the democratic congress, and the mostly democratic senate. Surely, SURELY, there is humor to be found from other than Bush and Palin. C’mon liberals, get a TRUE sense of humor. Let the jokes about Obama and Biden start to flow.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:06 am 13. MikeL:Letterman himself has a son born out of wedlock, and he just married the mother (and his long time paramore). Would he feel it was just a joke if someone made a wisecrack about his “slutty” wife or his “bastard” son?
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:06 am 14. AThinkingPerson:When Obama is relying on the likes of David Letterman to defend him and keep him propped up, well, not much to add to that. I’ve commented before about how Obama is damaging the race relations in this country and find it comforting that I’m not alone in that observation.
Yet more proof that allowing ACORN and the MSM to pick our President was a bad idea.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:08 am 15. Bear:Letterman’s humor (lack of) has become more pronounced of late… he’s a narcissist as well showing hostility towards those that don’t like him during the decline of his career.
I don’t think he was ever that funny, and he isn’t terribly bright either…that’s what writers are for.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:09 am 16. Macko:Dogs bark when they get scared.
I think the left is scared sh&&less of Sarah palin.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:13 am 17. rocketeer:I’d really like to send him (Letterman) some hate-mail, as well as CBS, but I’m not sure where to send it that would be most effective. Anyone have any ideas?
Letterman is typical of the left. They objectify those that they disagree with, dehumanize them, and then, because they are no longer viewed as equal humans, they can demonize them.
I want to see Todd Palin invited onto the Letterman show. Letterman will look pretty good missing all his front teeth after making another child-rape joke.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:15 am 18. karlstro1:Someone please tell me in anything Letterman said about the rape of an innocent child was funny! I have daughters and this was the most vile, unconscionable attack on national TV on a sibling I think I have ever heard. The moral consious of the Nation is appaling and it is because both sides of the country will not stand up against this kind of repulsive behavior. If Immus can get fired for what he said then certainly the uproar should be the same against Letterman. If not, then Letterman can become the poster child for a doulble standard that is demoralizing America.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:17 am 19. RE:I remember being takijng offence at Letterman the very first time I saw him on TV. It was shortly after Johnny Carson retired. What a contrast! Johnny Carson was pure class. Letterman on the other hand was always trying to get a laugh at somebody else’s expesnse, through ridicule and humiliation.
At the time I sense this was a cultural marker. The baton had been passed to a much meaner, more cynical, self-righteous, and narcissistic generation.
American pop culture has been degenerating ever since. Today, it is an embarrassment. I leave my television off.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:19 am 20. Bret:I think VDH has missed the point of Letterman’s jokes.
It is NOT news that someone in show business makes an intensely rude, crude, lewd, insulting, disgusting and/or despicable comment regarding an entirely inappropriate subject. Indeed, if we demanded an apology every time that happened, we’d never get anything else done.
The point is that Letterman’s comment is a shot across the bow. He is saying, “Governor Palin, if you so much as poke your nose outside the great State of Alaska, we will insult and smear and humiliate and hound you and your family and your community and anybody who thinks or even looks like you until you feel so degraded and miserable that you run back home with your tail between your legs and never, ever come back. We hate you, we fear you, we loathe you, and we will stop at nothing to destroy you.”
That’s the point.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:20 am 21. sefton:Letterman’s own child was born out of wedlock.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:32 am 22. Terry:Did he hide his wife from Spitzer too? Did A-Rod have ago at her also?
Creepy 62 year old men who have rape fantasies about 14 OR 18 year old girls don’t belong on television. They should be wearing a ankle monitor if not in prison.
When Sarah Palin was nominated for vice president, I investigated a small amount about her background. (Relatively the same amount as learning that BHO had no birth cert, had close relationship with America haters, Wright and Ayers, and his extreme socialist plans.) I was attracted by the type of person I believed Sarah Palin to be. There is a chance I missed important aspects that would affect my judgment, but declined to further investigate because of the left wing/media attacks upon Mrs. Palin and her very American family. Now Letterman. He continues and expands upon the left’s attacks, but has nothing new to add because there’s no there there. I admire Sarah Palin and would support her if she chooses to run for any national office with no reservations about her intellect. Let these Harvard/Yale elite types join Shakespeare’s lawyers, first in line.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:34 am 23. J. Robertson:Bravo !!!
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:36 am 24. Noesis Noeseos:I have never watched Letterman. I can’t understand why he has gathered such a large audience and why what he says draws so much public attention, unless there be multitudes as sick as VDH shows Letterman himself to be. This must be the case, else such a mendacious, resentment-pandering radical like Obama would have never been elected. I must sadly conclude that the health of the republic is not looking good at all.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:37 am 25. Scott E:I remember watching Letterman in college….20 years ago.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:37 am 26. Ms. Attitude:An un-edgy man trying to be edgy at this point of his career. The truly great ones retire before it all slips away.
All I can say is that I’m thankful I live in a country where you can talk trash and not get arrested, for now. Would Obama’s Fairness Doctrine require Letterman to say an equally nasty joke about the Obama girls?
We don’t need laws to keep our entertainers in line. Remember, they work for us and we can fire them by not giving them any business. Letterman is on his way out, I don’t know of anybody who watches him. I never would’ve known about his stupid statement until the press picked up on it. Who are his advertisers? Write them letters and let them know they won’t get your business until they drop him. If they get enough he’ll be bye bye. Take action against him.
Sheesh…is your real name Mustard? You keep signing off with: Mustard…You’re wierd.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:38 am 27. blotto:Sheesh #8: So you are drawing a moral equivalence between something said about adults in a non-sexual nature and something said about an under-aged girl in a perverted, sexual way? Do I understand you? If that is your defense then you are too twisted for me to debate.
And if you are okay with saying those things about Willow Palin, then put your full name and address here and say something equally disgusting about Obama’s children.

Jun 12, 2009 - 8:43 am 29. davimcg:Sheesh, Watched all three videos and I do not see the connection. Not one of them contained jokes about the raping of a politician’s 14-year-old daughter. As far as th gay stuff, I’m with Obama, marriage should be between one man and one woman.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:44 am 30. Stephanie Llod:Isn’t It funny how we get upset at the commentators and talk show hosts who display our weakness. Sarah Palin put her 17 year unmarried pregnant daughter on National Television, and we must have sympathy for her. Why? And to top it off her daughter has the child gets on TV and declares it was a mistake. Then her boyfriend gets on two (2) NATIONAL TELEVISON programs and tells the world he slept in the same room and house with her (Sarah Palin) 16 year old daughter. Sorry folks, lets be truthful, if that was Mr. Obama’s black daughter what would have happened? Be honest with yourselves.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:44 am 31. Anonymous:I wish I could punch Letterman in the mouth! You don’t reason with idiots of his ilk, you smack them down and keep them down – that’s all a creep like Letterman understands.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:45 am 32. Juvenal:#13 Bret:
That’s very true. Letterman’s disgusting “jokes” are just a parting shot at Palin, as a reminder (as if she needed one) of the really BIG salvos fired at her by almost the entire media universe last fall. I’ve never seen someone hounded or persecuted like that.
And it was effective as hell.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:51 am 33. baluc/ka:You make reference to Letterman and the aging boomer culture, but he didn’t write that material. Some group of twenty year olds did.
Ultimately he said it, but he wasn’t the first to think it.
I’m worried that when these writers come into their own, the culture will get cruder, coarser and contemptuous.
For their part, they’re worried that Palin will be the ascendant one.
So, let the games begin.
My money is on Palin.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:53 am 34. Delia:Just more proof that the liberals who are ’supposedly’ pro women’s rights are complete and utter hypocrites in the worst sense of the word. In a Liberal’s mind, if Palin’s daughter would have had an abortion then she wouldn’t be labeled a ’slut’. See? Murder your offspring and you get to pass go.
-And, Liberals are Pro-Rape as long as the Rapee is a Republican. So funny. Ha-ha.
How dare Palin give birth to a handicapped child? She could have had that baby sucked out of her in minutes. Done deal. That stupid, heartless woman. How can she live with herself? Now we’ll have another member of the ‘Special Olympics’ that DohBama merrily jokes about.
Whores? Yeah, right.
Sorry, Dave. I’m just not feelin’ the gallows humor.
The Liberal mind is truly whack.

Or having her 17-year old come to full term with a child, unmarried, and without money?”
I’ve been trying to answer that question myself. The vitriolic hatred of this seemingly all-American woman and her quite normal family is truly curious. This explanation scratches the itch, but it still does not quite answer the question for me. Is it that she dared to take up opposition to the Dear Leader? Or because the Left could not truly unleash its fury on McCain, the war hero?
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:56 am 36. whataloadacrap08:Letterman is an overripe juvenile delinquent who deserves a good punch in the mouth, and Jeremiah Wright is a big mouthed a$$hat who needs his teeth rearranged too. You don’t reason with idiots of this ilk, you smack them down and keep them down. Intellectual, moral, and philosophical discussions have no effect on idiots who are too stupid to understand them – that’s why God invented baseball bats! Todays word of the day is, pain.

What makes you think this is the case? It’s not as if the left goes out of their way to seek her out.
I thought she had her 15 minutes already.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:05 am 39. Sherab Zangpo:The mere fact that we are talking about such low level attacks against Governor Palin tells us how much damage the radical-commie left has already caused to the fabric of our society: and this is just a few months into the new regime !
Governor Palin is attacked because she doesn’t play the game played by ALL politicos and commentators in Washington, she is not soft, she is not “the king’s opposition”: in this way, she is THE dissent that the radical-commies have never tolerated and will never tolerate.
The radical-commies are busy building the road from where we are to Paradise-On-Earth and in their opinion every and any dissent can only be psychosis or crime or both.
It’s the old stalinistic story.
How far and how deep the prosecution of DISSENT will go depends only from how strong the resistance against the regime will be: the stronger the resistance , the safer will be our Freedom.
And the psychological violence of the attacks against Governor Palin is just an appetizer for people who have grown to hate America in their pseudo-churches and their pseudo-universities.
It is the same psychological violence used by the media to celebrate the late-term abortion “doctor” and to FORGET the American Hero killed by a domestic muslim terrorist.
What I fear is that all this implicit and explicit psychological violence will turn into brute violence against all dissent.
Europe has seen that when the “teachings” of the sixties turned into the terrorism of the Seventies and the Eighties.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:09 am 40. Alana:“So follow the additional sick logic there: having one illegitimate son naturally implies inherent promiscuity of the sort that would send you down to the dugout to have sex with a baseball player or draw in a frequent patron of prostitutes.”
Which would, by the way, make Letterman a slut, too, since he had an illegitimate son whose mother he just recently married.
Or – can only women be sluts? Oh yes, how could I forget. I guess that means it’s Letterman’s new wife who is the slut.

Moral equivalency?
You left out Axl Rose, any number of hip hop artists and much of the entertainment community.
Letterman is a professional comedian. None of the people you cited are. Check out Lenny Bruce (whether or not you like what he did) and how he used his monologues to build to and then support a controversial point. Letterman did not do this because it is not his style, and he did see Palin jokes of any sort non-controversial. He deals in the immediate impact of what are basically one liners. There’s little or no background given, and in the Palin case, if he had gone the Bruce route, he would have realized quickly that this was not a good riff.
As it turned, out, he did realize it and backed off, later, and with the technique of watch this hand while the real action is over here in this hand. Nonetheless, he did address what he did, and did call it a mistake, creepy or not.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:22 am 44. Libertyship46:What bothered me most about the David Letterman fiasco was the reaction of his audience after he told the “jokes.” There was no booing, just a lot of laughing and applauding. So if you’re a Republican female with a family, you can be called a slut and your kids whores and that’s OK with people today. Oh, sorry, Letterman thought he was calling Palin’s 18-year-old daughter a whore, not her 14-year-old daughter. My, that does make a difference, doesn’t it? Americans should be ashamed of themselves. I do know that when Don Imus made an off-the-cuff racial comment, he was thrown off the air. But call a sitting governor of a large American State a slut and her daughter a whore, and people laugh and applaud. Letterman should be forced to reseign, no two ways about it. If any standards still exist on the public (yes, that’s right, public) airwaves, Letterman should be held to the same standards as Imus. And to those people who even thought those “jokes” were even remotely funny, shame on you. So much for Obama and his ilk bringing in a new age of “civility.”
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:30 am 45. Frank:If Bristol Palin is a “Slut” and a “Whore” for getting pregnant, than so are all those poor, black innercity girls are baby daddys to 3 different guys, who are sucking the welfare tit while popping out an 8th kid, but of course don’t say that, it would be racist!
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:31 am 46. Harry:Everyone is outraged, but no one commenting will do anything.
It was the same for the Playboy article about “Hatef*****g” conservative women. A lot of drivel, but no plan for retribution. Letterman and the Liberals want to sexually objectify and demean women, but no one throws pies in their faces or tries to embarrass them in public.
Conservative women should target Letterman, the Playboy author, and the ultimate creepy old Liberal, Hugh Hefner, with public confrontations, protests and picketing, in public places and put the video on You-tube.
Otherwise, if you are not going to play, shut up and get off the field.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:34 am 47. Alana:That’s very true. Letterman’s disgusting “jokes” are just a parting shot at Palin, as a reminder (as if she needed one) of the really BIG salvos fired at her by almost the entire media universe last fall. I’ve never seen someone hounded or persecuted like that.

—-
The thing to remember is when they do this to her, they do this to us. It is a warning to us. If the powers-that-be (political or cultural) don’t like what you say, they will do their best to ruin your life.
In other words, you don’t have a right to speak up with your opinions. If you do, and they don’t like your opinions, they WILL make you regret speaking up, by painting you as a person beneath contempt. Not worthy of any dignity. As not even human. And do it in the grossest, most vile ways.
I can’t imagine very many people managing to stand up against the stuff that has been thrown Sarah Palin’s way. That alone garners her my admiration.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:35 am 48. RJ:I remember when I first saw Letterman. One of his basic routines was to phone an innocent person and torment them for the amusement of his audience.
I was taken back by the sheer meanness of the bits. The people on the phone were almost always naive or trying to be helpful, and the joke was “let’s have a laugh at the rube’s expense”.
I wouldn’t mind prank phone calls to people who were public or somehow aggressively offensive, but the ones I remember from his show were just mean-spirited mockery of innocent people.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:35 am 49. Self-hating Boomer:I’d never really considered that before, because I don’t think in racial, tribal terms like they do. But that makes a lot of sense. They’re not embarrassed by minority underclasses, because they’re different tribes. But since they’re so race-conscious, uncouth (or uncool) whites bother them to no end.
That implies that they believe that they own the white tribe. They have no right to dictate anything to non-whites, but they have unlimited right to dictate everything to whites. And when some uppity trailer trash doesn’t follow their dictates, it’s a personal insult.
This explains a lot. Such primitive sophisticates we have.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:36 am 50. Self-hating Boomer:And they’re not now? The Republicans, and anyone else who chooses to oppose 0bama can expect this. This is obvious. If Hillary were elected, you could expect her to play the sex card. This is the terrain of the theater. Get used to it.
At some point though, this crying “racist” will get to as effective as the boy crying “wolf”. They can only play that card so many times, and it eventually expires.
There is no realistic alternative. You either gird your loins and prepare to be called a racist, or you give up your birthright as an American citizen to the Chicago mob.
Really, there is life after being called a racist.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:44 am 51. jim:Me thinks MR Letterman has a serious crush on the Gov of Alaska. And just like a boy in grade school who has a crush on a fellow student, instead of being mature enough to handle it and simply tell her he likes her, he instead pulls her hair and says cruel things so she will notice him. As a junior high teacher Ive seen it a 1000 times.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:49 am 52. Fragmentarian:Letterman, to be consistent with his reasoning, must tell a similar joke about one or both (does it matter) of Barry and Michelle’s girls. If he does, I’ll accept his rationale while I would still question his sense of decency and would still dislike the making of inappropriate sexual jokes about children. If not, he’s proven to be a merely a pro-Obama tool and not an edgy comedian, at all. Over to you Dave.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:50 am 53. tanstaafl:I think the comments about a desperate, fading “comedian” are right on.
Reportedly, Letterman…
Recently “legitimized” his own 5 YO son
I wonder how he would take jokes about that.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:53 am 54. Free Hat:Hey, if Sarah Palin didn’t want America to joke about her barefoot, pregnant and stupid teenage daughter, then she probably should not have used her as a campaign prop and forced her on national television every 5 minutes to spout her puerile views on sex and abstinence.
If you don’t want your daughter in the public eye, don’t throw her into the national spotlight to bolster your campaign!
If you don’t want your daughter discussed in a sexual manner, don’t make her talk about her sex life on the national stage throughout your campaign!
What a bunch of morons.
If Palin had kept her daughters out of the spotlight, we wouldn’t even be disussing them right now. But Sarah Palin is an idiot and a bad parent who decided that her vice-presidential aspirations were more important than than her family, and thought she could successfully use her pregnant daughter as a pro-life prop on the campaign trail. And now, after throwing her daughter to the media wolves out of sheer political ambition, she’s now complaining that the wolves are biting.
And you wonder why the majority of us think she’s just a intellectually-challeneged opportunistic buffoon. Well look no further.

Point understood, but let us draw attention to Todd’s eskimo heritage, and factor that in. Certainly, if Governor Palin were a leftist Democrat, we’d be reminded about that element in every news story. All that race and gender stuff actually weighs against you if you’ve got an (R) tagged onto your title.
In fact, the left can attack any protected minority without consequence- recall how they treated Condeleeza Rice. Honestly, it is disgusting.
For more evidence of how the culture is declining, consider the photo released of Mr. Obama with his feet on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. No self-respecting office holder would do that, not to mention let a photo of it be released.
Best regards, Peter Warner.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:58 am 56. Old Soldier:I don’t get offended by edgy or profane comics (not that Letterman is much of a comic). I prefer my comics as politically incorrect as possible. They should have us laughing at the establishment and the rules.
I dismiss Letterman as a gutless hack because he (or his writers) would never make that joke about anyone on the left – maybe Obama’s daughters.
No guts, politically correct hack.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:58 am 57. Self-hating Boomer:Back on the “white tribe” thing:
Am I allowed to be embarrassed by other white males? Or do you have to be one of the “cool” ones?
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by Letterman, because he’s a general-purpose asshat.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by Gore, because he’s an opportunistic hustler.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by Ted Kennedy, because he’s a drunk, a misogynist, a coward, and a manslaughterer.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by Clinton, because he’s a rapist and a purgerer.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by Biden, because he’s a dope.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by 90% of the white males in Hollywood, because they’re cowards and wieners.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by 98% of the white males in the media, because they’re liars and rather dim, to boot.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by 98% of white male college professors, because they’ve surrendered the notion of open and free debate to the consensus enforcers.
As a white male, I’m embarrassed by Carter, because he’s senile, and doesn’t know when to sit down, shut up, and die.
Etc. I could go on, but there are only so many bits in the internet.
Jun 12, 2009 - 9:59 am 58. NCBob:It’s ALL about concern for the children! Is Letterman’s young son safe? Where are the voices calling on Child Protective Services to step in and ensure the boy’s safety. If Letterman is verbalizing his fantasies about a 14 year old girl, maybe, he has fantasies about other perversions. It is the state’s responsibility to ensure that the boy is safe!!!

Obama is said to have 30 connections on his Blackberry. Would one suppose that those characters are on his top-30 list of advisors? I would be fairly sure that Palin is not. Would the freedom of information act give us Obama’s contacts? We could always make up said list.
Jun 12, 2009 - 10:09 am 61. FLMom:Some of you suggest that since others have made comments in bad taste, it’s fine for Letterman to make despicable comments about a 14-year-old child.
By that reasoning, if someone were to murder the family down the road, I guess it would be ok to murder your family too? Your logic seems that absurd. It is at the level of kindergarteners who whine, he said it too.
Until we say enough is enough, stop watching this trash, stop patronizing the sponsors, it will only get worse.
Misogynistic jokes and sexual comments about children are not acceptable. Ever! The public airwaves belong to the people. If we will not say enough is enough, then don’t act surprised when this trend becomes much worse.
Jun 12, 2009 - 10:30 am 62. J.E. Dyer:Bret #20 — I don’t imagine VDH missed anything at all. He just wasn’t here to comment, today, on that aspect of the situation (Letterman’s implied threat to Palin if she shoots for national office).
I appreciate the Professor’s, well, chivalry, in pointing out that we are an increasingly worthless society, if it really is no big deal for people’s teenage daughters to be the butts of sexual-content “jokes.”
He’s right — and it matters. I don’t know about you, but POLITICAL context aside, I would be every bit as offended if Letterman had, in fact, made this “joke” about the child of a liberal Democrat.
Of course, if Palin had just had the good sense to be a wise Latina, none of this would have happened.

IMHO, Todd Palin should go on Letterman’s show, grab ol’ Dave by the throat and tell him that if he ever makes a wise crack against a family member again, he’ll very much regret it. A nice goober into Dave’s eye would be nice, too. Then, calmly walk off the stage. It’s too bad dueling is illegal now. My money would be on Todd.
All together, Dave needs an ass-whoopin’. A real good one! Maybe that would show him that there can be consequences for impugning the honor of a lady!

David Letterman is a has-been. He was a has-been, IMHO, ever since he first started in show business.

Jun 12, 2009 - 10:43 am 67. Ron Kean:Thank you as always Professor,
A small ray of light has come to us. A new personality named John Zigler laughs at the left’s nonsense. He’s quick and on the way up.
Yesterday, I saw Karl Rove let Maureen Dowd have it. These attacks are getting in-your-face, hilarious, condescending, biting, and relevant.
They’re doing it in a way Rush, Sean, et. al. haven’t seemed to be able to do…with a true sense of humor and a good belly laugh. Ann Coulter and Mark Steyn have been doing it for some time.
And I’m happy Palin is being catapulted into the lime light. It’s great that she’s in the news everyday with righteous indignation. Dave Letterman in his sleazy way may have helped our cause.
But like the professor said in his excellent NRO article today (Friday), we who point out the lies will be called liars as we wait for the pot to boil over and the tide to turn.

Sheesh I’d drop dead if you ever addressed the argument at issue, instead of playing tit-for-tat like a second grader. Or making believe it’s a non-issue. It is a minor issue, no pun intended, but one that Letterman himself felt compelled to “apologize” for. His jokes have also been denounced by NOW — certainly a first for them when it’s a Republican being slimed.
Furthermore, your statement above is as idiotic and illogical as VDH’s TNR commentator. The Palins — not the posters on this site — were the victims of Letterman’s jokes. You see, unlike your preferred (ie, pampered) “oppressed peoples”, us white trash folk don’t claim victim status unless the barb is directed at us personally, or our whole tribe was slimed intentionally.

Jun 12, 2009 - 10:59 am 72. Harry:Ms. Atitude,
You are on the right track, but there has to be a very public and immediate retaliation (yes, I know, some think we should remain high-minded).
High-mindedness is getting our butts kicked in the struggle for public opinion. And this struggle will always have a circus element to it, let’s use public reprisals to make them think twice.
Thank you for not being like most of the wussies who are commenting on this.
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:01 am 73. Dave the Kapampangan:Jealousy at the hardworking values and success of Jews, Christians, and working class Americans has twisted Letterman and Maher into ugly little Gollum-like men. They simply cannot stomach that traditional values (and not their own “precious” secular ideology) have built alternative success without resorting to postmodern bunk and redistribution– and therefore the little gollums work to mock and undermine traditional foundations, while traveling along with easygoing Americans Frodo and Sam.
Letterman and Maher and similarly hypocritical statists think themselves morally “progressive” enough to mock other people as anti-feminist and anti-minority and anti-free speech. And then they proceed to support the oppression of Muslim women, attack Christian women and young girls with suggestions of rape (See letterman and playboy attacks on conservative women), vindictively take away Miss America crowns, Un-empower and addict minorities to the deblitating downward spiral of welfare, stifle free speech by harrassing voters, refuse to air tea party rebellions and opposing opinions, use the power of the federal government and national network news agencies to dig up dirt on private citizens and launch slanderous television attacks at the reputations of 14-year-old children whose parents they don’t happen to like.
Maher and Letterman can still be part of “their precious” liberal boys network, so long as their oozing hatred and mockery is directed at Jews, Christians, working class Americans and other enemies of the state. But what will happen when they and their pal Reverend Wright are no longer needed by Sauron, who has much more grandiose plans and a really big supply of dupes and fools? Ask Google (antitrust investigation) or the American Jews (Israel thrown to the wolves) who got thrown under the bus after the election, but still can’t quite believe it.

MisterH:It’s probably an utter waste of time to inject any reason into any discussion of what kind of personal criticism one should or should not make against political candidates (See comment #53 as a prime example). Unfortunately too many liberals seem to think any vile personal attack on Gov. Palin and her family is justified simply because they disagree with her political views. One can only imagine what the reaction might have been had Letterman directed the joke at Pres. Obama and his wife and daughters. Actually I can’t imagine simply because it would never happen.

Rationalize it all you want, the fact that Obama (or any other liberal) can bring his or her daughters on the campaign trail…and not be

Alana:
The thing to remember is when they do this to her, they do this to us. It is a warning to us. If the powers-that-be (political or cultural) don’t like what you say, they will do their best to ruin your life.
In other words, you don’t have a right to speak up with your opinions. If you do, and they don’t like your opinions, they WILL make you regret speaking up, by painting you as a person beneath contempt. Not worthy of any dignity. As not even human. And do it in the grossest, most vile ways.
I can’t imagine very many people managing to stand up against the stuff that has been thrown Sarah Palin’s way. That alone garners her my admiration.
and:
Harry:
Everyone is outraged, but no one commenting will do anything.
Otherwise, if you are not going to play, shut up and get off the field.
p.s. not just conservative women but everyone man & woman.

Any “Women’s” organization that sits by silent in the face of these attacks on women should be ashamed of themselves.
There is more to life than being able to get an abortion when ever you feel the need and some aspects of human dignity require people, all people, to stand up for what is right regardless of who it is being wronged.
Too many of the so called “feminist” groups of today are nothing more than a pathetic bunch of single issue hypocrites.
Don’t women understand there is much more on their plate than that one single issue??? (abortion)
That is merely a wedge issue the leftist have used for years to control you as a group.
That is the lefts standard mode of operation.
Wise up ladies, you are being used and abused by the left exactly like most other “Groups” .
But that’s o.k. , just play it off just like when the President calls a female journalist “sweetie” or Letterman decides to get a few laughs by calling you a slut or your underage daughter is simply fodder at his disposal for a few lewd gender based laughs. Or hey it not really murder when some Islamest nut cut’s his wife’s or daughter’s head off because he thinks they disgraced the family, no that’s not a big deal, I mean it was just a woman..
I would hope there were a few in the audience that had the character to get up and walk out after hearing Letterman’s pathetic attack but somehow I doubt it.
Tell me ladies, are the blinders many of you wear worth giving up your human dignity for? Do they give you that much comfort?
Are you that easily bought?
And what does that make you ?
Face it most of you only wish and dream you had 1/10th the character of Gov. Palin,. (males included)
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:17 am 79. Pace:But you know what,
Today is a good day to start to change all that. Just Do It.
“Letterman is typical of the left. They objectify those that they disagree with, dehumanize them, and then, because they are no longer viewed as equal humans, they can demonize them.”
Just insert “right” for “left” and your popular culture demagogue of choice for “letterman”. And then read some of the comments on this website.
Then you have what passes for “intelligent” political conversation in this country. Shame on us all.
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:20 am 80. bubblehead:Several here have said Letterman’s public fantasy was just desserts for Sarah’s using her daughter as a campaign prop. HOGWASH!!! And you know it perfectly well! It wasn’t Sarah Palin who brought her daughter into the political fray, but the MSM. She was “exposed” in an effort to embarrass and discredit Sarah. What people like Sheesh never counted on was for Sarah to stand by her daughter, support her and love her and try to protect her from the soulless jackals like Sheesh for whom there is no limit to how low they will go to destroy a person they disagree with. The reason Letterman has gotten away with his public crudity is that his audience is just like Sheesh; perverse, vile and hypocritical. Ancient Rome, at the height of its decadence was never so corrupt as the American left!
Sheesh, I look forward with gleeful anticipation to the day I realize you no longer pollute this and other sites with your pathetic efforts at “wisdom”! Crawl under a rock where you can putrify annonymously.

Jun 12, 2009 - 11:33 am 82. blotto:Freehat: You calling others morons is the kettle calling the pot black. Letterman’s crude jokes were about Willow the underage, not pregnant daughter of Ms. Palin.
So now wiggle your way out of that one. By the way, like I asked before, since Obama has made his kids part of his presidency, I want you to make a crude, offensive, and perverted joke about them. Ya know, just to show you are not biased in your debate here.
We wouldn’t want to get the idea you are not debating on principles. And if you cannot make a joke about Obama’s kids then you have no right defending Letterman.
PS Don’t forget to add you full name and address with the joke
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:34 am 83. Hotpatch 6:Letterman’s problem is obvious: envy. Have you seen a picture of that woman he is married to? He wishes in his wildest dreams she looked like Sarah Palin!! At least he does not have to worry about her being raped at a ballgame (or anywhere else).
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:34 am 84. gclarke:Free Hat, I don’t think Bristol Palin came out to explain herself until after she was repeatedly attacked, and the father of her child dumped her and then started talking publicly about her. With the 4920 bloggers who have already called you a moron (and counting) and with the far greater silent majority who find your comments to involve “jaw-gaping” stupidity, I happily concur.
To Dave: The “joke” your writers convinced you to read, supposedly about Bristol, was much “funnier” the first 4920 times I heard it. Not as funny the 4921st time, though we can agree it was probably “funnier” this time than it will be the next 4291 times you tell it. Too bad you were ignorantly referencing the wrong daughter.
But you should put your writers in for a Guinness record. With less than ten words (seven I think it was, depending on how many words “knocked-up” is) they, and you as reader, were able to slander four separate individuals (three of them women and I’m not counting Todd) as well as the entire populations of Latin America and Alaska, not to mention all ball players, philanthropic governors, females and teenage females generally. If the Supreme Court did not immunize jerks like you from slander suits by those in the public eye (Willow — you are not in the public eye. Are you listening?) I am not sure the suits would have allowed you to issue such a “wide-net” slander though with so few words. Too bad it was not funny.
I remember when Jack Parr got in trouble for telling a late-night joke with “water closet” in it which is apparantly British for bathroom. I remember he gave a real apology though, as a young boy at the time, I was not sure for what. How we have degenerated since then. Thanks, Dave, for helping accelerate that Rock down the hill. Try to get in front of it and maybe it will roll over you.

“Letterman would never make a joke about an underage daughter of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, John Kerry or Al Gore having sex with Alex Rodriquez or Eliot Spitzer. Sorry, he would not. Any idiot knows that.”
Letterman is a pig, as are all the people who laughed at him, the Left media, and the feminists. I want to see some jabs at slutty, uppity Michelle and her ugly daughters (and they are that). Let the Left dish it out everywhere if that is what they think is humor.
they want.

Jun 12, 2009 - 11:45 am 87. AThinkingPerson:Ms. Attitude: THANK YOU for the information on ways to contact and register our opinions on Mr. Letterman. I’ve already called several and have emailed the phone number onward.
To Sheesh and the rest trying desperately to defend him “because others have said bad things about liberals…”, all I can say is that’s pretty pathetic and you know it. If we follow your line of thinking then Letterman saying vile things about Palin’s children now allows the Conservatives a free swipe at Obama’s kids right? See how juvenile your stance on the issue is? We all do.
We’re too evolved to stoop to that. Wish the liberals would start walking upright with us someday. Until then, I HAVE and WILL CONTINUE to register my complaints with Mr. Letterman’s network and sponsors.
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:48 am 88. Michael:Sarah Palin scares the crap out of liberals. She is the embodiment of the ideals of the America founding and of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. She is the “common man” with the rare gift of common sense. Look at who vilifies her and how they do it. Personal attacks with no real point for the real world. Yep, a lot of crapless Democrats out there.
Oh, and for the silly part about Governor Palin dragging her daughters into the limelight, you haven’t been paying attention Free Hat. The media dragged them in. She is a bad parent? You truly are disgusting. Your comments are the slim eveyone scraps from the soles of their shoes.
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:48 am 89. inspectorudy:Where ever Sarah Palin’s public life takes her one thing is for damn sure, she is becoming a Joan of Arc! Jun 12, 2009 - 11:55 am 92. uburoisc:Sheesh trots out Neil Boortz, Ted Haggard, Ted Nugent, and the bathroom Senator. Sure, those guys have nationally syndicated late-night TV shows on major networks.
Frankly, I’m pretty absolute on free speech and I’m never enthusiastic about conservative becoming like PC, race-class-gender, leftist crybabies who never miss an opportunity to demand someone step down for making some crack or another. And yes, there is a preposterous double-standard on the subject, but I see nothing but a bad leftist tendency becoming a bad conservative tendency. Conservatives let people say what they want, and then mock and ridicule people who say stupid things in public. Leftists use the government and the media to shut people up under penalty of jail or complete financial ruin.

You ask what would have happened to one of Obama’s black daughters had she had a baby and went on national television. To quote, you said, “lets be truthful, if that was Mr. Obama’s black daughter what would have happened?”
We already know the situation would not even happen: Daddy Obama told us he would have his daughter abort his own grandchild, or, as he called it, “the mistake.”
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:21 pm 95. Ed Wallis:Aside from a phone number,
here is a website where you can express your “thoughts” about Letterman to CBS:
http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.php
Letterman should be required to make an on-air joke about his own son being made an active member of NAMBLA involuntarily…
…and then fired.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:21 pm 96. Marc Malone:#45 Frank – Your comment was just offensive in its entirety. And, FYI, I am a conservative. That sort of talk is just unseemly.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:23 pm 97. zanne:I think Letterman’s thoughts are much darker than his words. Not good.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:25 pm 98. sydney jane:Larry King is another old perv. I still remember his interview with Levi Johnston, Bristol’s baby daddy, and asking him details about his first sexual experiences with Bristol – who, at the time, was still 17. That was pretty creepy.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:35 pm 99. Andy:Dear VDH,
You are correct that Letterman would never make a joke regarding the improper activity of a minor son/daughter of the Obama, Biden, Gore or Clinton families. In fact, Letterman has forgone the opportunity to make jokes about an adult daughter of the Biden family. It was widely reported (Drudge, etc.) than a “friend” of the Vice President’s daughter was shopping a video, and asking for a lot of money, of her using illegal drugs. A simple Google search will verify this. I am not aware of anyone on television or radio making jokes about that. So we may conclude that even the adult children of liberal pols are off-limits. Only the adult children of conservatives are apparently fair-game.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:36 pm 100. Jeff Perren:“Letterman has devolved into a mean-spirited, demented sort.”
He did that more than 25 years ago.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:38 pm 101. Marc Malone:To those criticizing Bristol Palin: Yes, she got knocked up, but she made the very adult decision to keep the baby. Does she appear on TV? Yes. What does she do there? Cautions other teens to be more careful. Has she ranted or cried about all the attacks? Does she become the drama queen about her boyfriend dumping her? No and no.
She’s just an average teen thrust into the limelight in very negative circumstances. She has maintained her composure all the while, never letting them see her sweat. No drama. No tears. No wailing, “Poor, pitiful me!” She’s an average teen who seems to be handling it all very well. We could stand to have a few more adults like this. The Palins seem to be very good stock. This is why the Left fears Sarah Palin. Such strength and integrity.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:40 pm 102. Fragmentarian:Inspectorudy – Too right. The Klingon’s hate glare would melt Littleman, if he was edgy enough to turn that incredible “sense of humor” on the Obamas.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:40 pm 103. waltc:Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t letterman have a child out of wedlock? And does, since he brought the child and the mother into the “public eye” by mentioning them on his show, make his (now) wife a target as a slut in the name of comedy?
Common decency would prevent me from making such a comment, joking or not, but there are other comedians.
Jun 12, 2009 - 12:42 pm 104. Tony R.:It has always fascinated me that the one thing that seems to make Sarah Palin and her family, in particular her daughters, so hated in the eyes of the media and liberals is that when a pregnancy occurs they dont rush out to have an abortion.
I keep trying to work out how this has become something that upsets so many people. At what point – in a country with a population of 300 million people – did having a child instead of terminating it become such a thing of ridicule in the modern America? Seriously, I really can’t work it out no matter how many times I try work out the….ahem…logic.
Your country has become seriously f*cked up. I’m not a religious man but being raised in Catholic Ireland meant that I picked up some biblical education in school. In that whole area about “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the Earth” was there a bit I missed that said:
“Blessed are the self-absorbed heartless liberal bastards as they will be allowed to invert reality and ridicule sane decent folk”
I’d love to hear a rational explanation for the Palin bashing.

Jun 12, 2009 - 12:46 pm 107. Blackwell:I got up late. Yawned, gulped a latte and read all above, inlcuding Sheesh’s off point comment that someone once slammed soe other politician for looking slutty.
The “slutty flight attendant” joke was kind of funny, and I don’t have the outrage everyone else does. (Phil Spector’s mugshot–that’s outrageous!I almost hurled–gollum on page one). But even “slutty flight attendant” was uninspired writing and a strained effort to be funny. But nothing wrong with picking on a politician, even if it was lame.
Then he became crude and tasteless with the joke about the kid. Either kid. Like a novel’s tired wispy-haired old uncle with a glass full of scotch making a leering joke about his neice. Everyone looks at everyone else, and it’s instantly understood that Uncle Perverto won’t be invited back next year. Lettermans’s cruel sick joke was out of place, out of line for ANY kid of ANY party.
Letterman’s effort to “explain” was as calm and measured as a flopping fish with a hook in its mouth. He couldn’t joke about it, and knew he had ovestepped the bounds.
He’s an aging man trying to remain relevant and its not working. His suits, his hair, his jokes…Palin jokes are so yesterday. He has no edge, no fast wit, and younger talent is surging up aroound him. Chris Rock or Sheesh would be better and at least make us laugh.
Time’s up Dave. Call it a night before you make even more a fool of yourself.

Jun 12, 2009 - 1:20 pm 112. ILikeIke:This is too funny…
It takes a particularly shallow person to defend Rush Limbaugh as a mere entertainer when he’s “dreaming of riots in Denver” and then to get all PC on David Letterman when he says something in bad taste about Sarah Palin’s adult daughter.
It’s almost like you people WANT to be irrelevant.
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:23 pm 113. Fragmentarian:19th century retards and 7th century savages? I like that but 7th century morons would be better. Birds of a feather and all that.
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:24 pm 114. Mike:I am wondering what constitutes ‘progress’. In technology, progress is measured in the somewhat objective terms of speed and size. In contrast, the metrics of political and social progress are inevitably subjective and intangible.
With fuzzy metrics, how can one judge onself, politically, or socially? Letterman and Wright judge themselves favorably, using whatever subjective qualities they choose, but they fail to realize that they are not that special. Their actions have shown that they are harboring thoughts of inferiority, and that they do not have any remarkable qualities of creativity or leadership. Unfortunately this may be true of the President as well.

Jun 12, 2009 - 1:33 pm 117. Erasmus:Listening to the left is like running your fingernails down a chalkboard with both hands indefinably. The Left has no relationship with the Living God (I dare them to prove otherwise). Their morality is one of expediency. The Left is afraid of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin represents their worst nightmare in 3D, her existence means they are wrong and they are liars.
The left has their wet dream in the white house and Sarah keep showing up to spoil the view. She just won’t go away.
The mentality of the Leftist elite is as follows: I got mine and I’m going to get yours to, you can’t touch me, screw you.
Well I have news for you Leftists: Your little dumpster in iniquity is almost full and the trash man is on his way to haul you off to the incinerator where you belong. You won’t be missed.
64. You do realize that if Todd Palin physically attacked Letterman, that he would go to prison for assault. Especially since anyone with half a brain would have realized that Dave was telling a joke about an 18 year old who, in fact, got knocked up.
Only in the demented minds of the Palin worshippers has the actual joke been inflated to “Letterman joked about raping a 14 year old”. If Palin were the “Christian” she claims to be, then she would accept the apology that Letterman put forth. For some unknown reason, Palin has decided to start a PR campaign that Letterman is a pedophile?
89. Palin has shown “composure”? Since when does running to press for every perceived offense count as “composure”. Seriously, has there been a thinner skinned politician than Palin in modern times? She makes Nixon look like Deepak Chopra in comparison with her pathological desire to display that chip on her shoulder.
88. Sorry, Palin put forth an aggressive campaign to make people think that Bristol and Levi were getting married, when it’s pretty obvious that was just a straight up lie. Parading one’s knocked up high-school aged daughter around while simultaneously pretending that one’s morals are superior to other people invited that backlash.
35. Quite normal family? Sure, many families have knocked up daughters, relatives arrested for meth, domestic violence, membership in scecessionist poltical parties, blessings to prevent “witchcraft”, etc. Most people don’t take six colleges to get one freaking B.A. by the way.
No one “fears” Palin, they are “appalled” by Palin. She was a cynical choice that was placed on the ticket in order to poach Hillary voters, but the gambit failed when Palin showed that she was a featherweight intellect who was completely ill-prepared for the national stage. The fact that her ticket got walloped in the National Election and that exit polls showed her to be a contributing reason independents FLED the GOP in droves should have humbled this woman. Instead, we’ve been treated to a baffling 7 month “victory lap” by the secondary member of the LOSING ticket.
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:37 pm 118. Erasmus:104. Who said anything about “wanting” Bristol to have an abortion. Her choice to have the child was her choice. The irony was that her mother opposed comprehensive sex education, preferring an abstinance-only policy that even Bristol said “wasn’t realistic”. The extra irony was that Fox News carried a lot of water defending Bristol only a few months after ripping Jamie-Lynn Spears a new one for doing the very same thing.
Personally, I’m glad that Bristol’s parents are wealthy. Most unmarried teenage moms with no chance of going to college aren’t as lucky.
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:42 pm 119. Blackwell:112: IlikeIke: it may seem hard to fathom the distinction between slamming a non-politician 14 year old with crude sexual remarks and intemparately wishing for riots in Denver as you say Limbaugh did (I don’t listen to Rush), but its not that hard is it?
I mean seriously: you aren’t one of those creepy people that thinks aging has beens are cool when they make creepy jokes about 14 year olds are you? (even if you give him the benefit of a lot of doubt and say he meant the 18 yr old does that really make it ok for you?).
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:43 pm 120. Self-hating Boomer:You left a number of important elements out. Let me complete your equation:
The Alliance of the Left with Islam = 19th century retards + lots of old money + 7th century savages + lots of oil money + the cult of the environment + spineless capitalists + men too addled by stoicism and chivalry to resist feminist subversion + cowardly young men who think “freedom” means reading Playboy + several engineered informational cascades + an ascendant China + a few narcissistic personalities in high-leverage positions = something more potent than the Gothic and Hunnic invasions.
Plus a lot more.
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:47 pm 121. Tootoo:Letterman simply suffers penis envy against real man like Todd Palin, Dick Cheney et al. It infuriates liberal left that Sarah Palin is beautiful, articulate and righteous and Todd Palin is a strong manly responsible husband. They hate the beautiful qualities of Mr. and Mrs. Palin.
It is the left that has slutty mothers that give birth to bastards, fathers that abandon them. Palins drove them mad.
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:51 pm 122. J.E. Dyer:Free Hat, dear. #54. Someday you will be older and wiser, and if you had to read this comment of yours again, you would cringe.
Don’t live your life this way. There is no life so unsatisfying as one spent disparaging other people, in obsessive detail.
Soon enough, you are going to encounter challenges you have no idea what to do about. No “majority” to which you think you belong will have the answers. The utter, empty uselessness of reflexively bashing others will become clear to you. If you buckle down, learn something, and find a way to relate to other people with more respect, you just may come through it whole.
Jun 12, 2009 - 1:53 pm 123. Penny:Mr. and Mrs. Obama trotted their daughters out into the limelight just as much as Mr. and Mrs. Palin. The Obama daughters get a pass because they will abort any “mistake.” The Palin daughters do not get a pass because they believe in LIFE and believe babies are babies not mistakes. Mr. Obama’s daughters were treated with reserve by the elite left wing propaganda media. Mrs. Palins daughters were treated by the elite left wing propaganda media as women of the detested white middle class. Mrs. Palin has been compared in an ugly way with airline stewrdesses, waitresses, female sales clerks. Women of the elite left sit on boards, run the house of reps., sit on the supreme court, etc. Middle class and working class women are despised maybe because they are married to middle class and working class white men. Elites love the lower classes and force middle and working class folks to give their money to the lower classes.
Jun 12, 2009 - 2:00 pm 124. Jim Bob:Liberal attacks on Palin are no different than their attacks on Justice Thomas during the confirmation.

Jun 12, 2009 - 2:08 pm 127. EdSki:I agree there’s something that truly appalls the left about Gov. Palin. I’ve been trying to figure it out myself since last October.
I’m not sure what it is, but what ever “it” is, in my opinion, scares the heck of the left. They’ve gone way beyond their normal double-standard and despicable caricature of their political opponents. Except for has-beens like Letterman (and on their way to be-has-beens), when was the last time you heard a person off the street spout a Bush joke?
It indicates something much larger. Which is exactly what intrigues me about Palin? What do they see that’s so terrifying that I can’t?
One possibility is the specter of the resurgence of the Reagan democrat. That would make them stand up and take notice.

If Letterman wanted to make a joke about the other daughter, maybe he should have had his writers and researchers, the ones who get paid tons of money to actually do research and write jokes that might actually be funny, actually find out WHO was in NYC. Just turning on CNN I’m sure they could have found out. Just watching NBC news that day, I’m sure it was mentioned. One, New York is not David Letterman’s city. He hasn’t lived here in decades, he just drives in to tape his show. And two, neaxt to the blurb of this essay on the main pajamas page, you use a picture of the young David Letterman, when he was a great comedian worth staying up late for.
Please swap it out for a picture of the sad tired demented old man he has become. Don’t help old Dave destroy the memory of young Dave.
Jun 12, 2009 - 2:53 pm 136. JW:Palin rocks. She came on the Today show to talk about the very important Alaskan pipeline deal w/ Exxon that will help bring oil to the rest of the 49 States. It was Lauer who turned the focus on the “joke’.

Another Obama story Matt Lauer never covered as he “obeys” (Palin’s words)the great one. We need to hear a lot more of Palin in fearless mode.
Palin was very smart to turn Letterman’s crass remarks into an assualt not just on her & her family but on pop culture that degrades women in general. A debate that the Republicans should endorse.

One of those “Simpsons” writers might actually put Letterman/Crusty out of his showbiz misery. He’s the new host of The Tonight Show, Conan O’Brien.
(Ironically, O’Brien is just as miserable, selfish and needy as Letterman. “Meet the new boss,” as they say)
Jun 12, 2009 - 3:22 pm 139. Since their continued sponsorship supports Letterman’s stupidity, you will take your business elsewhere, and will encourage all of your family members to do the same. Ten letters or emails, and he continues his sliming of all that is good and just in this nation. Once the count passes 100, however, account executives begin to get nervous. After a thousand, the guy’s toast.

If both sides don’t stop and take a deep breath and think about the consequences of their own words and deeds, open violence and civil war are inevitable.
Historically, when opposition parties begin to actively and openly dehumanize and demonize their ideological opponents, as is now occurring in America? Such things are always a prelude to violence and to civil war.

Kat in Indiana:David Letterman started out as a (not-so-accurate) weatherman at an Indianapolis television station in the 70’s, and I am also ashamed to say we share an Alma Mater, Ball State University. I do not watch his show (some of us have Jobs, you know), and of the few times I have seen his monologue, I have not been impressed. The only time I have ever actually laughed at something he said? As a weatherman, he was showing the weather in the midwest, and in those pre-computer days the artist hand-drawing the map had forgotten the state line between Indiana and Ohio, and he was trying to come up with a new name for the combined state. Of couse, I was about 12 or so at the time, and I was not expecting something funny during the news-I was waiting for Gilligan’s Island reruns!! That was the last time he was ever funny that didn’t require denigrating someone else. I assume that all those years in Gotham have flushed all mid-west morals out of his pervy mind….

I’m going out on a limb here, but here’s a passing thought on Letterman’s irrational hatred of Palin.
I heard a passing remark on talk radio today that Letterman himself got some flak for having a son out of wedlock, and that any criticism of this made him “bristle.”
If true, it may be he sees Palin as a symbol for those who would dare to “judge” his personal “lifestyle choices,” a typical resentment of the narcissistic, Babyboomer Left, which he personifies.
Babyboomer resentments are often expressed as projected rage. Nothing in the media culture in which he is immersed mediates this.
IF that’s the case, then he may feel crudely justified under the aegis of a Biblical quote which serves at the moment: “Judge not, lest ye be judged.”
Just a thought.
Jun 12, 2009 - 7:30 pm 151. Mike:Certainly, not everyone who lives in NYC is a crude, self-important leftist, however, there are many such, and Letterman’s comments illustrate their thinking, such as it is. Apparently in that part of America, the bluest of the blue states, it is not only considered proper to grossly insult the daughters of another, but it’s considered cutting edge intellectual chic. No doubt some even consider it very courageous, perhaps even “speaking truth to power.” But of course! Letterman didn’t mean that a 14 year old was having sex with a ballplayer during a game, he really meant to suggest that an 18 year old girl was a prostitute (why else would Elliot Spitzer be interested in her?). Such cutting edge humor! Such nuance! And saying that Sarah Palin looked like a “slutty flight attendant?” Comic genius! What’s next? Joking about birth defects?
In the red states, such “jokes” are considered clear evidence that the person telling them was raised poorly, isn’t very bright, has no class, and is begging for a bit of close range physical counseling. After making such a comment, anyone delivering such a pseudo-apology would not be considered to have redeemed himself, but to have removed all doubt–if any existed–that he was an ass. To decent, everyday Americans, there is no excuse, no explanation for such crudity, such stupidity, such glib idiocy. Think about it: Would any of your teachers–those who weren’t lunatic leftists–have allowed you to make such comments in class? Would your mother think such comments cute? Would she be proud of you? Would you repeat them to your minister?
So let’s test that intellectual chic, that great courage, that comic genius, that daring to speak truth to power. Perhaps Mr. Letterman, who hasn’t been funny for many, many years, might wish to journey to Alaska and, in person, make similar jokes to Todd Palin (for that matter, to any father in red state America), about his daughters. One suspects that Mr, Letterman would, in short order, find himself propelled across the tundra. In fact, I suspect Sarah Palin would do no less. That’s video I’d pay to see. And as Paul Simon wrote in “Still Crazy After All These Years,” “[she] would not be convicted by a jury of [her] peers…”.
Jun 12, 2009 - 7:38 pm 152. s sommer:Letterman was a total jerk to tell that “joke.”
Any parent should be offended by it, certainly any mother, woman, female should be offended. It was a stupid joke, not at all funny, absolutely in bad taste.
However.. Palin was an idiot and a bad mother to run for national office when she knew that her teenage unwed daughter was pregnant. She completely disregarded her daughter’s needs at that time. I was appalled, as were most of my women friends. We came to the conclusion that if her judgement and values were that poor, and her ambition was that great, that she was a disgusting excuse for a mother, woman and a pathetic human being.
She was already Governor of Alaska, plenty successful. She did not “need” to run!
There are a lot of reasons for people to disapprove of Sarah Palin. This is just one.
Letterman was a cad and a jerk to tell that pathetic “joke..”
But, Sarah Palin is the one who chose to make her daughter a public spectacle.
Both are disgusting.

Jun 12, 2009 - 8:12 pm 154. Jack Marcotte:Essential vdh?
What is in this name calling, he said, she said other than smoke and diversions from what is going on?
Who in the hell cares what a 62 year old idiot and pervert with TV ratings that are under water says!?
He simple reads a script and after another operation or two he won’t even be able to do that. He probably already has to wear diapers.
Why have representatives “of the people by the people” not called BHO out to begin impeachment proceedings based on his overturning and shredding of the US Constitution.
A constitution that he is sworn to protect and support as a President of the US.
Can some one tell me where in the Constitution the federal government has the right to do what they have just done under BHO? And not one elected idiot democrat or idiot talking head (Newt the Smart?) republican has stepped forward. Other than requests for donations.
vdh has not even touched on this. It is like the water the fish are living in but being fish they no nothing of the water that allows them to even exist.
The federal government has taken over two major Auto manufacturers, major insurance carriers, major banks all in the name of “financial security”. As defined by “what” and who?! Not one elected rep. even read the documents.
All that has happened is to protect the corrupt Unions, the Old boy network and their bonuses, who are now serving as convenient whipping boys because of excess salaries, only of course after they have “banked” the millions, and of course protect them and their company’s (Democrats) slush fund from Market forces that would have forced their efficiency or demise.
Likely a demise as it should be in a “free” market. As it should have been under the Constitution.
That of course would have busted the Unions gravy train and the “managements” bonus along with big dem party contributions. Not one real car maker in the mix. Simply criminal use of taxpayer money.
Has any one thought about what happens to a US citizen now who complains and gets mad and would try to take his country back? How would that happen when even the elections are rigged.
If Joe Stalin knew it would be this easy to take down America he would have done it.
Maybe Joe Stalin did succeed in the end due to his seeding of idiot intellectuals in the US with LSD fried brains and Pot burned out hippies with his “agents of change” using Utopian verbiage to perfume the communist scorpion.
This coded subversion easily seen through by any with common sense filling the empty spaces in most intellectuals head has led to an ongoing destruction of America that is current and ongoing.
Stalin has finally accomplished his mission. The affirmative action dumbed down, knee jerk liberal “Americans” now being pushed out of the Academic halls at all levels has achieved the POTUS status.
All done with tax payer funded money. All With the help of subversive and criminal elements such as the Chicago political Machine, Acorn, and the teaching of Communist left wing manifesto’s.
This vacuous, inane logic has now started to turn America upside down.
It has reached critical mass. It has reached a parasitic status such that it is even being funded by productive Americans tax dollars under the code of being PC.
It has hypnotized all including vdh. Who waste time by having a spit ball throwing contest instead of being able to address the real issues undermining America.
It is nothing but a power grab and there is no one “home” to fight.
Private business are being shut down by the government run Auto industry.
Dealers are not left to succeed or fail based on their ability in their local markets but on a Government run company’s mandate and decree.
BS artists are now addressing the MSM TV sets to “justify” this action.
I for one will not by another GM truck, car or $30,000.00 bicycle—the end result of BHO’s logic.
Banks who have been given billions of dollars for TARP are not lending money.
Small Business such as ours are scrambling for our financial lives due to a shut down of new business due to an upside down market that has no logic in it other than the “fear” of worse to come.
Most writers in this blog, including vdh would come to a tree cutting and land clearing operation with a paper ax. Nothing will happen out of this.
And if you don’t vote and get others to vote even if you have to take them to the polls it is all smoke.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:24 pm 155. harry:I looked up the word “smug” in the dictionary and there it was, a picture of David Letterman right beside it.
Jun 12, 2009 - 8:29 pm 156. arhooley:Why do liberals hate Sarah?
Because she’s happy.
She has a faithful husband, a close family, a career for which she’s worked hard, and the gift of personal beauty.
Can you imagine how much Hillary and Michelle must loathe her for this?

Jun 12, 2009 - 10:48 pm 159. JackT:Ain’t America great.
Letterman could care less, he’s close to retirement, filthy rich, and got a kid to raise. Besides, Palin does dress slutty, and her daughter did get knocked up as a teen, so I don’t see a problem with his jokes. I think it’s ok to make fun of racist trailer trash.
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:32 pm 160. Realist:I am still waiting for just one of the PC, left wing, Democratic ‘neolibs’ with all their fine tuned antenae on matters racial to explain to me how the fact that 96% of Black American voters voted for the touted Black BOGUS POTUS was NOT an act of blatant barefaced RACISM.
Jun 12, 2009 - 11:57 pm 161. WhyamInotsurprised?:It is difficult to miss the relatively recent rise of liberal defense by having a “third” party make a statement to the effect of
1. “I’m sure that X did not mean it that way, and if they could, today they would say instead … ”
or
2. “What X meant to say was” “”
This sort of revisionism is done with straight face by Pelosi (well, as straight as possible!), the White House press secretary guy “whatshisname,” and many others of late. Our Dear Leader has set the example and is encouraging/enabling his administration and eventually American culture to new lows in the art of lying. Wow, we thought Clinton as a sleezebag!
Jun 13, 2009 - 12:02 am 162. WhyamInotsurprised?:Amen #139 Old Patriot! Vote with your wallet. That is the only thing they listen to.
Maybe five years ago, I wrote to CBS Exec. VP for Letterman’s show and told them I would no longer watch his show because of the lecherous way he was dealing with “young” starlets on his show. He thought he was being cute, clever, sexy, or something. But as a father of three daughters, I found his comments and behavior appalling. His joking with them in a crude and lascivious manner, ogling them, touching them in borderline inappropriate ways left me with a feeling of disgust at this man who should be doing comedy and personal interest interviews, instead of getting his jollies at the expense of these young ladies.
However, they too are to blame as they volunteer to go on his show and subject themselves to these treatment. But hey, just where are the feminists to call this guy on the carpet and warn young ladies to beware?
So since I sent that letter, I have not watched his show again. Vote with your channel changer, or more loudly, as Old Patriot advises, vote with your pocketbook.
Jun 13, 2009 - 12:24 am 163. Never For Obama:I agree with all the posters who say that the reason the left needs to villify Sarah Palin is because they are scared of a true conservative woman who lives her values.
I especially loved the comment on post #16, Dogs bark when they get scared.
If the left was not terrified of Palin and her popularity, they would not feel the overwhelming need to try and destroy her.
Jun 13, 2009 - 6:03 am 164. davo119:Dr. Hanson why do you waste time on a brain dead clown like Jason Zengerle? Vicious personal attacks on Governor Palin and her family have been going on since her selection as running mate to McCain. Letterman’s decent into lurid depravity is only the latest round and is probably an indication of the end of his career. I would rather you focused on the absolute class act that Sarah Palin and her family represent.
Jun 13, 2009 - 6:11 am 165. noreen:Dave has made really creepy sexual comments about Sarah Palin before. To throw her kids into the mix is really perverse and foul. They chastise her for throwing her kids into the limelight. Were not every candidates kids at the speeches and rallies? She was at a baseball game with her 14 year old this time . How coarse to parade your kid around in such a manner. She send the left into paroxysms of panic and anxiety that she is A okay in my book. I love her. The left equates her daughter’s pregnancy with hypocrisy. No, she is living her befiefs. Was she to hide her daughter in shame ? They hate her because she did not abort her Down’s kid ? None of it makes any sense

Jun 13, 2009 - 7:47 am 170. rssrvs:VDH is right on all fronts. There is another aspect I find apppalling. Dare I mention that, at least in the old days, parents (like but not limited to the Palins)who learn an unmarried daughter is pregnant (we used to say “expecting”) are devastated and mortified. They typically sublimate this with their love. Given his experience, as chronicled in these responses, goofy ol’ Dave from Indiana doesn’t share this. Perhaps that’s why he can so cavalierly cut them, and millions like them, with remarks about “knocked up” children. In normal America one would blush with shame if he accidently (much less deliberately) made a remark about “knocked up” teenagers in front of an unwed mother or her parents. This isn’t a question of “tasteless” comedy, but rather one of basic inhumanity. As Shylock said, “cut me, and do I not bleed?”
BTW. Dave likes to promote his “mom” on his show. Let’s ger her take on this subject.

Jun 13, 2009 - 8:32 am 173. Granny:Letterman is an ass! He is repulsive and in my opinion hasn’t been funny since the beginning of his career. The “joke” was vile and disparaging to all women. Sarah Palin has a sense of right and wrong that I agree with. However, I think his perversion should be punished. Apologizing isn’t good enough especially since the so called “apology” made it 10 times worse. Ok if the joke was about an 18 year old? Not! Fire this jerk.
Jun 13, 2009 - 8:43 am 174. Tony:Since this “joke” made the news I have read several accounts excusing Letterman’s behavior on the basis he is a comedian. I have been a big fan of Bill Cosby for years and cannot remember a single instance where he had even used minor bad language on national TV. Mr. Cosby is funny, Letterman is fatuous.
Anyone who approves or excuses this kind of behavior is depraved just like Letterman.
We as a whole don’t live in a creepy culture. There are alot more normal, moral decent peo;le then their are lefty liberals that are amoral. It just seems like the culture has gotten even worse than it is becasue the amorale liberals are in charge of the press.
They are snowing the rest of the country what their fellow citizens are like, and that they are not in step, so they might as well accept it. Go with the flow. A flow that is not shared by a huge majority of the population.
It’s happy horses**t-much like being told the majority favors global warming when just the opposite is true-hoping to change peoples perception to match theirs using smoke and mirrors
Kinda like Californias would overwhelmingly support Prop 8. The reality couldn’t be any more opposite-look how it got voted down in flames by huge numbers
Tell a lie often enough and people will believe it.

Jun 13, 2009 - 9:00 am 177. Ellen K:This is a societal issue. From reality TV to tabloid journalism, we have become a nation that revers the cheap and tawdry over the upright and noble. Letterman, a bitter old man, was trying to be cool for his ratings war with Conan. While all of the late night talking heads have taken shots at politicians and their children, only Olberman and Letterman come across as having persona grudges. Maybe they are trying to prove the validity of their surnames’ late syllables, but I digress…
I have always cringed at attacks on the children of celebrities. I thought the attacks on Chelsea Clinton were out of line. I thought the attacks on the Bush twins were out of line. And I think the attacks on Palin and her family are out of line. What I would like to know is, where is NOW on these attacks? Why have they not castigated CBS and Letterman for smearing a female governor and her female children? Is this the message of Team Obama-you can smear someone regardless of the validity of the comment, as long as they aren’t Democrats or part of a socio-economic group? And what of parity in reporting? Does anyone think that a sitting Republican politician would have gotten a free pass on the statement President Obama made regarding his bowling skills? Where’s the sensitivity and why aren’t related groups demanding apoligies? Face it, we have a Teflon presidency, a shrinking network of news and a population that is disinterested in facts over fiction. This type of complacency will come back to haunt us. God help us all.
Jun 13, 2009 - 9:02 am 178. Sonny:How about this!
Gov. Palin just completed what were failed efforts of 30 years by her predecessors in getting a natural gas pipeline from Alaska to the Lower 48.
Here we are in the middle of an energy crisis and she does something about it. Put your hands together for her. She saved us all a bundle of energy expense.

Well, I think some NAMBLA “jokes” about his son are in perfectly appropriate order now. How about you??

Jun 13, 2009 - 10:00 am 182. divorced male:So Palin, while running for VP, was supposed to hide her family from the media? Is that what you’re saying? Right! That would have worked out really well! The ever respectful and unbiased media would certainly have been okay with that.
The media/celebrity world/and other politicians will continue to pile on Palin, continue to smear her and her family until she either gives up, or loses her cool and tells them all what she REALLY thinks of them, which is exactly what I think they’re going for. What none of them understand is that the more you try and beat some people down, the stronger and more hard-headed they become. If they’re afraid of Palin now, just wait for a couple of years.
We used to say the power of the pen was important and now that has been changed to the power of the keystroke! The number of people that are bothered by these things must let their voices be heard or it is just meaningless whining! Investigate and find out who the people are that are in charge and need to be contacted with your intelligent, tactful views….below is an example of a letter I received in response to one of my letters:

My point is that the hypocritical misogyny and barely-veiled political agenda goes beyond the man who doesn’t realize an unbuttoned double-breasted suit jacket looks foolish. There is an entire crew of tasteless, hateful leftists working for CBS – not only for the Letterman show but for 60 Minutes, the CBS Evening News, etc.

Regarding the latest anti-semitic statements from the Right Reverend Wright, we should remember that Obama once claimed that never in his 20 years of listening to Wright’s sermons did he hear the man express such views. Clearly that’s a lie, as Wright can’t open his mouth without spewing bigotry and racism.
Ironic that Wright dissed ‘Them Joooooz’ around the same time another anti-semitic crackpot attacked the Holocaust Museum, and an American Muslim shot two Army recruiters. And VDH would be (come on people, help me out here, there’s gotta be some wonderfully admirable fish that outclasses the Carpus Lettermanus that I can equate our magnificent Victor to).
Actually, Victor has been hitting them out of the park lately what with his columns on our bought-and-sold media, Obama and co.’s racialism, the Cairo speech, etc. Here’s to your good health, Mister Victor!

Jun 13, 2009 - 12:34 pm 197. DavidN:Two things:
First, I’ve always disliked Letterman. He’s got this “Gee I’m a dork” routine he does every night, endlessly repeats the same joke and gets nervous laughs from the audience, who aren’t sure they get it, and always gets overnervous with the female guests, being silly and trying to flirt. It’s gotten very old, and that combined with the white socks, the running across the stage before each show (if you watch on TV sometimes you can see him do it, just before the monologue), and the double-breasted suits combined with those silly little glasses, and the pencils with erasers on both ends (so he doesn’t hurt himself–no, really!)…the whole thing is just tired, and not that funny. One correction to be made: I don’t think he’s avoiding making jokes about the Obama children because *he’s* partisan. Reportedly he despised Clinton, referring to him as “the Hillbilly”. There are two things at work here: one, he knows he can attack Palin (more about this below), and two, he, like most desperate comedians, knows that if you say something sexual that’s provocative, you can get a nervous laugh out of the audience. It’s a substitute for being funny. Of course he couldn’t do this about the children of any Democrats, and whether he’d like to or not, he’s smart enough to know he *can’t* and that alone is enough to prevent him.
Second, as to Sarah Palin and the left’s reaction to her. It’s sort of a perfect storm thing. They aren’t upset with her solely because of her stand on abortion; there are any number of politicians, even women, who have the same stance, and don’t get the same reaction. It’s also not solely because she didn’t go to Ivy League schools; there are any number of politicians who didn’t do that, either. It’s not her family; most Republicans have one of those. Thing is, it’s most of the circumstances of her life, stands she’s taken, and her background, combined with how popular she is, that made her so unpopular with Democrats. They learned their lesson with Reagan, who they dismissed as an old guy who gives good speeches, but whose ideas were “out of touch” with mainstream America. After he won two elections by landslides and governed for 8 years, the Democrats vowed “Never Again” and go into attack mode whenever there’s a popular Republican running for office. Since Jon Stewart’s a comedian, he’s free to say anything he wants, and influence opinion as much as he can…if he gets something wrong, well, he’s a comedian, it was a joke. Now we’ve actually (apparently) elected a joke to the Senate (Al Franken) and the snarkiness will take over our political arena. Palin didn’t come from the “proper” upbringing, so they can’t make fun of her Ivy League education (while typically concealing a similar background their guy has), and she is politically honest. This last is horrifying to them: Republicans who run for office need to have a taint of corruption, so that the media can be distracted from the wholesale looting of the country’s financial coffers that they’re engineering simultaneously. I mean, imagine Sarah Palin running for something against Murtha, Frank, Wrangel, or even Chris Dodd. If she’s all of these things, well then she must be a slut, or something, because we can’t allow her to successfully run for office…she might *win* and that would be a disaster for the country, or at least the Democratic Party.

Palin does dress slutty, and her daughter did get knocked up as a teen, so I don’t see a problem with his jokes. I think it’s ok to make fun of racist trailer trash.
—————————
Racist trailer trash??? You’re referring to a woman from a very humble background and means with no big family or political connections that was elected governor of a state while in her 40’s; is still married to the same man with whom she’s had three children. So pray tell, what great accomplishments do you have in your CV that place YOU above trailer trash?

Jun 13, 2009 - 1:15 pm 201. jlpillinois:Sarah Palin should not stoop to conquer this degenerate. I understand the impulse, and the atmosphere now is so toxic that ordinary behavior just gets you trampled. But still. Move on, Sarah.
Bret you are spot on – that is exactly the left’s tactic – Obama used it against Hillary Clinton. I don’t care what your politics are – the treatment of women by the left is shameful and wrong. My disgust for Letterman is beyond words. My disgust for CBS, ABC, and NBC grows by the day.
I am deeply saddened that we don’t have an alternative to the trash that is on all 3 networks.
Sarah Palin you are my hero – some say that she should stand and fight, but be quiet (Charles Krauthammer on Fox) – I say fight – fight – fight – fight until you do not have another breath in your body.
Jun 13, 2009 - 1:16 pm 202. jlpillinois:Correction on previous post – some says she should not stand and fight, but be quiet (Charles Krauthammer on Fox) – I say FIGHT! We all should fight with her to get this stopped.
Jun 13, 2009 - 1:19 pm 203. Virginia 11775:Barack Obama has already made it clear what would happen if one of his daughters was “punished with a baby.” The fetus would be vacuumed out by an abortionist, and the public would never be the wiser.
I always felt Bristol Palin’s decision to have her baby was courageous, and the old-fashioned ridicule heaped on her by lecherous old men like David Letterman and the gossiping old biddies of the pro-so-called-choice left only shows how little society has changed since Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter.
If I remember correctly, Sasha and Malia were constantly with their family on magazine covers, onstage and on the campaign trail. An earlier comment supposed they would be treated as despicably as the Palin children, if they only “asked for it,” but their behavior is above reproach.
No one thought any less of Barack Obama being born to an underage teen who was seduced by a married man who left her. We can therefore say with near certainty that if no one has made a joke about the President’s mother, his two daughters would be off-limits, as well. No one even said a peep about Ashley Biden caught on film snorting coke.
Jun 13, 2009 - 1:53 pm 204. Dschoen:I would have like to have sent this to Jason Zengerle but there is no way I will pay to post on TNR
“Yes, it’s true (as Hanson emphasizes) that it was Willow, not Bristol, who attended the Yankees game with her mom. But my guess is Letterman was simply confused about which daughter was in attendance. (it wasn’t exactly national news)”
Jason Zengerle
Jason, please explain EXACTLY how Letterman AND the shows writers along with who ever approved this “Joke”, MISSED the hundreds of “current news articles about Palin’s charity trip to NY and attending the Yankee game with her daughter Willow!
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.”
“we often do, making jokes about people in the news”
Did ya get that Jason?
Let me clarify, JUST FOR YOU!
“we” Meaning Letterman, the shows writers AND who ever approved this “Joke” We have to also include CBS for this as well.
often do,
making jokes about people in the news”
Did ya get that Jason? About people in the news! So what “was” in the News about Palin’s attending the Yankee game? If we can find that ALL questions will be answered yes?
Well here’s the news article.
On June 7, the AP reported
“Palin was being honored Sunday at an anniversary celebration for the Long Island-based Independent Group Home Living Inc. after attending a New York Yankees game. She was joined by her husband, daughter Willow and a sister.”
Would you like to try the excuse “The joke was about Bristol”?
Did ya get that Jason? The article on June 7th, 2 days before Letterman’s joke, CLEARLY states it was daughter Willow, NOT daughter Bristol that attended the game.
Do you see the problem here Jason?
If you want me or anyone else with half a brain to believe that Letterman was ACTUALLY talking about Bristol and not Willow, you have to prove Letterman is a liar!
“about people in the new” Bristol was not in the news about the Yankee game Buckie! Willow was.
Clear?
Now once you PROVE Letterman is lying about his “about people in the new” claim, why would anyone with half a brain believe this proven liar is telling the truth?
(it wasn’t exactly national news)
Really Jason? Did you look it up?
Google
3,130 for attending a New York Yankees game. She was joined by her husband, daughter Willow and a sister. (0.25 seconds)

“…if Sarah Palin didn’t want America to joke about her barefoot, pregnant and stupid teenage daughter, then she probably should not have used her as a campaign prop…”

Because it won’t be an apology as in, “I am sorry for what I said. I should not have said it. I apologize for what I said.”
It will be lefty apology which goes like this:
“I want to apologize to those who may have been offended by what I said.”
So….
#1–”I want to apologize”….but I won’t.
#2–”to those who may have been offended”–i.e., “I can’t help it if you’re offended; your problem, nothing wrong with what I said, but since your being offended is causing me problems, I will say I apologize….without actually apologizing.”
They’ve got this down to a science, folks.

Rupert Murdoch on the infamous chimp assassination cartoon . . . “Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted,” writes Murdoch.
So, when you make a good observation, don’t ruin it by wrapping it in mindless statements like, “It will be lefty apology”.
You want to hear a non-apology? “There have been times when America has shown arrogance . .. been dismissive, even derisive. But in Europe, there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual but can also be insidious. Instead of recognizing the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans choose to blame America for much of what’s bad.”
I didn’t hear an apology in there.
Jun 14, 2009 - 7:29 am 234. David S:I agree. Any culture that could promote Sarah Palin as a candidate for national political office is indeed quite creepy.
For the record, the left is not afraid of Palin. She is actually a blessing to the left, because she demonstrates on a regular basis how unconcerned with reality the GOP is.
So long as the GOP faithful keep pretending that Palin is a viable national candidate, the Democrats have very little to worry about. Her qualifications, experience, intellect and interest are all lacking. The real question is why the right is so fascinated by this unimpressive woman, and how long it will take for the GOP to wake up. Dumb, meet dumber.
This should be fun.
Peace.
DS
Jun 14, 2009 - 8:02 am 235. LeftyK:First, I would like to say that to pass judgement on Sotomayor without fully reading what she said is ignorant. Both sides of the political coin are too quick to take sound bites at face value in order to make the opposition look bad. In this case, she said that a hispanic woman with the wealth of experiences that she has had would make better decisions than a white man without those experiences. The comment was really about experience and perhaps race or gender should not have been involved at all.
Secondly, I would like to address the ’slutty’ Palin comment. Maybe he should not have said that. It isn’t really appropriate but then again, neither is his show… he is a comedian. If he said it about Michelle Obama, I’m sure people would be upset, but probably not you. Also, comparing Palin to Michelle is strange as they share very little in common other than being public female figures (open to media fodder). Whether she be a Republican or Democrat, insulting the first lady is very different than insulting a Governor.
Then on to the A-rod comment. If it was intended for Willow, it is absolutely in poor taste as joking about statutory rape isn’t really funny (although the underlying comment of A-Rod being slutty is). If it was intended to Bristol, as Letterman stated, I think it is ethically o.k. I mean, this girl was originally only in the spotlight because of her mother ( and was off limits as the children usually are) but now she has chosen to stay there. She was recently on the cover of People magazine, which I think makes her fair game. Again, the joke really only makes sense if it was about Bristol…
What I’m trying to argue is that both sides are guilty. Why do we only lose our sense of humor when the joke is on us? And it has been going on forever. Limbaugh used to make fun of how ugly Chelsea Clinton was, Liberals cited the ‘crazy partying behavior’ of the Bush twins (when in reality it was just like any other teenage debauchery). I don’t think it is so much a conspiracy on the right or left but the age old tale of being able to dish it and not take it.
Why do we let silly things like this distract us from all the truly important things going on around us?
Jun 14, 2009 - 9:09 am 236. Rip Ford:The hypocrisy of the Palin/Letterman affair by the MSM and liberal elites is just disgusting. Try substituting Michele Obama with Sarah Palin, “hot House N-word” for “slutty flight attendent” look and see what happens.
The sick left is quite good at racial, homosexual gender, etc. slurs when the target is on the right.
Jun 14, 2009 - 9:13 am 237. LeftyK:I would also like to say, I am in no way threatened by Palin’s ‘realness’. That is silly. I simply just do not agree with her on most issues.
Why are people getting SO UPSET about Letterman calling Palin slutty and then including links to pictures of Michelle Obama wearing tight dresses? I mean, if it isn’t right to call Palin a slut then why is it o.k. to call the First Lady (not parenthesized because that is what she is) slutty?
Can we stop with the kettle calling the pot?
Jun 14, 2009 - 9:15 am 238. LeftyK:Sorry… One more:
I do not think he was advocating the rape of underage girls and I do not think anyone defending him is either, that is pretty inflammatory rhetoric for intellectual debate.
I also want to say that Bristol is NOT considered a slut for having her baby. Her mother is a hypocrite for extolling abstinence while her daughter is allowed to sleep in the same bed as her high school boyfriend. I mean, did she think they just held hands all night? I also think it is silly for her to come out and start saying ” If girls knew what was gonna happen, they would wait to have sex”… Most people know that having unprotected sex will lead to a baby.
Still, slut would not be something I would call her… ever. I wouldn’t call Obama’s mom a slut either. Or mine either, who had me out of wedlock.

Not even a good try at equivalency. You either don’t know the details of the chimp cartoon story, or you’re just grabbing at anything to promote your usual nonsense.
The apology in this case was perfectly legitimate as made. The inclusion of the chimp in the cartoon was related to a then recent story about a chimpanzee that mauled a woman. People looking for an ax to grind CHOSE to read something else into it. The apology to the people who claimed to be offended by opting to interpret the cartoon out of context in favor of spinning it through their distorted world view was more than they deserved.
Letterman’s comments were targeted, specific, and offensive without any spinning of interpretation. The equivalence would be if Murdoch were to apologize to any chimpanzees who were offended. A rather stupid position but one I would not be at all surprised if you’d tried to make it.
You should stick to your mustard fetish and leave logic to others.
Jun 14, 2009 - 11:18 am 241. Ellen K:First of all, Sarah Palin dresses better than most of the teachers in my high school. She wears business suits when it is appropriate and jeans and sweatshirt when it is appropriate. Compare that just just about any celebrity, many of whom seems to be clueless as to the sanitary need of underwear.
Jun 14, 2009 - 11:35 am 242. JR:Secondly, there is a definite defensive air to President Obama’s denials of hearing anti-Semitic rhetoric in Rev. Wright’s church. Those views are part and parcel of Black Liberation Theology. They seek a scapegoat for their own lack of initiative and try to pin it on the Jewish people. The Blame Game is an old liberal trap and if Team Obama wants to deny they were listening, that makes it interesting that they even claim membership.
Third, I think Michelle Obama is an attractive woman. But I cannot believe that she wore those June Cleaver dirndls when she was a high powered lawyer. Whoever is her stylist should be fired. Stop trying to make her into June Cleaver and allow her to dress as a modern, professional woman would dress. She would look much better in tailored clothes that reveal her trim figure. I don’t know what they were thinking, but it is her choice to wear it.
Fourth, can we PLEASE get away from reality programming? I think this is in part responsible for the voyeuristic views and the idea that everyone is open game for ridicule. There used to be some standards in our society known as manners and courtesy. Reality programming scrapped all that and frankly, made the last election into an American Idol type frenzy. I am sure there were voters consternating that they couldn’t vote over the phone and more than once for their chosen leaders!
Oh come now, liberal unmarried 17 year olds get pregnant and come to term all the time… they are the Democrat Party’s tax supported constituency of welfare sluts. Palin’s problem with liberals is that she solves her own problems with her own money, disproving the liberal lie of taxation as the only means to social well being.” And no I’m not going to apologize for the term “welfare sluts,” because getting pregnant while totally dependent on the government confiscated paychecks of one’s fellow Americans is very slutty behavior.

“I didn’t hear an apology in there.”
And you wouldn’t even if it smacked you upside the head. This is a typical Obama rhetorical construction: on the one hand we bad, on the other hand you bad. Moral relativity leads to meaningless statements such as these, and they dominate in Obama’s speeches. Of course, cowardice leads to the same behavior, so maybe that’s his problem.

“The comment was really about experience and perhaps race or gender should not have been involved at all.”
Nice try, but your reframing of the meaning of that line in her speech — which many here have read — is off base. She meant what she said as the rest of her speech clearly shows. The “wise Latina” line shows up in other speeches by her and is not a slip of the tongue. You can argue the import of what she said, but not what she meant. Words matter, right? Especially to someone who has been angling for a SCOTUS position for years.
As for your other comments: Calling any woman politician slutty on a national media show is ridiculous. Complaining that “Rush does it” does not in any way exculpate Letterman. That’s a sheepish way of arguing. It was not entirely clear which daughter Letterman meant, and in saying what he said the onus was on him to be very clear. Governor Palin’s fecundity is well known. She has three daughters. That’s why he offered the lame apology he did, so we would know for sure he meant the 18 year old Bristol. Of course a sex joke about an 18 year old is borderline uncouth anyway. Finally, it has been 150 days now without any well known comedian making jokes about the president. So I guess we can only look forward to more Palin family sex jokes from the cowards in the MSM.

The character assassination of Palin is a retread of the “What’s the Matter with Kansas” trope. Dumb hicks don’t know how to pick a leader. Speaking of which…

We are at war.
And if we don’t play for keeps they will do us all in.

I suppose you could argue for Palin’s intelligence – but evidence is lacking. Hence the typical “Obama made a gaffe” response.
Sarah Palin has demonstrated profound ignorance, limited education, poor judgement and is simply a stooge for her corporate sponsors. I would love to see the GOP promote a woman, but only if this person is qualified and capable. Palin is not.

Jun 15, 2009 - 10:01 am 271. Free Hat:During the 2008 election, rather than just attacking the ideas of the Democrats, she declared war on them. She accused the Left of not being part of the real America, of sympathizing with terrorists, and of being Fascists.
Rather than have a legitimate dialogue about the differences between Republican ideals and Liberal ideas, Palin instead chose to relentlessly attack the character of her opponents, and accuse them of being friends with terrorists.
The Secret Service even publicly admitted that Sarah Palin’s attacks on Barack Obama’s patriotism provoked a spike in death threats against the future president.
When you lie about your opponents, and attack them as being un-American and terrorist sympathizers simply because you disagree with them, then what gives you the right to feign outrage when they do the same to you?
She called people anti-American, and they call her an ignorant slut.
She joked about Obama palling around with terrorists, and they joked about her pregnant daughter getting knocked up.
I fail to see how either of those attacks is worse than the other.
And this is just a microcosm of what the right wing has become – a party of stone-throwing adolescents that for lack of any good ideas or serious leadership descend to personal attacks, calling their opponents terrorists, fascists, totalitarians, communists, pagans, racists, and baby killers, but then whine like a bunch of infants when they are treated similarly to the way they treat their opponents.
Conservatives some how expect that feminists everywhere must come to Palin’s defense simply because she’s a woman.
But she’s a woman who just happened to label half of Americans as terrorist-sympathizing socialist America-haters.
She’s also a woman who said this about Hillary Clinton:
“I say this with all due respect to Hillary Clinton…but when I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or you know maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think you know that doesn’t do us any good – women in politics, women in general wanting to progress this country.”
So if Palin won’t even come to the defense of fellow women who are being treated unfairly, why should they come to her defense?
And furthermore, why should anyone come to the defense of an individual whose entire campaign for the vice presidency was based on vitriol, attacks and mistruths?
The reason that the Right loves Palin is because she was able to put a pretty face and voice on all the hate that the Right wing has for liberals, minorities, and any other groups and institutions that they deem to be “leftist”. They believed that having a pretty person vocalize their hate legitimized their hate, which made the hate grow more vociferous the more she spoke.
Which is exactly why everyone else wants her to go away.

Over and over, the left denies being afraid of Palin. But something just doesn’t…fit. If they were truly just making fun, they’d get the most pleasure out of doing it on their own sites, where they could cut lose and REALLY be nasty — and they’d get the boost of having others agree with them. If they came to blogs like this at all, it would be to “agree” wholeheartedly that Palin’s the best thing that could happen to the conservative movement (and then they’d go back to their own blogs and ROFL and LOL at the dumb VDH readers.)
But instead, they take time out of their busy schedules to come to this group to drop their insults. There’s no logical reason for spending so much time here and for trying so hard to convince us of Palin’s stupidity — UNLESS they’re in a total panic and want to stomp her chances out of existence 3 years before the next election.
SO — either: 1.they’re getting paid for it, or 2. they’re trying to discourage conservatives by doing the ol’ “isolate it, demonize it” treatment recommended by Allinsky. (or both)
The only other possible solution is that they’re just creeps who like to annoy other people, and we all know leftists are peace-loving humanitarians, so it couldn’t be that…right?
