Jobs, jobs, and no jobs!
Second, we are in a recession with unemployment hitting 10% in many of the states of the American southwest. Allowing another million illegal aliens annually to enter the US will only further depress wages-and mean that laid-off American workers have no recourse to unskilled day jobs to tide them through. Those who used to loiter around Home Depot lots in California looking for a day’s cash job of building fences or hauling away trash used to be exclusively illegal aliens, now not readily so.
The Flu Panic
Third, the much hyped swine flu epidemic, despite the media hysteria, reinforces the perception to Americans that they share a porous border with a third-world country, from which at any time infectious disease can break out and spread northward. Again, I’m dealing here with perceptions, not always reality. I once told a friend in Palo Alto that it was not uncommon in my children’s school to find children of aliens from Mexico with tuberculosis exposure; he laughed and suggested that it was illiberal to even suggest such a thing. But I’m sure that soccer moms of his environs would be the first to turn reactionary should it happen that recent arrivals were infected with swine flu and in the same classrooms with their own future Vassar and Yale-bound toddlers.
Obama may wish to pander to the Hispanic vote and ease up on border enforcement, but popular sentiment still seems to favor both closing the border now, and coming up with some sort of plan that avoids mass deportation of long-time resident, employed illegal aliens.
Liberal apartheid of a sort
I come up here to Stanford two or three days per week from rural central California. And I’m amazed at the de facto segregation of elite Obama country in Menlo Park and Palo Alto versus the barrio in nearby Redwood City. I think I have finally figured out the modus operandi. Everyone here is “progressive”. That means, you hire Hilda to watch your kid, Juanito to mow your lawn, or Hillario to wash your dishes at the local restaurant.
You deplore racism, or even the mere suggestion that cultures are not all inherently equal. But under no circumstances do you buy a home in Redwood City (far cheaper in fact). Nor do you put your child in any school district that draws in the Redwood City children of illegal aliens. So it is a sort of alternate universe here. From 8Am to 8PM we have an integrated world where service workers attend to the mundane needs of the Silicon Valley and Stanford elite-before going home to Redwood City and San Jose where they live and school their children out of sight, out of mind.
My gut feeling is that integration, intermarriage, and assimilation even may be going on far more slowly in progressive Palo Alto than is true of more conservative Selma and Fresno. I’m sure the sophisticated exec here can make the argument that “I’m not social engineering with my children!”, but there is something nonetheless odd about hyper-liberalism in the abstract, and 1950s segregation in the concrete.
In fact, the children of the privileged might learn about the real world in more “diverse” schools, and could be tutored at night to make up any deficiencies in the curriculum. Looking back, much of what I learned about the cosmos came from going to Eric White School in west Selma for grades 1-6 (95% Hispanic), coupled with working along side in my teens some rather rough characters from the Oklahoma Diaspora that my grandfather had hired on his small farm to irrigate and tractor-drive.
As my father told me once after a particularly vicious fight at 11 with the Galavez Brothers, “I don’t think reading all those books helps much, Vic. And it’s a problem I can’t help you with unless you learn to help yourself” And so we did, and survived and learned, and in the end were the better for it. My best friends remain those I was with all day long from 5 to 12, and then again in junior high and high school to 18, rough sorts though they were and in some cases still are. I think most of the Stanford kids I see around campus would benefit from perhaps just one summer less monitoring egrets in the estuary or working as an intern on world hunger in DC, and one summer more mowing lawns with Lupe or hammering roof shingles with Pepe—in the last analysis the truly liberal thing, not unlike the opportunity had the Clinton or Obama children just attended for a year the DC public schools.

One thing I would affirm from my own experience is that assimilation, intermarriage, etc are all going on at a brisk pace in the more conservative “hinterlands” (like my own exurban enclave in Riverside County).
I tended to choose regentrifying Craftsman and late-Victorian neighborhoods while I was moving around with the Navy, and found them to be substantially “whiter” than average wherever I went. (Much like Palo Alto and Menlo Park.) But out here among the old farmhouses cheek-by-jowl with new construction, it’s a big mix, and everyone’s middle-class, regardless of ethnicity. If you hire a Hispanic to mow your lawn, it’s as likely to be your neighbor’s kid as the employee of a lawn service. Your dentist is Indian, your lawyer originally from Guatemala, your kid’s teacher from Taiwan, your dog groomer from Haiti, your new associate pastor born in Cambodia. Your next-door neighbor is a union heavy-equipment operator, and three blocks away is the citrus grove owner who has a big Cinco de Mayo party you can hear up in San Bernardino, and sends his kid to drive around in the old sawed-off International to honk the horn and invite everyone this side of Mountain Ave.
God bless America! It’s great. The folks from Palo Alto should get out and see it sometime.

May 5, 2009 - 9:44 pm 6. Charles Gordon:Very thoughtful analysis covering all the points, except one: the helots massing atop a volcano. How does a purely labor class integrate into a society that no longer produces anything tangible? Transforming raw materials into a refined product through engineering was our past glory, but its days are numbered in this country. Add to that the futile ambitions of our own youth who are skilled most at the technology of “social networking.” What kind of future will that bring to the illegal alien labor class, not to mention to those social networking practitioners, on whose prosperity depends payment to the growing population of retirees who contribute only to generating health expenses and to the consumption of pensions for 20 to 30, sometimes 40 years of inactivity?
The other trend at cross-purposes with this distorted demography is our soothing desire to realize a belief in a riskless society, at a time when third-world squalor infects insidiously our heartland, if not now, very soon. The usurpatory power-brokers, sitting at their chairs in Washington, abetted by the media, attempt to convince us of their can-do assertions. They tell us that more and more laws, legislation, rules, and regulations, far too broad to have any meaningful ability to enforce compliance, will alleviate the dysfunctional behaviour of the lawless. They hold hearings to pontificate on the evils of our past, have finally found a way to tax the air we breathe, and conclude that the soul of the individual gutted and served on the plate of collectivism is our only possible future.
We have reached the tipping point at which grievances and entitlements overwhelm the wisdom and traditions that have carried us so far. It is the legacy of those to whom we owe our prosperity that we must preserve. That VDH may inspire more of us to resist the decline of our way of life, and invigorate some of us to fight for the conservation of this exceptional heritage.

Very well put, sir. Your logic is linear and your presentation exceptional. Thank you for a superb post.
S.M.
Rampant population growth threatens our economy and quality of life. Immigration, both legal and illegal, are fueling this growth. I’m not talking about environmental degradation or resource depletion. I’m talking about the effect upon rising unemployment and poverty in America.
I should introduce myself. I am the author of a book titled “Five Short Blasts: A New Economic Theory Exposes The Fatal Flaw in Globalization and Its Consequences for America.” To make a long story short, my theory is that, as population density rises beyond some optimum level, per capita consumption of products begins to decline out of the need to conserve space. People who live in crowded conditions simply don’t have enough space to use and store many products. This declining per capita consumption, in the face of rising productivity (per capita output, which always rises), inevitably yields rising unemployment and poverty.
This theory has huge implications for U.S. policy toward population management, especially immigration policy. Our policies of encouraging high rates of immigration are rooted in the belief of economists that population growth is a good thing, fueling economic growth. Through most of human history, the interests of the common good and business (corporations) were both well-served by continuing population growth. For the common good, we needed more workers to man our factories, producing the goods needed for a high standard of living. This population growth translated into sales volume growth for corporations. Both were happy.
But, once an optimum population density is breached, their interests diverge. It is in the best interest of the common good to stabilize the population, avoiding an erosion of our quality of life through high unemployment and poverty. However, it is still in the interest of corporations to fuel population growth because, even though per capita consumption goes into decline, total consumption still increases. We now find ourselves in the position of having corporations and economists influencing public policy in a direction that is not in the best interest of the common good.
The U.N. ranks the U.S. with eight third world countries – India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Uganda, Ethiopia and China – as accounting for fully half of the world’s population growth by 2050. It’s absolutely imperative that our population be stabilized, and that’s impossible without dramatically reining in immigration, both legal and illegal.
If you’re interested in learning more about this important new economic theory, I invite you to visit my web site at OpenWindowPublishingCo.com where you can read the preface, join in my blog discussion and, of course, purchase the book if you like. (It’s also available at Amazon.com.)
Please forgive the somewhat spammish nature of the previous paragraph. I just don’t know how else to inject this new perspective into the immigration debate without drawing attention to the book that explains the theory.

You don’t have to deport directly so many millions. Start putting a few corporate execs in jail for hiring illegals and the jobs will dry up. Remove the incentive for the behavior and the behavior will stop.
May 6, 2009 - 5:24 am 13. David Thomson:We must repeatedly beg people to imagine that brown skin illegal immigrants actually possess blue eyes and blond hair. And I am not joking in the least! My words are not a pathetic attempt at cheap humor. This issue has been thoroughly race carded. Many cannot even begin discussing the challenges of illegal immigration without suspecting racism and hostility toward those of Hispanic heritage. As I have repeatedly said countless times before—race guilt is destroying Western Civilization. It acts like a cancer on our values and institutions.
May 6, 2009 - 5:25 am 14. Ali:The fact is, even if illegal aliens are working, or even working 2 and 3 jobs, most of them are STILL GOING TO BE NET USERS OF TAXPAYER SERVICES because they will not be able to rise out of the working poor. They haven’t the education or the skills to do so, and with 20 million or so, plus whatever relatives they’d be able to sponsor, there’d be even more downward pressure on wages and more reliance on welfare and social services.
May 6, 2009 - 5:32 am 15. Geoph:” ‘When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” – Leviticus 19:33-34
May 6, 2009 - 6:44 am 16. AThinkingPerson:Basically in a nutshell the current situation stands that Americans cannot find jobs in America and states along the border are dealing with violence spilling over the border from Mexico AND we have a new nanny-state loving President who is bailing everyone with a hand out and ramping up the govt. freebies? Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
I see no easy solution under the current world first, Americans last administration and now with socialized healthcare on the horizon we have only seen the tip of the iceberg.
May 6, 2009 - 6:46 am 17. George Best:This is just another reminder of the lack of inclusiveness of the Democratic party and the stupidity of those that follow their leadership.
Liberals claim to be for the poor and downtrodden, but they dont want their kids or residences anywhere near them. The want to help them through interaction with their own kind calling for social programs and penalties against those who discriminate yet they dont want to administer the programs personally(leave that the down trodden minorities leadership to figure that out) and dont want to be penalized for their own discrimination because they are the ones who support the minorities.
Conservatives dont judge people by skin color but by their abilities to achieve and assimilate. Unfortunately, most minorities are unable to do so and as a result conservative whites are surrounded by conservative whites. We dont hate minorities, but as long as they seperate themselves and want special favors because of their race, then we dont want any part of them.
Its a constant cycle that keeps democrats at the forefront of political leadership too often. No Democrat will ever close the borders or send illegals back home. They have been able to establish a belief in minorities that it is the white conservatives who are to blame for their failures or inability to feel equal. These minorities have never shown the ability to see otherwise.
The result of all this is as the whites work toward becoming the minority and not the majority, the Democrats will gain in power. When the day arrives that the now majority blacks and hispanics who dominate the work force cant do as well as they expected despite being the majority and having the continued increase in help from government, we will be a purely Socialist country.
This Obama idiot is just the beginning. I wish I would be alive in this country in 50-75 years to see all this come to fruition so I could say I told you so, but instead I will just worry about my kids and hope I can build enough wealth to give to my kids and that they use it wisely.
May 6, 2009 - 6:50 am 18. ddc:Interesting article and well thought out. I particularly enjoyed the suggestion that the elite have their children schooled publically with lupe, then get the tutoring at night to make up for? The disaster that is the California public school system? An added note would have been an examination as to why the Ca schools are so inferior in the first place. Might 10 billion annually towards illegal alien benefits be just a part of the problem?
The issue I have with your statement about Lupe and the tutoring is this. Palo alto and the rest of the elites make up a tiny portion of this state, for the rest of us, non-elites, who cannot afford the “after school tutor to make up for the curriculum” we get to fully enjoy one of the countries most dumbed-down educational systems – not to mention the sad state of the UC ’s declining standings, for what purpose again?
May 6, 2009 - 7:09 am 19. JED:Very good and broad spectrum commentary.
May 6, 2009 - 7:20 am 20. RKV:As long as the politicians see the undocumented as potential voter blocks and not ticks, the situation will remain lose-lose until it explodes. The green card workers are very beneficial in this area, except that crime usually follows the fringes of the immigrant’s migrations.
As worker season begins now and border crossings increase, theoritically so must the importation of swine flu. If there is a pandemic, then there will be a price to pay for the ommission of border security. Basically, it is just nuts to leave the door open and sponsor illegal activity. How were those sanctuary cities allowed to be above the law?
VDH and his fellow farmers are the cause of illegal immigration – they wanted cheap labor and didn’t give a rat about our laws. One can hardly expect him and his ilk to be honest about the way to correct the problem. The way to make illegals self-deport is to use our existing technologies to verify all hiring, and to prosecute those who hire them. Put a few of VDH’s relatives in jail for breaking our laws and the problem will go away. As will the illegals, because they are here only for the money. And yeah, I’ve been to Mexico and fully understand why one might want to be here rather than there. That said, we don’t owe Mexicans anything (and they’re 80% of the problem), or any other illegal alien for that matter.
May 6, 2009 - 7:22 am 21. Concerned:The realities of mass roundups and deportation is that it is not doable; however, there is another option which has two parts. Part one is a denial of all benefits to illegal aliens, including, but not limited to drivers licenses, medical benefits, citizenship to children born of parents of illegal status, in state tuition, etc, etc, etc. The second part would be conducted by the illegals themselves when they self deport themselves after they realize that they can no longer function within our society.
Would this be harsh, yes it would, but which choice is harsher. Denying native born American citizens their right to jobs, housing, education, or denying these same benefits to people who have no right to them to begin with.
Sooner or later, we need to realize that we are a country of finite resources, not infinite resources. As our resources are further strapped we have to make hard decisions. The current influx of illegals is currently driven to a large part by the large umbrella of free benefits they receive by virtue of crossing the border. It is these benefits as much as anything that is driving the illegal immigration we see. Cut off the benefit of illegal immigration and it will drastically reduce.
May 6, 2009 - 7:31 am 22. MarkD:This will be self correcting. The Social Security surplus is nearly exhausted, and will soon be another drain on the Government. A government that will step in to stiff investors in Chrysler will certainly stiff investors in Treasury Bills. I suspect the Chinese have already noticed this. Look to inflation to destroy the value of everything you have. The government can’t go broke; it can always print more money. It just won’t be worth as much.
We face a future as a much poorer country, one that will be much less attractive to illegals. Too bad we will have to live in it.
May 6, 2009 - 7:48 am 23. Chemman:#15 it is easy to throw in one bible verse that seems to make your point but if you look at the rest, that same alien was abandon their old gods and culture and to integrate into the Jewish Culture. See the story of Ruth.
May 6, 2009 - 7:59 am 24. Noesis Noeseos:I know Dr. Hanson isn’t very fond of Hegel, but even an empiricist must suspect that the America our Founding Fathers conceived has entered the final throes of a tragic negation.
May 6, 2009 - 8:00 am 25. Noesis Noeseos:RKV, do you know something definite about VDH and his relatives? If so, don’t be shy. Share the information with us.
May 6, 2009 - 8:11 am 26. Saltherring:Your last paragraphs strike home, Dr. Hanson. After graduating from an all-white, middle-class high school in 1970, I and a friend worked in a virtually all-Mexican oil exploring crew during the succeeding summer and fall. Some of my co-workers were in this country legally and some were not. The legals referred to the illegals jokingly as “river-swimmers”. After five months working with and living among men from a distinctly different culture, I gained a respect for their work ethic, family values and genuine warmth for others. I have maintained this respect through the succeeding 39 years of my life.
My respect for the Mexican people, however, does not extend to those who break our laws by crossing our border illegally, particularly to those who come to steal social/medical/educational benefits or to engage in criminal activity. We need to send them home and close our borders. I have no problem with LEGAL immigration, but believe it is wrong to reward those who break our laws by their mere presence on our soil.
May 6, 2009 - 8:41 am 27. K:I grew up in Palo Alto/Los Altos Hills in the 1960s and attended public school well into the 1970s. I was the child of “elites,” attended public schools, and, yes, had a few tutors on the side, mostly in the arts.
A few memories.
I remember four school trips to the tertiary sewage plant where we watched poop and paper swirl around in giant vats as an environmentalist droned about saving the planet. This was science.
I remember pulling tires out of the bay for a biology class.
I remember grabbing oil-covered birds and wiping them clean for health class. Perhaps, though, this was during the Sunday School program at the Presbyterian Church that my parents inexplicably attended for one, odd year. I can’t recall.
I remember watching my French teacher boinking the boy’s coach in the woods behind the school, my lesbian gym teacher watching us undress with dilated pupils, my social studies teacher arrested during the protests, my math teacher standing on her desk, foaming at the corners of her mouth and (inadvertently?) revealing her underpants during a diatribe against Nixon.
I remember drugs in every third, or so, locker and smoky parties sanctioned by the school that made my throat raw for days.
I remember volunteering at the front office and looking through all the charts of students that were in an accessible file drawer. They had asked me to file a couple charts. IQs and standardized test information were written on the front on each chart. Very interesting!
I remember neighborhood “wife swaps” with disgust. We, the kids, would meet under a designated tree to discuss where our moms and dads were bedding that night. Of course, they were back home in the wee hours, pretending to us that nothing happened.
I remember the gut-wrenching fear that overtook us when we learned that one of our parents was driving toward Reno. That meant divorce. Or skiing. We were never sure.
I remember “New English.” I had never heard of a spelling test until I visited relatives in New York. I learned grammar in college when I learned ancient Greek as a language. I never learned grammar in school.
I remember watching twenty, or so, Eager Allan Poe movies during English class segment on poetry. I never read his works.
I remember “New Math.” As a tenth-grader we finally moved back east and I discovered that my math knowledge was years behind that of my peers. But I was great at sets and subsets, intersections and unions. I couldn’t identify, though, a negative number or reduce a fraction … with a 4.0 GPA.
I remember playing Yahtzee every day during sixth grade instead of doing math. Yahtzee was a math game, you see, and considered important for learning math skills.
In grade school, I remember feeling very pressured, by my teachers and some peers, to wear MIA bracelets, peace symbols and other such attire. I told them that I didn’t like to wear “stuff” that got in the way during kickball. For some time, this line worked.
I remember watching My Three Sons and Father Knows Best and pining for a family like the ones on television. They didn’t have a hippy-dippy, psychiatrist mother and nerdy, blinkered physicist father. Television parents had a neat home with linear furniture – my family had modern, curvilinear furniture. As an adult, I still associate heavy, sunken brown couches with happy families. Television parents had sons that knew when they were doing wrong and eventually got caught. Television families were so cool. My family was more like Bewitched!
Just so you know, I was saved from this background by reading. Books saved me. I read incessantly. And covertly. I read everything from junk to classics. Eventually, after MUCH struggle and many tears, I went to Yale, then Univ of Chicago for a doctorate. I have always voted Republican. I’ve been married once. Home school the kids.
The furniture is quite modern, though. And curvilinear.
May 6, 2009 - 9:01 am 28. William Wynne:Hard as I may struggle against cynicism I sometimes lose:
If we simply allow current trends to play out, America will achieve Mexican third-world status. Then illegal immigration will be less attractive. Problem solved.
May 6, 2009 - 9:01 am 29. TheMightyMonarch:There’s a very simple way to solve this. Eliminate all benefit programs. No free health care, no unemployment, no social security, no food stamps…nothing.
Eliminate freebies as the attraction and the void will soon be taken up by the allure of employment.

We just lost some cleaning ladies at the office. The social security number we were given proved false. It happened this past Monday. We called to ask them about it and they didn’t call back. I guess that makes me one of the ilk.
Ilk and proud. Ilk. Got some?
May 6, 2009 - 10:05 am 31. Boots:17. George Best:The result of all this is as the whites work toward becoming the minority and not the majority, the Democrats will gain in power. When the day arrives that the now majority blacks and hispanics who dominate the work force cant do as well as they expected despite being the majority and having the continued increase in help from government, we will be a purely Socialist country.
At some point in the future, the (mostly) white baby boomers will be retired. The oldest of the boomers are just now starting to drop out of the workforce and live on their pensions (hahaha, what a quaint term that will be someday). Imagine the coming demographic/generational showdown when elderly whites find out they have no pensions/401K plans (see what’s happened to the Chrysler bondholders), social security was a con, and socialized medicine can only function by denying treatment to the elderly http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0409/Obama_mulls_endoflife_care.html
Schadenfreude! Except that we will all suffer.
May 6, 2009 - 10:13 am 32. MiamaMan:Even though I voted twice for Bush, under him, and while we slugged it out in Iraq, the illegal immigration issue got simply out of control. Imagine now, with Obama and Pelosi, the latter saying that workplace raids are unAmerican, and so forth.
Let’s be honest, the problem is totally out of hand. Add to that the liberal/democratic advantage and desire of locking under Democrat voting blocks for good other states besides California and we have the perfect storm.
One of the key to the woes of the world is simply overpopulation, and we are in the midst of it.
The best solution would be to unite Mexico, US, and Canada into a Federal North American Union. Of course, Canada has the most to lose, as it is, like Russia, one of the few countries really underpopulated.
May 6, 2009 - 10:15 am 33. RKV:I married into a raisin farming family with farms not 10 miles from those that VDH’s people own near Kingsburg, CA. His family and my in-laws belong to the same Co-op. I know raisin farming well, from having spent 4 harvests at the ranch, so when VDH speaks about farm life and illegals, I’ve been there and done that, every bit as much as he has. False ids are used by most illegals, and today the farmers’ can say “Hey, he had a green card.” What is needed is a simple check with a database to send back a photo and confirmation. This system already exists and implementation has been blocked by a Federal judge. Take away their jobs and there is one less reason for illegals to stay in our country. And speaking from personal experience Americans will do that work, I know because I did, both as a high school kid growing up in the SJV, and as an adult helping my wife’s family. Wages will need to rise a bit, I imagine, but the cost to consumers will be less than the cost of illegal aliens in jail, schools, hospitals, etc.
May 6, 2009 - 10:26 am 34. K:32 — Are you kidding? A North American Union?
Absolutely not.
What we need is the opposite — to reconstitute under smaller entites, such as states, and allow each small entity to have it own system of health care, taxation, etc. Let the competition begin. I’d much rather see every state reinfused with self-determining power.
May 6, 2009 - 10:27 am 35. Will:Nothing, Nothing will ever change in America, until every single, last one of the Hippies are dead, dead dead…….they destroyed a great country !!!!!!!!!
May 6, 2009 - 10:55 am 36. gordo 12:Cut off benefits and give employers a quick h-1 visa process to maintain the productive.
This allows the dead beats to relocate back home and allows the hard working to pay their share.
May 6, 2009 - 11:12 am 37. ddc:America is in decline.
Education, innovation, Americans are overweight and undereducated by the millions as are the children (dropout rates among citizens and illegals rising every year), gang warfare is pandemic, jobs going out of country rather than staying. America is slowly becoming a service industry. Open the borders and who’ll pay for the onslaught? The small minority of Silicon Valleys? Palo Altos? or the husband managing the toys dept at Walmart and his supermarket cashier wife?
One can hear the cheers from across the globe, “it’s about time.” There really is no one definitive reason for the decline but the accumulation of many reasons. Perhaps the most glaring has been the endless march of politicians whose only job is to get re-elected. Specter’s defection symbolizes the decay that is American Government. Party doesn’t matter. There are no Jeffersons, no Adamses, no Franklins, no Lincolns and there hasn’t been for decades. What is left is corruption and pretty monuments. There is no difference between today’s two parties. Saving ones a$$ (job) and the wonderful perks accompaning such is the only goal whether the tactics are covert or otherwise it is always apparent.
Surprisingly I feel neither panicked nor elated. What is felt is a stark indifference in the way one feels after the flood has already ruined the carpet so there’s no point in saving the wood floors beneath.

May 6, 2009 - 11:36 am 39. Saltherring:I agree with those who propose eliminating ALL bennies to illegal aliens, including the ‘right’ to work in America. Heavily fine and imprison all employers caught with illegals on their payrolls…’frontdoor’ or ‘backdoor’. Put an end to the free stuff and jobs and illegals will voluntary return to their country of origin.
And K: I don’t always read the long posts, but yours (#27) was entertaining and quite sad. The working class kids I grew up with envied the rich kids for the cars, clothes, and privileges they had. But many of the silver-spoon kids I grew up with led troubled adult lives, some ending in tragedy. I’m glad you survived in spite of your unbringing. All the best to you and your family.

What a wonderful education she received…
May 6, 2009 - 1:34 pm 41. Jared Palmer:“…deport 12-20 million illegal aliens en masse…”
Deportation is only one of many tools that can be applied to remove illegal aliens. Look at states and local communities that have removed incentives for illegals to stay. They voluntarily leave and settle in more illegal-friendly places.
We need to employ all of the tools simultaneously at all levels of government. Take away their opportunities for citizenship, housing, employment, education, social services, health benefits, anchor babies, chain migration, etc. Then their home countries will look a lot more attractive than being in the U.S. illegally. Deport the few remaining.
Check out http://www.heritage.org/ to see some honest, competent research.
May 6, 2009 - 1:35 pm 42. bartlebee:Any illegal alien who is working or has worked in the United States has committed one or more of the following crimes (some are felonies): ID theft, document fraud, Social Security fraud, conspiracy to violate immigration laws (if the employer knew he was hiring an illegal alien), income tax evasion (if the employer paid the illegal alien’s wages in cash), and I-9 Form employment fraud. Many illegal aliens also use their stolen or fake ID/documents to apply for and receive welfare and food stamps, which is a crime.

Hey Geoph, did you notice that the Bible passage you referenced doesn’t say ILLEGAL alien?
May 6, 2009 - 2:04 pm 44. Machias Privateer:The greatest benefit to most of these illegals is that they have “anchor children” who are American citizens. That’s quite enough of a gift from the American people.
But, just to show some compassion, I’d offer full U.S. citizenship to anyone who has lived here peacefully for 21 years. I would not reduce that one second, as many of my contemporaries were drafted to serve in Vietnam between the ages of 18 and 21. Yet they could not legally vote for or against the politicians who sent them there. It is directly as a result of this inequity that today’s American youths get the right to vote at 18. I will not give an illegal more rights than a veteran who gave his life for this nation.
All those illegals ought to go here http://thewall-usa.com/ and insert their own birthdate. Here is today’s list http://thewall-usa.com/search.asp?action=casualties
26 pages of names etched in black marble.
104 of which never reached the age of 21. And lots more who never lived long enough past their 21st birthday to actually get to cast a vote in the 1968 Presidential election.

May 6, 2009 - 3:56 pm 48. Geneina:If the path to citizenship were restricted to illegal aliens who had never committed a felony, there would be very few takers. Why? Because in order to get a job with an employer who requires the completion on an I-9 form, an illegal alien commits two and possibly three felonies – document fraud/forgery, perjury on an I-9 form and identity theft.
Experts suggest that approximately 75% of working-age illegal aliens use fraudulent Social Security cards to obtain employment. This is a felony. When they complete their I-9 forms they do so under penalty of perjury yet another felony and if the social security numbers or other documents they are using belong to someone else, they are committing identity theft under the laws of many states still another felony.
Illegal alien identity theft is not a victimless crime and children are prime targets. In Arizona, it is estimated that over one million children have their social security numbers being used by adults. In Utah, 1,626 companies were found to be paying wages to the social security numbers of children on public assistance under the age of 13. These young people suffer very real and very serious consequences.
Thus, contrary to what the advocates for illegal aliens would have us believe, illegal aliens are not law abiding and they routinely commit serious felonies with real victims. The only way a large number of illegal aliens would qualify for a path to citizenship would be for Congress to ignore the felonies being committed and only bar those individuals who had been convicted of their crimes. Of course, this means granting amnesty from prosecution to millions of criminals and leaving their victims to recover their identities without any possibility of justice.

Home life was very different for me, suffice it to say. I did find your references to teaching methods and curricula interesting, because in the (number of) different schools I attended (Dad was in the Navy, so we moved a lot), small gestures were made at “New Math” and “New English” — but my teachers were all traditionalists, and gestures were all they were.
I think set theory started in 4th grade. It was a week or so at the beginning of the school year. For the next 6 years, we did exactly the same set theory for a week at the beginning of school. EXACTLY the same set theory. It was hilarious. Finally, in 11th grade, the advanced math students got to start a year without it.
But in the advanced program at my high school, we also got through Calculus and solid geometry by the time we graduated, so I guess the set theory didn’t really hold anyone back.

I have never seen a somolian woman pay for any of her food. somolians have 100% government welfare. Average $580 per month cash benefits (for purchases other than food)…$680 per month for food. This is minnimum. The more kids…the more welfare. Add to this the somolian housing allowance…clothing allowance…education grants…free tuition.
somolians even have it better than mexicans. I have never seen a mexican woman pay for her food either….EBT, WIC….all the way man…they love America! Life is easy in America.
both races come in and buy $200 to $500 worth of groceries everytime (and have 3- 5 unruly, misbehaving ,yelling kids with them) the adults are mostly, rude, gross, ungrateful, uncivilized (of course).
Whites and Asians come to the store alone or with their 1 or 2 well behaved kids…buy less than $100 worth of food…which they pay for themselves…are kind..civilized….

Maybe they could be Obama supreme court nominees.
How many times do you let people break into your house, use your stuff, eat your food, and sleep on your sofa without trying the front door?
How do you respond?
Do you let your home be turned into a bus depot sans buses?
While people pursuing legal entrance should be given ample opportunity at citizenship, the consequences for trying to sneak in must be sufficiently deterrent.
We could solve the immigration problem with one minor law. Offer any illegal worker immediate and full citizenship for their entire family if they call a tip line and inform federal officials that their employer has hired illegals. Big fines for the employer. It will only take about 5 minutes before every company in America is checking to insure their workers are legit against a verifiable database.
May 6, 2009 - 8:36 pm 54. JDH:It doesn’t add up to let most of these people stay. Once they are legal, they will bring over everyone they are related to. I work with this population here in TX and can tell you that it is common for them to have 4 kids before they turn 30. No matter that they can’t pay for them – they take them to the DR. for every runny nose and they get free dairy/formula from WIC. No way will be able to pay for the entitlements as this population ages. They are most all low income earners and will stay that way. A majority of their children drop out of school after the 10th grade.

May 6, 2009 - 10:59 pm 59. Blackwater:What part of “illegal” don’t you understand?
We must round up and deport illegal aliens. They must be concentrated (yes, “concentrated”) in camps, then placed on freight trains, and taken to the border for deportation.
I will relish news images of weeping women and children. I will laugh out loud at Liberals comparing the new Operation Wetback to the Shoah.
Illegal aliens are criminals.
Let us build the fence high and strong. Let laws be passed righting the misinterpretation of “birthright citizenship”.
Illegal aliens are criminals, and criminals are the enemies of society.
Locate, arrest and deport every single illegal alien and person or compant who hire them no matter what country they’re from then safeguard the borders. American jobs for Americans! American education for Americans! American healthcare for Americans! It’s time we start acting like every other self-respecting country in the world and put the livelyhood of our citizens above illegal invaders. No excuses or sob stories. For every illegal alien sob story there’s an American sob story of someone being unemployed, uneducated and in poor health thanks to illegal aliens stealing their American dream.
May 7, 2009 - 1:32 am 60. expat:I agree with this:
The way to make illegals self-deport is to use our existing technologies to verify all hiring, and to prosecute those who hire them.
But we also need a credible border: a low-tech fence + high tech surveillance and monitoring, backed by sufficient (armed) BP personnel.
It’s impossible not to sympathize with someone trying to better themselves or help their families, especially in a corrupt dump like Mexico. But that’s why the US has a LEGAL path to immigration. We cannot continue to encourage those that can’t be bothered to follow it.

The repeal of Prohibition did good things for Chicago, which 0bama might recall. De facto legalization in Portugal hasn’t created armies of drug users or vast drug factories, but it has reduced enforcement costs and heightened personal liberties.
May 7, 2009 - 6:25 am 64. Bookworm:Your entire article about the realities pressing down on the open border crowd is excellent. I especially liked your characterization of the compartmentalized mindset so prevalent at America’s elite universities. That’s nothing new, of course.
I attended Berkeley in the late 1970s and frequently found myself at my professor’s homes. What I quickly discovered was that, although the professors preached Marxism in the classroom, their extremely expensive houses in the Berkeley hills admitted minorities for only two reasons: yardwork and housework. The one good thing about this blatant hypocrisy was that it served as one of the first blows breaking down my lifelong, unthinking allegiance to the Democratic party and “liberal” political ideology. (Sadly, it took another 20 plus years and the destruction of the Twin Towers to completely destroy my party allegiance, but I subscribe to the “better late than never” school of thought.)
May 7, 2009 - 9:04 am 65. J.E. Dyer:Roger Godby — I’ll go with your proposal on the following conditions:
1. All state assistance programs are contingent on NO drug use by the recipients, verified by testing.
2. All operators of vehicles, machinery, antyhing you can hurt yourself or other people with, are routinely and comprehensively (not randomly) tested for drug use. Everything from lawnmowers to chainsaws to the family car must be fitted with testing equipment that can prevent the apparatus from being turned on, if the would-be operator fails the test. (Presenting urine to a lawnmower in order to start it sounds like the state of the art approach.)
3. Zero tolerance for failure to fulfill contracted obligations. Missing monthly payments, not showing up for work, negligently allowing the house to burn down or kids to run in the street — you lose. No mercy. You don’t get to keep your life at the community’s expense. It gets sold and parted out to others more responsible, and if you’ve committed any felonies in the process, you go to prison, where if there ARE any drugs, they’re illegal.
4. In any situation of assault or homicide, the party with drugs in his system is presumed to be at fault. Period. No one will face a penalty for killing anyone who has in his system drugs that generate aggression.
5. No insurance-carrier will be at fault for any incident involving a person with drugs in his system. Someone who’s high steps into the street and gets hit by Gordon Gekko in the Ferrari, Gekko walks.
The fact is, drugs are not harmless, and they are not a neutral quantity in people’s lives. Routine drug use makes people FAR more likely than otherwise to be unable to hold a job or live responsibly. Whatever drugs cost, there will always be people who can’t pay for their fix, and who will take to crimes both petty and felonious to secure their next hit. They will also just live in self-destructive ways, whether we designate their actions crimes or not.
Society should not have to pick up the tab for this. Hardworking taxpayers should not have to subsidize any part of the drug use that renders others unable to join their ranks, whether through public assistance, rising insurance premiums, or laws that end up making business-owners, homeowners, and spouses bear the costs when the irresponsible breach their contracts.
May 7, 2009 - 9:12 am 66. Paul -Indiana:This is a patch, not a solution, but consider giving the illegals free transportation to a sanctuary city of their choice. This will put the burden on those who want the illegals here and will free up our emergency rooms, etc.

The surest way to hasten SS’s demise is to include in it 20 million poor unskilled workers and their relatives in Mexico through legalization and a totalization agreement with that country. SS is designed to PAY MORE PROPORTIONAL TO CONTRIBUTION to the poor than to higher wage earners, so large numbers of poor contributors will actually drain the system more quickly. In the meantime, the children of the poor compete directly with Senior Citizens for resources.
May 7, 2009 - 11:32 am 68. gcblues:nothing is going to make the right wing fascist border morons happy that does not include deportation, wall building and the end of free trade.
they believe that illegals are responsible for all the crime, corruption and governmental dysfunction.
they believe that deportation will cause their wages to rise making there life better. that would be despite the fact that costs would rise faster than their wages.
they believe English is American, and that wasp culture is superior to all others and should be enforced as such in the usa.
border moron belief systems are tainted with inner inadequacy, ignorance, racism and fascism.it is fascist to demand law and order and not the rule of law.
border morons are in no way American conservatives. they resemble the worst of 30’s and 40’s euro conservatives. i.e. fascists. refer Hayek, road to serfdom.
an American conservative position would be ending welfare for everyone. making all schools private. supporting universal liberty and the right of anyone to work anywhere in the world as long as they had clean police records, a job waiting for them and an agreement to not use social services of the host country.
in pre rebuttal. i do not care what other country’s laws are. i am a us citizen expat, i only hire illegals. i closed my American business due to high taxes and stupid regulation in the usa. i know what it is to operate illegally elsewhere and the usa. you do not.legal workers everywhere are useless dependent losers. as an employer, i want a relationship with my workers, not with the government
i do not care that you cannot compete with a 3rd worlder. go back to the trailer park and read a book.
i do not care for or like English. it is stupid and not superior to anything or anyone. it is not American. ditto for feet, inches, yards, miles, pounds and ounces. how stupid is that.

May 7, 2009 - 1:29 pm 70. J.E. Dyer:gcblues — you probably have more people who would agree with you here than you think, at least about your actual policy proposals (end all welfare, let people work across borders, etc).
Americans are certainly not the only people who have ever wanted to prop up their own wages by keeping competition out of the labor market. (In fact, most populous nations are worse about it.)
But there are a whole lot of people in the US whose concern about enforcing our existing border/immigration laws is more philosophical, and related not to racism about Mexicans, but to concern about the debilitating effect on our own character if we keep turning a blind eye to unenforced laws. Enforce them — or change them. Those are the “rule of law” options.
I would be very happy to sunset all our federal entitlement programs. And if states insist on having such programs, they have to live with their own consequences, and compete with the other states that AREN’T stupid, for the quality, hardworking people, the industry, and the jobs.
And I don’t even have to hate Mexicans, or think Spanish is stupid, or rant against the metric system, to think this way.

Lots of illegals have kids born here. US citizens. We don’t want them to turn out like the french muslims–alineated and bitter and burning cars: Better plan on assimilating them as fast as we can: get them into schools and learn about the US; get them into colleges and into jobs. The kids born here will be voting soon enough in large numbers: better get them prepared and that means into schools.
Unless you want people spreading disease, forget about denying them health care.
Be glad we got mexican immigrants as opposed to what many other countries received. They work hard, and don’t want to burn down buildings or stone women that leave their house without a male relative.
The only way to deal with this is to assimiliate as best and as fast as we can.
May 7, 2009 - 6:07 pm 75. Frustrated:California is so far down this road is is not possible to go back.
“21. Concerned” is absolutely correct.
Illegal immigration will NEVER be stopped as long as we keep offering (or even TALKING about) amnesty, earned residency, legalization, ad nauseum.
Example: if a burglar steals your TV and jewelry, should the judge award the convicted thief your TV and jewelry, even with a fine?? If he did give them to the burglar, do you think burglaries would increase or decrease in your neighborhood?? Awarding the ill-gotten goods (residency) to illegal aliens will only INCREASE future illegal immigration. Why is that so hard to understand? It is simple human nature.
And with all due respect, why does VDH continue to trot out that tired old false dichotomy, so popular with former President George W. Bush, Sen. McCain and Sen. Kennedy: “We can’t deport 12 million illegal aliens, THEREFORE (sic) we must give them a pathway to citizenship.”
BS. They refuse to admit that attrition through enforcement is working in the states that employ it. Unfortunately, we keep refusing to enforce our federal laws, including the federal law outlawing the hiring of unlawful workers, the 1996 federal law against sanctuary cities, etc., etc., etc. And Sen. Reid refuses to make E-verify permanent and mandatory. We are not even TRYING to enforce our laws. Reid even refused to make E-Verify mandatory for the trillion dollar ’stimulus’ spending – 15% of all Federal construction work will be done by illegal aliens now. Remember that when you are paying your taxes.
Many states are now enacting legislation to force self-deportation via strict enforcement, out of frustration with the inaction of the feds. And it’s working – at the state level.
A majority of both Democrats and Republicans favor this oft-unmentioned alternative – law enforcement and self-deportation. The SAVE Act was killed by Pelosi and Reid, and it would have passed if allowed a vote.
Check this poll – the only one to offer all three alternatives: http://www.jmi.com/immigrationmarches/zogby5.html
Note that a majority of both parties chose against the Senate ‘amnesty’ bill.
Again, with all due respect, VDH is dead wrong on the solution to this problem.

May 7, 2009 - 10:34 pm 79. Shef Rogers:A simple reminder for VDH: Bush did nothing, absolutely nothing, to stop illegal immigration. He was all for it, because it drove wages down. That’s such an obvious fact that it’s kind of gross watching so-called conservatives try to avoid facing it.
May 8, 2009 - 4:10 am 80. BettyBlue:gcblues pretty much displays the sort of mind set responsible for this problem in the first place. America/American/English bad, Mexicans, superior. “Trailer Trash” are bad, because gc wants a erlationship with his vassals—er, workers; I suspect the relationship he wants is “master-servant”, “King-serfs”, which is why he doesn’t want government, and rule of law, butting in on his fiefdom.
I’m just glad he’s not in this country, anymore. And his contempt for, and dislike of, English, is pretty obvious, since he’s never learned to write it.
May 8, 2009 - 8:14 am 81. Clayton E. Cramer:“they believe that deportation will cause their wages to rise making there life better. that would be despite the fact that costs would rise faster than their wages.”
This is very confused. There are several interwoven factors.
1. Illegal aliens depress wages. If they all left, I wouldn’t expect unskilled labor rates to rise dramatically–but even $1-$3 an hour, for people at the very bottom, really matters.
2. There isn’t very much actual labor in most of the items that illegal aliens produce. Even a $3 an hour increase in agricultural labor rates would mean what? How many tomatoes does a farm laborer pick in an hour? Hundreds? At most, we might see tomatoes go up a few cents.
3. Because illegal aliens are paid so poorly, they don’t have health insurance, and many employers who hire them don’t offer it. So illegal aliens end up becoming drains on the public health system. I don’t blame them for this; I blame employers who are willing to socialize the costs of their cheap and docile labor supply, while privatizing the benefits of it.

Most here are probably a ‘they’ to you, but not the ‘they’ you describe.
It sounds like you think your opinion is superior. Alright then. I hope you feel better.
May 8, 2009 - 10:48 am 84. Odysseus:Great post, but I have one question: What makes you think the illegals want to be US citizens? Remittances are Mexico’s first or second largest source of income. Therefore, it occurs to me that most, if not all, illegals really just want to work here. That is why W’s plan for a guest worker program was such an elegant compromise. Too bad the “deport en-masse” types won the day. As a result, we now have the troika of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi and we can probably expect full amnesty to come from that. The last general amnesty was 1983’s Simpson-Mazzoli bill. Let’s hope that in another twenty-five years, if millions of new Democrat voters hasn’t wiped us out and we’re back in power and if this comes up again, we’ll have the good sense to go for a compromise instead of digging in our heels.

“By 2050, there will be 50,000,000 Muslims in the USA.”
If the Muslims have any brains, they will drop their religion and Americanize. Don’t underestimate the younger generations. Education works wonders.

“i closed my American business due to high taxes and stupid regulation in the usa.”
I don’t think so. You closed your business because whatever you were doing was crap and no quality. American products are superior than any inferior quality stuff made around the world. We compete with high-quality producing countries.

What is at stake here– America or simply some dust ups about “policy”?
What does a law abiding American Citizen do during a time when the Democratic Republic of America is being taken over by an American Hating Affirmative action group of idiots who are riding rough shod over the Constitution.
Who are stuffing ballet boxes, who are breaking the laws in the name of “empathy” and political correctness.
Who are taking away large segments of the “free market” economy. Who with the Cronies in the market place are protecting and preserving their own stolen wealth–from productive Americans.
Handed to them by stupid politicians who didn’t even read what they were signing over.
Can we no longer vote the bastards out? Or are we selling America out simply because our “senior rep” gives us a “new bridge” at the same time she/he is skimming millions along with his relatives.
An American defeat, All under the false emergencies created by essentially monetary policy that government “politicians” dictated originally in an unconstitutional way. For what?– the votes of non productive Americans who are being created faster than they can be supported. Spewed into the streets of America by a Unionized and corrupt educations system swamping the welfare roles with unproductive “citizens”.
Class warfare has been going on since the end of WWII. Essentially embedded as an idea within the Democratic Party, promises to the ignorant that cannot be kept.
Pushed by BHO and the likes of Nancy Pelosi whose ignorance and stupidity breaks all normal bounds. It Makes any comment possible without thought or consideration as to result.
No real capitalism here. Just crony Chicago style thievery. Gangsterism.
When do Americans start to realize that they no longer live in the United States of America under the precepts of a Democratic Republic as formed by the founding fathers and the constitution. Where real justice is blind.
When do you, if you are really American, have beliefs that you will fight for? When does that process begin to seep into the consciousness?
When do we recognize that the United States of America has been defeated by the 5Th column communists/socialists that have infested the United States since the 1930’s.
When do we realize that a parasitic perfumed scorpion of chaos and proven to be unworkable social theory has taken over America.
It does not help people it consolidates power. Does that mean anything to you idiots.
What are we to do? What does the military do when each soldier has sworn to preserve and protect the constitution of the United States of America from its enemies both Foreign and Domestic?
Think about it if you can keep a single thought in your mind for more than 5 minutes.
I am not yet dumb enough to ask what is going to be done about it.
Nothing until abject failure and the crushing fall of America is felt by all of us.
Then we will start to study what it is that we lost.
We will then recognize what we did not before. If you do not now know what action is you will then if you are still around when the rebuilding starts.
“Whosoever perfumes a scorpion will not be spared his sting”
For those who now think Obama is their savior. Think again.
May 9, 2009 - 1:12 pm 87. steveg:#27 K…Interesting post. You should consider writing the story of your life, and then with success of the book, a movie. You could promote the movie as being the intellectual female ‘Forest Gump’ epic.
May 9, 2009 - 5:38 pm 88. steveg:#83 Ron Kean….No, they are totalitarian leftist, and think they rule all, even libertarian/conservative blogs.
May 9, 2009 - 6:32 pm 89. Rusty1961:For conservatives it was the improbable notion that they were going to deport 12-20 million illegal aliens en masse–a mass exodus along the lines of partition between Pakistan and India.
Let me get this straight, we can put a man on the moon but we can’t deport 12-20 million ILLEGAL ALIENS?
Well, if I was an enemy of the US I’d just have my army “sneak” across the US border and get in on the Amnesty.
Game over.
Honestly, you “Americans”, and I use the term loosely as most of you aren’t worthy of the term, don’t have the gonads to keep your country.

May 15, 2009 - 2:27 pm 91. TL Winslow:The age-old pesky U.S.-Mexico border problem has taxed the resources of both countries, led to long lists of injustices, and appears to be heading only for worse troubles in the future. Guess what? The border problem can never be solved. Why? Because the border IS the problem! It’s time for a paradigm change.
Never fear, a satisfying, comprehensive solution is within reach: the Megamerge Dissolution Solution. Simply dissolve the border along with the failed Mexican government, and megamerge the two countries under U.S. law, with mass free 2-way migration eventually equalizing the development and opportunities permanently, with justice and without racism.
