This is what happens when you offer to talk to thugs without preconditions. You give them the right of first refusal, and there are few things a thug enjoys more than kicking sand in the face of a weakling.
Well, guess what? They don’t like us any better, they don’t respect us more, and our reputation is not improved. We have in fact lost respect and our reputation is diminished and who gives a load if they like us better or not? We’re the weakling, and the bullies run the playground.

People, especially liberals, just can’t get the idea many cultures perceive this as weakness and must respond with strength. Middle eastern cultures especially only respond to power and strength.
