I'll probably get 36-hour workweeks soon because the State of Arizona's budget is based on sales and property taxes and is also one of the leaders in foreclosures and is still in the midst of a ridiculous bubble. It's a day off every other week, but unpaid.

Compared to the alternative, I'll take it.

Still, WTF? This guy wants to mandate something that pretty much already exists. Is this some sort of gloryhound bullshit or what? I don't think it's a stupid idea so much as an unnecessary one. Especially since the jobs that don't have paid vacation days are pretty much temp stuff where the employee says "I won't be available next week as I'll be out of town" and the employer can't argue much about it.

And a massive influx of ponies would cause massive stagnation of our economy. All those lost hours spent unproductively brushing their manes and polishing the saddles? We should be exporting ponies if we want to get ahead economically. But not to France, where they'll make Le Chevalle Petit sandwiches.

I'm just happy that Dear Leader has given me my invisible, ghost unicorn, Thunderbolt. Some say that Thunderbolt doesn't exist, but Dear Leader wouldn't disappoint or lie to us, so Thunderbolt does exist.

It's silly and, business law being primarily a state-level concern, raises yet more federalism worries, but that said, I'm with those who say, "what's the big deal?

Is there any employer in the country who will be effected by this? Seriously? Some on the part-time front, but that's about it. IMO, what this shows more than anything is that Conyers hasn't a clue about how American businesses operate.

1) Who doesn't get paid vacation? I've never had a job as an adult that doesn't offer PTO!
2) I'd really dig a pony, actually.

Is it surprising to learn that China has experimented with forced holidays to stimulate the economy? I had the dubious luck to be in Beijing during one of them. "Go shopping," came the order from the Communist Party. Some people went to car dealerships, but they couldn't buy anything because you can't buy a car in China without going through a hundred miles of red tape, and all the relevant government agencies were closed -- due to the holiday. Any chance our government would do something that silly?

I don't know how to put it nicely, but the fact that I've never had a job after the age of 19 that didn't have paid vacation has sort of kept me motivated to work my way through college, then since graduation (dear God, 12 and half years ago) I've kept my skills marketable so that I get the salaried job with the paid vacation. Then I'm married with a family and taking the full two weeks has proven to actually be a challenge (a hastle even. Three cheers for the 5 days I get to roll over). Those that have jobs that do not have paid vacations are not near as commonplace for adults as the media make them out to be (and one hopes that well paid freelance consultants aren't the target demographic here). And not to put to fine a point on it, but if you do mandate it, the increase in crowds at the vacation hotspots will disuade many people from going. I went to Disney on spring break this year. For one day. The population of a small country resides in southwestern Orlando on spring break. School schedules and things of that sort dictate when the time can be taken anyway. Lastly, and the statement sure to prevent me from ever getting to run for office, when are people going to frickin' realize that the problem facing our economy is not a lack of discretionary spending from the so called "have nots." The "Haves" are not spending and that is the problem in a nutshell (of course, a big part of the problem is a third class: the "haves with more than they can afford" which runs through all classes). And the Democrats are making it infinitely more difficult for the Haves to stimulate the economy. This is just another example. I'm just loving the Economic Amateur Hour we are living under.

Of all the possible benefits that could be mandated, paid vacation is the only one I can understand. Some jobs are hazardous to mental health, but it would be politically risky to require paid vacation only for people working odd shifts or erratic work schedules.

You know what else would stimulate the economy? If we gave everyone a pony.

Don't you think that a unicorn for everybody would do it better?

If it's a pony, I'd like a pony of Sierra Nevada pale ale.
