Fight the Future

Get a taste of the new CAFE standards, when a new car that “isn’t much when it comes to stopping, going and turning” will be about the most exciting thing you’ll be able to buy.

And that’s a Honda.

Just imagine the GM version….

Doesn’t matter. After four years of Obamanomics, most people won’t be able to afford a new car yesterday. At least we’ll get an ironic laugh at the law of unintended consequences.

The future is in aftermarket conversions, people. That’s about the only sure car market, since new cars will be overregulated, old cars will be cheap to acquire, and a lot of people will be working to make their cars last as long as possible.

jon, haven’t you heard the statement from Dear Leader about paying people to trade in their old cars i.e., no used car market. And do you honestly think the greens will allow aftermarket conversions? That wouldn’t help with getting rid of greenhouse gases.

While there is a great amount of desire on the part of the government (no matter who is in charge) for us to replace our old cars with new ones, it’s not going to happen that greens will be able to stop aftermarket conversions. Sure, there will always be some emissions checks, but I don’t think those will keep us from being able to enjoy driving, unless we have no imagination or creativity. One of the fastest quarter-milers in the country does it in a 72 Datsun*, so I’m not worried about the future. The government will not be able to stop the used car market, since there is a huge glut of cars on the road (actually, “sitting in driveways” is more accurate,) and while a payoff for gas-guzzlers may be promising for some results and some car owners, trading something paid for is a hard sell in a market where exchanging that for a car with payments is the result.

A day when government agents cruise Craigslist to stop illicit car sales is about as likely as all the conspiracies of the Chrysler Dealership Truthers being proven true.
