Well. Not content with an unprecedented four primetime news conferences to date in his young administration, President Obama now needs to address the entire public school system. And not just for a Hey-Kids-Howya-Doin-I’m-Your-New-President-So-Be-Good-In-School-This-Year-Mmmkay? speech.
You know, like back when I was a kid and Jimmy Carter would come around and hand out balloon animals at parties. Or maybe those were clowns. I get confused. Anyway.
Nope, Obama can’t just say hey to the kiddies and encourage them to do their homework. He has to make this a — what does the Left call it? — a teachable moment. A speech-in, if you will. Teachers have even been given handy instructions on how best to integrate The One into the classroom. Here’s some fun educational-type stuff your young son or daughter might be doing next week:
• Teachers could ask students to share the ideas they recorded, exchange sticky notes or stick notes on a butcher paper poster in the classroom to discuss main ideas from the speech, i.e. citizenship, personal responsibility, civic duty.
• Students could discuss their responses to the following questions:
What do you think the President wants us to do?Does the speech make you want to do anything?
You mean, other than hurl?
Oh, and this:
Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?
It’s not mere education — it’s learnyness!
Now my son is young enough that he won’t be subjected to the President’s smiling face, dulcet tones, and calls to action. He won’t be pressured by his teachers or peers to go along or get with the program.
Your kids might not be so lucky.
In impossible times, the only way to be a responsible parent is to do the irresponsible thing. If my son were in a public school…
I’d call him in sick next Tuesday. I’d keep him home. I suggest you do so. I urge you to do so. If pressed, be honest about your reasons — but be reasonable about presenting them. Otherwise, don’t offer an explanation. Make it a silent protest.
And while your kids are home, think up some patriotic games to play. Rent the delightful (and true-in-spirit-if-not-in-fact) musical, 1776. Set off some fireworks. Make it a mini Fourth of July.
Can’t take the time off work? Well, I’m sure you have at least one patriotic neighbor with an older child, who might jump at the chance to play a little sanctioned hooky — and make some babysitting money, too.
Spread the word. Pass the link around. And see if the President’s face is still smiling, when he realizes he’s talking to half-empty classrooms. Do make it a teachable moment — one where the would-be teacher does the learning.
UPDATE: Lovely evil genius Dana Loesch had the same idea.
UPDATE: Joanne Jacobs, who’s a specialist here, disagrees.
ONE MORE: Kate’s kid will be in school.

Sep 1, 2009 - 6:29 pm 5. Frank Martin:Can you imagine the fun that would have occurred if Bush had tried such a thing? Remember the number of school teachers who wouldnt even allow a picture of the President to be put in class? Remember the teachers who wanted students to write letters to the President to protest the war? Lets try a bit of that for this and watch what happens. Lets watch and see how the rights of the protesters are protected now.
I’d say that this is one of the most repulsive things Ive ever seen, but I know I have 3 1/2 years left to go in this administration, so maybe I will just say its the most repulsive thing they have done so far. Its just downright creepy. To me this seems like a massive miscalculation that can only make whatever problems he has with the voting public that much worse.
Is there no shame at all in this administration?
Sep 1, 2009 - 9:49 pm 6. frank martin:Oh and let me add that my crystal ball sees a rash of school fire alarms going off just before this meeting. Parents across the nation suddenly needed to take their kids out of school to have their braces tightened. I see PTA meetings across the country overrun with parents angry that little johnny and jane and being discrimnated against because they werent there the day the President spoke. I see Gymnasiums across the nation filled with sudden coughing fits where the word “bullshit” can barely be understood through the muffled coughs of the giggling students. I see red-in-the-face teachers who suddenly realize that now they are “the establishment” and the kids look at them the way they looked at LBJ. Speaking as a former “Audio/Visual” geek, I can hardly count the animal house style mischief were couldda done with this back-in-the-day. I got a ‘teachable moment’ for you junior, its called ‘civil disobedience’, and here’s how we did it back when the man we were fighting was Richard Nixon,not Barack Obama. Big banner drops from the ceiling with the words “EAT ME”, you know, that sort of thing.
I wonder what the impact will be to school districts of there is a sudden rash of one day absences reported on that day? How much to the feds pay per day? All that revenue, flushed because someone just had to push the envelope of politics.

My son, when he was 13, passed calculus in the ninth grade. He attends Princeton University. My daughter, 8th grade, 12 years old, is not very dumb either. Either they’ll let her question what has transpired, with debate, or they will tell her to sit down and shut up. In the latter case, they’ll have created a constitutional patriot forever. Let them create their own destruction.

Sep 2, 2009 - 2:49 am 13. Mike Murray:Public school teachers are, no doubt, anxious to repay the prez for his staunch anti-voucher position. If, however, my local school system allows itself to be hijacked on September 8th by Obama, I won’t forget.
I will consider that absurdity the next time the school board asks me to approve an increase in my property taxes. That will be my “lesson” to them.
To those who say I’ll only be punishing the children, I say this: If the school system has days to waste on political propaganda, it certainly has more money than it needs already.

They will not be going to school on Sept. 8 if my school is participating — and it being Oahu, I’d say there’s very little chance it will not participate.
We will go to Pearl Harbor or some other patriotically educational place instead and discuss the difference America and her soldiers have made in the world.
Sep 2, 2009 - 4:12 am 17. Gary S.:> Now my son is young enough that he won’t

That makes your decision fairly easy.
What do I do, with two elementary school children? I don’t feel good about keeping them out of school. First, I don’t want to teach them that we should skip things just because they are difficult. Second, it’s the first day of school in our district, which is exciting.
I think I’m going to have a talk with my kids before Tuesday. I’ll come up with a way to tell my two little ones that 1) we respect others’ viewpoints (including kids whose parents are Obama worshipers), but 2) no one is right all the time, much less this president.
For damage control purposes, my wife has graciously volunteered to watch the speech if it is available online, since I’ll be at work. I sort of think they’ll password-protect it, since they don’t want us to know what they’re telling our kids, but there’s always HOPE, right? …right?

Sep 2, 2009 - 4:37 am 19. sydneyj:Disclaimer: I live in Texas.
I propose that Immediately following the prez that Gov. Perry comes on tv and, to a shot of a couple of cowgirls on matched paints, riding into an arena holding the American,and the Texas flag,introduces himself and his position in the state government.
The Governor then should give facts about Texas education,ie. the number of students in Texas, the number of Mexican students daily crossing the border for their education, the dollars Texas parents spend yearly for their childrens’ education, etc.
He should then move on, informing and showing his audience the virtues of our state, with requisite shots of the great cities, airports, industries, the great universities, the great medical facilities, the marvelous job and career opportunities.
The possibilities are endless! After politely thanking the prez for emphasizing education, invite all children to Austin and our capitol to see government in action.
No TV station in Texas could turn it down and I think it would soon become viral in other media.
WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!
I think people might be making too much of a big deal over this. The speech might be something as simple as encouraging reading, learning, the importance of education. After all, whether we like it or not, a lot of kids LIKE the president and respect him. If he can use that to help kids take more of an interest in school, then why not.
Plus, even though this speech is for all students, I kind of think it’s more directed to minorities, especially black males, and children in inner city schools.
I agree with the posters above who said to watch the speech with your kids. From what I understand, it will be available for anyone to see, so, even if you’re keeping your child home, you should be able to watch it on cable, the Internet, etc.
Regardless of how we, as parents, feel about the president, I think we still want to teach our children to be respectful of the office of the president, even if we disagree with what he is saying.
Now, if he turns this into a mildly political speech, that’s a different story! But, hopefully, he won’t do something so stupidly.

Sep 2, 2009 - 6:16 am 27. ~Paules:Nothing the president says is going to matter anyway. Our public school system is on autopilot, and has been for some time. A typical school district employs one bureaucrat at the state or local level for every two classroom teachers. The bureaucrats, often drawn from the ranks of failed teachers, spend their time creating administrative mandates of no consequence except to burden already overworked classroom teachers. Our public school system is nothing more than a jobs program. Actual learning is incidental to the process.
A kid’s ideological outlook (assuming he’s sophisticated enough to have one at all) is drawn from his family life. If mom is a moonbat who spends her time in aroma therapy, the kid will be the same sort of anti-intellectual. If the kid comes from a conservative family, his value system will be inoculation against indoctrination. The vast middle ground doesn’t know, doesn’t care, and doesn’t care to know.
The only way to improve public schooling is to deconstruct the entire edifice and start over. Schooling was never a prerogative of the federal government to begin with. The monster has grown too large to be defeated; it must be killed, the body burned, and the ashes scattered. I don’t see such a scenario, at least not in my lifetime.

Sep 2, 2009 - 6:38 am 31. Lily:Send your kids – but go with them. This is a great teaching moment, really. This is the time to explain to your kids that the Government is here to listen to us – not the other way around.
1. Go with you kids – you want to know EXACTLY what is being said to them
2. Tell the school you intend to do so (but don’t be disruptive)
3. Brief you kids before you go, and debrief them afterward (deprogram if necessary).
This is a great time to discuss you view on what role, exactly, the government should have in the lives of its people.
We are not here to serve Government. And really, we are not even here to serve society. Yes, we want to help neighbors, be good citizens etc – but our purpose is not to SERVE our community / country.

To be more serious, I suspect that Obama didn’t think of this idea. More likely, it was the same staffer, or same type of staffer, who thought of giving Gordon Brown a set of movie DVD’s which cannot be played on a British or European DVD player. Or the same screwloose who decided Obama should give Queen Elizabeth an I Pod full of recordings of his own speeches. Because it was sitting on school property they could do this. There were no drugs, and the fellow who owned the van with his seats and carpet ripped out had no recourse. Now we search backpacks and purses without even a rumor. We put black marks on records of kids caught with an aspirin. We take away a childs civil rights for the majority of their day and put them under totalitarian authority and then wonder why they come out of school thinking as they do. I know, I know, it is for their safety. But, think about it, what is safety without liberty. We take a kid for 13 years, take away his civil rights and feed him propaganda on political and religious matters and what kind of citizen does that produce. The child thinks it must be alright because mommy and daddy send me to this place everyday. “Dear Leader” showing up in their classes with a call to public service is not shocking it is just a continuation of what they have already been taught since pre-school. If you want to fix it, you better fix the whole thing. It will take more than a day sitting in your child’s classroom. By the way, if it is safety you are concerned with; call the cops, not the principal, when a minor breaks the law at school. That settles that.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Big Sis Janet N & friends are trying to scare the crapola out of you on the (still timid, much to their disappointment) swine flu. Obama’s science advisors put out last week, 90,000 deaths (or so) and even the CDC refutes that.
…a scientific advisory panel recently sent the White House a report saying it was possible that anywhere from 30 percent to half the population could catch what doctors call “2009 H1N1″ and that it was also possible there could be between 30,000 and 90,000 deaths.
“Everything we’ve seen in the U.S. and everything we’ve seen around the world suggests we won’t see that kind of number if the virus doesn’t change,” Dr. Thomas Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a C-SPAN interview last week.

Seriously, if this was Bush or Reagan, would you be OK with it? I think not! Neither would I! It’s bad enough our children are required by law to attend schools with so much political interference in the first place. The LAST thing I want is some politician using my children as a captive audience for indoctrination and proslytizing!
Your children and mine should learn things in school that prepare them to be productive and successful members of society. You and I should enjoy the privelege of teaching our children whatever philosophy, politics or religion we want. Our local schools should be beholden to us, not Washington. We should not have to tolerate this kind of interference in our relationship with our children.
Can we agree on these points?

No way will my children be subjected to forced re education by this blatant lair.
Sick Out!!
Let me get this straight…
Across the country, civics classes have been sacrificed, US history has been watered-down with pc-nonsense and the Constitution taught in a condensed, one-day session. But this administration and the DOE now think it important to emphasize the office of the President, specifically this particular President?
The fact that we no longer emphasize our history, our Constitution and our civic responsibilities as citizens, but instead are willing to showcase one man as representative of this country is a travesty. The power of America isn’t derived from its “authority figures,” its derived from its citizens.
Keeping your children away is not the answer. Arming your children with the facts so that they can think for themselves is the only way to fight the brainwashing in our school system.
“So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a thousand battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.” – Sun Tzu

Sep 2, 2009 - 10:48 am 61. DWilson:Has it occurred to anyone that a mass “sick out” of public school children on that day might have already been anticipated, and that a contingency plan would be to do the broadcast a day or two earlier? The stated reason for the change in the date would probably be an “unexpected scheduling conflict” for BHO. Don’t know if this will happen, but if it does, I won’t be surprised.
Sep 2, 2009 - 10:50 am 62. Rashputin:This guy fits the phrase, “thick as a brick”, so well. Since this broke, I’ve gotten three emails from independents, two in the neighborhood and one a friend out of state, who all said that they now see the light. I told them months ago this guy would go after the children just like Hitler did and what do you know. Here it is, right after usurping 9/11; he has this special treat for the kids the day before National Socialist Volunteer Day. He managed to finally piss off some people who were in “wait and see” mode, exactly what normal people would expect to happen when you go after people’s kids. Not this guy, though, he’s positive everyone is so brainwashed by wanting to play fair and be nice that he can run roughshod over them and get away with it.
Anyone still thinking this guy isn’t intent of tearing the country apart better decide right now how they’re going like going down with him because this isn’t your father’s “conservative backlash”. This is when the great mass of average, conservative, Americans who are the real oppressed in this country takes the country back from top to bottom and leave none of the democrat apparatus in place for them to revive themselves with. President had a Mooslim Ramadamadingdang dinner, announces his special day to tell your children to straighten out Mom and Dad, usurped the 9/11 commemoration of the WTC attack, and sends the below listed instruction out for his volunteers to follow on 9/11. Couple that one week with the nationalization of huge parts of the economy and you can’t ignore either the fact that he hates this country or that he’ll do whatever it takes to destroy it. When his “community organizing” doesn’t work, how long will it be until Ayers and his disciples are blowing things up again on behalf of their revolution and blaming it on whoever they want to jail for it?
Scroll down the following to the “Fight Back …” article.

That is what he has in mind for children to be telling their parents and how he frames those he disagrees with. A large part of the reason we got into the mess we’re in is because so many people ignored or shrugged off what was happening in our school systems and in the universities. Isn’t it about time we quit ignoring it and throw out school boards and revoke the charter of many a university as well as voting out those at the top? Leave their infrastructure in place and you accomplish nothing, we’ve seen that clearly just since the past election. It’s time to either stop these people once and for all or just go ahead and surrender yourself to the state.
Keep your kids home that day, it’s the only thing that makes a statistical impact on the idiots because they can’t hide it and the absentee count impacts a wide range of funding and other programs. Even better, if you can figure out how to do it, both parents stay home with them in protest. I know it’s crazy, but if enough people stayed home from work on the same day it would show this crowd they can be out “community organized” as well as encouraging a lot of the people who want to stop this crowd.

I imagine that there will be many children absent or be sent with a note to the teacher that the child must not participate in this unamerican activity (propaganda). The safest is to just keep children home from school and tell them if when they return to school they have to watch a taped rerun of this mess to go to the principals office and complain and to call home about the incident.

Sep 2, 2009 - 11:36 am 68. Dale:It’s very sad that Conservative parents are planning to pull their kids out of school to avoid hearing the President’ speech. Why?
1. It teaches your kids disrespect for the office of the presidency. Not just the Obama presidency, but every presidency.
Sep 2, 2009 - 11:38 am 69. newton:2. You’re denying your kids the right to decide whether they want to see the president’s speech.
3. You are teaching your kids that they can just choose to walk away from education if they don’t care for, or agree with the subject matter. In other words, you’re teaching your kids to be intellectually lazy.
4. You are denying your kids the opportunity to hear some words that might (shocker!) actually inspire them.
5. Childhood is tough enough, and you are making it that much tougher and more awkward by segregating your kid from the rest of his peers because of your own selfish and irrational feelings about the president.
6. After a childhood of being denied the right to learn new things and think independently, your kid will eventually realize that your need to keep him in a caccoon of right wing ideology was never for his/her own good, but rather for yours, and the life-long resentment and distrust begins.
At least my two girls are under the age of 3. I’m already considering different student curricula for them. Homeschooling is a possibility.
This day should become the wake-up call for parents across the country. Don’t just keep them at home one day and then return them the next day! Take them out of the public schools! There are plenty of educational alternatives out there. Sure, it might cost you a bit, but it should be money well spent in the end.
Because again, what’s the alternative to YOU being the one who decides your kid’s education? The Little Book of Mao, at the other end.

My son felt he could not speak out at all in class. One girl did and she was made fun of. I asked if he wanted me to say anything, he said no, I told him if I did, he would probably be ostracized or would get bad grades from this teacher.
I feel that that treatment is totally uncalled for and is NOT teaching. This year I WILL TAKE A STAND and not let this happen again.

Sep 2, 2009 - 12:33 pm 92. William in Arizona:I agree with all of the folks who are extremely wary of this particular individual’s access to America’s youth in a public school venue. Obama’s radical, Progressive ideology is well known by most American adults by now, thus most objective, observant adults are rightly alarmed by this stunt.
As an analogy, consider the effusive praise and blind adoration lavished upon a recent pop culture icon, Michael Jackson, by his fans. Despite the well-founded suspicions surrounding MJ’s ‘affection’ for children, many of his fans simply chose to ignore this fundamental dysfunction and worship him anyway. This is how I see the Left’s absolution of Obama’s Socialist Progressive dysfunction, except now, they’ll have us believe that it would be all right to allow our kids to spend a little quality time with the man and his affliction. If you have faith in the objective, rational mind of your elementary school child, allowing him/her to take in this in-school address may be just fine — but I, personally, wouldn’t expose my child to it.
One last concern I have about this is the precident this sets. This time, the President’s intrusion into our children’s scholastic cocoon may be innoculous, but this may lead to subsequent ideological panderings, by this and other means, by federal entities. The homefront is one of the last bastions of conservative values — allowing ideologues, such as this President, to abridge that relationship with your children would be as appalling as allowing Micheal Jackson to influence your child’s ideas of a proper adult-child relationship.

Sep 2, 2009 - 12:38 pm 95. Rashputin:Dale –
“1. It teaches your kids disrespect for the office of the presidency. Not just the Obama presidency, but every presidency.”
Bull chit, any disrespect for the office they learned they would have learned from the past eight years of unremitting lies and signs that suddenly are too harsh to take to a protest now that Obama is in office. You smelt it, you delt it, as the kids used to say.
“2. You’re denying your kids the right to decide whether they want to see the president’s speech.”
Bull chit, you’re denying that the school system, particularly the lower grades, are not a political venue for you and yours probably because you’ve spent decades turning them into another arm of the political agenda you support. The only denying of speed involved is the lack of any balance in anything taught in schools these days.
“3. You are teaching your kids that they can just choose to walk away from education if they don’t care for, or agree with the subject matter. In other words, you’re teaching your kids to be intellectually lazy.”
Bullshit, being force fed your point of view or the Presidential point of view either one would have been out of bounds were it Bush speaking to them and it’s no different now. You chose to walk away from education yourself and by defending the making of education into nothing but a political venue you admit it whether you realize it or not.
“4. You are denying your kids the opportunity to hear some words that might (shocker!) actually inspire them.”
What, inspire them the way Alensky inspired Obama? No thanks, I don’t want Che, Fidel, or the October Revolution to be the inspiration for my children so having one of their followers even attempt to inspire them is out of bounds. Yes, as a parent I have the right and in fact the obligation to keep them from being led astray and anyone who spends his time with terrorist bombers and avowed communists is intent on leading them astray. Shocker indeed, that you’d like the idea of a single ideology being forced on the students when you thought it was horrible for Bush to even speak at a tea somewhere without Congressmen running before waiting propaganda networks to disagree and swear he didn’t really like the tea as he claimed to.
“5. Childhood is tough enough, and you are making it that much tougher and more awkward by segregating your kid from the rest of his peers because of your own selfish and irrational feelings about the president.
Blah, more Bull chit. Childhood isn’t your and your masters test bed to turn children’s minds into clones of your own, it’s not awkward for children to miss a political bullshit speech, but you know it’s awkward for them to be set in front of the television by their teacher and then not nod their little heads in agreement if she wants them to. You’re the selfish and irrational one if you think any president deserves access to my children on demand for whatever reason.
“6. After a childhood of being denied the right to learn new things and think independently, your kid will eventually realize that your need to keep him in a caccoon of right wing ideology was never for his/her own good, but rather for yours, and the life-long resentment and distrust begins.”
A childhood of being denied the right to play Russian Roulette is no not denying your child the right and ability to learn anything new, it’s denying the right to do things that are not good for them and no matter what your think, listening to this SOB spew his collectivist crap is not good for them.
It’s ironic, but you folks that have for so long bathed the October Revolution in Russia in a special glow and sought to emulate it may be about to see what an October Revolution is like American style. I hope you won’t mind 24/7/365 enforced viewing of Reagan and Republicans on your television any more than the you think others should turn their kids over to whatever idiot you think deserves respect. I’m sure you don’t know this, but respect is EARNED, not given for nothing. I respect the office of the presidency, not the individual now in that office. That’s how it works according to you and others who enjoyed your eight years of hideous lies and defamation.

Sep 2, 2009 - 1:49 pm 108. rrpjr:“Barack Obama is a fundamentally lazy man.”
Correct. This has been attested to by contempararies at Harvard and in Chicago. He was the only President of the Harvard Law Review who didn’t submit a piece for his year’s issue. His co-chairmanship stint at Chicago Annenberg Challenge came to nothing after he squandered $50 million of philanthropic funds. There’s a disabled black woman in Chicago still railing at Obama for abandoning the asbestos-abatement project at her tenement he was supposed to manage. Poor follow-through, poor attention span, easily distracted by new opportunisties. A good executive with vision who knows how to delegate can compensate for some of these deficiencies. Obama is not one, has never operated or managed any kind of enterprise to fruitful end.

I would definitely remove my child from school. But I WOULD RECORD THE BROADCAST and after having a chance to review what the Teacher-in-Chief had to say to my child I would devise my own discussion plans and sit down together to explain (in MY words) what the president is saying.

Notice what Obama is doing. Rather than focusing on individual action and responsibility, he is telling the children to Obey Obama. He is asking them to think about ‘what the President wants you to do’ rather than, as in a Republic,what YOU, as a responsible and thinking FREE individual, want to do for your country.
Sep 2, 2009 - 1:57 pm 113. karlinsync:This mailing cost the American taxpayers a ton of money. It should have been sent to School Boards! It would be up to local Boards to decide whether to go along with this indoctrination. Does the Federal govt. now in the hands of this administration not care where tax dollars are going? Where is the fiscal responsibility? This Democratic lead Congress has NO shame in spending taxpayer’s monies. Enough is enough!
Sep 2, 2009 - 1:59 pm 114. Samizdat:I reviewed the story on Drudge and read this piece. What is the President going to speak to students about? I saw the teaching points but didn’t see the specific subject matter of his address. Please fill me in Pajamas commentators.
Sep 2, 2009 - 2:00 pm 115. Drew:While the argument that it might be more educational to have the students listen to the President and discuss the speech with them, there are a couple reasons I think keeping them home is the better approach. I would be more worried about a teacher and/or administration that would use the speech for the sake of indoctrinating the little tykes than I would be about the President’s speech itself. I’m sure his words will be innocuous on the surface, but quite useful to educators with a lefty agenda. (The curriculum I’m reading seems full of very leading questions.)
If you do keep your kids home, it’s important (I think) to let your school know why. If more people would object to the politicizing of the classroom, we might see a change — at least at the local level. And perhaps some teachers would find their backbones to object also if enough parents supported them.
Anyway, it’s one day, one event. Since being exposed to (or skipping) one event is unlikely to negatively affect your child, might as well just keep him home and let your absence make the proper statement.
As for disrespecting the President, I think the teachable moment here is that the President is not a monarch/dictator/emperor or someone who we must bow before.
Sep 2, 2009 - 2:02 pm 116. Smartist Parent:I’ve taught my children to be independent thinkers and not to trust everything that people assert to be fact, even those with great authority. Which is why I’m keeping them both out of school to organize a neighborhood Constitutional themed party so they can decide themselves how much of a liar and a fascist our president is and how blind his faithful statist followers are. I’m arming my kids with the answers to use when they are hounded by their teachers for doing what I think is right. Absurd anyone? Actually, 81 Dayngr & 101 Eddie Frank said it quite well. I think you people are creepy and full of venom. Maybe it’s the love of money.
Sep 2, 2009 - 2:05 pm 117. Rashputin:Actually, it’s getting spooky across the board as we come up to 9/11. The 8th, talk to all the kids, the 9th, prime time address to Congress, (Gee, what was the 10th?), and the 11th a new day of National Socialist Volunteerism. Why the bums rush at 9/11 if it isn’t to take the focus off of the WTC attack?
This guy is every bit as bad as Hitler and all those lefties who swear they’d have resisted Hitler are holding hands and dancing along after him. It’s poetic justice I guess, that they’ll be the ones wondering how their leader could have deceived them when it all comes apart on them around Christmas.

Sep 2, 2009 - 2:57 pm 123. BrainTrust:I have tried for the last 6 months to place Obama in history. Is he the executioner? Nope, doesn’t like to get his hands dirty (besides, that’s Rahm’s job). Is he the chief counsel? Nope, not really a very good lawyer. Is he the king? Nope, he’s owned by the European banking families/Goldman Sachs. Is he the jester? Can’t be, the man has no sense of humor. Then, after hearing about the really bad idea of lecturing the school children while they are trapped in their classrooms it came to me …. Obama is the ……TOWN SCOLD.
How many times in his short career has he scolded us, brow furrowed, lips pursed, eyes darkened, voice just barely covering the whining. Twenty? Thirty?
And now he is scheduled to scold Congree next week for not giving him what he wanted in health “reform”.
But first, scold the school children. DEMAND THEY OBEY !!!
If there is anything that better illustrates this guy is not an American, it is his obliviousness to the American soul which is personified by the words … “Leave Me Alone” and “I Can Do It Myself”.
Sep 2, 2009 - 2:59 pm 124. Whitehall:Just called the Campbell Union High School District here in Silicon Valley. The lady in the superintendent’s office said she had gotten three calls on it already today but no, they had no formal word come down through channels and had no plans to participate.
That could change between now and Tuesday though. They wouldn’t say that they wouldn’t participate – they would have to read the directions. That’s a reason position for a local school district.
This is one nice feature of Big Government – it is inefficent and clumsy.

BUT – I agree with the people who are saying that they should allow their children to go to school, listen, and then participate! How surprising when the teachers do not get the response of the whole class standing and reciting the “I pledge allegiance to Obama….” I am wondering how many teachers will decline to do this? I think my daughter has pre-calculus at that time, I am pretty sure that her teacher will think that limits are more important than telling a room full of honors students that they need to study harder! He will indoctrinate only those that are already indoctrinated. My daughter (if required to watch) will find it boring, stupid, condescending, but a perfect time to check her texts under her desk! For once, I find that texting may be more valuable than I thought. HA! I haven’t had the patience to make my daughter read articles on the web (not the rags, of course) and listen to my explanations of just how dangerous this admin is. I will now.

The reason laws that pertain to students rights while attending school are what they are is that they students are mandated to be there.
Those same rules and laws, however, are somewhat different for adults freely attending public schools for meetings or protests (public events).
The adults are not mandated to be there.
When you corral kids in schools without the RIGHT to choose if they want to listen to Obama or not, that is wrong. And, it has very little to do with making choices, since students are not provided with the chance to opt out and NOT listen to Obama, the fool.

Sep 2, 2009 - 3:15 pm 130. MrsC:Keep ‘em home that day, and while you’re at it, don’t send them back. Face it, my conservative friends: the pubic educational system is founded on philosophies that would turn your stomachs, and it’s only living up to its intended purpose, to mold your children in the image of the State.
Rather than moan and wring our hands at how the liberals are trying to indoctrinate our children while continuing to place those children under their authority day after day, year after year, do the hard thing. Reject the government’s “free” education, make the sacrifice and pull your kids out.
A parochial school that espouses your beliefs is a sacrifice of money, but possibly a worthwhile one (unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to all private schools). The greatest sacrifice, however, will yield the greatest blessings: TEACH THEM YOURSELVES.
It’s insanity to keep sending them into the enemy camp:

I do not understand your reticence to make this public. What is the point in a silent protest when most of the country will not or can not participate. I think the opposite is called for. Parents should call their principals and school boards first to ask if their school is participating. If so, and they can’t keep the kids home, write the school a note saying your kids are not to participate. The admin might be able to force the school to show the address but our kids can not be forced to watch.
If, on the other hand, you’re afraid to do this, send your kid. You’re not teaching them anything by hiding your values and beliefs – might as well let Obama have ‘em. If we’re not willing to fight for our kids, what else should we be fighting for?

Sep 2, 2009 - 3:38 pm 133. singlemalt:Hi AdrianS,
Parents can keep their child out that day, that’s their call.
I just don’t get what people are so scared of. Parents can debrief their kids when they come home from school after the President’s talk.
I also think the “handy instructions” are great–have you read them? My goodness, Mr. Obama is the President of the United States. Listening to him doesn’t translate to agreeing with what he has to say (and we don’t know what he’ll be talking to them about yet) And, yes, for the record: I would have wanted my children (who are in public school, by the way) to have listened to President Bush speak to their class when he was in office.
I think it would be great to hear what the kids thought of the talk. I wouldn’t have to be there. I’d love to hear their thoughts, and that would then provide a great and valuable parent-child talk. But to encourage children not to listen to the President of the United States? I don’t get it. I just don’t get it.
Sep 2, 2009 - 3:41 pm 134. AThinkingPerson:Re #133 singlemalt: You don’t get how we “encourage children not to listen to the President of the United States?” Please, let me help you to understand. If it were President Clinton or Carter, sure, my kids would be front and center and then I would have taken the opportunity to have a good discussion with them. The Obama situation is entirely different unfortunately. It’s become obvious to me and apparently others, that Obama does NOT have the best interests of this country at heart. He operates from a point of anti-American ideals, anti-Constitution, and anti-personal responsibility. In other words, the antithesis of what a President is supposed to represent. With my viewpoint in mind, am I supposed to let him fill my impressionable kids with his rhetoric? Maybe in your corner of the world, but not in mine.
Obama has moved way past partisanship at this point. He is proving himself to be a danger to the very fabric of this country and it’s Constitution.
Sep 2, 2009 - 3:51 pm 135. William in Arizona:Re: 119
This kind of thinking (on prominent display in these comments) helps to kill the propaganda initiatives of the Left by removing the platform. By saying ‘no thanks’, parents can spare themselves the trouble of damage control after the fact. ‘Sheltering’ our young, impressionable minds is exactly the flip side of the same coin here, and when coupled with good, sound advice (and perhaps a short lesson on Trojan horses), we can manage to make this truly a teachable moment. Objective, rational communication is always a good thing 119, that’s why shielding the kids from the real possibility of a one-sided indoctrination session on the 8th is a good thing.
The people sticking their heads in the sand and crying ‘nah, nah, nah’ are the ones still carrying water for this proven Socialist Progressive front man. The ‘change’ has to start somewhere … how ironic that this President and Congress really kicked off the ‘change we can believe in’ movement at their own expense.
Sep 2, 2009 - 3:52 pm 136. Rep4Life:I do NOT see pulling kids out of class on Sept. 8th as a bad thing. In fact, I think children will get a much broader education at home on that day. Parents can choose to “go with their kids to school” if they want to. But if I had children, and I don’t yet, I would keep them home with me. Maybe do our own history lesson on the development of Politics and “why” it was initiated in the first. Honestly, I do not believe Politics or Politicians should be entering our classrooms in any form what-so-ever. This is primarily a family-oriented matter, and parents should have the right to chose whichever way they want to teach the subject of “Politics” to their own children.
Mr. President-
PLEASE! Go back to the Capitol and try and make good on some of those promises you built your platform on. So far, I have seen little to no work or completion on any of those promises which you spoke of. Should not our President be the “one person” who when he speaks, he then puts action to words?
James 2:14-26 Faith Without Works is Dead…
I will let you do your own homework and look this up. What is boils down to, Sir, is that you can “make promises” or claims or say you “have faith” all day long. But unless you take actions to back up your big speech, it is worthless and will fall on deaf ears.
So leave our children alone. They are our (individual parents) responsibility, in which to train and raise. You have your own kids to teach, leave ours to us.
I will leave you with a little joke I once heard:
“If Pro is the opposite of Con, then wouldn’t Progress be the opposite of Congress?”

Were there a new education initiative or anything at all to do with education, which by the way is what schools are supposed to be about, it would be different. This is about Obama selling a healthcare initiative that the public as a whole is deadset against and has nothing at all to do with eductation. It has to do with trying to reach parents through the manipulation of their kids, kids who will be sitting in front of teachers who belong to a union, a union that spends money to help push this healthcare agenda.
“My goodness”, indeed, how about we have Steele or maybe the minority leader of the Senate appear and talk a bit about why nationalization of the healthcare in this country is bad?
Help the president? Not a bit, in no way, not even in your dreams, and ignoring anything he does is helping him since he and his Chicago thugs count on operating in the shadows. Here’s the scoop according to The White House (http://www.whitehouse.gov/mediaresources/ –
THE PRESIDENT’S BACK-TO-SCHOOL MESSAGE TO AMERICA’S STUDENTS
Help get America’s students engaged!
On Tuesday, September 8 — the first day of school for many students — the President will talk directly to students across the country on the importance of taking responsibility for their education, challenging them to set goals and do everything they can to succeed.
We want to make sure that as many schools and classrooms nationwide can participate in this special opportunity, so we are making the President’s address and all the information that comes with it available as widely as possible.
Whether you are a teacher, a school board member, or a member of the media, find information below to help you watch and be engaged with the President in welcoming our students back to school.

2 PHONE CALLS ON 9/11 – Illinois! (Health Care Organizing Event)
STAY HOME FOR THIS EVENT! DO NOT GO ANYWHERE!
Stay HOME:
—* The Event consists of ALL OF US Making Two Phone Calls on one particular, single day.
—* We call each of our State Senators (phone numbers are below) on that day.
What day? Our US Senators return to DC the Tues after Labor Day. That next FRIDAY, Sep 11, is Patriot Day, designated in memory of the nearly three thousand who died in the 9/11 attacks.
All 50 States are coordinating in this – as we fight back against our own Right-Wing Domestic Terrorists who are subverting the American Democratic Process, whipped to a frenzy by their Fox Propaganda Network ceaselessly re-seizing power for their treacherous leaders.
DO YOU WANT to ensure passage of the Public Plan? Since 75% of Americans support it, I guess it’s time for us Seventy-Five Percenters to be heard. Why Public Plan? = Because It’s American To Take Care Of Our Own!
And, according to a White House Advisor to the President with whom I spoke ten days ago at a DNC Panel, he said, “ON ONE DAY you ‘burn-up’ the Senate Switchboards – THE NEXT DAY you’ve got the Senator’s attention”. We will achieve that effect, on Friday, Patriot Day 9/11.
Auto-generated emails will remind you about our Armchair Public Plan Slam-Dunk Two-Phone-Call Call-A-Thon. Plus I will email you that day, too. And, if you’re proud you joined-in, then email me (the Host) back, when you’ve made your calls. I will be honored to report our massive numbers to OFA for them to brag on the web.
2 PHONE CALLS ON 9/11 – BE A TRUE PATRIOT –
DEFEAT ANTI-DEMOCRATIC FORCES OF HATE WHO CONSPIRE TO REMAIN HEALTHY + WEALTHY WHILE THE PUBLIC LANGUISHES UNDER THE BURDEN OF OUR PRESENT HEALTH CARE SYSTEM –
—* TELL THEM: “I’m calling from the city of [xxx] – and I AM mad as Hell – and I AM NOT going to take it anymore, If You Don’t Mind!”…
—* TELL THEM: “Please make the Public Plan the Law of the Land –
—* TELL THEM: “Because IT’S AMERICAN TO TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN.”
—* TELL THEM: “Tell that to my Senator – Thank you, Good-bye.”
That’s it – simple – all you need is a calendar, an armchair and a phone, for us to have a good strong voice.
Ask your friends if they want to join our Public Plan Call-A-Thon on 9/11: Patriot’s Day –
Sep 2, 2009 - 6:30 pm 169. AThinkingPerson:Re #168 That phone call blitz doesn’t surprise me. Isn’t it crazy that the liberals are so desperate that they are now resorting to this? Now that all of their ACORN thugs and Obama minions are back in their community colleges studying Food Service 101, the remaining sheeple must now do automated calling to get their socialist agenda rammed through. Such is the life of a Obamazombie. I almost feel sorry for them.

Real Americans will use this as a Teachable moment.

Sep 2, 2009 - 7:33 pm 172. Moho:Rashputin. I have no comment, except I hope you don’t stop doing this kind of thing. The phrase, “your own worst enemy” almost doesn’t do you justice. I think most of your enemies wouldn’t be as ruthlessly intent on making you look like an idiot.
Sep 2, 2009 - 7:41 pm 173. tommyd:Like Michell Malkin reminded us just a few minutes ago…
Obama has already used children in his obsession.
What about the 11 y/o girl at the fake town hall a few weeks ago. He had no problem using a young child that could not have possibly known what she was really doing at the time. What makes anyone think he would not use your kids if he can get away with it.
How about those famous obama child singers at his corination.. Oh how sweet that was.
Maybe he can get some uniforms from Hugo Chavez or Kim Jong’s PR people for the kids.
Obama, nothing but a third rate dictator wannabe… Has no idea what it means to govern,
America, home of the free, Not the free ride….(to quote a tea party goer)
Sep 2, 2009 - 7:43 pm 174. Moho:LET ME BE CLEAR: I don’t dislike Obama because he’s half black, psuedo-Hawaiian. I dislike Obama because he’s a socialist, deceitful, thug. Please Moho…feel free to cut and paste me on that.
There you go, you got your wish. I would be more inclined to consider your little fig leafs to hide your racism if you actually knew what socialism is. We already live in a socialist country, dumbass. We lived in one in 2004, and in 2000. We have scads of socialist programs. Its a matter of historical record that the US wouldn’t have survived this long without several socialist interventions in the 20th century. If we hadn’t, your toothless appalachian grandma wouldn’t have been around long enough to give birth to your mother and father. Feel free to quote that too.

Could you help us out and drop the repartee with these people? They are human beings, but they are not true Americans. They believe in a system of government that has nothing to do with our Constitution. Read Marx and his theory on the dialectic. If you keep bantering with moho, now and then, jharp and vivo your depriving the rest of us of your contributions and feeding their distraction.
Just because they have difficulty living in our republic and reject the liberty and freedoms articulated in the Constitution doesn’t mean you have to engage them in debate or defend our system and way of life.
It’s your decision, but I appeal to your better nature and ask you to join me, a recovering responder, and shut down the debate with the statist provocaters. They are fundamentally untrustworthy and dishonest about citizenship and it’s requirements in our country. Their marxism and our Constitution can’t be reconciled. It ain’t worth further debate.

Sep 2, 2009 - 8:09 pm 180. myth buster:174. Considering that many history books were written by those sympathetic to socialism, I’m not surprised that the record says that the US wouldn’t have survived this long without socialist programs. Good Lord.
Ok. If this is just a pep talk on studying hard, I’m essentially OK with it.
But I don’t trust Obama to limit it to that.
The problem is, I’m 26, and for the longest time I leaned left precisely because of this kind of thing in school. All you have to do is present the idea that “government does good things” and — HEAR ME — kids naturally come to these leftist conclusions themselves.
How? Talk about all the things government does to help people. Talk about all the government efforts to make your lives better, to make you happier, to make things equal.
Try explaining to a child that equality and helping people are bad.
Kids relate to this, it’s a natural trust of people who have good intentions. Kids aren’t cynical about politics.
“Hi, I’m President Obama. I work in the White House. It is my privilege and pleasure to make America a better place, and that’s what we do every day in Washington. We’re in communities, schools, businesses, looking for ways to improve everyone’s lives, to provide good quality of life for you and your parents, your grandparents. We want you to be happy, to grow up and go to college. We want you to enter the world and do your part to make it a better place, too.
You can save the world too. You can be important and smart, just like the President. You can do your part. It makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. It’s *seductive*.
With teacher material like “What do you think the President wants you to do?” you can see where this could go.
Your kids are being exposed to this every day.

Sep 2, 2009 - 8:30 pm 184. Moho:Malclave. Its generally agreed that the first one out with the parent/sex joke has the initiative. When others join in, they are merely copying, and doing a bad show of it, as you did. A particularly fumbling effort, no class or style.

Sep 2, 2009 - 8:33 pm 185. Obama Youth – Obama to indoctrinate kids on Sep 8 | Fire Andrea Mitchell!:[...] If there was ever a day for people to keep their kids out of school, September 8th is the day. And even before this date, in Utah of all places, they are already starting indoctrinating kids with left wing propaganda. As Michelle Malkin mentions a school principal has apologized for showing a video at an assembly that was considered “radical, leftist propaganda.” Michelle Malkin also has a syndicated column about this today. Malkin also has posted an e-mail from a read named “Katie” in Atlanta about how the US Department of Education circumvented elected school officials to send notice of Obama’s indoctrination speech on Sep 8. Many parents of kids in this Pre-K-6th grade targeted propaganda group as you can imagine are outraged, and many are pulling their kids out of school of the day of September 8th. Now blogs such as Vodkapundit are suggesting the same idea. [...]

“Can you imagine the fun that would have occurred if Bush had tried such a thing?”
Well, I remember when his daddy tried just such a thing. Oddly enough, I don’t remember anyone threatening to keep their kids home from school.
~~~~Mr. Bush’s speech, which he delivered at Alice Deal Junior High School here, was carried live by the Cable News Network and stations of the Public Broadcasting Service. The White House hired Wetacom Inc., a production company with the local PBS station, WETA, to send in a crew for the telecast. Mr. Bush perched on a stool by a blackboard and read his speech from Teleprompters that were at the back of the classroom, out of the range of the three cameras.
Secretary Alexander had sent letters to all the nation’s 110,000 elementary and secondary schools beforehand, urging them to let students watch the President’s speech.” ~~~~~
Of course there IS one big difference. Obama’s speech is going to be posted at the White House website. People can watch it whenever theyt want … nobody has to watch it live.
Bush’s show, on the other hand, could only be watched live. And he wanted every schoolkid in the country to tune in at the same time. Ooooh, mind control!
Sep 3, 2009 - 7:55 am 202. Dex Houston TX:Boy did I take a wrong turn onto this site…what a bunch hateful people. To think that you are teaching your child to hate and not respect our president in such a way is criminal.
Sep 3, 2009 - 8:06 am 203. A.W.:Having an opinion is one thing, but to incite and influence hate by any means necessary is wrong. I pray to God that you will sit down with your children and give them enough information to make sound decisions.
Bottom line those that have hate in them simply needed a platform to fuel their pre-existing condition.
Look, i am pretty down on obama, but you know i think this is a great thing. We forget what a thunderclap this has been in the minds of african americans everywhere. As a white kid growing up i can’t tell you how sacred it was for me to hear that teacher say “Lincoln was born in a log cabin, and that means anyone can grow up to be president.” Of course, now they will say “Obama is utterly unqualified to do the job and therefore anyone, literally anyone, can become president.” okay, that was harsh, but a little funny. but more seriously, you can say to black children “anyone can be president” without the obvious retort.
As for the teachers saying “does this make you want to do something?” Well, in context it sounds like nothing more than, “do your homework, be a good citizen” and so on.
All of this sounds like the ultra paranoid cases where the ACLU fears that if children are given a moment of silence they might… omg, pray. and then if a kid doesn’t pray then hey might feel peer pressure and the next thing you know, they will be indoctrinated into faith. if a teacher is that inclined to abuse his or her power, i suspect they don’t need either a moment of silence, or a few silly study sheets from the white house, to do so.
But i will oppose it on simpler grounds: just how much money are we spending on these lesson plans? whatever it is, its too much. i am sure those teachers are individually smart enough to figure out how to create a lesson plan. or, well, if they aren’t, why do you think they will teach these kids anything else?
Is that the level of deep thinking? All you have to do is “debrief” your kids!
I have a better solution. Give each parent a voucher for the actual cost of each child’s education at the hands of government run union school. Say $9K, $10K, or $11K and let the parents choose which school their child will attend.
And yes, the non-motivated parents with the non-motivated kids will be the losers. Because, as we all know, they already are.
Sep 3, 2009 - 2:14 pm 222. Artsgolfer:Re: 68. Dale:
It’s very sad that Conservative parents are planning to pull their kids out of school to avoid hearing the President’ speech. Why?
A: I will tell you why? Because the speech is not innocuous. It is teaching kids that personalities should be followed and obeyed and not the Constitution of the United States of America. He works for us, not for him.
1. It teaches your kids disrespect for the office of the presidency. Not just the Obama presidency, but every presidency.
A: I absolutely disagree. I have always emphasized to my children that we have to respect the choice of the voters but we can disagree vigorously with the policies of any President. NO president should have this kind of access with these kind of questions to high school students much less elementary school students.
2. You’re denying your kids the right to decide whether they want to see the president’s speech.
A: This is the main problem with the left. They are children. They must be taught right from wrong, taught how to discern the truthfullness of an argument, schooled in the history and documents of our great nation. There are levels of decision making. This kind of decision is for adults of voting age…not children…..if you give them a wii or a choc cake you can convince them of anything.
3. You are teaching your kids that they can just choose to walk away from education if they don’t care for, or agree with the subject matter.
A. Another problem with the left. You are arguing from a premise that you assume is correct. This is not education (your premise) it is the soft indoctrination of children. If the president can come across all nice and smiley kids will later be upset when their parents disagree with his policies at home. This is aimed at separating parents from their children.
In other words, you’re teaching your kids to be intellectually lazy.
A: That is just laughable. Most conservatives strive to teach their kids debate, rhetoric, math, sciences and encourage a strive for excellence. Most liberals teach the kids that they don’t abort how to be a professional victim and study PC correct subjects so they can suck at the government teat.
4. You are denying your kids the opportunity to hear some words that might (shocker!) actually inspire them.
A: We can choose who we want to inspire our kids thank you very much. As adults they can make their own choices. I have an idea…why don’t you let your kid come to live with me for a month. We can go to Mass every sunday, read Adam Smith and the Wall Street journal and watch Glen Beck….hey…why deny them…they can make their own choices…right?
5. Childhood is tough enough, and you are making it that much tougher and more awkward by segregating your kid from the rest of his peers because of your own selfish and irrational feelings about the president.
A: Creepy…that sounds like it came right out of the Mao/Lenin/Hitler playbook. And, save unexpected tragedy, most tough childhoods come directly as a result of stupid selfish parental choices.
6. After a childhood of being denied the right to learn new things and think independently, your kid will eventually realize that your need to keep him in a caccoon of right wing ideology was never for his/her own good, but rather for yours, and the life-long resentment and distrust begins.
A: Gosh I feel so guilty now…..NOT! Are you kidding me? My kids are going to grow up informed, intelligtent, knowledgeable (even about all the oppostion’s trite arguments and tactics ) and confident in their Faith and the culture of freedom. They will serve the community by not being a burden and their fellow man through service to Christ on earth.
Sep 3, 2009 - 3:06 pm 226. John McLachlan:While some commenters are concerned that this address to schoolchildren is blatant political propaganda and indoctrination, others are stating that it will probably just be harmless platitudes, about which there should be no concern. I think that the actual address will be mostly platitudes, which no-one, left or right would object to, but it will have established a precedent. After a few such addresses, I think that the political content of mr Obama’s address to schoolshildren will become more partisan. He sat, with William Ayres, for several years. Both sought to turn schools into socialist indoctrination centres. Both Mr Ayres and Mr Obama regard propagandising schoolchildren as the function of education, rather than teaching skills like mathematics, physics, etc. I think that this will not be a solitary address to schoolchildren and that it will appear uncontentious. However, it will be the thin end of the wedge; the camel’s nose inside the tent. Mr Obama is a “community orgniser”. His skill is manipulating people’s emotions, by selection or distorion of facts. At this he excells. Children’s emotions are more easily manipulated. Mr Obama enjoys making speaches.
I am curious now if this has something to do with the extended holiday bestowed upon my children,as we all know Gov. Jindal is one of the few Governors who refused federal stimulus money. HMMMMMMM……..
Sep 3, 2009 - 4:51 pm 233. Aureliano:And, of course, this sentence should have been written with semi-colons rather than periods.
Actually, no.
Independent clauses in a compound sentence CAN be separated with a semi-colon, and semi-colons are often necessary for the sake of clarity, but it is not ungrammatical to use commas to separate the clauses.
Sometimes semi-colons are required; often they are optional, or only just preferred.
Didn’t they teach you that in your ebonics courses?
Sep 3, 2009 - 5:09 pm 234. Nancy:The comments most of you post here scare me. What happened to respecting the office of the president and honoring our democracy. President Obama was elected with a hefty majority of the votes. I find it repulsive that you are making a mockery of the presidency. Many people hated Bush, but I never heard that Bush was denied in a school…in fact he was reading to children when 911 occurred. Shame on you all for denying your children the right to hear from their president, whether you agree with his politics or not! He is the president and he has done many great things in his life including community services that he did at a much lesser cost than he could have done with his Harvard Law Degree. He is a bright man, who the Right is deeming as evil. I personally believe this is all about his half black ethnicity and you not being able to handle a black man making any big policies or God forbid, teach your children who will have to learn to live in a diverse world, whether you like it or not! Grow up! Consider it a great thing for the president to take time from his very busy schedule to address school children and motivate them to learn as much as they can. Shame on you for even proposing that people call in sick and further reduce our economic productivity at a time like this, or suggest that people put their jobs in jeopardy or their children’s attendance record in school in jeopardy for your political nonsense! And it is nonsense. Obama is not sending messages to children or anyone else on socialist policies. This whole thing about Hitler is insanity. We sound like a bunch of nuts to other countries and you are making this into a Rush Limbaugh political rally, which is no way to teach your children respect. First and foremost, you should respect the vote and our democracy and then support your president once elected to succeed. If you disagree, you should vote for your lawmakers and be coherant and educated rather than pray for his demise or failure. What has happened to this country that your racist views have overtaken your sense of decency and patriotism? You only make yourself look like a bunch of crazy, racist fools!
But after seeing the video on Michelle Malkin’s website where a pro-Obama teacher harangues a young student who supported McCain, the “teacher talking points” alarmed me.
The suggested discussions and “student activities” provided by the White House present an irresistable platform for pro-Obama teachers to do some politicking.
This is especially true, given the AFT’s (teachers’ union) days-old press release, in which it argues for a public option in health care reform. Oh, and given the fact Obama addresses Congress on health care reform the day after his nation-wide school speech.
“68. Dale:
It’s very sad that Conservative parents are planning to pull their kids out of school to avoid hearing the President’ speech. Why?
1. It teaches your kids disrespect for the office of the presidency. Not just the Obama presidency, but every presidency.
2. You’re denying your kids the right to decide whether they want to see the president’s speech.
3. You are teaching your kids that they can just choose to walk away from education if they don’t care for, or agree with the subject matter. In other words, you’re teaching your kids to be intellectually lazy.
4. You are denying your kids the opportunity to hear some words that might (shocker!) actually inspire them.
5. Childhood is tough enough, and you are making it that much tougher and more awkward by segregating your kid from the rest of his peers because of your own selfish and irrational feelings about the president.
6. After a childhood of being denied the right to learn new things and think independently, your kid will eventually realize that your need to keep him in a caccoon of right wing ideology was never for his/her own good, but rather for yours, and the life-long resentment and distrust begins.”
